Oil Spill in WVA by Lydia Petree, 4th period

This Monday, a tanker train carrying crude oil derailed and caused massive explosion in West Virginia. At least twenty six cars of the one hundred it had came off of the track. This proved to be a major threat to the environment as local water supplies were contaminated. The Kanawha River was compromised at two water treatment plants shut down.

This can be related to the BP oil spill of 2010. The Gulf of Mexico was infiltrated as the Kanawha River was in this case. As far as the BP spill, the oil slick caused was so large that it could be seen from a NASA satellite. Also, very similar to this is the pollution that occurred during the Industrialization Era in the United States. Humans are not very careful with the environment, and history is repeated.

  1. That's terrible that the water supply was contaminated and that it affected so many surrounding cars.

  2. Even though we need a lot of energy so we rely heavily on fuels such as oil. Of course, there are drawbacks to this energy source as seen in this instance and it can still be harmful when used properly.
