New York City goes 12 days without a homicide -- a modern record Heather McKay

New York went from February 1st to February 13th without a reported homicide.....which is unfortunately a modern record. This makes me pretty optimistic about a possible overall decrease in crime in NYC; however, there is the lingering thought that usually the city would not go a week without a killing. It is so upsetting to think that people are being killed so often, and it really makes me uneasy....even living so far away. (The crime is all around) I think it is great that they were able to create that record, but I really wish that there was just no record to be made.

This can coincide with organized crime and gangsters in the 1920's. At the time of Prohibition, there was a huge increase in crime in order to smuggle, sell, and consume illegal alcohol. There were deaths constantly and organized crime around every corner. While we are not under Prohibition-type laws at this time, gangs still exist to this day, and I am sure they have something to do with the constant homicides in New York. (and everywhere else for that matter)

  1. I think this is sad a city can't be crime free for a while. - Quentin Noble

  2. Well, this is definitely a reality check on how much crime actually goes on in large cities like New York and across America. However, the fact that it's still possible to set a record such as this leaves me pleased.. Hopefully it will continue to occur, and an overall decrease in crime can remain a possibility..

  3. Although it is sad to acknowledge the innumerable crimes that take place in New York, a record like this should give the people hope that it is possible for some individuals to change their evil ways (even if it is for a limited amount of time). I wonder what immediate changes need to be made to ensure that this record is beat.

  4. I think it does show how much crime does occur in the city, but it is also a major city so there will be a higher crime rate compared to rural areas. I think this shows potential of what would e possible for the city in the future.
