"Mega-droughts" by Lydia Petree, Fourth period

A NASA study has proclaimed that if green gas emissions proceed as they have been going, there will be droughts as have never been seen before in the West. There have been severe droughts in recent years, but nothing like the "mega-droughts" that are coming, as scientists predict. Even if emissions improve a bit, it will not be enough to quit the massive disaster that is on the way. If their predictions are correct, droughts could last for forty years.

This is similar to severe conditions such as those that caused the Bering Strait to melt before the beginning of recorded history. Another drought that affected the course of American History was the dust bowl. These mega droughts would be a lot worse, however. There is only so much that modern technology could do to alleviate the effects.

As the severe drought in California continues for a third straight year, water levels in the State's lakes and reservoirs is reaching historic lows.

  1. A forty year drought could have a seriously bad effect on our country.
