Justices Reverse VA Tech Massacre Verdict

After a jury declared the verdict one of death, Virginia's Supreme Court reversed this verdict. The case is about the Virginia Tech Massacre, from 2007. Two of the victims' families stated that they could've survived had the campus earlier notified them of the earlier initial shootings at a dormitory, by student Seung-Hui Cho. On the day of the shooting, the entire campus was warned 2 1/2 hours after the intial shootings, through an email advising students to stay inside. Cho at this point had already killed others and chained the doors to the main hall.
However, the justices agreed with the state on this one: there was no way to anticipate Cho's actions. "Based on the limited information available to the commonwealth at the time prior to the shootings in Norris Hall, it cannot be said that it was known or reasonably foreseeable that students in Norris Hall would fall victim to criminal harm. Thus, as a matter of law, the commonwealth did not have a duty to protect students against third party criminal acts." The court reasoned.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/justices-reverse-wrongful-death-va-tech-verdict-20739501

I have mixed feelings about this. I can understand the court's decisions and I can understand the families' pain. Personally, given the choice, I'd go with the families. I would protest the lack of warning that was originally sent out. Over 30,000 students were there that day, and although it was only one student doing these shootings, they were all in equal danger and therefore deserve equal safety.

"New York City Council votes to raise tobacco purchasing age to 21" Tyra Harris 5th period

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/10/30/us-usa-newyork-smoking-idUSBRE99T1IY20131030
Summary: The New York City Council has voted to raise the legal tobacco buying age from 18 to 21. This will be the highest age rate for buying tobacco in the country. New York City mayor, Michael Bloomberg, an outspoken advocate against smoking & bad health diets signed the bill, which will go into effect as in 180 days. The health department claims this will reduce smoking among teens ages 14-17 by two-thirds in the city.

Analysis: I believe that if you're allowed to vote AND serve in the U.S. armed forces at age 18, you should also be permitted to buy a cigarette at that age. Granted, smoking/chewing tobacco will most likely lead to cancer, among other health issues, it's one's free will to do so. I feel that this law will interfere with citizens individual rights. I don't see how raising the legal buy age to 21 will positively affect 14-17 year-olds, who were illegally smoking when the legal age was lower. The one good thing I can see coming out of this bill is a decrease in toxic gases in the Big Apple. With all of its industrial and manufacturing operations and congested streets, a lowered number of smokers will surely benefit NYC's air.

The New iPad isn't considered a mover or shaker- Umair Nasser

IPad Air breaks no major ground. You use it like you always have with an iPad: around the house, in the office, on the bus, or up at 40,000 feet. Apple continues to dominate the tablet market comprising of a majority of the tablets that exist in the United States. But rivals are closing the gap with clever features that consumers wish Apple would adopt. The thinner and lighter design on this latest iPad is the chief reason to cheer the new model. Basically, your existing iPad can pretty much do everything that the iPad Air can do. Unless you have a spare $500+, it isn't an essential upgrade or trade in this Christmas.

Analysis:
When the iPad was first released, it made the technology world freeze for a minute. Every since then, every major company has attempted to knock dedicated iOS users over to their product. Even with a plethora of effort in taking consumers away from the typical Apple product, the California-based company continues to thrive and dominate the target audience of these devices. No matter what Apple does, people will still buy their products over the "other guys." Labeled the 'easiest operating system' in the world of tablets, iPads will remain number 01, and there are bound to be people who will upgrade regardless of the necessity or not.

iPhone 6 Rumored for September 2014 - Angel Pineda 1st Pd.

Not long after the release of the 5S and 5C, Apple is already hard at work developing the rumored successor, the iPhone 6. Rumors have hit the web suggesting the new phone will release in September 2014. The other rumor as well is that the 6 will run 1080p Retina display that will measure 5 inches diagonally. Still no word on what the upgrades to the software will be.

ANALYSIS: I personally am excited for this. I'm very interested to see what Apple will do next regarding technology. At this point, it's unpredictable.

Protesters For a Boy killed by Calif. deputy Montana Dalton 2nd

There were hundreds of protesters that marched Tuesday to protest the unforgetting fatal shooting of a 13-year-old boy. Even worse by a Northern California sheriff's deputy. Results of these actions consist of an FBI Investigation.

The protesters consisted of not only adults but middle- and high-school-age students and members of the Occupy Oakland movement. They marched through the streets with signs and hooded sweatshirts bearing photos of the boy.

Apparently this deputy mistook a pellet gun carried by Andy Lopez ( the boy that was shot ) for an assault rifle.

REFLECTION

Even though it was NOT AT ALL Lopez's fault, this shows how realistic toys and games have became as industries advance.  Its upsetting to think a cop would've even mistaken a toy for a rifle!

"Florida death row inmates challenge execution drug," - Emily Gray

Seven death row inmates in Florida sued the state, stating that the be three-step lethal injection process violated the constitution on cruel and unusual punishment. The three-step process includes pentobarbital and midazolam. Midazolam is said to be extremely painful however, Mitsy Cash, a Florida Department of Corrections said that one of test inmates experienced no pain at all. Four of the seven inmates have hearing scheduled in Jacksonville federal court on November 6.

Analysis: This article was written by David Adams and Kevin Gray. It was written on October 28, 2013. I think that this article was written to the general public of America. The main idea of this article was to show how the constitution might have been violated. I think that if it has been violated the people who have already been using it should be punished with the same crime but if it has no pain at all I think that they should use it. I think that maybe the prisoners wanted some more time before they leave and maybe they are just making a big fuss . Either way the constitution should not be violated no matter what.

3 Dead After Maryland Murder-Suicide -Heather Harris 1st

Early Sunday morning, after a reporter shooting at 1:35am, 3 people were found dead inside a home in Glen Burnie, Maryland. Among the 3 found dead, Baltimore firefighter Andrew Scott Hoffman, 27, and Marie Leanne Edith Hartman, were found killed. Along with 37-year old Christopher Lee Robinson, a Baltimore police officer was one of the people found dead at the scene and is suspected to be the shooter. Investigation by police indicates that Robinson had a relationship with the female victim. Even though the shooters motives aren't clear yet, the shooting is described as a domestic incident. Maryland police spokesman described this as a tragic incident and it truly is. There is so much tragedy and heartache going on in the world in this day in age. From the government shut down to ridiculous incidents and killings like this, I have no idea how we as a nation continue to not pull together as one. Instead we are going against each other and it will end up destroying this beautiful and free world that was created to be a new beginning for some.

Jay-Z has the power to bring change

Summary: Roxanne Jones writes an article about how she believes that rapper. Jay-Z has the power to help stop racial profiling in retail businesses. With his upcoming business deal with Barneys clothing store, Jones believes that if Jay -Z spoke out about racial profiling specifically within the Barneys company that he could have a major affect on this issue. This need for change was brought along by Barney's recent legal battles with costumers who were wrongly detained and harassed by police after  making expensive purchases at the retail store because of their race.

Analysis: I think its important that celebrities use their popularity to bring about social change. Racial profiling, though insensitive and barbaric, is still a big factor in not only the African American community but in within other minorities as well. I think that if it is possible for Jay-Z to bring a positive change then he should take the opportunity.

Racial Profiling Reports in NYC - Jasmine Easter

Recently, African American New Yorkers have began to speak up about being racially profiled. Most of these incidents have happened outside of Macey's and Barney's NYC. Police have stopped individuals and checked their bags, accused them of credit card fraud, and made other accusations. One of the men stopped was an actor of an HBO show. When asked about the incidents the stores and the Police department both had no comment.

Racial Profiling has always been an issue in this country. I find it sad that it's something we can't seem to escape. No matter what race you are, you have either been a victim or guilty of this. It doesn't make you a bad person it's just all we've known. It's a leaned behavior. That being said, I think it's time we break tradition or spreading racial profiling. People like to call our generation the blind generation because we don't tend to judge each other by race, gender, or religion. I think if we teach future generations to look at people the way we do the our nasty habit of racial profiling will finally disappear.

Felicia Padilla 5th period: Consumer Reports' car reliability survey shows Japanese brands dominating, Europeans gaining ground

Summary: In the auto industry, Japanese brands have continuously dominated in car reliability. The three brands that are expected to show the most reliability in the coming year are Lexus, Toyota, and Acura. Even though this is true, it does not ensure the driver that buying a Japanese car will give them the least amount of problems. In fact, many Japanese brands such as: Nissan, Scion, and Subaru have gone down several positions from their last rankings. Now, not everything is about the Japanese. The Audi, an European made car has moved up to position number 4 in the rankings, moving up four places since last year. The only domestic brand that made the top 10 cut was led by General Motors' GMC.

Top 10 List:
1. Lexus
2. Toyota
3. Acura
4. Audi
5. Mazda
6. Infiniti
7. Volvo
8. Honda
9. GMC
10. Subaru
Analysis: Based solely on this list, to an outsider with very minimal education it would seem as though the United States may not have the most successful industry. Even though the auto industry in the US is tremendously big, we aren't putting out good quality cars, which may cost us big bucks at the end of the road. Despite all of this, it is very interesting that I recognized every single one of the brands listed in the top 10, even though only one is actually made in the US.

Francesca Bartos 10/28/2013 2nd

The article "Painting a Room With Blues, or Hip-Hop or Mozart" is about a new app that makes suggestions on how to paint a room based on a certain song. The app will listen to a song, much like Shazam does, or use a song from the user's library and "translate" it into colors. The article says the app is marketed towards "millennials" (a term that that refers to people who are currently in their teens to late twenties) The app is a joint effort between companies Sherwin Williams paint and Dutch Boy apps. The idea is to connect something "millennials" to paint through music, because -the article says this anyway- millennials like music.
Also this generation is next up to be home owners.
I am not sure this would work all that well. It is a cool idea but I have two things that would stop me from using this app. For one my music taste changes a lot so painting a room based on a song that I like right now would not be ideal because I may not like that song three months from now, but the room would still be painted like that. Secondly my brain naturally associates songs with colors anyway so at least for me it isnt really necessary.

Missing Student Signs Removed- Alexa Almaguer 4th Period

Summary:
In June of 2011, Lauren Spierer went missing after a night out with friends. Lauren was a sophomore at Indiana University in Bloomington. This past spring, Bloomington firefighters put up 20 billboard style signs throughout the city in an effort to move forward with the case. This past month the city had all of the signs removed in order to, "balance community interests." Charlene Spierer was never notified of her daughter's signs' removal, and says she was saddened by this sudden movement. Charlene says that she had hoped somebody would see the missing sign and call the police with a piece of evidence that could help close the case.

Analysis:
Written by Shawn Cohen, this article discusses the recent removal of signs in Bloomington, Indiana that informed citizens of a missing 20 year old known as Lauren Spierer. Lauren went missing two years ago and police still have no leads to where the sophomore at Indiana University could be. The town wanted to move forward with community interests and advertise more recent events on billboards throughout the city. Despite Lauren's signs' being taken down, the police are still searching for her and the city still supports Spierer's family during this time.

'Has U.S. stopped all spying on allies? Top official says no' - Devin Lewis 2nd Period

Has U.S. stopped all spying on allies? Top official says no

The article titled "Has U.S. stopped all spying on allies? Top official says no" was written by Oliver Knox from Yahoo! News explores the recent development of United States spying on foreign leaders. Leaders in Germany, France, Mexico, Spain, Brazil, and other allied countries have been spied on and are now voicing their complainants. Confusing both national and international audiences, people are wondering why would a country spy on an ally during a time of peace. By putting relations at risk, especially with powerhouses like Germany and France, the United States government and NSA are under fire. In recent developments only some spying has been cut but not across the board.
I do agree with Senate Intelligence Committee chair Dianne Feinstein that, "Unless the United States is engaged in hostilities against a country or there is an emergency need for this type of surveillance, I do not believe the United States should be collecting phone calls or emails of friendly presidents and prime ministers." Trying to uncover secrets from fellow countries is hurting more than helping the cause towards better....That's another problem with this spying. The government and NSA have failed to give an explanation on why they are spying on leaders. Even if they do explain it, they can't repair the damage or relationships.

Woman carries wounded pit bull down mountain(Rhyann lee)

Summary:
A photo taken by Andi Davis, the hiker who found him, shows the dog half standing, half collapsed, his head pressing against a rock.

Davis had walked about a half mile uphill last Friday, October 18, along a deserted trail in Phoenix when she found the black and white dog, suffering from bullet wounds, said Arizona Humane Society spokeswoman Bretta Nelson in an e-mail.

She hesitated for a moment before approaching the pit bull, Nelson said. But when he lifted his head as she reached for her water bottle, Davis put her apprehension aside, gave him a drink and then lifted the 47-pound dog into her arms, Nelson said. Then, she began walking.

"It will be OK," Davis kept telling the dog as she slowly picked her way down the path. Every so often she would stop, give him another drink, then stand up again and keep going. "At first she was shaking because she was scared," Nelson said. "Then she was shaking because of the weight of him." Eventually the dog stopped moving.Described as a "very fit person," it took Davis an hour to complete the journey, her arms aching, Nelson said. Davis's husband and daughter met her at the bottom and they took the dog to the Arizona Humane Society, where veterinarians examined him.

"I thought I would never see him again," Jessi said. "I knew he was in good hands, but I still felt very sad."

Doctors found an open abdominal wound, bullet fragments near his spinal cord and a bullet in the middle of his neck, Nelson said. The Davis family named him Elijah.

Analysis : I think it is so sweet for Davis to save this dog! Since I am a dog lover this touches my heart and makes me so mad that someone would leave a helpless dog to die !http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/24/us/arizona-woman-rescues-dog/index.html?c=us

Texas Abortion Laws Unconstitutional - Morgan Brown 5th

Abortion has always been an issue or controversy amongst Americans. If abortion is legal or not is up to the state to determine. In the state of Texas, abortion has been made legal because the new laws against it were considered to be unconstitutional. The ruling of the laws being unconstitutional occurred a day before they were scheduled to take place. It was ruled unconstitutional because apparently the abortion laws violates the rights of women and puts unreasonable demands on doctors that perform abortions. The law was taken down by U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel.

Personally I'm neutral on if abortion should be legal or not. I feel as if abortion should only be use as a last option in emergencies if any at all. It shouldn't be used just because someone wasn't responsible and doesn't want people to find out. Plus abortion really just depends on the person and their beliefs. Its a women's body so it is that women's choice. Abortion being allowed in Texas, I believe can be beneficial if used correctly and not taken advantage of.

Kolina Hocevar period 5 terrorist attack

Terrorism is always and increasingly becoming a tactic of warfare. The number of attacks hit its highest in 2012. More than 8,500 terrorist attacks have killed nearly about 15,500 people last year throughout Africa and the Middle East. There is a 69% rise in attacks and an 89% jump in fatalities from 2011, sail START, one of the world's leading terrorism trackers. Six out of the seven most deadly groups are associated with al Qaeda, according to START, and most of the violence was committed in Muslim majority countries. In the past the record attacks was set in 2011 with more than 5,000 incidents, for fatalities the previous high was 2007 with more than 12,8000 deaths. In September, Sunni and Shiite leaders meeting in Washington announced an agreement to set aside differences and address the "dire situation of unrest, destruction, genocide and refuges' in many predominately Muslim countries.

Peaceful engagement is the only way forward. There will never be enough drone strikes or NSA hacks to kill everyone that mistrusts and hates NSA hacks. The USA is creating more enemies than it can ever kill.

Almost Depression by: Steffani Lopez 5th period

http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/25/health/almost-depressed-carson/index.html?hpt=he_c2

The article I chose addresses the possibility of being 'almost depressed'. These people make up about 12 million in our nation, a scary amount considering the often fatal symptoms of clinical depression. Shelley Carson asks questions about symptoms the reader may be experiencing. She continues to assure the reader that even if they have the following symptoms, they don't have a serious mental illness. The purpose of this article is to remind people who are losing interest in things they used to find fun or losing their appetite that they aren't the only ones.

I think this short dissertation on almost depression is necessary, especially to overly stressed high school students and basically everyone over the age of 12. Knowing that almost depression is a thing really helps me to understand why being sad too much is a thing.

7 year old survives hit-and-run

Summary:
Seven year old Lorenzo Cantu survived after being run over by a truck this last Saturday in Dallas. His grandfather's surveillance system captured a recording of the boy running out from behind a parked car on the side of the street, then suddenly getting hit by a white pick up truck pulling a flatbed trailer. The driver never stopped and left Lorenzo lying helplessly in the street. Luckily, after being in the hospital for 24 hours, the boy only had to recover from a concussion and badly scratched and bruised feet. His mother, Victoria Cantu, is very thankful that her son is alive, but is worried if the person who ran him over will soon be found and punished.

Analysis:
Especially after watching the video myself, I find it amazing that after getting hit by a car this seven year old survived, and he only had a concussion and bruised feet! I can't imagine being the person behind that truck's wheel and knowing that you have just possibly killed a child, yet they didn't even stop. The driver could possibly been someone not legal to the U.S., not wanting to get involved with the police/law for other reasons other than just this one.

Peyton Wilson 5th period Woman+Dog

No one knows exactly how long the 2-year-old pit bull had been left to die alone in the Arizona mountains.
"Then she was shaking because of the weight of him." Eventually the dog stopped moving.

First I would like to commend Andi Davis for actually doing what many people who would say "Oh of course anyone who saw an injured dog left out to die in the desert would pick it up and carry it to safety," then when they are put in that situation, 90% just walk past and hope for the next person to do it. That took a leap of faith and some darn good humanity. Second, I hope that they can find whoever did that to the dog. That is an inexcusable and disgusting thing to do even if it is "just a dog." There are always better options. Take him to the pound or a friend that you know will take good care of him. What kind of person shoots a dog, physically abuses it, and then leaves it out in the Arizona wilderness? You just can't make this stuff up. A woman on a walk finds a terribly injured dog and carries it for an hour in her arms to a veterinarian.

"Judge In Texas Partly Rejects Abortion Law" (Melissa Kurtzman, 5th Period)

Summary: A district court in Austin ruled on Monday that certain parts of Texas' new abortion laws were unconstitutional. The laws were supposed to go into effect tomorrow. The ruling blocked a big part of the laws that would've required abortion doctors to have admitting rights to a hospital in order to perform the procedure; however, the court did uphold the part of the law that states that a certain drug protocol has to be used in medical-induced abortions, a practice that some doctors have called "outdated". The legislation was signed by Governor Rick Perry in July. Democratic state senator Wendy Davis tried to prevent the laws from being voted on by staging an 11 hour filibuster but the laws ultimately passed in the Republican controlled legislature; Davis is now running for governor of Texas.

Analysis: I think it's good that part of this law was ruled unconstitutional. Having all of these bans, in my opinion, partially goes against womens' rights which bothers me. I hope that everything works our with this legislation.

Erinn Green-McDonalds to stop serving Heinz ketchup

McDonald's has lost its taste for Heinz ketchup. The fast-food giant says it is cutting ties with the condiment company after 40 years because of management changes there.
A former Burger King CEO became head of Heinz in June after the company was bought by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway and Capital. 3G also controls Burger King.
The impact of the change might be tasted more overseas. In the U.S., McDonald's uses Heinz products only in Pittsburgh and Minneapolis restaurants.
"As a result of recent management changes at Heinz, we have decided to transition our business to other suppliers over time," McDonald's Corp. said in a statement on Friday

It's amazing that after 40 years McDonald's has cut off their connections with the well known ketchup vender. Everyone who goes to McDonald's is so use to the tastes of Heniz ketchup. Its weird that the new management is the reasoning that the condiment. McDonald's is a very well known fast food joint so they makes tons of money and everyone that's a vender for them makes a certain percentage .It's a very sad case.

Nudes Sent to Entire Classroom

http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/us/2013/10/25/iowa-university-nude-pics-sent-to-class.kcci.html?c=us

So basically what happened was a teaching assistant at the University of Iowa, meant to attach a file that had the answers to two math problems, unfortunately it had the skimpy nudes of she and another man. By accidentally sending those elicit emails, the entire campus saw the pictures, and the woman was let go of her position.

Response: This seems like something that couldn't happen in real life. It seems like the plot so some cheesy Hollywood movie, but in all reality I do empathize for this woman. She didn't mean to send anything harmful, unfortunately she lacked the common sense to check twice.
We live in a very busy world that's run by technology. So even though it's not uncommon for these things to happen, it's  all a matter of who's on the receiving end. Our society is very "go go go" and very seldom do people ever take a moment to  take a second  at whatever's happening. However, this second look caused a woman to lose almost any chance of teaching she's ever had.

3 species discovered in Australian rainforest

In an area referred to as the "lost world", the northern tip of Queensland, Australia, three previously undocumented species were discovered. These newly discovered species include three vertebrates which makes this discovery even more remarkable. These include a frog, leaf-tail gecko, and a golden skink. These have been living in isolation from much of the world for perhaps millions of years in a remote mountain range. Scientists have previously explored this area, however, they have not gone to the lengths this group did. This group, comprised of a National Geographic photographer and a couple other researchers, explored the plateau atop the mountains. it was shocking to the scientific comunity to find new species in an area that they thought had been searched. At this point, it would be shocking to find new species anywhere! These were not the only animals discovered, many other species were discovered but the vertebrates were the most significant. It is expected that other expeditions will happen here to perhaps discover even more about the world we thought we knew.

This article was surprising to me. it's hard to believe there are still things on our own planet that have yet to be discovered. As a culture, many of us believe everything has been discovered. Where else is there to look? It is also interesting that while many scientists are searching other planets and galaxies for new discoveries there are still some to be made in our own backyard.

senator Dianne Feinstein prior to this video had voiced her concerns regarding metadata and its use by the government. she had been concerned that the data was being used to wrongfully spy on officials.
in this video, Feinstein appears to be clearing up and elaborating on what exactly metadata is and what its purpose is in terrorist activity and in the government. while use of this data will not be commenced, it will be monitored even closer than before- ensuring the absolute necessity of an accepted request to survey the data.

I believe this mass of data could prove useful if the situation arose for it to be of service to government intellegence agencies.
if precautions to maluse are carried out as promised, there should be no problem  with the continued utilization of this government tool.

Report: Obama administration knew millions wouldn't be able to keep insurance- Sarah Klein, 4th period

Before the Affordable Care Act became law, President Obama promised Americans they could keep their current healthcare plans if they wanted to do so. But already hundreds of thousands of citizens are being notified that their plans are being cancelled because they do not comply with the new law. There is new evidence that the Obama administration has known for at least three years the cancellations were coming.
This after, while campaigning for his otherwise massive healthcare overhaul, President Obama went out of his way to make one thing clear and simple: if you like your current health care plan, you would be able to stick with it under his reform.
It really makes me sick to think that Obama knew all along that Americans would lose their health insurance at the expense of this great scheme to provide health insurance universally. Clearly, this plan is flawed.

Snakes On The Brain (plane?) Meg Mickelsen

New research suggests that the high quality vision of most primates had been driven by the constant threat of snakes.  Snakes large enough to eat primates evolved at the same time as primates and venomous snakes about 40 million years after.  Snakes continuously shared their environment with primates and have always been a threat. macaque monkeys raised in an environment without snakes, show a great amount of fear when presented with one.  When researching these monkeys, special neural circuits to detect snakes where discovered.  This suggests that the threat of snakes has forced the evolution of primate's close range vision.  Primates have a larger neural response to the image of snakes than to a face. Read the whole article here http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/10/131028162928.htm

I find this article fascinating primarily because of the snake mythology present in most cultures.  Whether within Grecian religion or in Judeo-Christian religion, one is sure to discover heaps of mythology that relates to the evilness of snakes. With this new information on the subject, I find the recurring theme of devilish snakes makes even more sense.   It is fascinating to consider the vital trait of exceptional vision to be an evolutionary response to such a deeply hated creature.

KATEY GUINN 5TH PERIOD "Abortion Bill in Austin"

An abortion bill in Austin was blocked off due to being unconstitutional. in my opinion, abortions should never be an option! Yes, I understand if you get pregnant and you do not want to have a baby you would want an abortion, but t is your own fault, not the baby's. Now people are taking abortion pills, like what is that? Doctors can now give you medicine to have an abortion without strict rules and without an operation. I don't get the way some people think. They say an abortion isn't doing any harm but indeed it is! If something is GROWING inside of you, IT IS LIVING. Just have the baby and then give it up for adoption if you don't want it. Why have your child die for something you did, whether the baby has been born or not? Be smart about your choices.

Work Out While Sitting - Zien Lin (P4)

Summary: A meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine showed that from studies, people are generally 30% less active on days that they exercise compared to days when they don't. It also showed that the average American spends about 64 hours a week on their butt, so companies have made chairs that are supposed to keep the sitters "fit." These chairs can range from costing $295 to over $800.

Analysis: I doubt the people who have to spend that much time sitting down in an office are willing to shell out nearly a grand for a chair so they can be uncomfortable while they sit for 64 hours a week. This is for lazy people with money wanting to find an excuse to not really exercise.

Gloria Jones: 2 of 4 Oklahoma Escapees Captured

Today 2 out of 4 escapees from an Oklahoma jail were found and taken back to present. Three of them were in prison for charges of meth. The other one was in prison for a federal fun charge.
They escaped through a hatch above the shower head. These hatches led to a door outside of the jail's "land".

This, in a way, reminds me of the Alcatraz escape. It is not quite as nifty or clever. However, it did use wit rather than violence (which I suppose is a good thing). It is good that the authorities are so on top of finding criminals.

Carsin Ablon, 1st Period APUSH - Fed Judge: Texas Abortion Limits Unconstitutional

Today, Lee Yeakel, a federal judge, ruled several abortion clinic related laws that would limit the number of clinics in Texas thus making receiving an abortion much more difficult, unconstitutional. The judge declared that the laws would place an "unconstitutional burden" on any women who chooses to receive an abortion. This ruling has stirred controversy for many residents of Texas such as Texas Attorney General Greg Abbot who argues that the unconstitutional laws would protect women and most importantly, the fetus, causing Abbot to file an appeal almost expediently. Although several other conservative states managed to pass laws limiting the amounts of clinics in their state, the fact that Texas's broad landmass would create vast distances between the limited clinics keeps the trial over the laws growing causing Abbot to say he has " no doubt that this case is going all the way to the United States Supreme Court". As conservatives continue to argue their case, Lee Yeakel made a concrete statement stating that the unconstitutional laws "do not bear a rational relationship to the legitimate right of the state in preserving and promoting fetal life or a woman's health and, in any event, places a substantial obstacle in the path of a woman seeking an abortion" thus creating a strong, impermeable counterargument favoring The Democratic argument. Meanwhile, other pharmaceutical related arguments related to contraceptive pills raise as conservatives fight to make pills such as birth control and the morning after pill more difficult to obtain.

Personally, I am discomforted that anybody, Democratic or Republican, Liberal or Conservative, would feel like they have the authority to stop any women from having the option to receive a safe medical procedure if desired. I believe that absolutely nobody should have the power to speak for an entire gender regardless of status. One of my favorite George Carlin quotes, “How come when it’s us, it’s an abortion, and when it’s a chicken, it’s an omelette?” shows the comedic inhumanity behind many people's thoughts regarding abortion through a comedic analogy. However, if you disregard the humor, a very valid point is created, that the abortion of any human is equal to that of an chicken, yet humans eat eggs, veal, lamb, etc on a regular basis. I do not bring up this quotation as a plea for vegetarianism  but because it shows that the killing of infants or fetuses has existed in the human lifestyle for even less humane reasons of culinary pleasure. I find it to be un-American to limit the choice of any citizen as they should hold the power to make their own decisions and deal with any consequence if any surface.

"Crystal McVea Claims She Spoke With God in Near-Death Episode" - Natalie H. - Class 2

This article was created by ABC News and featured on Yahoo! News, a family friendly news show as far as I know. This article was produced 5 hours ago today (10/28/13), and tells the event of Crystal McVea talking to God when her heart stopped for almost 10 minutes because of an overdose of pain medicine back in 2009. Now she has been recognized for her book Waking Up In Heaven, her story of going from superstitious to a full believer in God.

Now in this world are religious people, passive religious people, and non-religious people. There are believers and superstitious people. Anyone who comes across something with the mention of religion will have their own take on it. But everyone can relate to a time where they felt hopeful, encouraged, or enlightened. And I saw that in this article.

The article was written for the general public to see, but I suspect that most people with a religious affiliation will be able to relate to this woman’s story a little more than others. But this article was meant to bring hope for the people and tell of the wonderful, miraculous things that can happen to a person.

I found this important because it goes to show how one’s life can change dramatically in a single event. Though the belief in a God is falling in our modern world, the overall populations of the world mostly follow a monotheistic religion, with Christianity and Islam at the higher percentiles. And maybe all it takes is one person to make a difference in someone else.

Largest Airport? Valerie Coahuilas

This sunday of October 27th the gulf emirate of Dubai opened its second airport to the people, Al-Maktoum International, said to be the world's largest once it is officially finished. A Wizz Air plane from Budapest was the first aircraft to land at the new facility, and was welcomed on the tarmac with a water cannon salute. Another low-cost carrier, Jazeera Airways, will follow and make a landing on this upcoming Thursday with daily flights to and from Kuwait, while Bahrain's national carrier, Gulf Air, will begin operations on December 8. No other airlines have announced intentions to use the new airport, which lies about 30 miles south of Dubai International, one of the world's busiest hubs for air passengers.Chief executive officer of Dubai Airports,Paul Griffiths, was confident that other companies would follow "in the coming months". The new airport is not aimed at replacing Dubai International, where expansion work is continuing, at least not for the time being, according to Chief executives.

"Opinion: Confederate flag was the flag of traitors," Carson Wright, 5th Period

Political comedian Dean Obeidallah contends that while the Confederate flag's role as a symbol of racism is debatable, it is irrefutable that it is a symbol of the Confederacy's betrayal of the Union. Obeidallah argues that such is so based on the fact that the seceding states of the Civil War Era broke away to form a new nation, elect a new president and congress, issue their own currency, and fight against the remaining northern fragment of the Union with their own army. Furthermore, the "Confederate flag" wasn't actually the flag of the confederacy; it was the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. In modern/pop culture, it can be seen at tea party rallies, for sale on Kanye West's new tour, and two high school students brought a Confederate flag to school after another student brought a gay pride flag to school. Based on speeches made by Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy, this breakaway nation view the United States as a sworn enemy, as he repeatedly addressed them accordingly. In 1861, Jefferson Davis stated that it is a "great truth that the negro is not equal to white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and moral condition." Obeidallah concludes his article by contending that the Confederate has but one place in which it should be displayed: the history museums.

I would not even agree with Obeidallah's first point, that one could "debate whether the Confederate flag is a symbol of racism." It is and always has been a symbol of racism; the quote from Jefferson Davis included in the article and in the above summary should be proof enough of that. This flag is emblematic of racism in the same way that the SS Sig runes are emblematic of Nazism (which is an ideology often paired with the ideology of the heirs of the Confederacy). In all other respects, though, Obeidallah is spot on. This is a flag that represents betrayal, hatred, turmoil, war. It is nothing good, and nothing good can come of it.

In the article, Obeidallah states that he "saw it fly at a recent tea party rally in Washington." If anything worries me, it is that; that there is a mainstream, current political party that holds such a flag as an acceptable symbol. Hopefully, the commonwealth contains enough sensible individuals so as to sway today's America from even entertaining such ideologies.

McKenzie Hartmann- Abortion Law Restricted -4 th Period

This article details the recent decision by a federal judge that essentially bans sections the new abortion law in certain parts of Texas.  Particularly those sections pertaining to the distribution of necessary medication and the restrictions placed on physicians.  The lawsuit, filed by planned parenthood on behalf of women, claiming that their constitutional rights have been violated.  The judge decidedly agreed saying all the requirements place lofty, unreasonable obstacles in the way of women seeking abortions.  However, certain aspects of the law, such as follow up visits, will be kept.  Proponents of abortion feel the judge didn't push the boundaries of the law far enough, but none the less see the situation as win.  One source said that today marked a victory for the women of Texas.  Though it is important to remember this only effects certain areas of the state, meaning not all Texas women will receive the benefits of the ruling.  Meanwhile, conservative parties view the outcome as a disappointment.  Governor Rick Perry claims they will continue to fight against the evils of abortion, saying, "Today's decision will not stop our ongoing efforts to protect life and ensure the women of our state aren't exposed to any more of the abortion-mill horror stories that have made headlines recently."

While I understand both sides of this argument and see validity, I can't understand how we can still live in a society where women are treated like second class citizens.  Perry directly proves this, by trying to protect women from 'exposure.'  What are we?  Children?  Vulnerable and dependent who must rely on others for protection from 'exposure' to the evils of the world?  The fact of the matter remains abortions are going to happen and they should be a woman's choice.  Politicians can't make it impossible for women to seek an abortion, it's unconstitutional.  While I agree there should be some restrictions that hinder the careless destruction of life, the restrictions can't hinder a woman's ability completely.  If the situation demands an abortion for the health of the mother, that's when women really need this so called protection.  When men are forced to be fathers abortion can be outlawed, but until that day comes there should be equality in the right not to be a parent.  I'm not saying abortion is good, I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying it should be the mother's choice.

ROWAN BARCHAM

While hiking up the Arizona mountains last friday, October 18, Andi Davis stumbled upon a 2-year-old black and white pit bull, barely alive, left for dead. The dog had been suffering from numerous bullet wounds and could hardly stand up. Davis was skeptical to approach the pit bull, but soon reverted to trying to help the little dog as he reached for a drink from her water bottle. The dog was barely 50 pounds, and was estimated to have been stranded in the mountains for quite some time. After a little nurturing, Davis managed to get the dog onto its feet, slowly guiding him down the hill, stopping only to give the dog another drink.

Davis' family met her at the bottom of the hill and drove the wounded animal to the Arizona Humane Society. After close examination from the veterinarians, the dog was found to have an open abdominal wound, a bullet in the middle of his neck, and bullets near his spinal cord. Fortunately, the little dog was brought back to health and given a name by his new family: Elijah.

The Davis family now has four dogs after the addition of Elijah, but authorities are still on the lookout for leads to the person who may have abandoned and abused the small dog.

Leslie Kelly: Man who ranted about zombies shot and killed by California homeowner

This is a really weird story. Apparently, this young guy, 22-year-old Paul Michael Bracamontes, got a bit caught up in all the zombie apocalypse buzz. He started screaming in a stranger's backyard, making threats to the family inside and claiming that more were coming to do them harm, people that authorities are certain do not exist. Prior to this, Bracamontes had attended a party where he ranted to his relatives about the zombies. Woah there. The homeowner, in fear of his life and his family's safety, killed Bracamontes and is not being charged on the grounds of self defense. I feel really bad for everyone involved. I mean, sure you read the title to this article and it seems almost laughable but when you really think about it, this man was probably really sick. And so young. And his killer, presumably just a normal civilian who was scared for his family, has to live with what he did for the rest of his life. Read the article here.

Ohio Killer sentenced to death with a new injection

Ohio plans to use a combined use of two drugs never tried before in the U.S.  to put a child killer to rest. Ronald Phillips killed and raped his girlfriend's three year old daughter. The state plans to use a combination of Midazolam, a sedative, and hydromorphone. Included in the untested backup execution method, Ohio State will be the first prison to put a prisoner to death.

The death penalty to me has always struck as a unreasonable method, but in this case this man did rape and kill a three year old so the cause seems to be justified. I think testing out new things always is a good thing. Who knows, this new injection may be completely painless and efficient, this can't possibly be a bad thing. The man is going to die either way.

Gunmen Robbery in Libya

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-24721776

Anti-Gaddafi fighters celebrate the fall of Sirte in the town on 20 October, 2011. Libyan rebel fighters seated in tank with guns raised in air

This article was posted today at 6:03 pm.  Libya's state news agency says that the van was headed towards Libya's Central Bank with foreign and local currency. As soon as it entered Sirte from the airport, it was stopped by ten angry Sirte men, who took 53m Libyan dinars as well as $12m in US dollars and Euros. Only one security vehicle had been assigned to guard the van and the guards were "unable to resist the 10 attackers," according to the Lana news agency. Since the 2011 Civil War, Libya has suffered continuing lawlessness. " The robbery is a catastrophe for the whole of Libya," said Abdel-Fattah Mohammed, head of Sirte council. This is not the first time something like this has happened. In July, two banks were robbed by Sirte attackers, who stole 500,000 dinars ($606,605). Libya is "lawless" because the Prime Minister, Ali Zeidon was kidnapped, it highlighted the power of the militias plan to overthrow Gadaffi in 2011, which still prevent the government  from exercising a lot of power. It is now two years after Gadaffi being overthrown, and the elected government still does not hold a lot of power. The militia is stronger than the army units, and is often more armed than the police, which is why it was easy for them to overpower the minister's bodyguards. Libya's government is not in control of the country at all.

For those who do not know where Libya is, here's a map:

I think what's going on in Libya is awful. Their government is out of control. I posted this to remind my classmates that although our government has just "recovered" from a shut down, other countries have it way worse. Their Prime Minister was kidnapped! This also taught me about a Civil War I didn't even know existed and I actually want to look into it a little more. I encourage you guys to start posting current events from other countries. It teaches you a lot about what's going on in other parts of the world. Sometimes we forget that America is not the only country that has news.
