Philly teen who died in truck crash hailed a hero for saving lives of passengers Ilana Lemack 4th period

A 17-year-old Philadelphia teen died in a truck crash and is being called a hero for trying to steer the vehicle to safety after his stepfather blacked out while he was driving.  Christopher Alvelo, his stepfather, and three 15 year old passengers were on their way home after a Eagle Scouts community service project. His stepfather had a medical emergency and lost control of the vehicle. Alvelo was sitting in the passenger side of the pickup truck, reached over to grab the wheel and was able to steer the vehicle off the road and into the parking lot. However, the boy could not reach the brakes in time causing the truck to slam into the rear of a parked bus, killing him instantly. All of the other passengers in the car survived, but with major injuries. Alvelo's aunt told reporters that if Alvelo had not moved the truck properly, it would have hit a tank full of heating oil.

I think that this boy is a real hero. He sacrificed his life to save the other passengers in the car. He could have easily stayed in the passenger seat and let the bus kill his step father, then maybe he would still be alive. However, Alvelo was not thinking about himself but about the people around him. I don't think many people would have done the same thing Christopher did. Some people might have been too scared and others might have just been too selfish. We'll never know the real reason Christopher Alvelo did what he did, but I am sure the 4 survivors are very grateful for his heroic actions.
