Lost weekend: How Trump’s time at his golf club hurt the response to Maria -David Bagley

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/lost-weekend-how-trumps-time-at-his-golf-club-hurt-the-response-to-maria/2017/09/29/ce92ed0a-a522-11e7-8c37-e1d99ad6aa22_story.html?hpid=hp_hp-top-table-main_trumpmaria-835pm%3Ahomepage%2Fstory&utm_term=.f2ed34af9813

Hurricane Maria, a category 4 storm, recently ravaged the island of Puerto Rico, leaving the island without power, little fresh water, and minimal communications. It appeared that Trump knew what he was doing but that quickly changed as he became increasing silent on the situation and Puerto Ricans struggled more and more. To add insult to injury, Trump and many other administration members went to his Golf Resort rather than address the people, as well as spreading lies saying everything was "going fine".

Although I cannot relate to the struggling of being without food and fresh water, I, from my petty teenage ways, can understand the thought of being neglected in a time of need. I had already knew that Puerto Rico had been heavily devastated by Maria, but I was unaware that our President, who had promised supplies and aid previously, was neglecting a country that needed our aid so badly. I can compare this to the cruel treatment of the Native Americans, and how after how they helped the first settlers, they were not accepted, or were not aided when they had English-brought diseases, eventually leading to their eradication

Abortion laws By:Thalia Wallace

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/28/us/illinois-bruce-rauner-abortion.html (SUMMARY):
In Chicago , the republican Governor (Bruce Rauner) won praise on Thursday from some unlikely corners. The American Civil Liberties Union and the Chicago Abortion Fund stood behind Mr. Rauner as he announced that he would sign a bill expanding abortion coverage for women on Medicaid. The Illinois House of Representatives called the decision “an absolute betrayal” and said he was withdrawing all future support for the governor.
“It was a hard-left, liberal stance,” said the floor leader, State Representative Peter Breen, who predicted that Mr. Rauner might now face a challenge in next year’s Republican primary campaign for governor.
Now, by signing the abortion law he had once seemed to oppose, he has enraged the conservative wing of his own party and added to a sense of tumult  within the Republican Party.
(Feedback): I believe that he did the correct thing by signing the bill, I know this is a touchy subject but in the long run if a women will not and cannot provide the best life possible for that child, for whatever reason I feel she should have the right in any state to take the actions needed. And for personal reasons I don't want to offend anyone therefore that's all I have to say on the subject

Speed over Safety? (Foreign Food warning) By:Thalia Wallace

https://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2017/09/28/world/asia/28reuters-china-delivery-accidents-insight.html (SUMMARY):
In Beijing , a scooter driver  on a food delivery run dashes across a busy intersection slick with rain, hits a turning car and is hurled along the tarmac in a video posted by Chinese police warning that couriers should slow down while on the road.
China's home delivery boom, powered by an estimated three million couriers, most of them riding quiet electric scooters or boxy three-wheelers, has triggered a significant increase  in road accidents, prompting warnings from police and complaints from drivers who say they feel pressure to put speed before safety.
"Accidents happen all the time at rush hour. I have a friend who was hit by a car and could not work for two months" said a food courier in Beijing. After 76 injuries and deaths involving food delivery drivers in Shanghai were recorded in the first half of 2017 alone, police called in China's largest food delivery companies in late August to warn them to improve safety standards.
(Feedback): I think that we as Americans need to take more precautions as well.  Too often we hear of people dying on the road because of unsafe drivers and people who are not aware of their surroundings . Even though it may not be because of food delivery it is still causing deaths to occur at an unnatural rate.

Restaurant in S.Carolina banns N.F.L. until protest ends By:Thalia Wallace

In Greenville, South Carolina A restaurant (owner) says he won't show NFL games on television until all players stand during the performance of  the national anthem.    David McCraw (Owner) of the "Palmetto" Restaurant and "Ale House" in Greenville said that on Sunday he would no longer show NFL games after players began kneeling during the anthem. McCraw said he would show games again once all players pay respect to the American flag and the country. His actions occurred only days after President Trump said last week that any NFL players who kneel during the anthem should be fired. That in return, prompted more players to kneel during Sunday night games. Other players stood and locked arms with teammates or stayed behind  in the locker rooms until after the anthem was played.

(feedback):I feel as if though the players shouldn't be punished for protesting against the inequalities  and injustices that have been occurring in america recently, in fact, it is a direct violation to the 1st amendment which states we as citizens have the freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and the right to peaceful assembly  . So how is that by them exercising these rights that our founding fathers so graciously extended to us makes it okay to fire them? If anything,I applaud them for being courageous and taking a stand for what is right. It maybe easier to do the good thing , but these men are brave enough to do the right thing.

Matthew Sanchez.   Hurricane Harvey hit Huston Texas on September 3, 2017.This displaced 30,000 people including 83 confirmed deaths. This caused 17,000 rescue missions. This relates to the more recent history. Back in 2005 Hurricane Katrina hit Cuba, parts of the US and other areas. Unfortunately Katrina took the lives of nearly 2,000 people.

Matthew Sanchez   19 injured and one killed after a speeding car ran trough counter protesters in Charlottesville.Tensions began to rise after a Confederate monument was taken down, yelling turned into shoving and shoving into all out brawling. This obviously relates to the Civil War because it was the the cause of the whole conflict.

                    Taxing the wealthy
A republican tax plan is introducing the idea of taxing the wealthy. This is very similar to different taxes on the settlers' goods. It's similar in the sense that even tho money isn't an issue, the idea of being taxed without consent was appalling. Many settlers felt thisv way after a tax on tea.

After Hurricane Irma hit Florida, access to gas is limited, similar to what happened in Texas after Harvey. Before the Hurricane even hit, people rushed to stock up on gas and created a shortage before the hurricane caused one. Almost 60% of gas stations are without gas, making it difficult for people to return to their homes after evacuating. And with ports being closed, it’s very difficult for them to restock the storage. Power is also out in many places, so any pumps that had gas are inaccessible. With every hurricane that hits, gas shortage is always a major problem, so the government might need to find a solution to the problem, but there may not be a way to fix it.

The civil war ended over 100 years ago, but we are still having issues with it today. As a memorial of the war, statues of confederate leaders were built across the south, more than a hundred years ago. Today the debate is over whether these statues should be kept because they are apart of history or if they are symbols of racism and slavery. The whole situation exploded after a man in South Carolina killed 9 African American people to start a race war. In my opinion, statues are put up to honor great leaders, and museums are made to recognize history. Therefore these leaders don’t deserve statues because they represent something America doesn’t stand for, and should be kept in museums.

Hurricane Maria has left the entire island of Puetro Rico destroyed. The whole island is without power and necessities and food supplies are depleting. There is also a curfew inforced, dawn to dusk, most likely to insure safety. Gas levels are low and of course no cell service. With the U.S being in control over of Puerto Rico, they sent thousands of troops to aid in repair. I think that this situation is a big issue for the developement of this country, and is the effects of the hurricane are so devastating because the country is so underdeveloped and technologically behind.

A rockfall at El Capitan left one person dead and another injured. El Capitan is the most prominent granite cliff in Yosemite National Park. The fatal accident is said to have happened near the waterfall route which is one of the most popular climbing routes. The park rangers saw the dust in a cloud from different places in the park, little did they know the toll that this particular rockfall would take.

It is important to enjoy nature but at the same time make sure people are being safe. This is a protected and somewhat commercialized national park if the rocks weren't sturdy they should not have people risking their lives to climb on them.

This past weekend rap artist Pitbull sent his private plane to Puerto Rico, which had been deeply hit by the hurricane, to transport cancer patients back to the states for chemotherapy treatment. Hurrican Maria has such a large effect in Puerto Rico leaving only half of its people with drinking water and the entirety of it in ruins. Of the 69 hospitals there, only 11 of them had power as of Tuesday. Pitbull has not been very public about this mission, when asked about it he said through a spokesperson "Thank God we're blessed to help. Just doing my part."

The humbleness and kindness that Pitbull shoes is how more of our public figures should learn to act. Helping others not just for the publicity but simply out of the kindness of his heart. He is a role model to people everywhere.

The Foreign Minister of North Korea, Ri Yong Ho, accused President Trump of declaring war on them by tweeting that North Korea “wont be around much longer". North Korea is now saying they have rights to all self-defensive counter measures which includes shooting down US strategic bombers.Sarah Sanders says it is never ok to shoot down another nations aircraft. officially how ere, the white house says we have not declared war on north korea.

I think this shows how serious words can be taken and that important figures should be more careful about what they say online and what it could mean when taken out of context. This whole threatening situation all started over a tweet from our nations president.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/25/sports/football/cowboys-cardinals-anthem-protest.html

Interesting turn of events. Recently, there has been controversy surrounding Trump and Colin Kapernick and the effect he had when he "took the knee". Several teams have followed suit to make a statement, much to Trump's chagrin. Surprisingly, on Monday's football game, when the Dallas Cowboys took the knee, Trump, uncharacteristically went to Twitter to call the Cowboys' actions, "progress",  due to them taking the knee BEFORE the National Anthem. The Cowboy's team leaders, Jerry Jones and Jason Garrett remained vague about their comments surrounding the topic.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/north-korea-s-kim-jong-un-calls-president-trump-frightened-n803631

This is an interesting and mildly humorous story in amidst of the tension between America and North Korea. On September 21st, Kim-Jong Un, leader of North Korea, in a response to President Trump's United Nation speech, repeatedly insulted Trump while addressing his remarks. In his response, Kim Jong Un compared him to a frightened dog and a gangster fond of playing with fire. He also later called him a "dotard', an arcane term used for a weak minded elderly person. The response made history as
South Korea's government said it was the first such direct address to the world by any North Korean leader. This only further goes to show how outlandish and ridiculous this tumultuous time in the world is as we are now at the point where two leaders of some of the biggest and most powerful countries in the world, are hurling insults at each other like preteens.

Lane Ford

https://techcrunch.com/2017/09/27/the-trump-card/

And the Trump train keeps on rolling. Today, for no apparent reason, Donald Trump has taken to Twitter to state that apparently, Facebook is "anti-Trump" and has always been "anti-Trump". Ironically enough though, during his infamous campaign, Trump used Facebook to propel his campaign and unite his supporters, making his current statements, questionable to say the least. Facebook CEO and creator Mark Zuckenberg later made a response on the "anti-Trump" site stating the following "Trump says Facebook is against him. Liberals say we helped Trump. Both sides are upset about ideas and content they don’t like. That’s what running a platform for all ideas looks like." And well, it just seems that this incident and bizarre behavior has become a part of everyday life in Trump's America.

Sad news... A 15 year old boy was stabbed to death during class in NYC also a 16 year old boy is in critical condition. From my understanding this is the first time it has happened in 25 years, (thats a while). This leads me to wonder why the person stabbed him in the first place, maybe he had beef with the dude or was just straight up messed up in the head, it was probably a bit of both, either way theres consequences for this person.

So apparently people are petitioning to remove the statue of football star ray lewis over his protest during the national anthem. If you saw my post from earlier you would know that I mentioned that sports and politics should not be mixed together and some would argue that sports is already politicised but if it already is then theres no need to add more.  Now somewhere in the neighborhood of 35,000 people have signed this petition to remove the statue over Ray Lewis kneeling down during the anthem. My advice football players... Play football on the football field and express your political opinions in your personal life, remember, people come to football games to have fun not fight.

The intended purpose of this move was to protect South Korea and Japan, or attack north korea either way north korea does not want a war but they seem to try to justify why there should be a war by threatening the united states. but resulted in the united states putting preventative measures against the rogue state then causing this endless chain.

John Elway, The president of the NFL "wants to take politics out of football". I completely agree with him, sports should just be about entertaining spectators and fans rather than serving as a platform for any kind of politics. In my personal opinion theres enough violence between fans of different teams, theres no need to add any more to this with politics. There was a controversy between people about the football players kneeling during the anthem , the controversy could've been avoided altogether if the players just respected the anthems and avoid mixing politics with  sports, some things just aren't meant to be mixed together and this is one of them.

This is an important technical and business announcement, because it means that Tesla finally has real competition in the self-driving car market. I expect that this will turn into something of a race to get the first, best self-driving car. This may also make Lyft relevant once more in comparison to its much better know rival, Uber.

After the hurricane that hit Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, disaster relief efforts have been a top priority of the parts of our government that weren't distracted by being upset at peaceful protests. It has gotten to the point that they are forbidding government lawmakers from visiting them using government aircraft, so as not to get in the way of relief efforts. This has disgruntled many senators, as it stops them from gaining publicity from their visits. Some are still going on commercial flights, but many have cancelled their trips entirely. I think this shows who actually cares and who just wanted pictures of them caring.

Shayne Grant: Trump warns North Korea of 'devastating' military option

US President Donald Trump has issued another warning to North Korea threatening the country with a "devastating" military option. This follows North Korea moving some of their fighter jets and missiles to the eastern coast in preparation of an attack. North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho claimed that the president had declared war on the small nation and that the country would shoot down any US planes off the coast even if they were in international airspace. The US flew bombers from Guam, the furthest north of the DMZ in the 21st Century. The President has said that all military options are on the table and that North Korea will be devastated if they try to take action. The White House also denied any claims that the US had declared war on North Korea calling the statements foolish.

This back and forth rhetoric from the countries is very scary. The article comes from a reliable source at CNN and is direct from the US Government. From the article, it seems that both countries are moments away from striking each other and totally annihilate each other. Both sides need to back down from the harsh and reckless rhetoric that they are both using. If they do not, something serious could come out of this and an avoidable mistake will take place with devastating consequences.

War of Words getting US nowhere good by Jules Stowe

It has been well known that there is a verbal battle of spiteful criticism and maybe-empty threats between Trump and Kim Jong-un, but is it well known that we seem to be coming closer and closer to military conflict? Trumps speech referenced "totally destroying North Korea" and it seems that that is become more and more likely. Military conflict between North Korea and America has been growing at an exponential rate, and the war planes guarding both our borders may indicate that this conflict will only escalate further.

This is extremely relevant to American History because it is a literal war. Of course we've had wars within all of our lifetimes, and there are obviously people still alive today that fought in said wars, but this one may be the most devastating we've had yet. Both the US and North Korea are armed with weapons capable of killing millions, and its just a matter of how far both world leaders will go to defend their countries from what they think is a threat.

Puerto Rico Aid by Jules Stowe

Even though hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, leaving it powerless, help has yet to come. Residents are having to survive without water, food, and electricity. Federal Officers claim help is on the way, but the time seems to be dragging our for the citizens in Puerto Rico. At least 16 are dead, but without the needed help its hard to tell is that is all.

this is important because Puerto Rico is in fact the USA.Those people need to have help and supplies as soon as the possibly can or more people will get hurt and die. This series of hurricanes will most likely leave lasting devastation in their wake for year and years, and Puerto Rico is only a portion of the overall destruction.

Zoe Bator- Saudi Arabia to let women drive at last

Saudi Arabia to let women drive at last
Updated 11:06 PM ET, Tue September 26, 2017

Summary: Finally, Saudi Arabia has issued a royal decree that will finally allow women in the country to drive. The crowning of 32-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has helped lead to this finally happening. Mohammed bin Salman believes in increasing the number of women in the workforce, and to do that, allowing women to finally get behind the wheel was crucial. In fact, ever since Mohammed bin Salman was crowned, a series of changes for the betterment of society have been cycling through. This is all a part of the bigger picture, and what Mohammed bin Salman refers to as "Vision 2030." Vision 2030 is said to be a number of changes that include the involvement of women in the workforce by the year 2030.

Analysis: It's amazing to see where other countries are with gender equality... because I has no idea women weren't even permitted to drive in Saudi Arabia. But, I am so happy that they finally are, because that now makes women in every country around the world able to drive. It's no doubt that gender inequality is still going to be so prevalent in Saudi Arabia, despite the new edition of women into the workforce, but as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres wrote on his official Twitter it was "an important step in the right direction." Overall, I'm very glad Mohammed bin Salman is trying to better women's rights and reinvent the economy. It's just shocking to think the level of dehumanization women had and are having to go through in the country.

Selah Hunter- Donald Trump slams NFL kneeling protest as 'disgraceful'

Donald Trump slams NFL kneeling protest as 'disgraceful'

Summary:
President Trump is disgusted by the events of members of the NFL kneeling, or sometimes not even showing up, while the American anthem is being played or sung. Trump shares his feelings as usual, by tweeting them out, so not only the World can see how ignorant America’s President is, but as well as the whole world. Trump tweets things such as “General John Kelly totally agrees w/ my stance on NFL players and the fact that they should not be disrespecting our FLAG or GREAT COUNTRY!” as well as “The NFL has all sorts of rules and regulations. The only way out for them is to set a rule that you can't kneel during our National Anthem!”
On Tuesday, reporters asked Trump if he was giving to much attention to the NFL, to which he resonded saying the NFL is a very serious issue ( more important than the events in Puerto  Rico?). Some statistics show American’s opinion on the kneeling,

57 percent of Americans do not believe the kneeling players should be fired.
82 percent of Democrats and 29 percent of Republicans rejecting Trump's position.
58 percent said "professional athletes should be required to stand during the national anthem at sporting events

Analysis:

This article doesn't state the author, at least I can't find it, but I don't think there is any type of bias in the article, it seems to be strait up facts of everyone's opinion. What really irks me about Trumps statement are that he says that kneeling during the American Anthem should be against the rules for NFL players. That breaks  the first amendment. But Trump claims his constant tweeting and speaking out is protect d by the law. What Trum is really saying is that, you can protest and speak out, but as long as you speak out to the same things I believe in. This is one of the main reasons why America had a whole revolution, so they could speak out against their government freely if they feel it is not treating the people correctly.

North Korea vs Our President: Go. (Noah Huerta)

http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/26/politics/trump-north-korea-moves-fighters-missiles-fuel-tanks/index.html

This kinda speaks for itself really...
North Korea's officials and Donald Trump keep verbally threatening each other in an attempts to either create war or prevent it (but ultimately stand on the edge of either).
Recently, on Monday, the Foreign minister of North Korea "stated" that "Trump has declared war on us" by threatening to shoot down some missiles and then trump tweeted about it to make it worse.

It all just becomes a back and forth mess with predictable parallel to war in general.
(No pun intended) (haha jk Yeah I did intend that)

On the Indonesian island of Bali, tremors have begun to shake the region. More than 35,000 fled in fear of the volcano erupting again. With this pardon, we could see more law enforcement slip through the cracks when it comes to enforcing the law properly. As a society, we need to stop and think about what this means. US Military to Deploy USNS Comfort for Disaster Relief in Puerto Rico - Sam Romine

The US military is planning to deploy the USNS Comfort to help with the situation in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. The Comfort is a “seagoing medical treatment facility,” which will provide medical assistance while Puerto Rican officials focus on restoring power to other medical facilities.

The authors of this article are Barbara Starr, Zachary Cohen, and Ryan Browne from CNN politics, and the article was published the evening of September 26th. This means the information is very recent and most likely very reliable. Pertaining to the subject of this hurricane season and the disaster relief going on all over America, my prior knowledge is relatively small. I know that Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma struck weeks ago and inflicted massive damage on Texas and Florida, but I have not read about the assistance that is being given to the victims of these natural disasters. This article was written for people looking to stay up to date on the situation in Puerto Rico, but readers also might be interested in the president’s response to the events going on in Central America. The article was written to inform people on the situation in Puerto Rico and how it’s citizens are faring after Hurricane Maria. This information of the public is important so people are encouraged to donate to disaster relief and help victims of Maria get back on their feet, and this article is very similar to what has happened the past few weeks with Irma and Harvey, and the disaster relief going on in Texas, but the relief has never been of this magnitude or cost.

Taylor Knighton- Senate won't vote on GOP health bill

It was announced that the Senate will not vote on the Graham-Cassidy bill to repeal Obamacare, dealing with a devastating blow to President Trump and GOP lawmakers who tried to make a last attempt to deliver on the party's years-long campaign promise. They just don't have the votes. This might actually be a good thing because now people can keep their Obama healthcare if they have it and they don't have to worry about it being threatened again.... but we don't really know everything yet.

I think this is a good and bad thing because there are some people that wanted that bill to be passed but some people didn't. Healthcare is a primary essential you need to have and it should be affordable and easily attainable

Taylor Knighton- Trump: 'I wasn't preoccupied with the NFL'

Our ignorant President Donald Trump continued his rant against NFL players who take a knee during the national anthem at his joint press conference with the Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, calling it an "important situation." "I wasn't preoccupied with the NFL. I was ashamed of what was taking place," (which was a peaceful protest for racial equality!) Trump said when he was asked if he should've been focused on offering assistance to Puerto Rico. Trump also commented on Monday night's Dallas Cowboys -Arizona Cardinals game. During the game, Cowboys players and owner Jerry Jones linked arms and knelt before the national anthem. While it played they still were linking arms to show unity. In the beginning, Trump pointed out booing and "great anger" when they knelt and also he wrote of the team's standing for the anthem, "Big progress being made."Moral of the story is more people are standing up against the social injustice in this country and it is not disrespectful to the U.S. or the military for exercising your right to protest when and how you want, you would be doing yourself and the country a disservice if you didn't use your voice.

I would personally like to thank the players that participated in these protests that have been happening. This country is really great and amazing but part of it is messed up and people need to become aware that they have to the right to protest and they have a say in what happens in this country. In history, this is connected to Dr. Martin Lurther King's peaceful protests and speeches as well.

Due to the recent terrible  hurricane in Puerto Rico which caused a large ammount of damage and left many without shelter, food, and with injuries, the U.S. has decided to send down the USNS comfort hospital ship to help the people of Puerto Rico who are in need. The U.S. Air Force is also sending down additional aircraft for support.

I think this is great that our government is helping Puerto Rico right now because they are obviously in need of a lot of help after the recent horrible hurricane.

Ian Hille 6th period post #3

Recently, the Saudi Arabian government has started to ease restrictions on women driving. According  to the Saudi Arabian Foreign ministry's official twitter, a royal decree has been issued that will allow women to drive. A committee has been formed and will work to have everything ironed out within the next 30 days.

I think this is great that the women of Saudi Arabia will finally have the rights to drive. In the U.S. things like that can often be taken for granted because we are so used to it, but it is important to remember that we are lucky to have what we have here in the U.S. and that not everyone is as fortunate as we are.

Man in a Coca-Cola Costume Robs a Restaurant

http://www.foxnews.com/food-drink/2017/09/26/restaurant-robbed-by-gun-wielding-thief-in-coca-cola-costume.html

Yes, you read that correctly. A man in Kentucky is wanted by the police. He showed up to the Rally's restaurant on Monday morning before they had opened and only the manager was present. He came dressed in a Coca-Cola costume and a gun forcing the manager to take him to his office. He escaped with at least $500 before driving off. there is now a $5000 reward that will be given by the company to anyone who has information on the thief to give.

This article CERTAINLY caught my attention. It seems like something that you'd get off of the onion. well this actually happened. It was a good thing that no one got hurt. but wow. Does anyone know the bottle man?

Carlo Lomas-Death of transgender teen in Missouri surrounded in mystery

Even as authorities in rural southern Missouri dismiss the possibility that a transgender teenager’s death was a hate crime, questions remain about why the quiet 17-year-old was killed in such a ghastly manner.
Authorities identified the burned remains as those of Joseph Matthew Steinfeld Jr. —the birth name of a transgender girl who went by the name Ally Lee Steinfeld. The remains were found last week in the town of Cabool, near the mobile home of one of the alleged killers, 24-year-old Briana Calderas, with whom Steinfeld was living. Some of Steinfeld’s bones were in a bag in a chicken coop. Authorities said both eyes were gouged out and Steinfeld had been stabbed in the genitals.
Calderas and two 18-year-olds, Andrew Vrba and Isis Schauer, were charged with first-degree murder and other counts. A fourth suspect is charged with abandonment of a corpse and tampering with evidence. All four are jailed without bond.
Steinfeld had been missing for weeks, and initial news reports referred to her as a male, in part because missing-person posters distributed by the family used Steinfeld’s birth name, as did police documents.
Steinfeld’s mother, Amber Steinfeld, still refers to her child as Joey, but said the teen identified as female to family and to friends on social media. She said her child was “loving and kind-hearted.”
Steinfeld was engaged to a woman until they broke up in August, Amber Steinfeld said, and soon after began dating Calderas. She said Steinfeld and the two 18-year-old suspects were all living at Calderas’ mobile home. She said that Steinfeld was upbeat before she disappeared, telling relatives that she loved them and was happy.
Authorities aren’t saying what led to the killing. But both Sheriff James Sigman and prosecutor Parke Stevens Jr. insist the crime was not motivated by Steinfeld’s gender identity.

Wolfgang Hunter-Washington State Deals Blow to Plan for Coal Export Terminal

In Washington state, state government has blocked action for a prominent coal exporting company to ship coal from the Western United States to East Asia. The company, if granted permission, could have potentially increased U.S. coal exports to Asia by around forty percent. Worries for environmentalists include the pollution of water and damage to local ecosystems from the company, while the deal could have brought forth a stimulation of regional economy and revival of job loss.

I am personally a bit conflicted on whether supporting the decision from the Department of Ecology. I do believe that they are justified in the decision, but Washington state is in moderate need of economic stimulation. The damage done to the environment, however, in contrast to job loss and economic bore, isn't necessarily a 'quick-and-easy' irreversible action.

Chloe Villa-Abrille | The United States Response to Hurricane Maria

Recently Puerto Rico has been hit with the devastating Hurricane Maria. In response, Homeland security adviser, Marine Corps for assistance, Tom Bossert, and Brock Long, Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator have made some efforts to aid the disaster. Though, the president has made few efforts to help and has disregarded the situation. At the moment a disaster relief request is in the works and will soon be worked through Congress. Hopefully this relief program will be passed and with the FEMA’s $5.03 billion available spending, another $6.7 billion can be added through the request. Sahrah Sander comments on the White Houses actions as, “anything but slow” and “too early to decide on an amount to spend for repairs.” While Puerto Rico’s Governor, Ricardo Russello points out this could become a humanitarian crisis and needs aid as quickly as possible before things become dire, not to mention Puerto Rico is part of the United States and as a should be given aid just like any other region of the US would. At the moment the already impoverished island is now with out basic necessities, power, and any mean of communication causing aid the come at a slower rate, to rebuild Puerto Rico aid from others will be needed.

Written by Deirdre Walsh and Kevin Liptak for CNN, this report was meant to inform the general public over the devastating Hurricane Maria that hit Puerto Rico. It also gave a look into US action for this situation, and the matter seems to be being dealt with quickly with fundraising and request being made to aid the island, but the sad fact is that the president is giving this situation no mind, he chooses to disregard the situation and hasn’t spoken about it, but when the previous two hurricanes hit, he chose to visit and support those who had been caught in the event. Puerto Rico is part of the US and should be treated like it, while Puetorican citizens can risk their lives and fight in the war for the US, they still are denied the right to vote or represent themselves. Puerto Rico was already in a bad state to begin with, and now it’s become even worse, hopefully with the aid from other the small island can rebuild themselves.

Jeson Aviles - In NYC, Relatives, Activists Rally On Third Anniversary of 43 Missing Mexican Students

With the recent tragic events of the earthquakes, relatives and activists of Mexico and the United States have not concluded their search for the 43 missing students declared dead by the government. It is the 3rd anniversary since their disappearance today (having occurred on September 26 of 2014). Families and support marched the streets of New York, as well as in Mexico, in protest of the possible lies given to them about their children.
September 26, 2014, marked the night where police armed with automatic weapons surrounded 3 buses of students from the Ayotzinapa Teachers' College, commandeered for a protest. These unarmed students were shot at, then running through streets of Iguala, in search of escape from the bullets searching for them. 6 people had been shot dead, the youngest victim of 15 years old; then the 43 student teachers and others went missing. The Mexican government declared them all dead, supposedly murdered when they were handed over by the police, on orders, to Guerreros Unidos, a drug gang, who apparently burned their bodies in a garbage dump. An forensic report by forensic scientists showed evidence that opposed the official report of the incident - suspects had been tortured illegally in order to weave out testimonies to support the lies.

What has Betsy DeVos done this time?- Isabella Firsching

In just her first 6 months, Betsy DeVos has stripped away the rights of both transgender individuals and sexual assault victims on college campuses. In an effort to make campus rape investigations more "fair and impartial" DeVos has rescinded an Obama-era policy, which made the punishment of those accused of sexual assault much more likely. The standard of evidence against the accused it now much higher, so high in fact that many victims cannot provide such evidence. Know Your IX, a youth-led campaign to end sexual violence, sees this decision as a "betrayal" and believes that the rescission will make it easier for schools to stack investigations against victims and even push them out of school entirely. Many against the rescission think DeVos has not faced the all too real truth that 1 in 4 women will be sexually assaulted while on campus.
I honestly cannot believe she tried to make this sound positive, there is absolutely no justification, in my mind at least. My first current event was about the removal of transgender rights and it included college campuses, so I knew more about that side before reading this. I completely agree with the members of Know Your IX, the one thing the rescission will accomplish is making getting away with rape and sexual assault easier.

In Iraq, the Kurdish region recently held a successful vote to secede from Iraq and create their own nation. This is technically meaningless, but so was the Declaration of Independence. This will stand as a powerful point of argument in discussions with the central Iraqi covernment. The government of Iraq, however, is trying desperately to hold on to the Kurdish region because of its natural oil supply. The entire rest of the world (except Israel) had warned them not to hold this vote, because it would destabilize the peace, but the Kurds are too proud to stay in Iraq. Personally, I support them.

This past Tuesday, senate lawmakers decided not to hold a vote to kill the ACA at last. The deadline for insurers to register with the ACA is Wednesday, so Obamacare will survive at least through 2018. This poses some danger to Republican senators who are running for reelection next year, as they will have directly lied to their base this term. Some are holding strong on their anti-ACA opinions, such as  Senator Orrin G Hatch, who said, “I personally think it’s time for the American people to see what the Democrats have done to them on health care. They’re going to find they can’t pay for it, they’re going to find that it doesn’t work. . . . Now that will make it tough on everybody. Maybe that’s what it take to wise people up.” I strongly disagree, and am silently celebrating that the Trump administration has failed to kill this benefit to our lives.

Volcano Threat

The last eruption that happened on mount Agung in Bali happened in 1963 and killed more than 1000 people. People living in the area now are being warned to prepare masks and other gear against health hazards. as the highest point in Bali, it is prone for it to bring many deadly threats.

Volcanoes are wack. but like the dude in the article said, "today, too many people live in disaster prone areas." Well, I hope that they will be safe. stay clear of the "danger zone"

60% Puerto Rican Now Homeless

After hurricane Maria, puerto Ricans have been left in conditions that are getting worse. although they are provided food by shelters, there is still no running water and no power, but their biggest worry is health care. nearly a week after the storm, many areas are still very flooded, but others are slowly gaining water and even electricity.

This article caught my attention. Puerto Rico is part of American and over 10,000 people are still left homeless. it must be terrifying and I cant even imagine how hard it could be

Madison Pollak// 35 people arrested after rally held for Meriden couple ordered to leave the country

Giaconda and Franklin Ramos have been in the U.S for 20 years, since the mid 90’s they have been trying to obtain legal citizenship. Although their documents might not say there “American” they are Americans at heart, they have a whole life in this country including two sons that are legal U.S citizens. Over the years they have been granted stays, but on Friday they were ordered to leave the U.S and return back to Ecuador.
A protest occurred in front of the Immigration and Customs enforcement in Hartford, it was a plea of desperation to save Giaconda and Franklin Ramos from deportation. Although the demonstration ended peacefully 35 protesters were arrested. Giaconda and Franklin Ramos plan to not take refuge and hope they can tie another green card through the sponsorship of there son.
This article was written to inform readers about the protest that occurred in front of Immigration and Customs enforcement in Hartford and allowed readers to view the hardships that friends and family face when a loved one is getting deported.

Our Country currently is receiving lots of hate and backlash from citizens about  policies and societal issues, regarding this it intrigues me that people like Giaconda and Franklin Ramos are lining up to live in a country they love although it might not love them back. This made me realize it’s not our Country, which we should be mad at, but the administration running it.

Bobby Pinnock-35 PEOPLE ARRESTED After Protest Held for Family Being Deported

http://www.wfsb.com/story/36442532/rally-set-for-meriden-couple-who-were-ordered-to-leave-the-country

After a rally was held for a family facing deportation, 35 were arrested after the peaceful protest.

I hope this isn't a foreshadow of the future, as the United States seems to be adopting more harsh immigration policies.

Hurricanes and Our Minds// Thursdae Sierocki

Hurricanes affect more than just our physical surroundings, they affect us on a huge psychological level. "Unlike the physical damage which is all too obvious, the psychological toll will have effects that cascade over time," says Dr. Octavio N. Martinez Jr. The physical effects can eventually be cleaned up and homes can be restored but the emotional and mental effects can last lifetimes. Anxiety, difficulty sleeping, and sadness are all effects that are overlooked because their normalicy in society. Most articles you read only focus on the ways people's lives are torn apart but never on how this will effect parents, children, families for years to come.
This article was written within the time of several hurricanes as a result of global warming. It speaks to the audience in multiple ways b connecting physical issues with mental problems to ruin families lives in years to come. The article is educating people on the overall effects of a hurricane, more than the eye can see.

Connor Norton - Merkel’s stumble in the German election has big implications for Europe

The recent German elections have been tough for chancellor Angela Merkel, whose party came out on top but by the smallest margin since 1949. This is a crushing blow, as it shows a shift in support from Merkel to her competition both in her and similar parties as well as across the political spectrum; it also means she has to make concessions when legislating as Merkel is now ruling a split government with numerous representatives from more varying parties all needed to find common ground if any legislation is to passed in a democracy utilizing voting and majorities. Now, if this were any other country the obscuring of the path to full leadership and the shift in the ideology of the masses might not be as impactful to the rest of the world, but as this is Germany, arguably one of the two most important economic and democratic powers in Europe and the EU, this could dampen the productivity of governance and regulation of said EU and may lead to a similar change in voting trends in other European nations, which could theoretically have a big impact on the whole continent or even the whole world.

The struggles of ruling a country with a government that's against you can be easily seen in the presidency of Andrew Johnson. In post-Civil War America, Johnson came into power as a result of the assassination of Lincoln, meaning he was not brought into office with a shift towards his ideals by the general public; in fact, he was very much opposed to many of the actions and strategies employed by Lincoln, the man the American people actually elected. Johnson, a conservative faced with a socially liberal Republican congress, got a grand total of nothing done in office; congress used its power to override vetoes using a super-majority for the first time during his presidency, blocking multiple vetoes before putting his impeachment on the table, with the House voting to do so and the senate acquitting him by an impressive 1 vote. Now, the opposition faced by Johnson during his term was far greater than what Angela Merkel will be dealing with in the near future, and I'd argue the congress Johnson faced was much more just than the man himself while I tend to lead towards Merkel and not her competition, American history can serve as an example of when democratic opposition is taken to its extremes.

http://abcnews.go.com/International/north-korean-minister-trump-declared-war-country/story?id=50077941
Summary: The North Korean minister has announced that President Trump has declared war. Trump tweets his response to further spiral this situation out of control.

Analysis: Well, great. This is just what the US needs at the moment along with all of the natural disasters and destruction and inner anarchy. If North Korea thinks that we have declared war on them, it could potentially lead to disaster. Much like the Cold War, both North Korea and the US have nuclear weapons; and at this point both sides are eager to obliterate each other. The US also doesn't have the financial stability to support another war, and it could overall topple the US economy. In conclusion, war is bad and we should not have a war.

Anthony Weiner jailed for 21 months for sexting underage girl

Link:

A former New York congress man, Anthony Weiner, was sentenced to 21 months in prison for lewd instant text messages sent to an underage girl. US District Judge Denise Cote said: Weiner "has a disease. He has a compulsivity. Some say a sex addiction." He knowingly asked a 15 year old girl to send him photos of her body and asked her to undress on camera.

I think thay this is absolutely disgusting and the fact that he tried to revive his political career is actually messed up. He needs to accept the fact that his career is over and stop promoting this kind of behavior. If he had been elected mayor of New York, it would show someone who can do those awful things can still be successful and be an authority figure.
