No One Likes Trumps Immigration Plan (Shocker) by Jules Stowe

Trump has just made it clear he does not intend to enforce new law that would have punished Russia for interfering with the 2016 election. To literally no one's surprise, Trump was dragged in the press for doing the bare minimum (if even) to stop foreign interference in the election again. Even several Senate member have written him a letter talking about how his inadequate action is "unacceptable". One official even goes as far as to claim "the president of the United States is not taking action to defend this nation."

This is wildly important because this means, with no real punishment for tampering in he US election, foreign countries basically have free reign over our political process. Considering there is nothing stopping another country form absolutely wreaking havoc on the voting system, it is bound to happen again. Action needs to be taken and our laws need to be justly enforced.

super blue blood moon

on Wednesday morning, there will be not only a supermoon or a blue moon, but a lunar eclipse as well. the supermoon is caused by there being a full moon in the time when the moon is closest to the earth. the blue moon is not literal but actually refers to the second full moon in the same month, the first one being on January first. lastly, the blood moon is the lunar eclipse which turns the moon a redish color giving it its name. this happening is very rare as the last time this triple effect has come together was about 150 years ago.

you probably already new what a supermoon, blue moon, and blood moon were but I thought to include it since that's what the article had. but generally this is very exciting and reminds me of the solar eclipse that happened.

Carlo Lomas - Child Marriage in America

In Florida's halls of power, Sherry Johnson is somewhat of an anomaly: a black woman who grew up destitute and survived child abuse. Her story is shocking. Raped at 8 and pregnant at 10, she was forced to marry her rapist at 11. She had to abandon high school after the babies kept coming. For years, she kept silent. But now, her voice rings clear in chambers where the state's laws are made. Her unrelenting public pleas to end child marriage are being heard. After a lifetime of struggle, Johnson's time has come. Finally.

Caroline Carter-More news on Hawaii's false missile alert

The January 13th false missile alert in Hawaii was not entirely caused by a worker mistake─the worker was told that the drill was, in fact, not a drill, and a serious threat to the island. Officials at Hawaii Emergency Management Agency has reported that the worker in question had also made numerous mistakes in the past and had a history of poor performance. Associated press also stated that the worker was told to cancel the alert but that he did not respond to the order. However, the most troubling thing about this incident is the fact that it took 45 minutes for a correction to be sent through the alert system despite both the agency's and Hawaiian governor's knowledge of the mistake.

Hawaiian safety and welfare has never truly been a main concern of the United States government. In the 1890's, when it was of the most importance to the US, was about the only time that the islands actually mattered to us. Now that our interests are in East Asian markets, Hawaii's resources and well being have fallen to the back burner. Hawaii is a member of the United States and it deserves to be treated as such. The US prides itself on being multicultural and a place of equal opportunity, but if we do not take care of those cultures and let things like this happen to our citizens, then exactly what are we?

Ronald Newberry a man from Cleveland was shot 16 times police was there but no ambulance was willing to the take the 22 year old man. Police reported that Ronald was just outside the limits in Euclid, Ohio of the city when they found him. They ( the police) had given Ronald CPR and had waited for an ambulance that never showed. The ambulances that were in Euclid were all away on calls so they needed an ambulance from a city farther away. While the police were on the call for medical attention Ronald was crying for help! Finally Ronald had a helicopter that took him to the hospital. He has made it through and is in recovery. The case is still under review

This is crazy we depend on these people, but there isn't enough people doing this job. Can You blame them? It's dangerous and hard to deal with all the pressure. I hope this doesn't happen again and they can fix the policy, and hopefully they have more people to do more jobs!

U.S. soldiers are revealing sensitive and dangerous information by jogging - Connor Norton

A few months back the GPS tracking company Strava, using data from such hit technologies as the Fitbit exercise watch, published an interactive "Global Heat Map" showing bright red lines where users have been jogging or at least fast-walking. This is all good fun when people look at residential America, at this point just giant blobs of red where multitudes of people have been running around for months while wearing fitness trackers; this becomes a problem, however, when you look on the map at less-industrialized countries (the citizens of which can't afford or don't want Fitbits). This is because, as the Pentagon was no doubt shocked to find out, people can find secret US military bases in the Middle East by looking for the little red lines. An Australian first pointed out this out when he was looking at the map and was able to draw an outline of the Kandahar Air Base, and although this base was already known about by the public, it turned out to reveal a little too much information: not only did it mean ordinary people can find secret bases, it also means looking for lines drawn out around the bases in a loop or in straight lines could show patrol or trade routes! This is ubiquity pf watches is partly due to the popularity of said fitness watches, but is also because of a military agenda pushing Fitbits into the hands of soldiers in an attempt to promote personal fitness; but in the end it left the military vulnerable to the growing publicity of information that's become a hallmark of this day and age.

This kind of event is a powerful reminder that people and the institutions they run have to adopt to the changing times and the technologies they bring, or else they face being put at a disadvantage or even at risk. Here that risk is in the form of giving possible enemies a wealth of sensitive information in an era in which it has never been easier to share such info, but such a technological disadvantage has happened before; for example, during the Second World War, the Allies were sharing information via an old and outdated system of codes that the Germans were easily able to crack; this put a lot of people in danger and was a terrible strategic failure. Still, due to a rise in efforts to combat the Germans' superior communication abilities, the Allied powers were able to develop new and innovative codes to stump the Germans (see: the Navajo Code Talkers) and even break the unbreakable German codes themselves (see: the enigma machine, Bombe, and Alan Turing). Seeing the outcome of that war, it may be wise for the modern military to follow in its predecessor's footsteps (in this way at least).

Cleveland Man Shot 16 Times is Refused EMS Service - Jacob Meazle

Written: By Doug Criss at 6:26 PM ET on 1/20/18

Summary: On January 14, a gunshot victim, bleeding out into the snow of a curb in Cleveland, OH, was dying - and no ambulance would come. Once police arrived, they got on the phone with EMS dispatch, and they said "No ambulance will come. The victim drove into a different city, so we can't help." The victim, 22 year old Ronald Newberry, then began to plead with police to help him. After all measures were evaluated, police took Newberry in the back of a patrol car, to a trauma center. He was released a few days later.

Position: This is outrageous. Just send the man an ambulance for christ sake! He's been shot 16 times, and you won't send him an ambulance because he drove barely over city limits! That's terrible!

Liam Wise - Puerto Rican Refugees live in U.S. Hotels

In early December of last year, scores of Puerto Rican citizens were displaced from their rightful homes as a result of the violent hurricane that ravaged the island. 4 months after Maria’s devastation of the country, more than 3,000 Puerto Rican refugees still live in hotels set aside by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Every 30 days, the families are reconsidered for more permanent housing, provided by FEMA’s Transitional Shelter Assistance Program. Things look bleak for many of the families, as at this point in their lives, they have to choose between staying for a chance at housing, or returning to a torn Puerto Rico. Much of the colony still needs restoration of power and running water, leaving nearly half a million wanting for basic supplies. To those who were already fighting unemployment and poverty, these hotels are a safe haven from the lurking aftermath of a true disaster. Over the next five years, the government estimates that Puerto Rico will see a cumulative 19% decline in it’s population as a result of the lacking disaster relief efforts. As of now, they’re still a struggling population in need of assistance. Hurricane Maria has caused what some believe to be the biggest “Mainland Exodus” since the 1950s. This is indicative of the United States’ ability to sustain it’s satellite nations after a disaster, as Puerto Rico receives less and less attention.

House Republicans Vote to Release Secret Memo on Russia Probe- Miadora Ibanez

Summary- this evening, Republicans on the House of Intelligence Committee voted to release a memorandum (written message- in business or diplomacy) that was said to have accused the department and the FBI of misusing their authority to obtain a secret surveillance order on a former Trump campaign associate. This created major conflict during the presidential election of 2016 even more. Now the issue, President Trump has 5 days to review the document and decide whether to make it public or not. However in most cases where lawmakers try to declassify information it can take months or even years.

Analysis- this conflict seems to grow everyday with just more light shed on the topic, and I think it's truly sad that this is happening in our government system.

Adriann Wrice - senate reflects bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks.

https://www.google.com/amp/abcnews.go.com/amp/Politics/senate-rejects-bill-ban-abortion-20-weeks/story%3fid=52694912
Today the senate didn’t hit pass the law that made have an abortion a after 20 weeks illegal and making whoever performed the procedure serve up to five years in prison. Thought the final tally was 51-46 , which means they were awfully close to passing this law. Many republicans are still fighting for their beliefs

I am 100% pro choice so my opinion on this topic is greatly biased. I think that this is a scary topic. To deny a woman a right that you once gave them is scary. There a countless reason why a woman may need an abortion at 20 weeks and for men who don’t have to carry the baby they sure have a lot to say about the topic. I just think that they need to put themselves in the shoes of the women carrying the baby and go through all the scenarios that would make them want to get an abortion in the first place. Many people are quick to make a judgment just based on the cover. Though they do not know any real details about the situation. This is important to history because this determines some of the rights that us women have.

4 killed in Pennsylvania car wash shooting
Over the weekend four young adults lives were cut too short. They were shot and killed at a car wash in southern Pennsylvania. They have found and identified the gunman and noticed that he had taken a bullet to the head. The officials still don't know yet in the wound was self inflicted or not. There are many people on this investigation trying to understand the motive of the gunman. He had very many different guns on his body and other crazy things. Know one knows yet why this happened or is any of the victims knew him at all.
This is so scary and it happens too often. These poor families will never see their brothers and sisters again. The parents will never see their children, the friends wont see their BFF again. It is just so sad to think that their are crazy enough people in this world that would do such a thing. You hear it all the time but you truly cant stop crazy. I am thinking about all the families and friends of these victims. I cant imagine.

The suspicion about Trump's relation to Russia has greatened over the last several weeks and months. Robert Mueller, cheif investigstor, is digging to uncover the truth about the allegations. Of course, Trump denies all accusations about his involvement. Mueller believes that Trump's campaign has culled with Russian agents to influence the outcome of the election. The NSA and CIA belive that this is true. 19 of Trumps associates and aids have had contact with Russians and some have admitted about lying to authorities. Four men have been charged, two pleady not guilty and on pleady guilty to seeting up interaction with Russian Ambassadors. Rumors have been going around that Trump can fire Mueller, but if he does fire him it will only increase ours suspicions that he is guilty.

Alzheimer's is the 6th leading cause of death for Americans. Very few clinical trials are being run to fix this disease as the ones that are tested have a 99% rate of failing. The number of Americans diagnosed with Alzheimer's gets bigger every day. The number of Americans are suspected to have tripled by 2050. However, scientists have moved from trying to cure to his disease to trying to prevent it. A test done on mice, proved that the disease can be completely reversed by removing just one enzyme. Hopefully these studies lead to a bigger discovery in humans. It is important that a cure be found for this disease because it is taking so many people each and every day. This case is especially important to me because my grandmother has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's for a few years now and it'd be great to prevent other families from gong through what mine is experiencing now.

Four innocent people were shot and killed at a self-serve car wash by Timothy Smith in Pennsylvania. The relationship between these people and Timothy is unknown but the police will be looking into cell phone records to see if they can figure out the relationship. A woman who was riding in the backseat of one of the cars getting shot from the front got lucky and was able to duck for cover from the gunshots. This was a very terrorizing experience for everyone at the car wash that day.
I can’t imagine how terrible it would feel to be in this situation. An ordinary car wash should not be turned into a place of fear and death. I’m very glad that not too many people were injured and that this was not a mass shooting. I would like to find out the purpose and motives of Timothy’s attacks and if the victims actually deserved it.

Kentucky School Shooting

This past Tuesday, a school shooting took place in a Kentucky high school. A fifteen year old opened fire and injured 16 students, killing two. The two victims were 15 year olds Bailey Holt and Preston Cope. Bailey is described by her parents as an "angel on earth".  Her last act was calling her mother, but she was unable to speak other than panicked screams. Bailey died on the scene. "She was the perfect daughter," her parents said. Preston Cope was the other victim who suffered fatalities. Preston's family however, got to say goodbye to him. They arrived as he was being ushered into an ambulance. They said their good byes and I love you's, and Preston died on the way to the hospital. The suspect, who has not been released for he is a juvenile, is to face a grand jury in February and is being charges with murder and twelve counts of first degree assault.

This is is so frightening. The fact that a shooting has taken place nearly every single day of this year is so scary. I believe we need to make reforms. I understand that many want to protect their second amendment rights, but how many innocent lives have to be lost until change can be made? Adults and children alike have suffered at the hands of these malicious crimes. The suffering it brings to their families is a fate as painful as death. These young teens were innocent and had their whole lives ahead of them. It's really hard for me to read these types of articles, because the whole experience is excruciating. I do hope that we can take steps to prevent these tragedies and preserve the lives of so many.

City Arrests Citizens For Handing Out Free Food

“The number of people living on the streets in downtown San Diego has increased by 27 percent over the past year,” reported The Union Tribune. However, the activists were handing food and toiletries to homeless people in Wells Park, trying to make a positive impact, are being arrested. Officers report that “food sharing is not allowed,” because it is dangerous and could cause diseases. However most activists believe that the true reason behind this ban is because officials do not want to “waste” resources on the poor. Activists stand strong and say “[they] will continue this fight [even if it] takes them to court.”

The main idea being conveyed is that those who are less fortunate should have to fend for themselves, and those who are more privileged should stand by and watch, which just is not right. This article correlates to the idea of Social Darwinism in APUSH and the ideas conveyed in the Gospel of Wealth. The officers represent the idea of Social Darwinism, while the activists represent the ideas discussed in the Gospel of wealth, exposing the horrors of society’s “system,” and advocating for what’s right.

The rate of people dying from Alzheimer's disease in the United States rose by 55% over a 15-year period, new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows.
The number of those patients dying at home from the neurodegenerative condition also rose, from 14% to 25% over the same time period studied, 2009-2014.

This is important because Alzheimer's is a disease that needs to be cured. I hope that it can be contained and that no one has to suffer from a disease like this.

Nearly half a million in Puerto Rico still in the dark 4 months after Hurricane Maria

https://www.cnn.com/2018/01/25/us/puerto-rico-hurricane-maria-power/index.html

Summary:

Back in September of 2017, Puerto Rico was hit with hurricane maria. Maria reached winds of 155mph and it was the islands most devastating natural disaster int the past 85 years. The Puerto Rico electric Power Authority says that only 68.25%, as of Thursday, of the islands power is back. This includes commercial and industrial clients. The roofs of the residents homes are being replaced by tarps issued by the government. Many people are still living in 9 different shelters across the island and there is hotels still full of residents who's house suffered severe damage.

Analysis:

This news is devastating to hear. Even after four months the island is still facing little to no progress. Even if 68% of the islands energy is back i believe commercial business are the majority of that percentage and the main importance. Many citizens who live in village isolated from the most populated cities are probably being forgotten. PREPA, FEMA, and the US army engineer corps are all working together to return the electricity of the island.

When Mass Murder Is An Intimate Affair - Smithsonian

Omer Bartov is the Brown University professor of European history. For the past 20 years, he’s reconstructed the 400-year history of one Eastern European border town to show the deep-seated roots that led to genocide during World War II. He studied and analyzed the relationships that existed among Ukrainians, Poles and Jews in the town of Buczacz, where in a few years’ time, the German and Ukrainian police would almost completely eradicate Buczacz’s Jewish residents. Ukrainian nationalists, in turn, would devastate Buczacz’s Polish population. He wanted to focus on the individuals who carried out the genocide, rather than the large systematic forces’ eyes, seeing how neighbors turned on neighbors in the years leading up to World War II.

Bartov continued his studies when he moved to the United States and quickly noticed the lack of attention that individuals’ accounts were given, hence his determination to study a smaller, more concentrated area. I think he’s totally right in that more studies should be centered around individual views and diaries and studying the dynamics of people within communities. I think then can we fully contextualize, like Bartov wants, history.

Slave Ship Found? - MaKaria Harris

https://hmcurrentevents.com/slave-ship-found-in-alabama-delta/

By mid-1800s importing slaves into the US had  been illegal, although some defied the law.The Clotilda made its  journey after Timothy Meaher, a local plantation owner, made a bet that he could sneak slaves past federal officials and into the country. He bought the two-masted schooner and paid a captain, William Foster, to sail it to West Africa and collect 110 slaves from what is now Benin. The captain then navigated the Clotilda up the Spanish River, transferred the slaves to a riverboat and burned the ship and it sunk. Many of the ship's slaves settled a community north of downtown Mobile that became known as Africatown, after the civil war and some direct descendants still live in the area today.
It is very important if this is the ship because this a huge part of the people in Africatown's history and it should be memorialized because it's a representation for blacks to see.

House Republicans Vote to Release Secret Memo - Joaquin Sanchez

Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee, throwing aside Justice Department warning against their actions, vote to release a secret memo accusing the FBI of misusing their authority to acquire a secret surveillance order on a former Trump associate. This increased conflict over the questions and investigations regarding Russia's mixture in the 2016 elections. Republicans say that the memo will shed useful light on the possible political bias that possibly twisted the early stages of the Russia investigation without intelligence gathering. "Sadly, we expect that the president of the United States will not put the national interest over his own personal interest. But it is a sad day indeed when that is also true of our own committee," said Democratic Representative Adam B. Schiff. trump now has 5 days to look over the document and make the decision on whether to block it from going public or let it loose.

Recently, women have been standing up a lot against men and the cruelty that has been downplayed over the past decades that involve sexual abuse and assault. The Larry Nassar case is just one example. He was a USA gymnastic personal trainer/doctor. He has abused hundreds of children telling them they have to do it to be successful, and almost brainwashing the kids into thinking it was okay and that he was the best. Only just recently has all this information come out and gone to court in Michigan. It has ruled that for the rest of his life he will be in jail. Many of the victims of the assaults were at the case/ruling, including Aly Raisman, Olympic gold medalist. She was not allowed to speak her letter that she wrote for him, but her face and actions showed her will to stand against him.

I believe this is written for all women and men to educate us about how to stand strong and always stand up against evil things. This relates to APUSH, because around the industrial revolution, women became more involved and began standing up, just like we are now.

Henry Haas- Russian Roulette: President Edition

Today President Trump’s “war on Russia” escalated as speculation over certain acts in the whites house led to questionably unconstitutional motives by Trump’s consultants. The main basis the left has for these claims is the resignation of Andrew McCabe, chief director of the FBI. McCabe was very strongly anti trump in many circumstances and was reportadely seen looking into the President’s supposed involvement in the “Russian manipulation” of the election. White House representatives swore that the president had no involvement in his resignation, and there were no reports on any direct response from the commander in chief himself. This led to some conclusions being made off of very little evidence, something journalists tend to do a lot these days, and ultimately brought us to where we are now. Another big standoff between the left and right. This happened like a week ago guys come on.
Personally I feel both sides are being very childish when dealing with the situation. The right has some shady buisness going on, but none of it directly involves the president in the slightest. This means that Trump needs to get some affirmitive action goin on and get those people out of there or back in line. In the mean time, I feel it’s unjust for the media to make any unfair assumptions on the president based on the resignation of an FBI member. The White House even stated that they had nothing to do with it up there in the Oval Office. That is seemingly enough proof, however it seems CNN and some other places don’t think so. What do you think? Is it ok for the media to jump to conclusions for a good story or do you think that they were justified in doing so? Either way it looks like we could be on our way to another government shutdown so get ready folks.

Cleveland Indians discontinue "Chief Wahoo"

The Cleveland Indians (MLB) will change the team logo next year after receiving pressure over their image, "Chief Wahoo." Wahoo is a cartoonish image of a Native American, whom they've carried since 1948, but in 2019 the logo will no longer be used. The team has been edging away from the logo in recent years but will completely abandon the image at the beginning of 2019. Rob Manfred, the MLB commissioner, said that the Indians' management "ultimately agreed with my position that the logo is no longer appropriate for on-field use in Major League Baseball." Paul Dolan, Cleveland's chairman and chief executive, has said "We have consistently maintained that we are cognizant and sensitive to both sides of the discussion. While we recognize many of our fans have a longstanding attachment to Chief Wahoo, I'm ultimately in agreement with Commissioner Manfred's desire to remove the logo from our uniforms in 2019." Merch and items featuring the logo of Chief Wahoo will still be available at the team's store for retaining the trademark, but the logo will not appear on MLB website items.

Summary- After a fatal shooting, killing 4 people at a southern Pennsylvania car wash, the suspected gunman is now proclaimed dead. On Tuesday authorities announced this and that his death occurred from a self-inflicted gunshot wound that he died from at a hospital. Authorities aren't aware of any specific motive the gunman may have had but they do know that one of the victims, Chelsie Cline, had briefly been involved with him. Also, a women that was at the scene but managed to successfully hide in the back of a car is helping with the ongoing investigation.

Analysis- The whole situation in general is awful, but now the fact that answers will not be clear and motives won't be easily discovered is probably frustrating. Also this all goes back to gun violence in the first place, the 2nd amendment needs to be repealed or abolished or I don't even know. The memo on FISA- Victoria Bruno

FISA is basically what protects us from the abuse of the act of the government using surveillance of someone when they are considered a threat.

Summary:
Basically, The House Intelligence Committee would like to release the memo of FISA. This memo includes many counts of the abuse of surveillance, even with FISA in place. Many GOP lawmakers even saw this 4-page document as "troubling".  The white house seems to support the release, but Trump's support is unknown.

Personal stance:
I support the release of the documents for transparency's sake. There has not only been some opposition in the gov. to not release the documents, but also many people who read the document who said it was appalling. That, to me, is kind of a warning sign.

Relates to history:
Political corruption and abuse in the past occurred many times. This can be seen by how monopolies and trusts had a great power of influence of the gov.

A classified memo about the FBI's investigation on Russia's hacking is being voted on to be made public.
Problem is, this is not a partisan issue and is debated on by Democrats and Republicans since it is also about the president. This memo could contain "top secret" information about the FBI and is argued dangerous. This memo is also argued to bring up abuses in the FBI's surveillance, in the investigation, and is seen important to release.

The president has to make a choice on on declassifying the memo in five days.

“Tel Aviv Would Be “Razed to the Ground” if Israel Attacks”

On Monday, Iran issued a warning to Israel in response to the Prime Minister’s speech at the Security Conference. "Tel Aviv would be razed to the ground if the Israeli regime took any military action against the Islamic Republic," Iran's Expediency Council secretary Mohsen Rezaie said Monday, according to Iran's state-run Tasnim news. He also said he won’t “give any opportunity for Netanyahu to flee" if an "unwise move" is made against Iran, the semi-official Fars News Agency reported. "Israel will not allow Iran's regime to put a noose of terror around our neck," Netanyahu said. "We will act without hesitation to defend ourselves, and we will act, if necessary, not just against Iran's proxies that are attacking us, but against Iran itself."
Tensions between Iran and Israel have escalated recently with the ongoing Syrian war spilling into a proxy fight. Israeli forces then attacked 12 targets in Syria, including four targets described as Iranian, the Israeli military said.

Jay-Z slams Trump's 'shithole' comment as 'hurtful'

Recently, Jay-Z was asked if it was okay for Trump to rudely state that unemployment for African-Americans has dropped, Jay-Z said no, "because it's not about money at the end of the day. Money doesn't equate to happiness. It doesn't. That's missing the whole point. Black unemployment is at a record low. But there's a lot more to the story. "You treat people like human beings. That's the main point," he said. "It goes back to the whole thing -- 'Treat me really bad and pay me well.' It's not going to lead to happiness, it's going to lead to, again, the same thing. Everyone's going to be sick." Trump fired back at Jay-Z on Twitter early Sunday morning. "Somebody please inform Jay-Z that because of my policies, Black Unemployment has just been reported to be at the LOWEST RATE EVER RECORDED!" Trump tweeted. Jones responded, tweeting, "Someone needs to inform @realdonaldtrump that I ALREADY asked Jay Z whether black employment figures redeem Trump's presidency. And Jay's answer last night on the #VanJonesShow was POWERFUL!!!" Jay-Z explained that many African-Americans and people in middle America have reflexively voted Democrat for years because their families did, but their needs weren't addressed. "My problem with government is, I think they forget that it's real people behind these decisions that they're making. ... We're, like, people going through real things in real time and in real pain. And when you ignore that pain for so long, people -- they will act out, and it's like, 'I want to see something different." And that opens the door to what we're living through now."He added, "Now, politics has become about votes and not about people."  Jay-Z was a frequent visitor at the Obama White House but told Van Jones that he doesn't think he'll get invited while Trump is in office.Jones joked that Trump may surprise him, making a play to be the first "hip-hop president" because he would "get in beefs with people," likes bling and has a plane. "Yeah, well, he doesn't have the struggle," Jay-Z responded. I believe it is ridiculous that our president feels the need to argue on topics in which he is less informed, on especially when those arguments occur via twitter...

Bronx parents charged after 5-year-old found living alone in squalor- Taylor Knighton

Both parents have been charged after their 5-year-old boy was found on Friday living in a unsanitary apartment in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx. The little boy was found alone in the apartment by a Fed-Ex delivery man and later removed from the flithy apartment by local authorities. The young boy told police that his parents hadn't been home since Thursday night, according to ABC affiliate WABC in New York. He is the youngest out of the four children, he was the only one found in the apartment when authorities arrived. The mother of the young boy told authorities that she let the 5-year-old stay home alone because he was not feeling well, and that her other children were at school. She believed that the boy was old enough to take care of himself. The apartment was infested with roaches, rats, maggots and deceased rodents and authorities reported that the walls and floors  were covered with human fecal matter, blood and other DNA material, authorities said. The children's parents were arrested and arraigned on Saturday evening on charges of child endangerment. All of these four children have been placed into the custody of the New York City Administration for Children's Services. The Lewis’ bail has been set at $15,000 and they are expected to appear in court next month.

This is truly awful. What parent could do this to their child? I hope the children recover from this whole experience.

Grammys 2018 - Sam Wood

The Grammy awards this year had a massive drop in ratings. This could be due to a number of things, such as one skit where several musicians and even former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton auditioned to be the narrator for the audiobook version of "Fire and Fury," a book about President Trump's first months in office. This angered many people including Nikki Haley, the US Ambassador to the United Nations, who tweeted "I have always loved the Grammys but to have artists read the Fire and Fury book killed it,". But political controversy was just one part of the problem. Ed Sheeran won in the pop solo category. He beat out 4 women. Afterwards Neil Portnow (the president of the recording academy), said women will win Grammys when they "step up."I think this whole thing is dumb. I don't think the Grammy awards should be sexist and political. People watch the Grammys to see music they love win awards. This makes me very disappointed.

larsen nichols- black unemployment at new low, but that's not all

http://money.cnn.com/2018/01/23/news/economy/black-unemployment/index.html

Black unemployment in the U.S is at a new low, but that doesn't mean there isn't still a problem present. The racial unemployment gap between blacks and whites hasn't changed much over the years, partially due to way employers treat each race when hiring. In short, job availability and employment is increasing, but discrimination is not. In addition to that, having a job doesn't guarantee you can buy all the things you need to support yourself or a family.

This article was written by Lydia DePillis at CNN Money on January 25th. I don't know much about unemployment rates in this country, because I don't pay enough attention to developments in the economy, so I had no previous information regarding this article besides the fact that there's a major inequality across the board between races. I hadn't thought about the fact that when employers are permitted to hire through networks rather than interviews, whole races are completely obliterated from the competition. Though this article didn't say anything about how the government is reacting to these facts, I'll take a guess that the people currently in power have taken one look, said "Wow, isn't it great that black unemployment is at a new low? We did that! So we don't have to make that issue a priority anymore!" and moved on with their political agendas. What they need to be doing is taking a closer look to see the issues underneath those statistics. Too many politicians these days are content to see something good happen with a certain issue and then cross it off their to-do list.

Synthesis: This article is comparable to when political bosses used immigrants for votes in the late 1800's/Gilded Age. The political bosses helped the immigrants by providing food and shelter in return for their votes, but that wasn't all that they needed. It might've been more impactful for the immigrants to elect a candidate who actually represented their views and needs, not someone who abided by the wishes of their rich allies. It's a similar situation to how today's politicians think they're fixing the problems of minority groups, when in reality they're just sweeping them under the rug for someone else to deal with.

No Suspects in Pennsylvania Shooting - Amy Mills

Authorities say that they don't have any suspects in the shooting deaths of four men in a Pennsylvania home. They found Jarlyn Lantigua-Tejada (20), Juan Rodriguez (23), Joshua Santos (20), and an unconfirmed fourth man (believed to be in his early 20s). All victims were shot several times around 7 p.m. on Sunday. Investigators still haven't released information about a possible motive, but Deputy Chief James Marasco Jr. says that authorities "do not believe that this was a random act."

"A Circular Firing Squad"- Mason Crumpacker

Summary:  Mark Corallo, former spokesman for Donald Trump, is rumored to testify to Robert Mueller that Hope Hicks, communications director for President Trump, aided in obstruction of justice related to Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.  Corallo is expected to tell Mueller's team that Hicks told him that Donald Trump Jr's emails regarding efforts to cover up the true purpose of the infamous Trump Tower meeting with Russian nationals "will never get out."  The emails, which Mr. Trump released under pressure, revealed a scramble aboard Air Force One by President Trump, his family and top aides to re-frame the July meeting as a discussion about adoption policy in an attempt to obfuscate the real intention- to find "dirt"on Hilary Clinton.
Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/31/us/politics/trump-russia-hope-hicks-mueller.html

Analysis: Hope Hicks was unsuccessful in guarding Donald Jr's questionable emails since he inexplicably released them to the press himself.  Corallo will argue that Hicks's intent was to hide them from investigators. This is reminiscent to the alleged actions of Richard Nixon's secretary, Rose Mary Woods, who claimed responsibility for accidentally erasing 18 1/2 minutes of the Nixon White House tapes.  Skeptics believe that someone, possibly not Woods, erased the tape on purpose in attempt to hide evidence in the Watergate scandal.

Melania Trump

Myah Hasbany
1st period

This week, following the Stormy Daniels scandal, Melania Trump has done nothing to combat the rumors. This is very out of character for her, as she is usually there to "rationalize his behavior, dismiss his accusers or hit back against naysayers". She defended him after his speech on grabbing women's genitals, during claims of sexual assault and supported him when he tried to get President Obama to share his birth certificate. After the story broke, there was almost no public statements, but she did cancel a trip to Switzerland with the President. After this decision, she went to the President's Florida estate to relax. This flight cost  $16,168 per hour, and in total, taxpayers paid about $64,000.

While I understand that everything she does is being negatively dissected, I found her response unsurprising. Despite all the movements to empower women, Melania will never be the person to support and lead the movement. Her husband has done too much, and her reactions to his bad behavior have become white noise mediocre responses.

Pennsylvania Shooting- Sanaya Gangal

Summary of Article:
Four people, around the age of 20, were shot and killed at a car wash. In southern Pennsylvania, officers found four dead bodies and two injured people-- including the person responsible for the shooting--Timothy Smith. Chelsie Cline, one of the victims, was said to be involved with Smith but eventually broke things off. The police are still investigating the shooters motive, but as of right now, they aren't broadcasting how the shooter and the victims know each other.

Analysis:
This is obviously tragic news to hear about but its also very disturbing that one man would take away the lives of 4 young people. Since nobody knows what his motive was, it's hard to understand what was really going on in Smith's head. Even then, what he did was still very wrong.

Larry Nassar Verdict- Spencer Bolding

The chairman, vice-chairman, and treasurer of USA Gymnastics resigned under pressure from the U.S. Olympic committee on Monday in the latest fallout from the Larry Nassar scandal. Nassar is the former women's team doctor for USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University who has pleaded guilty to abusing young patients. His misconduct, hardly misconduct (more like abuse), has left many patients with trauma beyond repair.More of his victims spoke at his sentencing hearing on Monday. MSYU has stated that at least 12 assaults by Nassau were reported.

This is so heartbreaking that so many of these young girls have gone through sexual assault. Sexual assault should never have to happen and the effects it leaves upon someone are permanent and damaging. Young women and just women in general should not be preyed on by older/creepy men, and it is so disappointing that Nassau abused his position of authority like that.

Jeson Aviles - After Denver Hired Homeless People to Perform Day Labor For the City, More Than 100 Landed Regular Jobs

Over the course of last year, 284 people have participated in a program launched by the Denver government that presented the homeless people of the city with the opportunity to work for it, and be paid. As a result, 110 of the participants gained long-term jobs. 15 of those individuals were hired by the city. On November 1st, 2016, the program, "Denver Day Works" was launched and paid $12.50 per hour to homeless residents in exchange of 3-6 hour shifts of public service work for the city. Even individuals who didn't possess identification were given help to be able to receive the same experience. Financial planning services were offered to them by the program's administrator at no additional cost after the end of their shifts. Over 10,000 hours of work and $109,000 in wages had been paid to participants of the program. They hope to partner with more state organizations so they'll achieve the opportunities to provide increased amounts of work to women, homeless disabled individuals, and minorities.

In times where minorities and those of lesser opportunity fight for equilibrium, it's amazing and so heartwarming to witness people of higher statuses usse their platforms and positions to help others.

Jordan Jimenez - Japan Urges China

Taro Kono, Japan's foreign minister, urged China to maintain pressure on North Korea to curb their nuclear weapons program. He claimed that the two countries both hold a major responsibility in safeguarding the stability and prosperity of Asia, along with the whole world. China and Japan also agreed to resume reciprocal visits by their leaders, showing that they want to strengthen ties. The Chinese foreign minister, Wang Yi, stated that the two countries need to come together and overcome obstacles if they want to make any progress on improving their relations.
I think that it's good that they're taking steps to try to better their relations while also taking North  Korea seriously, instead of just making idiotic insults at them (unlike someone who unfortunately runs our country *cough cough*). It's always important to try to overcome differences with people instead of just pointing fingers and fighting right away.

Trump Expected to Ask for $716 Billion in Military Spending -Sam Blumberg

President Trump is expected to ask for $716 billion for military spending in federal budget—a large increase over recent years. This proposed increase comes after Defense Secretary James Mattis gave a new military strategy that focused on countering, and potentially fighting, China and Russia.

Sadie Schiermeyer

Southern Pennsylvania usually doesn’t spend much time in the spotlight, but attention has been drawn to the local car wash that was victim of a shooting. Three friends, as well as the gunman, were shot around 3 am. The three friends were shot by Timothy Smith, the gunman, whom then proceeded to shoot himself in the head. As of late Monday, the doctors in urgent care predicted Smith as not able to survive. It is uncertain of the shooter's relationship with the other three victims. That being said, no motive has been determined. One girl, a friend of the three, was able to hide in the backseat and was left unharmed. She is now helping with the investigation.

I hate how shootings have increased and the government hasn’t done anything about it. In school shootings alone, there have been 11 shootings since 2018 started. That is less than a month! I’ve covered other articles regarding gun violence and control and my argument only continues to be supported. There is no reason for guns to be held in homes. In gun ranges or hunting grounds it makes sense- but at home? This law was created when it was necessary that we protect ourselves. At the time, we didn’t have a standing army to do it for us. Now, though, we have so many people risking their lives to save us and we still give guns out for people to just do as they please. Gun control needs to be a more serious issue in this country or else many more people are going to die from careless gun crazy people.

Brooke Simpson-Trump: I'll Stress Bipartisanship in 'Important' State of the Union Address

Trump: I’ll Stress Bipartisanship in ‘Important’ State of the Union Address

President Trump’s first State of the Union speech is coming up, and he is expected to suggest bipartisanship on big items like immigration.  He is supposed to talk about a lot, including the “great success” of the stock market and tax cuts, and also push immigration policies such as DACA, and the president is hopeful to unite both the Democrats and the Republicans.  Trump has said that the Republicans can’t get anything done alone and that they need bipartisanship, and that he really wants to get things done. Kellyanne Conway has said that the president is working hard, but the Democrats are trying to stop him, but she promised a positive speech from Trump.  Guests will be parents who lost their daughters to gang violence, veterans who fought ISIS, law enforcement officers fighting opioids, and workers benefiting from tax cuts.  Officials say that there will be some tough talk, like Trump’s promise to bring unfair trade deals to and end, the speech will be light on specifics about that, but more talk about trade and global economic systems and not specifying names of countries.  Most importantly, the speech is supposed to give a tone of command and stability in the face of the political system he fell into.

The article was written by Ali Vitali for NBC News on January 29, 2018.  Because the State of the Union Address hasn’t happened yet, all of the information in the article will be pretty up to date.  The article was written for all Americans because Americans seem to be more vested in the presidency than any other branch of government, and the president can be called the most popular man in America, who most everyone in America is following.  This is a huge speech for the president, so it draws in attention from people even if they aren’t up to date on all politics.  The article is significant because it gives the reader an idea of what Trump will be talking about in his speech.  The bipartisanship Trump would like Americans to achieve can be compared to Washington’s Farewell Address when he warned Americans to not form political parties, but to all work together.  By the time Washington gave his speech, Hamilton and Jefferson had already made the foundations of political parties that have lasted, but now President Trump is trying to bring the two back together.

Mass Shooting in Pennsylvania: Hannah Karim

As of recent, there was a shooting at a car wash in Pennsylvania that led to the death of four innocent citizens. Sadly, before any punishment could be given to the shooter, he ended his life with a bullet and is now facing no consequences for the murder of four people.
This is alarming because our coubtr has gotten to a place where we can’t even wash our cars without feeling in danger. Schools, churches, movie theaters, all places where you are supposed to feel safe, are no longer feeling that way.

Mass Shooting in Philadelphia- James Datcher

https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Reading-4-Shot-Home-471611744.html

Another mass shooting in America which doesn't surprise me left 4 men dead in a Reading, Pennsylvania row home. This is another sad example of why gun laws should be stricter and the lawmakers should care more about the people who are dying because at the end of the day no matter how much money one has, you have to be sure to not lose your humanity.

Shayne Grant: Reality sets in that DACA deal might not get done

After months of political arguments and even a government shutdown, it does not appear as though a deal will be made for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) before March 5th when it is set to be terminated and replaced. Democrats argue for an easier path to legal immigration for these children while Republicans argue for stronger border security, including the infamous border wall. This gap seems to be so big that no agreement can bridge it. Leon Fresco, an immigration attorney, says that no deal will be made. According to Fresco, President Trump's proposal was too conservative for Democrats and too liberal for Conservatives. In other words, a stalemate. The most likely result moving forward would be another temporary extension of the program.

The article from CNN does not appear to be biased as it presents facts and quotes. Congress in in a difficult position right now as both parties seem to be making no compromises. The only way for this too resolve itself is there to be bipartisan bill that meets requirements of both parties. They need to not require every party position but meet a number of them. This is similar to the events leading up to the Compromise of 1877 in which Republican Hayes received votes in return for the withdraw of federal troops from the South. The parties need to start to work together so that deals are made and the DACA children do not have to wait in fear of the unknown.
