Madi Thoele, 4th Period: Photographer Attacked at Trump Rally

Summary: A photographer who covered a Donald Trump Rally in Virginia on Monday claims that he was choked and tackled to the ground by a secret service agent as he was trying to leave the media pen. A video of him leaving because a protest broke out was posted on social media by a witness and it proved this incident true. The photographer said he stepped 18 inches outside of the pen and was immediately grabbed by the neck and choked and slammed to the ground. He has decided to not press any charges. The secret service spokesmen said they are aware this occurred and they're working to get all the necessary details of this event, but they don't have enough information yet.

Analysis: We will never truly know what made the agent tackle the photographer. Did he look like one of the protesters? Did he mean to tackle someone else? We'll never know, unless we uncover more information. This incident reminds me of how Hoover handled the Bonus Army. That police officer fired into the crowd in Washington D.C., killing 2 veterans. Did the cop mean to shoot those 2 veterans? Were they being disorderly? Was the shooting on accident? America will never know.

Ohio School Shooting- Emily Eppig 8th

Yet another school shooting has occurred, this time at Madison Junior-Senior High School in Middletown, Ohio. A 14 year old James Haddock allegedly opened fire in the cafeteria. Luckily only 4 students were injured, all of which are expected to make a full recovery. This portrayal of violence is just another example of how the availability of guns is affecting so many Americans.
This case is so similar to the 142 other school shootings that have occurred in our country since 2013. Specifically, one of the first, Columbine in 1999
Something definitely needs to be done in order to protect American children from this senseless violence. If the government doesn't act soon, our society will become even more desensitized to these crimes.

Adriana Hinojosa, Period 8, KKK Rally? 2016?

There is no doubt that history repeats itself. This has proven true over the years and will always be the case. This weekend, though, old ways were brought back in the worst way possible. There was a KKK rally in Anaheim, CA. That in and of itself is bad enough but at the rally 3 people were stabbed. I'm really nervous for Super Tuesday tomorrow because I'm at a point where I'm really scared for our country. The KKK endorsed Donald Trump and that just goes to show what kind of a candidate he is. It feels that instead of moving forward, we are moving backwards as a country. These hate groups used to be a lot more prominent in society and their making a comeback really doesn't make sense. I hope that the best candidate wins this election and does everything in his power to better this country. Violent acts like what happened in Anaheim are always happening, I know, but for the KKK to even still be in existence and having goals to solely attack innocent people is outdated, absurd, and sad.

Ohio school shooting by Eleanor E-W

A 14 year old student at an Ohio high school opened fire in a cafeteria Monday. Four people were injured--two due to gun wounds and two due to the chaos in the cafeteria. The shooter has been taken into custody and will be tried for attempted murder. Luckily, it seems like everyone will survive.
It's nice to hear that no one died from this school shooting, but frighting and upsetting to know things like this are still going on in our country. The fact that a fourteen year old was able to get a hold of a gun and use it seems completely ridiculous. Something needs to be done, so things like this don't continue to happen.

Google car has its first crash-Nicholas Watson, 9th

Summary:
Google's self driving car had its first crash when it changed lanes and drove itself into oncoming traffic, and into an oncoming bus. At the time of the crash Google's car was in autonomous mode and was traveling at a speed of 2 mph. The bus was driving at 15 mph. and thankfully no injuries were reported, only very minor damage to the Google car. In a statement Google says that the crash was there fault and that if the car hadn't moved in the other lane then the incident wouldn't have occurred.

Analysis:
Like any other new invention and innovative technology, there is bound in determined to be some sort of accident, but that's what makes these new ideas great. Without failure and slip ups like we see here then there would be no incentive to get better and to make the products as good as they can be. Although, along with failures, I do believe there has to be some limit and assurance that the product will do what its supposed to do, with the lack if possible risk. So with these conclusions, like many other new inventions, I am intrigued to see what Google will do with this new product and the many ways it will help and benefit society.  This can be related to other inventions that had slip ups but ended up doing good.

4 students injured in Ohio school shooting

We've all have been awaire of  mass shootings in schools and how many lives and family's have been affected. Pardon me if  I  bring upon any sadness or grief  upon you as I inform you about four students injured in a Ohio school shooting. CNN  state that, "The shooting happened in Madison-Senior-Junior High School in Middletown,Ohio. The sheriff  identified the suspected gunman as James Austin Hancock, 14. He was taken into custody outside of the school. and faces  charges as a juvenile of attempted murder, felonious assault, including panic, and making terrorist treats..."  Personally, I believe that their are so many unanswered questions as to why a child-teen would do such an awful thing . A question that I keep wondering is how did James a fourteen year old boy  able to have a gun in his possession? Even if  he took from home his parents should've placed the gun somewhere safe and out of reach. Its even more devastating just thinking about how the parents of the injured and non-injured students feel so much fear and hurt.

Rodeos or RodeNOs - Bethany Wolfe 3rd pd

summary:
Supporting and Promoting Ethics for the Animal Kingdom Tuscon (SPEAK Tuscon), an animal rights group, led a rally on the last day of the Tuscon Rodeo. By picketing, this group hopes to gain awareness for the injustice and cruelty within rodeos. However, general managers claim that they follow specific livestock care protocol and have a vet on-site.
analysis:
In 1866, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was established for the care of livestock, yet animal cruelty still exists and is popular in our Ameican "traditions" such as rodeos. Hopefully, the SPEAK Tuscon's cause gains more awareness and can either work to edit current livestock laws or end the event.

Jillian Linnear P.8 | Ex-Saints player Will Smith shot

A couple of nights ago former Saints player, Will Smith and his wife, Racquel Smith were shot. Prior to the shooting the couple were out in New Orleans celebrating and were then seen at dinner with former another former Saints player and a sports agent. The manager of the restaurant they were at said they had a fine time and left at eleven fifteen, a little bit before the restaurant closed. They were seen leaving the restaurant following their friends to another location when at a five way intersection they were hit in the back of their car by a hummer, causing them to hit their friends in front of them. Smith and the driver exchanged some choice words before the other driver pulled out a gun and proceeded to shoot Smith several times and his wife once in the leg. A woman staying in a nearby hotel heard the commotion and came out to see the Mrs. Smith shot in the leg, reports say they both prayed together before the ambulance got there. Mrs. Smith survived the shooting but her husband died at the scene, leaving behind three children. This article truly is significant to the football community especially, the Saint's community because a former teammate was lost as well as a friend. This article is relevant to not only the football community but to everyone because it shows us how quickly a life can be lost over an incident that could've been solved in a civilized manner.

Tristan Spohn 3rd Period

Recently, a superfluous number of people have been breaking into various history museums all around the world during the nighttime. I'm talking thousands upon thousands. It appears the cause of this has been rooted in the quite popular "Night at the Museum" franchise, as many people have mistaken the film as a documentary rather than a work of fiction. In a worldwide news conference Ben Stiller officially announced the "Night at the Museum" as being a work of fiction in hopes of dissuading and stopping all of the break-ins. However, conspiracy theorists have claimed that the ancient beings inside museums that come to life only at night have brainwashed Stiller into lying about the existence of this phenomenon in effort to preserve their way of life.

Lincoln Anthony (8th Period)-"Migrants face tear gas, razor wire"

The refugee crisis from the Middle East worsens as the migrants in Macedonia face razor wire and tear gas as they try to escape to Greece. These attacks towards the migrants by the police force have caused a public outcry for the governments of these countries to help these desperate people seeking asylum.

This is a delicate subject. I believe it is the moral duty of these governments to assimilate these people into their society, but I can understand the fear of these people because of recent terrorist attacks and the New Year thing in Cologne, but I believe that ultimately if we are to eventually find some kind of understanding or agreement of peace, we must shun all nativist thinking. It's really outdated.

Photographer: Secret Service agent choked me at a Trump rally- Lia Kerkman 6th

A photographer covering a Trump rally claimed that he was chocked and slammed to the ground buy a secret service agent. A video of him trying to leave the event was posted on social media and the showed the whole ordeal. He said he stepped 18 inches outside of the pen and was almost immidiately grabbed by the neck and chocked, however he will not be pressing any charges. The secret service spokesmen is saying that they are looking into getting the exact details and circumstances of the situation.
Wow! I'm sure the intentions of the secret service man were not to chock the man as drastically as he did. I imagine it was one of those situations where it was an instinct kicking in, in the spur of the moment... although maybe it wasn't. It seems very and unclear and just goes to show that being a photographer can come with risks.

Victoria Rhodes 5th- Possible Glass Fragment Cause Food Recall

a company decided to recall their food products that have the potential to include glass fragments in them. the company claims that the possible glass fragments could be come from the suppliers that supplied them with raw cashews. most of the food products that could have been infected are mostly peppers, cashews and other nuts distributed by the company. all products have been recalled and stores have stopped carrying their products for now until further investigation.

in my opinion the company did the right thing by being honest instead of trying to hide the reality that their products could have been contaminated. this has the potential to ruin the company's name but at least they were better safe then sorry. there is no reported sicknesses yet but it's better to be cautious and take all the necessary precautions. this is similar to the bluebell scandal that took everyone by surprise.

Lincoln Anthony (8th Period)-"Donald Trump in Texas"

Super Tuesday is just around the corner, and it will give us some serious insight as to who might be the final candidates for president. Though, in Texas, Senator Ted Cruz has raised much more money than Republican candidate Donald Trump, many economists speculate that this might not show what is going to happen when Super Tuesday actually rolls in, because many of Donald Trump's supporters do not think that he needs any funds.

As much as I dislike it, I think that these guys are onto something. Donald Trump has dominated the other primaries, winning three of the four primaries that have happened thus far. I really have some conflicting feelings about Donald Trump's possible and as it is looking more recently, probable election. On one hand I feel that he is so radical in his beliefs that nobody would actually follow him, even in the Republican Senate. On the other hand, however, Donald Trump has shown an astounding ability to make people follow and support him no matter how crazy his ideas are, and he could just buy the senate with his fortunes, plunging our country into another Gilded Age.

Layla Maynard: Yet Another School Shooting

Summary: Fourteen year old James Austin Hancock is being held in custody under the accusation that he has injured four fellow students at Madison Junior-Senior High School in Middletown, Ohio. It is believed that Monday around lunch, Hancock opened fire in the schools cafeteria, shooting two students and otherwise injuring the other two. Thankfully, none of these injuries are fatal and all are expected to live. Hancock will face all charges, attempted murderer, felonious assault, inducing panic, and making terroristic threats, as a juvenile. Authorities have not yet revealed whether or not the victims were picked at random or specifically targeted. Analysis: Although it's incredibly lucky that none of the injuries are life threatening, it's still astonishing that somehow an eighth grader got his hands on a gun and attempted to take the lives of his peers. Though I'm unaware of the gun control laws in place in Ohio, I know that as of January 1, 2016, it became legal to carry a concealed weapon in the state of Texas. I know that this law doesn't apply to teenagers; one must have the appropriate license and what not, but it makes things like this so much easier for people with harmful intentions. Pancreatic cancer breakthrough Paul Radke (5th)

summary- New findings from the University of Glasgow offer a key that will help doctors and pharmaceutical industry more effectively target the weekends of what has been, up till now, one of the most treatment-resistant and lethal cancers. According to the american cancer society 2015 cancer facts and figures report, nearly 1.66 million Americans were expected to be diagnosed with cancer in 2015, while more than 589,000 cancer sufferers were expected to die of the disease

Analysis- This breakthrough is a big one because it gets us one step closer to finding a cure for many other types of cancers. Cancer has been a problem in this world for a long time and for us to be able to stop one type of cancer is a gateway to figuring out how to cure all different sorts of cancers. Science has come a long way and it has much in store for us.

Gunman wounds 4 in Ohio school lunch room before K-9 unit catches him-Paisley Norburg

Gunman wounds 4 in Ohio school lunch room before K-9 unit catches him

This morning, a teenage gunman ran into the lunch room of an Ohio school with ope fire. He had wounded four students before the local K-9 unit caught the man. The school that this occurred at was Madison Junior/Senior High School in the county of Butler. The suspect is actually 14 years-old and is a student in Butler. The teenager faces charges such as terrorist threats and attempted murder. The investigation of whether the teenager was firing at certain students or just at random is still being investigated. What they do know right now is that the 14 year-old shot with a .380 caliber handgun, but after the shooting he got rid of it and ran into a field, before he was caught by the K-9 unit. Two of the students were hurt by gunshots and two by shrapnel. Three of them are 14 and the other is fifteen. The students are in stable condition and were taken to the hospital right away.

This story is extremely scary not only because of what happened, but also because this could easily happen any day. We need to maintain and strengthen our security system and be more aware to these problems. By just staying aware and open we can put a quick stop to problems like these!

Kayleigh Smerud pd.1

Summary: Republicans in the House of Representatives are trying to pass are bill that would delay a government shutdown for another year due to budget problems but Republicans in the Senate keep rejecting the deals. If a deal doesn't pass soon, the government will go into a partial shutdown starting at 12:01 AM Tuesday morning. This debate has been a long-tme coming, but the big issue started when Republicans started trying to defund Obamacare; since they have the majority in the Senate, it has been hard to pass laws that would prevent such actions. House leaders keep saying that they need to cut parts of the health care plan, which goes into effect tomorrow, as a price for keeping the government open. If the government does shutdown, thousands of federal workers will be expected to work without pay and many offices will be temporarily closed.

Analysis: I don't understand what a government shutdown really means, but I know that it will be bad for a lot of people, especially those who work for the government, since they will be expected to continue to work without pay. I think that the Republicans and the Democrats need to come together and think about what will be best for the American public. A national survey published today reveals that over 80% of Americans have been unhappy about the way the government has been functioning recently. The results of this survey come as no surprise considering how Senators and Representatives have been handling business lately. I hope that Congress can come together in the final hours of tonight and prevent a government shutdown.

Nicholas Godfrey Period 8: Trump blames comment on faulty earpiece

Summary: Donald Trump was recently asked in an interview about his stance on these White Supremacist groups that are around right now and Trump replied that he would need to do more research before he makes a statement. Trump is now saying that he had a faulty earpiece and couldn't understand the question. "I don't care how bad the earpiece is, Ku Klux Klan comes through pretty clearly," said Marco Rubio when talking about Trump's comment. Donald Trump says that he insulted the reporter and the network before the interview, so in response they gave him a bad earpiece. Also, when asked to present his tax returns, he said that he couldn't because he was about to be audited. There isn't an audit that prevents you from showing your tax returns.

Analysis: Seriously I don't understand how people are still voting for this child. When asked about the KKK, he says that he needs to do more research! Either he made that up because he doesn't want to lose voters, or he just didn't have an education in school because the name KKK was definitely taught to us and we DEFINITELY know that the KKK is not a good thing. Not at all. Racist people are just something that we can't escape, but the KKK is a complete other level. And the tax returns! What kind of shady things is he hiding? To me, this instance seems like it relates to the policy that Aaron Burr took when running for office which was: talk less, smile more. He basically would just try to appeal to people but never take any particular stance on anything when running. Trump definitely takes stances on everything, but I am synthesizing this one event to the policy of Aaron Burr.

Kiyanna Elliott Scott Kelly from space: Earth's atmosphere 'looks very, very fragile'

Summary: The Earth's atmosphere "looks very, very fragile" and "like something that we need to take care of." according to astronaut Scott Kelly. Since he inside the International Space Station, CNN's Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta asked him to describe the earth as if it were a human.

Analysis: I wish we would have taken into account how our environment would be affected by what we do. It could have potential prevented some of the problems we have today such as water shortages and increasing desertification or even climate change. I do however remember Theodore Roosevelt being an advocate for conservation as he created national parks. We have to do like Gupta when he asked Kelly to think of the earth as a human. We have to think about how we can take care of it because if no one does, then it will start to break down beyond what we can repair.

"Climate Change Is Real" // Uriel Cruz, Period 6

Last night was certainly a night to remember. It marked the end of the Leonardo DiCaprio never winning an Oscar meme and Rock's return to the spotlight. What truly stood out to me, and by that I mean what seemed easy to write about, was DiCaprio's winning speech. If you've seen The Revanant, or at least the trailer, you'd know there's a bunch of snow everywhere. DiCaprio mentions in his speech that the shooting location had to be moved just to get some snow in the shot and then talks about how climate change and global warming are threats to our entire species.

DiCaprio reminded me of what Teddy Roosevelt wanted to do with conversing wild life and how that led the way to national parks. His speech could bring the conservationalist movement back into mainstream media and help save the planet and our species.

Largest Ever US-South Korea Militairy Drill by Caroline North 9th period

The joint US-Korean exercises symbolize the largest military drills to ever take place on the Korean Peninsula, serving as a warning to Pyongyang.  They commence March 7 and involve 15,000 U.S. troops, a combat aviation brigade, marine brigade, nuclear powered submarine, and aerial tankers to refuel fighter craft.  South Korea plans to double its normal deployment by providing around 290,000 personnel including special forces for the exercises.  These exercises ultimately hold the purpose to concoct a strong offense against North Korea, and to reassure the South Korean public of their security.

This event pertains to the United States’ foreign policy.  Throughout different periods in U.S. history, our nation maintains policies of isolationism for example prior to WWII, or exhibits major involvement in foreign affairs for example the U.S.’s global role in the 2nd half of the 20th century.  The United States’ role in helping South Korea today against North Korea can be compared to the U.S. intervening in the Korean War against Communist North Korea and the Soviets, as well as the U.S.’s involvement in the Vietnam War.

When Donald Trump Doesn't "Speak His Mind" - Matthew Taylor

Donald Trump was recently asked why he hasn't spoken against KKK support for his campaign. He's most famously dodged these kinds of questions, and this is the most recent example. The question is asked, and his response goes somewhere along the lines of,

"Sorry, couldn't hear you, my earpiece isn't working right."

Donald Trump, ladies and gentlemen. Pathological liar, racist, and rotten tomato. This is historical, because Donny T. is starting to look a lot like some famous dictators of the 20th century. He quoted Benito Mussolini, wants to build a wall, etc. Did I mention he's the most likely Presidential candidate to be elected, according to statistics?

Victoria Garza "For Hotels, Bedbugs Are Bad Enough, And Social Media Adds To Irritation"

Recently, bedbugs have become a source of negative feedback for hotels. With social media being such a big part of our every day routine, one negative review could ruin the reputation of a hotel. Bedbugs have become a huge complaint among travelers, and potential prevents visitors from staying at hotels with reported bedbugs. Hotels have had to take matters into their own hands and prevent or treat the bedbugs if spotted in hotels.
This relates to US history because of the huge impact advertising can have on companies. In these media focused days, reviews act as advertisements for businesses. I know a majority of people wouldn't be satisfied sleeping with bedbugs, myself included, so I can understand why these reviews are creating a problem for hotels. The only real solution is to keep the bedbugs away in order to keep the guests satisfied with their stay.

Super Tuesday - Kate Fehan 8th Period

The term "Super Tuesday" was first used in 1980, when three Southern States all held their primaries on the same day. In 1988, the modern Super Tuesday was formed when a dozen states banded together to try and nominate someone more moderate in the Democratic party. It ended up splitting the nominations and backfiring completely. The outcomes of Super Tuesday have been pretty accurate when predicting presidential nominations in the past. The first primary was started in Oregon in 1910 and primaries were used nationally in 1968. This year, Trump and Clinton are leading so far. Super Tuesday is March 1st this year. Sanders could pull ahead, but it's unlikely. It's even more unlikely that anyone will pull ahead of Trump who is wildly popular this year for some reason.

Erin McElhone 3rd period: Argentina Reaches Settlement With Hedge Funds, Ending 15-Year Dispute

Argentina has reached an agreement with some of its creditors that should help end a long and acrimonious dispute that has blocked the country from the international bond markets. The deal, which must be approved by Argentina's Congress, calls for the government to pay $4.653 billion to four of the holdout U.S. hedge funds. That is about 75 percent of what they claimed they were owed. Argentina defaulted in 2001 and has been trying to restructure billions of dollars in debt, but a group of hedge funds, led by Paul Singer's Elliott Management, refused to go along and sued that country's government in U.S. federal court. The court battle had lapsed into a bitter political fight, with former Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner labeling the holdouts "vulture funds." Meanwhile, Argentina was essentially blocked from borrowing any more money in the bond market. But everything changed after the November election of President Mauricio Macri, who vowed to end the dispute during his campaign. The settlement between Elliott Management and Argentina was announced this morning by Daniel A. Pollack, the special master appointed by the court to oversee settlement talks. The deal does not completely settle Argentina's debt woes, since some smaller bondholders continue to resist restructuring, Ferro says. But they lack Elliott's resources and constitute a smaller threat to the government.

Argentina agreed to pay $4.65 billion to four hedge funds on Monday in a deal that could put an end to a more than a decade of mudslinging and legal attacks. I am glad that their government has figured out a way for this economic problem/conflict to come to an end.

36 people killed in mine collapse in Russia.(Alejandra Hernandez 6th period)

Summary:In Russia there was a mine collapse. There was a total of three explosions, the first two were caused by a methane leak that killed four miners and trapped twenty-six. The third explosion caused the mine to collapse, killing other miners.

Analysis: It says in the article that Data reported high temperatures, and very little oxygen. I think this is an accident that could have been prevented. Mining is a dangerous job, there can't be careless mistakes like these. The job is already dangerous enough and sometimes you can't prevent explosions. This reminds me of the Chile mining accident where this could've been prevented if they had been up to date with the safety rules.

Taytum Buford(Period 6)-DISD is Going to Bump Pay

Summary: Left behind by the district’s new pay system, some of Dallas ISD’s best teachers are poised to receive a $1,000 stipend at the start of the next school year, thanks to a proposal that is expected to be approved by trustees during their regular board meeting Thursday. While nearly 71 percent of returning teachers received a raise under DISD’s new evaluation system – the Teacher Excellence Initiative (TEI) – the district found 148 high-performing teachers were ineligible for raises under the new plan because they made more than the given salary range for their performance level. An additional 20 high-performing teachers received less than a $1,000 bump. The new recommendation will award qualifying teachers a one-time retention stipend up to $1,000, if they’ve accepted a contract for the 2016-17 school year and are in a teaching position as of Sept. 15. DISD superintendent Michael Hinojosa attempted to redress the problem in November, proposing a similar one-time stipend.  But DISD general counsel Jack Elrod told the board that awarding such payment was prohibited by the state constitution, considered a gift of public funds since teachers wouldn’t be tasked with additional duties. The current proposal – essentially a signing bonus – sidesteps such concerns. “We don’t want our best teachers mad, whether they go or not,” Hinojosa said when he met with The Dallas Morning News editorial board in January. The average raise for DISD teachers under the new system was $2,700. Other notable items on the board’s consent agenda deal with the district’s former and future construction plans. District administration is recommending the board accept $150,000 from the non-profit Jubilee Park and Community Center for six lots on Gurley and Philip Avenues, northwest of O.M. Roberts Elementary School, between I-30 and Fair Park.
Analysis: I think that this is amazing. I know so many teachers at Booker T. that definitely deserve this bump. This can relate back to all the acts passed during the New Deal that had to do with raising pays and reducing taxes. I really hope that this gets passed so a lot of amazing teachers will finally get what they deserve.

YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT HOLLYWOOD IS RACIST- Emily Miller

http://www.cnn.com/2016/02/28/entertainment/chris-rock-oscars-so-white-feat/index.html

The Academy Awards always give us something to talk about, but this year's show was especially headline-worthy for many reasons. Besides the death of the infamous meme as Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar (and I'm still in shock that he won for that role, I mean the role of Jordan Belfort was more dynamic and 'lead actor-friendly' than Hugh Glass, but that's a whole other point), Chris Rock dropped a bomb on the entire Hollywood film industry. If you didn't get a chance to see the show, go watch the opening monologue at least. In the first 5 minutes, Rock gave a clear verdict regarding the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, highlighting the fact that black actors don't get the same opportunities that white actors do. In his words, "You're damn right Hollywood is racist, but not the racist that you've grown accustomed to". Some of Hollywood's most prominent casting directors don't speak against people of color, but they don't cast them either. Rock's delivery of his opinion on the issue was blunt, passionate, and biting, all while being perfectly comical.

His message of the diversity issue continued throughout the entire show as a running gag, and some even thought it excessive. They claim that he went too far, and that the entire tone of the show was made uncomfortable by race jokes. But I think that was the point. I thought his satirical, tricky message achieved exactly its purpose: to make people laugh, but more importantly, to make them think. His head-on, no-filter approach was an essential device to the conveyance of the message, and I thought it was brilliant. It was the most effective way to bring up the controversy while also keeping the audience in good spirits, and furthermore, to headline in post-Oscars discussion. People who say that Chris Rock's show-long discussion of Hollywood racism was "unnecessary" are oblivious to the fact: once #OscarsSoWhite struck the internet, there was no hope of avoiding its discussion during the 88th Academy Awards.

KuKluxKlan Rally Ends in Violence

On February 28th a KuKluxKlan rally was held in Anaheim, California where many Klan members met to protest against recent "Black" matters. Members held up signs such as 'White Lives Do Matter' accompanied by a confederate flag. The violence began when KKK members arrived in a black SUV at a local park for the rally and they were attacked by counter-protesters. Thirteen people were arrested including a Klansman who stabbed one of the counter protesters with a flag pole.

There were six KKK members that showed up and they were attacked by an even larger number of counter protesters. They proceeded to kick and punch KKK members with wooden planks. However not every counter protester was up for a fight. "A lot of us were trying to break it up," says witness Dion Reuters. One witness stated that he helped pull one of the KKK members out of the brawl and then after asked the Klansman how he felt about being saved by a Jew. Ironic?
In addition to the amount of karma that came back on the KKK in this situation that most important thing to take note of is synthesis. The KKK was very popular in Anaheim and has a long history in that region being that one of the KKK members was elected to the city council in 1920's. The synthesis is that America has come a long way however if we look at factors such as racial brutality, ignorant groups such as the KKK it makes you wonder how much have we socially progressed.

Iranian Moderates Make Big Gains In Parliamentary Elections- Tori Gilchrist, 1st period

Iranian parliamentary elections under way, and reformists are speaking up. However, most reformist candidates were not allowed to run in the election. They've been virtually shut out of Iranian politics since 2004 but now have "swept the seats in Iran's capital." Moderates have taken around 20 seats in an 88-member assembly in charge of choosing Iran's supreme leader. There's confusion as to what exactly a moderate is, though. According to this reporter, a politician who is identified as Moderate can open minded when it comes to economic forms but still very socially conservative, or vice versa. What does this mean for Iran's future?

The confusion of what exactly constitutes a Moderate is similar to the confusion surrounding the Republican party. For example, Donald Trump is leading the Republican polls, but is rejected by nearly all other Republican candidates. Immigration policies, within one party, range from "let them stay, just don't let them vote" to "let's immediately deport all eleven million of them." Issues of women's rights also span from one extreme to the other, from "allow women to make their own choices about their own bodies" to "shut down Planned Parenthood because they offer safe abortions and women shouldn't be allowed to have those." Overall, political parties are a mess. Should we really have them?

4 Injured in Colorado School Shooting by Jack Higgins period 6

Under an hour ago, Madison Junior/Senior High School in Butler, Colorado went into lockdown after an unnamed suspect opened fire at the school. 2 students were shot and 2 were injured from shrapnel, but luckily nobody was killed and nobody's injuries have been considered life-threatening. There is not too much information to divulge at the time, as this happened extremely recently and information is just being released as it becomes available. This is a messed up situation where school shootings in the country are happening every week - sometimes several times a week - and nobody seems to bat an eye. Is it just becoming the norm for kids our age to think shooting up schools and public places is the appropriate way to gain attention? Is it possible that something like this may happen in the future at Booker T? (Probably not, there aren't very many violent/criminally insane kids at our school, so we should be fine) but regardless of whether or not this may come to our school and directly affect us, this needs to be addressed and we need to put an end to it.

Analysis: While we felt the era of the KKK have been long over, they are not. We might thing racism is over it is still here and relevant for example the "Black Lives Matter" campaign. There are many conflicts that have arose recently within this day an age that show many are stuck in the past and our ancestors ways.

3 Men Killed Execution Style - Olivia Browne Period 6

An investigation is underway after three young men were found shot to death "execution-style" in an abandoned home in Indiana, authorities said. Their bodies were discovered Wednesday in a home in Fort Wayne, Rusty York, the city's public safety director, told a local news station. All three deaths were classified as homicides, the Allen County Coroner's Office said. It did not specify whether they were shot once or multiple times. "These young people were just starting out in their life," Fort Wayne Police Chief Garry Hamilton told a local news station.

Cassidy Jones Reports "Lord, Have Mercy"

A pastor was shot dead by his brother at an Ohio church on Sunday, police said. Daniel Schooler, 68, is accused of killing his older brother, William Schooler, 70, at St. Peters Missionary Baptist Church in Dayton, Ohio. The pastor was the only intended target in the shooting says Sgt. Richard Blommel. in a 911 recording a woman said that church service was in action during the shooting; everybody began to run. The shooting took place while the choir was singing, it wasn't two minutes until the congregation heard shots.

This is similar to the bombing in Birmingham,Alabama. During Sunday school, two white male individuals,as an act of white supremacist terrorism, launched at least 15 sticks of dynamite inside of the church. In this event, four young girls were killed.

Tropical Cyclone Winston was the most powerful storm ever recorded in the southern hemisphere. It made landfall in the Pacific island country of Fiji on Saturday. Winston killed at least 10 people when it roared through. Trees are down. Power is out. All of Fiji schools are close this week. A state of emergency will be in effect for a month.  Now, the challenge is prioritizing clean up efforts. Officials are most concerned about some of Fiji`s smaller villages. They didn`t have the infrastructure to withstand the storm`s 184-mile-per-hour winds.  Winston was the equivalent of a category 5 hurricane.

$250 Million to Cancer Research- Ava Cosentino

Summary: Billionaire Sean Parker announces that he is giving $250 million in order to speed up cancer research. The funds will be focused toward developing research on how the body's immune system fights the cancer cells. He believes that "Any breakthrough made at one center is immediately available to another center without any kind of IP (intellectual property) entanglements or bureaucracy".

Analysis: I believe that this large grant of money may be exactly what cancer research has been needing. Several scientists and researches have come so close to finding answers and cures, however, they often times seem to fall just short of the goal; to put an end to cancer altogether. With this, it may be possible to end the disease that has been killing and affecting so many people for decades and decades.

KKK Attack by Matthew Homsher 9th

Summary: Three people were stabbed at a KKK rally in Anaheim, California, where Klansmen were supposed to consult on the idea of “white lives matter too”. Instead, what resulted was a confrontation between police, KKK members, and counter-KKK protesters.  The police showed up as the counter protesters and KKK clashed, having received a call from a concerned organizer of the counter-protest.  The counter protesters attacked first, confronting the KKK members as soon as they got out of their cars.  Thirteen people were arrested after the fight: six Klansmen and seven counter protesters. Several people were badly injured, including one Klansman stabbed with an American flag. Another Klansman was saved from an attack by an armed counter protester. The officer Brian Levin, who saved him, said, “How do you feel that a Jewish guy just saved your life?” to which the white supremacist supposedly responded “Thank you.”

Synopsis: This violence is crazy, but not unprecedented considering the history of the KKK. What is surprising is that the KKK was attacked by the counter protesters and not the other way around. It seems odd, to say the least. The police officers were certainly put in a tough spot by having to defend these white supremacists from radical avenging counter protesters. In the end, the police made several justified arrests and ended the violence. Also, if the Brian Levin story is true, then maybe there is hope for changing the white supremacist mindset.

Jillian Linnear P.8 | Teenage boy killed in a school science experiment

Two students from Thousand Oaks High School were injured from a science experiment, one of which died at the hospital later that same night. The students were in an elementary school parking lot trying to perfect a home-made rocket for their AP science class when their device didn't go off. As Bernard Moon, the 18-year-old who passed away, went to check the experiment it went off and the two of them were both horribly injured. They were both rushed to the hospital, where Bernard Moon died and his partner was left in critical condition. Their community held a memorial for Bernard the next day at a nearby church. Bernard placed in several of science competitions and his friends say that they are happy that he at least died doing what he loved. California Ku Klux Klan rally ends with stabbings and arrests Jasmine Rodriguez Period 4

This article talks about a fight that happened at a KKK rally in California. Protestors to the group showed up to the rally with numerous anti-racism posters. Fights occurred between Klan members and extreme protestors who were highly against racism and wanted to end the efforts of the KKK. Some witnesses believe that the fight was unnecessary as it brought a lot of commotion, and the KKK members are protected by free speech.

The issue of the KKK dates all the way back to the hatred towards blacks preceding and during the Civil War. Members of the KKK would be involved in lynching of blacks. The group reappeared with the anti-immigration movements of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era where the United States was trying to reserve jobs for natives in the industrializing world. They were extreme nativists and embodied the policies of the Immigration Quota. The issue of free speech that arose at the rally is much like the issue in the Schenck v. United States case that questioned the right of free speech if it seemed to present a "clear and present danger"(as did people who were in favor of U.S. involvement in WWI.

Transgender Restroom Bill, Darby McMahon Pd#9

A high school senior named Thomas Lewis is considering attending the University of Minnesota. However, while other teens are looking forward to prom and graduation, Lewis has been taking time off of school to appeal to the state legislature and government officials. He is speaking out against a bill that could affect him as a transgender. Lewis was born a girl but now identifies as a man with support from his whole community. He is hoping to work with gov officials to reject a proposed bill that would restrict the use of school restrooms and locker rooms, meaning that transgender people would be forced to use the bathroom of the gender they were born with, not which they identify with. A legislation passed in South Dakota senate last week presents a new idea of creating a unisex or single person bathroom. This new legislation gives people like Thomas Lewis hope for a more accepting government on issues such as this.
Source:transgenderrestroombill, CNN
This new bill by South Dakota is a great step in the right direction. The fact that some people are so quick to make decisions that are not in the best interest for transgender people makes this new bill that much more celebrated. It makes me happy to see that People like Thomas are being represented finally. This article written by Bill Kirkos, CNN, was very informative and gave a good description of the bill mentioned as well as Thomas Lewis's personal testimony. The treatment of people that are different than the majority has been seen all throughout history. It is very important for poeple to see the treatment of the transgender community and to realize the effects that the laws we pass have on them.

"The Other Side of the Glass" - Kera Mickus

Hatnim Lee, daughter to two owners of a D.C- area liquor store, recently released a photo gallery of customer portraits. In the 8 photos available on CNN, each is snapped from behind a thick acrylic safety glass, where transaction take place between The Lees and the customer. Lee describes each "transaction" as a having more than a monetary value, but an emotional, or mental transaction. Hatnim describes there being "a human connection" and that "it almost makes you more curious in a way". "It's almost like if you have a barrier up, it makes you almost want it more, want to know them more. ... I ask (customers) for something so much more than their money. I ask them to be vulnerable for me or to share a piece of them with me. If you're taking a person's portrait, it's asking a lot of somebody."
In a transaction than usually only involves money and product, it's really interesting to hear a perspective that buying liquor/ other items sold at the store are not only about buying and selling, but about the human element involved. It's not always about the actual purchase, but the exchange of ideas, lifestyle, accents, emotion, knowledge, and anything that makes us who we are. The cashier or employee is always assumed to be just a worker, or paid to be there; however, in Hatnim's collection, the
I synthesize this to the Colombian Exchange, where not only were there people intermingling, but cultural influence, objects and foods, and such. The people were distanced, like the Plexiglass in Lee's store, by a language, culture, and skin tone - ie. forced to view each other as a stranger behind a dividing factor.

A Curious Amphibian Found in Slovenia by Brenna Hale(6th Period)

The olm, a blind salamander, is believed to live for up to 100 years and only reproduces once or twice every decade. A female in the Postojna Cave Park, visited by million of visitors a year, has laid 50 to 60 eggs and some are now showing signs of movement. The scientists keep the cave at 9 degrees Celsius so as to prolong the growth of the olms, and provide themselves with a chance to study and observe the the strange creature in the same cave it has lived in for millions of years. According to Dusan Jelic of the Zoological Society of London there is not a lot of data pertaining to this group of animals so this experiment is very significant.
Jonathan Webb, a Science reporter at BBC News, wrote this article to inform the public about an interesting species which has not been studied as much as it should. This article and the study of a strange creature relates to the side shows/freak shows which emerged in the late 19th century as a form of entertainment. These shows attracted many viewers just as the olms are doing in their cave. Another topic this relates to his Teddy Roosevelt's conservation efforts in the early 20th century, because these Slovenian scientists are set on keeping the olms eggs alive in their growth to further study and the species population.

Clinton wins South Carolina- Tea Devereaux

Last week, Hillary Clinton won the South Carolina Primary. Clinton beat Bernie Sanders by more than 70% of the vote. Clinton received great support from black voters. It is said that winning this Primary validated Clintons running. This win is said to extend her lead over Sanders and provide just enough delegates to "clinch the Democratic nomination."

I personally believe that this win for Clinton helped her in get closer to "clinch[ing]" the nomination. However I also believe that as they go to the primaries in states with younger people, Sanders will begin to win, and make a comeback. Eight years ago, Barack Obama and Clinton were running against one another. However, Obama won. Many people believe that Obama won because of his race and the fact that the United States had never had an African American President. Similar to today, some believed that Clinton is winning because she is a women and the US has yet to have a female President. Do you believe that this is true? If Clinton is to win the nomination, do you believe that she will win the election? Although Sanders is favored in the eyes of younger people, do you believe that is enough for him to come back and win it?

(Angelique Flores 9th) Chris Rock gets into racism debate during Oscar monologue

Summary: During the 2016 Academy Awards Chris Rock walked out after the opening of the awards and said  “I counted at least 15 black people on that montage. I’m here at the Academy Awards, otherwise known as the White People’s Choice awards. If they nominated hosts, I wouldn’t even get this job.”  Chris being the guy he is didn't just stop there after looking around the room and seeing some of the audiences shock at his comment he then said pointing out that African-Americans didn't protest similar “white-outs” in the ‘60s, because they were “too busy being raped and lynched to care about who won best cinematographer.” some laughed not really catching onto the jokes point. If it wasn't for Chris kind of biting his tongue he probably would've gone even further and just called all of Hollywood racists considering some of the points he made and others have made during many award shows.

Analysis: In a way I applaud Chris Rock for speaking his mind and making his point clearly on World Wide Television. What is the right time to say what he wanted to say? Maybe not maybe it was and he may be thrown into the fire of many after his comments but he knew what he was doing and meant what he said. In conclusion i don't see a problem with it.

Teen murders teacher- faces consequences. By: Emma Wall

http://www.cnn.com/2016/02/26/us/massachusetts-teacher-killing-sentence/index.html

The article above discusses the teen's punishment for killing, raping and robbing his math teacher.  It says that he has at least 40 years in jail for rape and robbery, but he will get a parole after 25 years due to the fact that he is a juvenile.  The teen is only 14 years old.  He killed the teacher after school in the bathroom with a box cutter and she was later found in the woods near the school.

This is sickening.  I can't even believe that a fourteen year old could think of and commit a crime of the sorts.  I am glad that they are enforcing what they are, but if someone has murdered, raped and robbed someone, they should suffer extreme consequences.  I am interested to see how the parole results in 25 years.

Reagan Rees Period 5

The race is close between Clinton and Sanders in this marathon to the white house. Clinton has won three of four small state contests just before the big super tuesday vote. This running is very close, and each candidate has their own group of supporters.

Contrary to past elections, the current campaign of all the candidates is quite close. Super tuesday and further primaries will help to see who will be ahead in the runnings, but it's still quite the close race as of now.

Solar rates debate in nevada By: Luis Ceja

After state and federal incentives were put into law in the state of Nevada. Solar panels were being installed at record amounts. Now though there is debating over the pricing of the solar energy and a specific thing called "net metering". This would mean that homeowners who had leftover energy from there solar panel would get payed to put it back into the electrical grid. Being subsidized for the energy they produce. Since they are also producing there own solar power energy prices are dropping. This of course worries companies cause it digs into their profit. There is also a liability to be looked at. They are concerned about people who might pay what there supposed to. So now new set's of regulations are being debated. It has become quiet contested though between energy companies there and consumers. So hopefully they can come to a reasonable resolve and address the issue. Especially on something I don't think should be so polarizing. Of course the sad thing is like many issues it has become polarizing and people.

Trump Supports KKK? Alexis Williams

Politician Donald Trump found himself in a big racial controversy. On Sunday he had an interview with CNN and he claimed he didn't know enough about the former KKK grand wizard David Duke to deny his support. Every time the question about the KKK came up he would change the subject or play dumb in saying he was neither accepting or denying the white supremacist support.
Analysis: Donald Trump is the du,best human alive and honestly so annoying. This connects with the civil rights movement in the 60s and just overall white supremacy and racism. The KKK which is n awful terrorist group tried to keep African American from getting their rights and ... ya know... living. No matter how much Trump tries to deny it he is an obvious friend of Duke. Duke even tweeted about Trumps support. Imagine if (and I know this is scary and hopefully never happens) Trump wins the election. We all know he'd find someway to manipulate his power to try to shove David Duke somewhere in government. (similar to the court packing).

Sam Nester: 23 year old fakes being a high school student

A 23-year old Ukrainian national posed as a high school student, and police just recently captured him. People who knew him were shocked, and said he was a very nice person, and they wish he could've stayed there legally somehow.
I think this shows that we’ve become more understanding of immigration, and even though they still had to send him back to Ukraine, they didn't throw him in jail for an excessive amount of time like they would have done 50 years ago. It also shows that the ID system in DISD is stupid, because it's easy to forge an ID and get into the school.

"Ohio Pastor Shot Dead at Church, and His Brother Has Been Arrested" by Tea Perez 1st period

On Sunday a pastor was shot dead by his brother at an Ohio church. Daniel Schooler, 68, is accused of killing Pastor William Schooler, 70, inside the office of St. Peters Missionary Baptist Church in Dayton, Ohio. The pastor "was the intended and only target" in the shooting, Dayton Police Homicide Division Supervisor Sgt. Richard Blommel said. The gunman sat down during prayers at the church, then went to the pastor's office afterward and started shooting while the choir was singing. Investigators haven't yet identified a motive in the shooting.

This was an awful event that occurred. It is especially sad to here that one, it occurred on a holy day, two, the pastor was shot, and three, the gunman was the pastor's brother. This challenges the ability to bear arms and whether Americans have the right or not.

Finding the Scientific Value of a Life by Shelby Linker, 8th period

How does a U.S. intelligence official decide when too many civilians are present to risk the strike? Although Obama is known for not tolerating civilian casualties the Obama administration has devised its own equation to help commanders determine how many civilian lives a military target is worth but especially in the case of ISIS, Washington has become increasingly willing to balance civilian lives against military priorities. "[The administration] has recognized the need to make difficult decisions about the value of a target and the risk of civilian casualties, and view it with an evolving perspective," said Rep. Adam Schiff on the topic of the war with ISIS.

I applaud Obama for trying to reduce the amount of innocent lives lost during the attacks but I personally find it a bit naive that he thinks he can fight a war without loosing any innocent lives. I know it's preferable to not kill those caught in the crossfire but sometimes it can't be helped. No one can escape a war unscathed or without loosing people in the war and that still counts now. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that human lives are little pawns to play with but you have to think about how many people you are sacrificing and how many people you could be saving. This reminds me of how hard it must have been to make the decision to drop the atom bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki since those were both residential areas as well. Apparently, Truman thought the cause outweighed the lives of the civilians in the area. (Don't misunderstand, I'm not saying drop an atomic bomb either, I'm just referring to the tension and the situation of a dragged out war.)

KKK, Counter-protesters Clash in California

This article is about the recent violence that broke out during the Ku Klux Klan demonstration in Anaheim, California. There was a fight between the KKK members and the counter-protesters. California police officers say that they have seen KKK members protesting throughout Orange County on several occasions, usually handing out brochures and carrying signs, which while controversial, it is protected by the First Amendment.

Analysis: This is a very controversial topic. There are many people who are against this and some who try to back up the members. I don't think any of this article should be allowed. The KKK members shouldn't be trampsing through town and counter-protesters shouldn't confront them, it will always end bad. If none of these groups existed this wouldn't have happened. This can relate back to times when African Americans first received their rights and the KKK was more active than ever, trying everything they could do to torture and get rid of the African Americans and other ethnicities. It is sad to see that people still believe in stuff like this today.

Kansas Police Chief Praised For Heroic Act // Olivia Gillis P3

When a Kansas man went on a shooting rampage on Thursday, most people ran in the opposite direction. However, not law enforcement officers like Doug Schroeder. When Schroeder saw the gunman storm into the equipment factory, he immediately followed. The 2 men exchanged gunfire and Schroeder shot and killed Ford who was armed with an AK-47 style assault rifle. Three people were killed and fourteen were wounded, however authorities believe it could've been much worse if Schroeder hadn't killed Ford when he did. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear but, officials believe he could've been possibly upset after his ex-girlfriend who had took out a protective order against him. Regardless, it was a very heroic move of Schroeder to risk his own life in order to protect others and he is being rewarded and recognized accordingly.
Although this story overall is very sad, it's also very refreshing to see a positive outcome in the midst of so many negative ones. It's very unfortunate that any innocent people were wounded or killed due to Ford's actions, however it could've gotten much worse if Schroeder hadn't stepped in when he did. In the words of Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton,  "Even though he took fire, he went inside of that place and saved multiple lives. He's a hero as far as I'm concerned."
