-Mia Murphy

As the debate over withdrawing from Syria was raging inside the White House over recent days, Mr. Trump argued that the risk of a Turkish incursion could be a threat to the United States forces in Syria, officials said, although Mr. Erdogan would likely face huge reprisals if Turkish troops killed or wounded any Americans. Abandoning the American-backed Kurdish allies, Pentagon officials have argued, will hamper future efforts by the United States to gain the trust of local fighters, from Afghanistan to Yemen to Somalia. On Monday, Mr. Erdogan said that he told Mr. Trump that Turkey would launch its offensive soon, and that he received positive assurances from Mr. Trump. But Mr. Trump promised during his presidential campaign to withdraw American troops from Syria, and has been looking for a way out since. In recent days, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey has given Mr. Trump just such a possible path: Mr. Erdogan has vowed to launch a new offensive against the Kurdish troops that the United States has equipped to fight the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. But Turkish officials have said that before.

Trump is claiming American victory. With this decision Trump has shown the world that America's forces are superior. We have continuously shown an incline of war power, much like our force during World War II.

Honduran Migrant-Mia Murphy

While most migrants are now waiting weeks for processing at the United States border, which officials say has limited capacity, Ms. Joseph said the attention had made it impossible for Ms. Meza to continue waiting. It was nearly 10 p.m. when border officials came out with white plastic handcuffs and called for the Meza family to enter, lawyers said. Like many other migrants traveling from Central America, Ms. Meza is citing gang violence in Honduras as a basis for her asylum claim. Another policy still being considered would require asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their cases wind their way through the legal system. But there is a long backlog of asylum seekers at the Mexican border — roughly 8,800 migrants are in Tijuana now, including 2,800 who have been there for months, officials estimate. Around 8 a.m. Tuesday, the rest of the group was admitted for processing.

We talk of how horrible Hitler treated the Jews in concentration camps. However, we are treating these immigrants the same way. They fled their country to find new opportunitiy in America and this is how they are greeted. It is sad to say that this is our reality and that thewelcoming nature of our free country is nonexistent.

Charleston Rifle Club-Mia Murphy

Though the Charleston Rifle Club was founded in 1855 to promote good marksmanship, it is better known today for a more prosaic pastime, bowling. Eleven black marbles had been dropped in his box. Six or more black marbles would spell rejection. On a Monday night in October, Dr. Brown, a respected emergency-room doctor and native Charlestonian, waited in a hallway of the private club with 13 other men who hoped to be voted in. Then the nominees were ushered out of the room, and the 50-odd club members in attendance began scooping up handfuls of marbles. One of the members who sponsored Dr. Brown’s application had introduced him at the club’s monthly meeting, emphasizing his good character, local roots and military service.

This prejudice towards this black man joining a Charleston Club brings us back to The days in the late 1900’s during the segregation. Conservative beliefs and discriminatory action towards people of color is why our nation is divided. There has been a continuous struggle with the separation of races and we need to find a resolution for this issue in the near future.

Elle Grinnell- a mother and her girls try to reach the US border then they got tear gassed

This has been happening so much lately on the borer of the United States and Mexico. Children and families are being torn away from each other, bring tear-gassed and non of this is right. Kim Kyung-Hoon just happened to be able to get all this photographed. This just keeps on happening more and more lately and more people are either ending up injured or killed.
This honestly reminds me of slavery time where Thomas Jefferson was saying all men are created equal but he owned slaves. Donald Trump is doing the same thing saying all people are equal but then wanting to build a wall. He is as well tearing apart families and hurting innocent people.

Firearm injuries in U.S- Mia Murphy

More people died from firearm injuries in the United States last year than in any other year since at least 1968, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It was the third consecutive year that the rate of firearm deaths rose in the United States, after remaining relatively steady throughout the 2000s and the first part of this decade. There were 39,773 gun deaths in 2017, up by more than 1,000 from the year before. By this measure, last year had the highest rate of firearm deaths since the mid-1990s, the data showed. When adjusted for population size, the rate of gun deaths in 2017 also increased slightly to 12 deaths for every 100,000 people, up from 11.8 per 100,000 in 2016. It was the largest yearly total on record in the C.D.C.’s electronic database, which goes back 50 years, and reflects the sheer number of lives lost.

The recent increase of firearm deaths can be related to the Ku Klux Klan outbreak. The KKK is a well known hate crime group biased towards African Americans, making them suffer by being tortured leading to a slow, painful death. With this recent firearm epidemic, our nation will continue to suffer from the multiple casualties of innocent people if these attacks remain consistent.

Sophia Zhukova - Weeks after the California fires, a woman and her loyal dogs are reunited at their home's remains

The dog in the USA waited until its owners returned almost a month later to the place where prior to the destructive forest fire in California was their home.
"Madison's dog was waiting for them, as if he was guarding his former home", - reported to local organization for rescue stray animals.
It is noted that one of the employees of the organization fed the dog.

To be reminded, a large-scale forest fire broke out in the North of the US state of California. Authorities evacuated more than 20000 locals at risk. Already on Nov 15, due to fire, the air quality in the disaster area was even worse than in the cities of India and China.

It is still so sad to notice that in news daily. And about this dog, I'm so glad they found each other, it is like another story about Haticko, but just with the good end. But thinking about that a lot of people didn't just loose their pets, but they lost their relatives, friends, homes, other important - it's terrifying.

Sophia Zhukova - Air Taxi

In the latest edition of Voice of America - a revolution in the fight against traffic jams - the largest US company in the manufacture of aircraft and helicopters Bell creates an air taxi.
Also after three months of discussion, Uber chose the University of Texas at Austin and the Pentagon's research unit U.S. as partners. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) to develop a new technology for flying vehicles that will be used in the uberAIR taxi service.
Uber is currently working on vertical takeoffs and demonstration flights of aircraft as oart og the Uber Elevate project so that by 2023 the uberAIR service will be commercially available in Dallas/Fort Worth, LA and Dubai.

If this ambitious project is implemented in the future, it will really help cities deal with traffic jams, as well as give passengers affordable transport. And if it is going to be available for everyone and not cost that much, it can solve a lot of problems. I think, it can prevent new car accidents and make the road more safe. A long time ago people started riding horses and didn't even realize what airplane is and how is it possible for a huge machine like that fly in the sky. But with years the world is getting bigger and bigger, smarter and smarter, and we are opening new things for us. Its exiting to realize that we can be part of that incredible developing.

Sophia Zhukova - New Jersey's Ban on the use of wild and exotic animals in the circus

In the US state of New jersey the government has banned the use of wild and exotic animals in the circus. On December 15, State Governor Phil Murphy signed the 'Nosy Act', writes the Hill. The document was named after the 36-year-old elephant Nosy, who has serious health problems due to his cruel treatment in the circus.
"I am proud to have signed the Law of Nosy. And I guarantee that New Jersey will not allow us to exploit and abuse the wild and exotic animals in our state. These Animals should be in their natural environments, reserves, and not to participate in performances where their safety and the safety of people are at risk"- noticed Murphy.

*By the way, on September 30 in Kiev, several thousand caring people walked through the center from Shevchenko Park to Sofia Square in protest against animal abuse. Activists propose to create a animal-police in Ukraine. It should severely penalize keeping animals in bad conditions, and send the victims to rehabilitation.

I can't even explain how I'm proud and happy about these news. I never ever was going to like any circuses, dolphinariums and stuff - animals treated like that never can make people happy. Or, otherwise, you can sit and enjoy the show and it can seem like everything is okay - people around are happy, animals make children laugh - but it just can only seem like that. Because it has its own dark side  behind children's laugh. I think, parents never should accustom children to have fun ar shows like that, they never should support and buy tickets from these shows. Because who knows what really happens behind the scene, how much is it really worth, maybe it is worth someone's life.

Jude Holland - Inhumane Conditions In Cleveland Prisons

Recently, a report was done on the conditions of three correctional facilities in Cuyahoga County in and around Cleveland, Ohio, and the results shocked investigators, which las led to several lawsuits. Cecil Fluker, 40, stated he became sick multiple times from drinking the prison's "tainted water".  Fluke also said he felt extremely uncomfortable in the prison and that he felt like his life was on the line every day. Additionally, between June and October, 6 inmates have died within the jails, either from suicide or accidental overdosage, which could've been stopped had the jails not been so severely understaffed, with 96 vacant positions. Some inmates who have been assigned to the "Red Zone" of the prison, have been held for months without access to amenities such as toilet paper and toothbrushes. The report also reported several pregnant women forced to sleep on the floor. Others have reported unclean food, with mice and other animals found in prison food.

Personally I believe that the prison system needs to be reformed. I don't think jail should be a particularly nice or comfortable place because after all, people are there as a punishment for a crime. However this is no excuse for inhumane conditions such as what was found in the Cleveland area reports. Prison should be able to keep criminals safely detained, while allowing them basic needs. Even though they are criminals and many have done bad things, there is no excuse to mistreat them in a way which can endanger their lives.

Emma Myers- Mom called 911 on gun carrying son

clickity!

Before I start, I just want to say I was really sad and disgusted to see this pop up on the news feed. And I know I have already written about guns and school shootings and shootings in general (also, that's a problem that there are that many things to happen, let alone to write about) WHY IS THIS STILL A THING! WHY IS THERE NO HELP FOR MENTAL HEALTH? THIS KID WAS 14 YEARS OLD!! TAKE A HINT, GOVERNMENT!

Anyway.

Recently, there was a shooting in a school in Indiana. A kid, age 14, who didn't even attend the school, approached it with a gun and shot up the glass doors. Luckily, police arrived the same time he did due to an anonymous tipoff. The tip off? The student's MOM. Thanks to her, there was a lockdown put on the school that day and consecutively saved many lives. After the police and the boy fired back and forth, the boy took his own life. This is seriously affecting the future. The fact that the first thought that ran through my head when I saw this was, "Oh, another one?" already tells a lot about  what's going on here. In our history, this is incomparable. I know that the whole point of this is to have a synthesis and stuff, but yeah. This is an issue. Good deal.

Gun Deaths in US Have Reached A Record High- Maya Friedmann

Last year, nearly 40,000 people in the United States dies by guns. Gun deaths have reached a record high since 1979, the year firearm deaths started to be coded in mortality data. Firearm deaths in data include suicide, homicide, unintentional deaths, deaths in war or legal intervention, and undetermined deaths. Nearly 109 people died every day from gun violence in 2017. The issue of gun violence in America has gotten so bad that it has become a public health epidemic that needs a public health solution.
This article was written to inform people about the recent statistics relating to the issue of gun deaths. The fact that this problem has gotten so bad and so little has been done about it is extremely shocking to me. It shouldn’t be okay for 109 people to die a day from something that could be prevented. It is unacceptable that anyone would let this happen and hopefully some change happens in the near future.

French shooter killed by police- Maya Friedmann

Chérif Chekatt, the man responsible for the terrorist attack at a French Christmas market on Tuesday, has been killed by the police. He had been on the run since the attack where he killed three people and injured 12 others. Interior minister Christophe Castaner said that Chekatt was spotted by three officers near where their original search took place. Chekatt began to shoot at the officers who returned the fire and killed him. This is another tragic event as a result of gun violence that has happened in the world. Chekatt had an extensive criminal record in France, Switzerland, and Germany. He was suspected to have gone radicalized during a prison sentence which explains this recent attack.

Maria Butina: Russian activist pleads guilty in US -- Rose Tharp

In a shocking turn of events, Russian Maria Butina pleads guilty after being held in an adult detention center in Virginia since July. She was arrested trying to infiltrate the NRA to turn the tide of the US arms policies in favor of  Moscow. This investigation has nothing to do with the 2016 investigations as far as authorities know, and her trial is set to be held Feb. 12.

Brandon Spigner - White supremacist fired

Alex McNabb is a white supremacist that was suspended without pay becauase it was found out that he has a neo-nazi podcast. Its disgusting that people are still racist and feel entitled that they are the better race. Its funny how ALl lives matter until we put black and brown people into the equation This reminds me of the holocaust when a certian group was targeted and killed because they were seen as lesser than. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/alex-mcnabb-white-supremacist-emt-suspended-neo-nazi-podcast-surfaces_us_5c126fa9e4b0835fe32763a3

Brandon Spigner - Green New Deal

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a 29 latina women who is newly elected to congress who is making a splash. She is a young women is has big ideas about climate change, and human rights. A green-deal is going to cross the congress that she is backing. It has been something ive heard a lot about, and it will be good for the united states to move forward. This is an important historical decision because illegal immigration is a political issue that affects tons of people in this country who are just trying to make it, organizations like ICE remind me of the soldiers that removed Native Americans from their land to reservations. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/green-new-deal-democratic-support_us_5c117be8e4b0449012f65edf

Trump has cancelled his holiday party.... this is a real tragedy. Michael Cohen Blames Trump 'dirty deeds' as he is jailed -- Rose Tharp

Michael Cohen, Donald Trump's former lawyer used to be very loyal to the president but because of the ongoing Russia investigation, Michael has turned against him.

Because he so forcefully pulled against being investigated in the beginning, even resorting to legal action, he will get 3 years in prison.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-46546238

This relates to history because the President and his people are constantly under scrutiny. The article itself refers to Watergate, which got Richard Nixon impeached. Trump is losing a lot of his "inner circle" and it looks kind of like when Hamilton implicated himself to clear his name in the Reynold's Pamphlet. All of these lawyers and bankers are implicating wrongs that they've done in an effort to cooperate in a large and high impacting investigation.
Text Tax

caden dickinson

The state of California is considering adding a tax to text messages,  they are considering implementing this tax so that they can fund government projects that bring connectivity to the underserved residents. The proposal is strongly opposed by large companies like version and AT&T, there has also been talk of how this proposal may be unfair to some companies, like AT&T and version would be taxed but it's also possible that a select few companies like iMessages an Skype.

Avery Johnson- Michael Cohen sentenced to three years in prison after admitting he covered up Trump's 'dirty deeds'

Michael Cohen, President Trump's former lawyer, was sentenced to three years in prison for tax evasion
and arranged payments attempting to cover up Trumps affairs. He received the longest sentence for
anyone with close relations to a President. The judge wanted to show the importance of the law and the
seriousness of his actions.

This shows that people in government or in higher powers get away with more than the common man.
People of power should be punished for their actions and received the consequences that they deserve.
It is unfair to consequence a person differently based off of the power they have in the government.

Koko Chen - Brazilian Church Shooting

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/11/world/americas/shooting-cathedral-brazil.html

This article talks about a shooting that has occurred in Brazil in church. 4 people have been killed, and the motive of the gunman was still unknown. I feel like as more shootings happens we are getting more and more used to them, not only do guns affect the states it affects the whole entire world, and as the next generation we really need to do something about gun control.

This relates to history by all the mass killings that  have happened and how we are using violence more and more. For example like the KKK, they killed and tormented African Americans. Not only was it unjustified, it was a horrible act and they really oppressed the whole race.

Koko Chen- unsafe work conditions

https://www.bbc.com/news/video_and_audio/headlines/46543808/every-day-i-go-to-work-and-pray-i-m-safe

This article and video talks about how a woman prays everyday when she goes to work that she is safe. Not only is she not paid alot, she also faces dangers everyday like sexual assault. Working in a hotel can be dangerous and you never know when someone is in their room ready to do horrendous things. Thankfully the system is actually doing something and making a call to action.

This relates to world history as unsafe work conditions. When there was lots of child labor going on, many of them without having a choice. They worked in unsafe conditions and often children get hurt and injured. Not only is it wrong that they are children, it is also wrong because when you are working for money i feel like you should be provided with a safe enviroment so it doesnt distract you from work and you can do the best job you are capable of.

Koko Chen - force marriage

https://www.bbc.com/news/av/uk-wales-46458212/forced-marriage-was-a-horror-movie-for-welsh-woman

This article talks about how a young woman was forced to marry a man against her will. She didn't even know him, and is raped daily. He's twice her age and right now she is currently pregnant. She hates her family for doing it to her and she has no choice.

This relates to history by the past how young young girls would be forced to marry men older than them against their will. Like how Pocahontas married John, even though it wasn't against her will, it was wrong because she was only 12!

Koko Chen - Melania Trump refuses to back up Trump in 2nd election

https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1058233/Melania-Trump-Donald-trump-us-president-second-term-FLOTUS-interview-SS-George-H-W-Bush

This article talks about how our current president Donal Trump's wife, Melania Trump, is refusing to support her husband for running for 2nd term presidency. She simply does not want him to run again, and it could be for many reasons. Personally I don't really think she likes her husband that much, because she always rejects his public affection! Like she hit his hand when he was trying to hold his hand! Honestly tho I don't blame her.

This relates to world history by people won't always support you even tho ya'll are close. It's like when the radical republicans wanted to remove Johnson from presidency. Even though its all government, they still go against each other.

Avery Johnson- Women in Rare Company Accept Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry

Two women have recently received Nobel Prizes in science Donna Strickland won the prize in physics and Frances H. Arnold won the award for chemistry. Donna Strickland’s work with high-intensity laser pulses and Frances H. Arnold’s work with enzymes and proteins progressed science while breaking the stigma around women in science and adding to the number of women awarded Nobel Prizes in chemistry and physical.

Achievements such as these progress women's rights even further proving that women play a big role in science. From years in the past the shortage of women in science was too large creating a stigma of female scientists. To have role models for young women to look up to now in the field of science is a big accomplishment.

Koko Chen - Spain's minimum wage increases by 22%

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-46539748

In this article it talks about how the minimum wage in Spain has jumped to 22%, because of many peaceful protests, and people fought for it to deserve it. It is known as one of the biggest minimum wage increases in history. I am very glad that they are paying  people more because honestly some people work so hard and barely make any money to live by.

This relates to history by the way of protests and people fighting for what they believe in. For example when women fought for women's rights, they protested and formed movements and it has brought us to where we are today and we are only getting more and more stronger.

GOP-controlled Senate breaks with Trump on Saudi vote - Gabriela Schwarz

The US senate, in direct conflict to the President, voted to move ahead in the discussion to sanction the Saudis regarding the murder of Khashoggi, and the war in Yemen. The war in Yemen has become the worlds biggest humanitarian crisis, and the US is supporting and selling arms to Saudi Arabia, so that the Saudis can attack Yemen. Senators are convinced that the Crowned Price of Saudi Arabia ordered the killing of Khashoggi, and they want him removed from power. They are trying to get a vote on the issue next Thursday, hoping that they cut off US involvement with Saudi Arabia.

Avery Johnson- Why N.B.A. Stars Are Trading In Their Nikes

N.B.A. players are signing deals with unexpected shoe companies and not continuing to make deals with
nike. These companies are eager to find more deals with basketball players because of the hype around
the sport, but basketball shoes have gone down in the shoe market. The brands are trying to appeal to their
customers based on culture instead of the performance of the individual shoe.

Brands appeal to customers is the most important factor to sell a product and to convince or appeal to their
audience they need to relate to the buyers and not to the N.B.A. players. They are trying to sell the look of
the shoe and not how the shoe works itself. Businesses use these appeals all the time to get investments
and increases profitability.

Avery Johnson- Is Tech Too Easy to Use?

The more advanced technology is becoming the easier it becomes to use which to customers is a positive
but the simplicity of navigating technology could be the problem. Security becomes an issue when the
demand for easy navigation is growing. Although the convenience of technology is helpful for users it is
just way for the companies to increase profitability with a risk of miscommunication of information and
less effort used.

The article has an interesting point of view on the increasing convenience of technology with the
problems of security and misinformation, but it is not a problem for the companies to increase
profitability. Both sides win, the consumers and the business keep the circle of money go around.

Avery Johnson- Markets Rise After Positive Signals Between U.S. and China

The world's stock market has taken a sudden rise after president Trump talked about securing a trade deal
with China, but rapidly shot back down the following day. With President Trump and President Xi Jinping
agreeing to a 90 day truce regarding the trade war the markets are changing suddenly. The potential trade
with China has greatly influenced the world stock market with the sudden highs and lows at every turn of
events.

The stock market has repeating patterns of increase with following drops for years later. The stock market
is an unpredictable waiting game needing to be patient to see the next increase in stock after time of
decline. When there are trade deals in the making it's an opportunity to jump on and the rate of change
becomes unknown.

Michael Cohen Sentenced to 3 Years After Implicating Trump in Hush-Money Scandal Video- Gabriela Schwarz

Michael Cohen, President Trump's lawyer, has been sentenced to 3 years of jail after admitting guilt to lying to congress, campaign finance violation, and tax evasion. He lied to congress concerning a development for a Trump Tower in Moscow. He also, paid hush-money in 2016 to two women that had affairs with Donald Trump, Stormi Daniels and Karen McDougal. $130,000 were given to Daniels and $150,000 to McDougal to buy their silence during the 2016 Presidential election to better the chances of Trump winning. Cohen came forward with tons of evidence against the President, which could lead to Trump's impeachment.

No war needed to harm Yemen children - maria golici

Three-year-old Yussuf Adel and his mother were lucky to escape the Yemen Civil War. He sadly suffers from Diphtheria because he was never able to get properly vaccinated. Diphtheria is a respiratory disease which causes a layer of dead cells in the throat or nose which blocks airways. His mother did say that with the war going on she was too scared to go to the doctor with her son. Now that they are safe in the southern city of Aden her son is able to get the proper medical care he needs.

This article was written December 12, 18 at 12:37 PM.  The disease Diphtheria was discovered in 1884. In the late 1920s and early 1930s a vaccine was discovered that helped prevent this disease from happening. Now babies usually get this vaccine when they are 2 months old. This disease is also a lot harder to get of you live in the US because you are a lot more exposed to open and decently clean air. Furthermore we have more available to doctors and medication.

McDonald's has a plan to reduce antibiotics in beef

Kristen Ramirez

Hi! Welcome back to another blog and sadly our last one this semester. So, I know we all have said that we were gonna stop eating McDonalds due to their food process but, how long did that last? Not long, no matter how unhealthy their food is, I think we can all say that something about it makes us still eat it. Well, recently they released that they will be giving animals they use in their food chain less antibiotics. In fact, for a couple of years McDonalds has stated facts about pledging to no longer serve chicken with medically antibiotics. Recently McDonalds got an F grade.

Its crazy how now these days nothing is healthy for us. Some foods are either not good for you or too much of it causes problems. I really hope that fast food chains eventually lead in a direction of healthier ingredients or better sources. Now in our society health is a big thing and something a lot of people focus on.

Micheal Cohen sentenced to jail

Micheal Cohen is being sentenced to jail for three years for crimes he committed and also Pled guilty . He claims that he is the victim in this situation but we all really know he helped trump. He Apeared in court and also had his jury that day. In my opinion this guy should be sent to prison for what he has done . He’s a very clear bad man if he tries to change the whole thing to not blame him but blame trump. This relates to American history by showing that the justice in this country is still their for crimes you commit

Former Plantation Tries to Give a Fuller Picture of its History -Cleo Chaney

Original Article: https://www.npr.org/2018/12/09/672349672/a-former-plantation-begins-to-tell-a-fuller-story-of-slavery-in-america

The Monroe Plantation, once run by the 5th US president, and once occupied by 49 slaves, is a historic site surrounded by tourist attractions that has thousands of visitors each year. Tours, concerts, and even weddings are held there. This plantation, formally called Monroe’s Highland is advertised as just “the home of the fifth president,” and its tours gloss over its legacy of slavery.

George Monroe, a descendant of the slaves who labored on Monroe’s Highland has recently engaged the executive director of the site in trying to include the history of the slaves that worked there in tours and etc. They are involving other descendants of the 49 slaves, many who live in Monroetown, which freedmen from Monroe’s Highland formed after their emancipation.

I think it’s important to make sure the full history of a place, person, or event is told. The erasure of oppressed people’s experiences provide a one-sided view of history. When George Monroe was young, he thought he must have been related by blood to James Monroe, until his father revealed to him that his ancestors were slaves on the very plantation that remains today. Usually, the details of slavery are not explored because of how uncomfortable they can be, but it is just as important to acknowledge how black Americans succeeded against all odds in building communities wherever they were. It is very meaningful for people to be able to see where their ancestors were 150 years ago and how their labor, though overlooked, built the US.

Best Friends Sisters Mary Kreuper and Lana Chang were on the staff at St. James' Catholic School in Torrance, California (close to LA) have stated that they express "deep remorse" regarding their actions. Sources say they managed to get away with this by creating a separate bank account and storing the money there. It is believed that this didn't all happen overnight, it had been happening over the last 10 years. The sisters have been very cooperative with authorities, and no criminal charges will be placed on them.

Analysis: Honestly, this sounds like it's straight out of a movie and I love it. I think this is great, and you definitely don't hear something like this everyday. Before reading this article I had heard nothing about this whole situation, and now I'm glad I have. This article was written by the writing staff at BBC (the names weren't listed), and this article was written to show how everyone can always be a little evil, even nuns. This can be related back to August 2018 where two nun lunch ladies were found that they stole ~500,000 dollars over the course of three years.

Trump asks Supreme Court to reinstate asylum ban during appeals -Grecia Jimenez

Trump is trying to deny assylum to the central amerian immigrants seeking help, completely ignoring the law that any immigrant is eligible to apply for assylum regardless of how they entered the country. "These measures are designed to channel asylum seekers to ports of entry, where their claims can be processed in an orderly manner; deter unlawful and dangerous border crossings, and reduce the backlog of meritless asylum claims," the administration's emergency appeal says. "The measures will also assist the President in sensitive and ongoing diplomatic negotiations with Mexico and the Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras."
In the caravan of immigrants, there are sick mothers and children trying to escape poverty and ask for help only to be faced with closed doors. These are people, human beings deserving of sympathy. Even those who enter the U.S. legally face the long periods of waiting for their case to be acknowledged. Some of these cases are denied without being looked at and many of these immigrants are kept in detention centers for months waiting for assylum. No human being should be caged up and looked down upon while reaching for a helping hand.
This issue  can be compared to when Irish and German immgrants came to he U.S. escaping poverty and famne and they were let in. We also have to keep in mind that this was Native American land before it was ever even the 13 colonies. Many people compare the central american immigrants to white colonizers, but these have no relation due to the colonizers coming to kill, steal, enslave, and appropriate while the immigrants are just seeking help  and escape from their poverty-struck countries.

3 dead, 11 injured in shooting in France-Grecia Jimenez

On December 11, a shooting classified as a terrorist attack occurred in Strasbourg, France near a christmas market. Of the 11 wounded, five people were critically injured, according to the local prefecture. Members of the French military confronted the suspect between 8:20 p.m. and 9 p.m., using their weapons twice in an attempt to intercept him, Castaner said.
Although the intentions of the gunman are unknown, it is evident that he was there to kill and hurt people. Even if only three people died, that is three too many. People no longer feel safe sending their children to school or go out to do their holiday shopping. Schools in that area of France remained open, but parents had the option of keeping their kids home due to the alert for terrorism.
This situation can be compared with the multiple attacks made during the civil war on either side and the fear to be killed in the crossfire

The Arctic is melting- Maya Friedmann

Over the past three decades the oldest, thickest ice in the Arctic has declined by 95%. The oldest ice is basically a glue that holds the Arctic together and keeps it cold in the summer. Young ice melts and grows back quickly but isn’t stable enough to hold the Arctic together, which is why the older thicker ice is so important. Over time there has been a shocking decrease in the volume of old ice in the Arctic, scientists fear that this pattern will lead to an entirely ice-free Arctic Ocean in summer. Ice in the Arctic reflects a large amount of sun slight back to space, but without it the dark ocean absorbs all of the sunlight which warms the ocean and the planet. A warm ocean stops the regrworh of ice in the future so the planet will just keep warming itself without it. Science estimated that the impact of the loss of the arctic sea ice will be equivalent to six years of global emissions.
This issue is related directly to climate change. The article was written to inform people about what’s happening to the Arctic’s ice so people can attempt to do something to prevent it.

"Nazi-themed" posters found on SUNY campus -Grecia Jimenez

Posters featuring "Nazi-themed" images were found around the campus of the State University of New York at Purchase on Sunday, according to university police. This issue was very concernibg to the campus due to 10% of their students being Jewish. A suspect, a student, has been arrested, Chief of Police Dayton Tucker said in a statement Tuesday. The Westchester County District Attorney's Office will be pursuing a charge of first-degree aggravated harassment, Tucker said"That this hateful act took place on the last night of Hanukkah when our Jewish community members were celebrating the survival of their religion, makes it even more reprehensible," he said. "Please know that these posters, and any message of anti-Semitism and intolerance, go against our core values of diversity, acceptance, and understanding. At Purchase, we are committed to ensuring that all members of the community are accepted and welcome, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, background, or identity."
It seems that hate runs through the veins of society these days, messages of hate aappear to surround us and wrap our lives so often that we have become numb to them. Regardlessmof race, religion, identity, and orientation, we should all stand up for eachother and defend our brothers and sisters whose voices have been silenced  for centuries. We must stand up to the hatred and White Supremacy.

Pose Makes Golden Globe History- Maya Davis

Pose is now the first TV series with a mostly trans cast to be nominated in any category for the Golden Globes. Pose is a show that takes place in 1980s New York with a focus on the LGBTQ community and ballroom culture. The show explores not only the complexities of ballroom culture, but issues like the HIV/AIDS crisis. Pose is known as a groundbreaking show that's helping normalize seeing trans people on TV in roles that talk about trans identity.

Personally, I love pose and I was so happy to hear that it got nominated as I think it's doing a lot for the television industry and has very good writing. This show reminds me a lot of a documentary called Paris Is Burning which explores the real lives of LGBTQ people that ate, slept, and breathed in the ballroom. The film makes history as is was selected for preservation in the Unites States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.

Racially charged rant at Columbia University - Paola Aceves

http://time.com/5476414/columbia-university-student-racist-rant/

A video recently came out of an incident that involved a white student and a group of students that were minorities. The video consists of the white student yelling, "White people are the best thing to ever happen to the world." The student was identified by the University.

Due to the history this country has with discrimination, we still seem to face some of it today. Its very sad to know that people still think this way. It is even more sad to know that people still take it as far as confronting others they believe lesser.

"Alabama 9-year-old's family says bullying drove her to suicide" -Grecia Jimenez

McKenzie Nicole Adams was found dead on December 3rd by her grandmother. The family of the 9-year-old girl says bullying and racist remarks drove her to kill herself. “She was being bullied the entire school year, with words such as ‘kill yourself,’ ‘you think you’re white because you ride with that white boy,’ ‘you ugly,’ ‘black b----,’ ‘just die’,” Harris told the paper. According to Adams' family, she was also bullied at another elementary school she used to go to, leading them to transfer her to U.S. Jones Elementary School. "There is no record of any bullying during that time and there’s no note as to why she withdrew," he said. "She transferred to U.S. Jones Elementary School in Demopolis and she’s been there ever since."
It is unbelievable that a nine yeear old girl KILLED herself because of racism. Our society has infiltrated this prejudice and hate to our children, who are supposed to be the future leaders. Children arent born with hate in their hearts, they learn it from the people around them and the parents who raise them. Schools should educate kids about these issues and inform them on why its wrong instead of pulling the "just don't bully" card.
This tragedy ties to history because racism sprouted from slavery, war, and segregation. We would not have this intense hatred for the color of another person if the enslavement of millions had not occurred. Not too long ago, it was acceptable to degrade, spit, insult, and separate someone because of their skin, progress is yet to be made.

Texas rapist receives no jail time - Paola Aceves

http://time.com/5477092/baylor-accuser-angry-plea-bargain/

A former Baylor student was very upset when the verdict on her case would result in her rapist, also a former student, to receive no jail time. Instead he was let off on probation and with a fine and counseling. The man will not even be registered as a sex offender. This would not be the first time this judge has let off cases of sexual misconduct. He has let off other cases, one of which pleaded guilty, on probation as well.

We continue to see the way women are treated as lesser in the legal system. Speaking up on issues, whether it be large scale, or personal, aren't taken as seriously as they should be in many cases.

Racism On Campus- Maya Davis

At Columbia University, a sophomore student was caught on camera berating students while going on a rant about white supremacy. The student says that the comments were taken out of context and that it was a sarcastic response to student's claiming that Trump supporters encourage sexual violence. The student also apologized for going over the top in his rant. The student says that he is a Trump supporter but also doesn't any way encourage sexual violence. Other students responded and said he had no right to share his views on women because he's a white male. The student goes on further to say that rhetoric he used was so that he could sarcastically demonstrate the idea that white people are not allowed to embrace their cultural achievements.

To me this rant showcases his superiority complex.. In the rant he made several inaccurate statements about things he thought were developed by white people. While he said he was being sarcastic, I don't think that was the word he was trying to use. I think he meant animated or over-expressive. He himself said the point of the rant was to showcase the accomplishments of white people.

This can be compared to so many parts of American History where people falsely accredit things to white people. This reminds me a lot of Julian Carr's Speech at the dedication of Silent Same. Silent Sam was a confederate soldier who was given a confederate monument in 1913. The dedication speech was full of white supremacy taking points and fallacies, much like the rant that the student went off on.

Shooting in France- Madison Malonson

12 people were shot and two were killed after a gunman ( who is still at large), opened fire at a Christmas market in Strasbourg, France. The scene caused panic throughout the city. The police are still trying to find the shooter, and people are most definitely still scared. The market will be closed for the next couple of days, but people will be able to pay their respects to those who lost their lives.
It is incredibly sad that even during the holiday season, people are in fear of their life. It also goes to show, that America is not the only country that is plagued by gun violence. In America we have had a lot of issues with gun violence and we should continue to try to make a change. I hope in the future I won't have the opportunity to write about another shooting in America or in another country.

‘Transgender’ Could Be Defined Out of Existence Under Trump Administration- cris sanchez

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/21/us/politics/transgender-trump-administration-sex-definition.html

after reading this article i found it very odd how they want to silently go about trans life style. its already hard enough transitioning but having your president try to define your gender is just a new low. kids and adults live in fear of coming out and this is a great example of why. you're defining other peoples genders with a close minded opinion. with this being said it is meant for us (non-transitioning people) to be better educated and open to this concept of the LGBT+ community.

GUESS WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON -by kloe rhoden

Hello, first I would like to start off by thanking my weekly readers, couldn't make it here without you, mrs. countryman for the assignment and of course God. Now for this weeks blog, our topic is Trump giving hush money to his sexual assault victims. Yep, that's right the leader of our country paying off victims. It breached financial campaign laws, because there is only a certain amount of money you can give to people during this time, and he over exceeded that giving over 500,000 in total. He made it so that during the end of his campaign, also the most vital part, was hushed. A company bought the rights to her story and sources say trump bought it from them so it was never shared. One of his victims was Stormy Daniels. Yes the porn star, his lawyer Cohen convinced her to sign a contract vowing her silence, reluctantly she signed it away but still wanted to share her story. We must understand the impact of her decision. Letting a man get away just like that. Is this who y'all really voted to rule our country? I just... wow. In other news this relates back to history, because the republican views were against any type of porn and had a very old fashioned way of thinking, but then trump comes up with an ex porn star for a wife which goes to show that he is slowly changing what the republican party stands for. I personally believe this is an impeachable act and that impeaching him should be seriously considered. Thanks for tuning in see you next semester. DON'T FORGET TO LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE. ;)

High School Football Player Confesses To Killing Pregnant Schoolmate- adriana chavez

https://www.cnn.com/2018/12/10/us/mishawaka-student-killing/index.html

A 16 year old High School student has confessed to fatally stabbing a classmate because she waited too long to tell him about her pregnancy to get an abortion. The two teens had agreed to meet up to discuss the health of the mother and baby since this was the first contact the two had in a couple of months. Trejo, the alleged father, had been planning to kill Breana for a while according to sources. Once they met up, Trejo pulled a knife on her, fatally stabbed her to death, and disposed of her body, her cellphone, and the knife in a nearby dumpster. Aaron Trejo is now faced with charges with the murder and feticide death of Breana Rouhselang. Evidence suggests the scene could have been more violent with the strangling of her scarf.

Analysis:
This article was written by Susannah Cullinane and was published by CNN today and was recently updated about an hour prior to when i read it. I had no prior knowledge to this subject and was completely shocked when I came across this title. The fact that he went to this extent just because the mother didn't bother to tell him if she was getting an abortion disgusts me. It is horrible that this was his way of handling things when there are so many other options that dont involve killing people.  Each day people seem to commit even worse crimes than the day before.

Camille Cole - Russian Spy Works With US Government to Avoid Jail

Summary: Accused Russian Spy Maria Butina has reached a plea deal with the United States Government after she infiltrated GOP circles such as the NRA right before the 2016 election. Her plea deal will mostly pertain to information about how her boyfriend was involved as well as all of her relationships and interactions with her handlers.

Analysis: This is an interesting point in the way that the prosecution method of the United States works. Somebody has committed a crime and now they can get their sentence wiped clean or limited if they give up information about other people involved with the crime too. I believe it is just to do this, however it also can get pushed too far if corrupt people get on the other side of the plea deal. This immediately reminded me of the Rosenbergs back in the Cold War who were executed for providing information to the USSR.

Stampede at Italy nightclub kills 6 people- Paige Aleman

A stampede at a rap concert in central Italy killed five young teenagers and a woman who had accompanied her daughter to the event and 59 people were injured. People were rushing towards the exits after some accounts have said that and irritant was sprayed (like pepper-spray) and one of the barriers near the exit gave away and cascades of teenagers tumbled over it, and fell on top of each other.

This event took place two days ago on Saturday, at an overcrowded disco which may have been the result of organizers selling too many tickets. reports had said that an irritant was sprayed which caused the panic an led to the people rushing to get out the doors. This article was created two days ago and at the time it was said that it was too early in the investigation to see if any safety violations could've played a role. Safety should be assured to everyone no matter where they are, and nobody deserves to day in a way like this. Because people were so focused on themselves and their own safety, they didn't stop to think that they're killing someone else or putting them in critical condition.

Zoe Williams: 16-year-old kills mother of his fetus

After being reported missing by her mother, a 17-year-old cheerleader was found stabbed and suffocated to death in a dumpster.  It was discovered that the father of her unborn child was the murderer.  He blamed her for waiting too long to tell him and said that he did what he needed to do.  He lied to the police repeatedly before finally coming clean.  She was the manager of his football team.

This occurred in Indiana just this week.  I trust abc as a reputable source and the writer repeatedly referenced court documents to source their information.  It's really unfortunate that the girl felt the need to hide their child from the father.  They had sex and should have realized the possible ramifications of that.  This story is a perfect example of the importance of proper protection and sex ed.  If they had both of those tools they would've been on the same page of not wanting a child, but because they did not, they obviously struggled with two different opinions that were to affect both of their lives.  The father took unforgivably reckless action, but if we can mentally bring the situation down to a respectable level of abortion vs. no abortion the issue at hand is much easier to understand and sort through.  I am pro-choice, which is often confused with pro-abortion and that gives a very obscured view of my actual beliefs.  Being pro-choice I believe she technically had the right to keep the child, but it is his child too, so it should've been a discussion rather than a one-sided decision.  This incident can be related to pro-choice advocates marching on Washington in 1992.

Beto O’Rourke Emerges as the Wild Card of the 2020 Campaign-in-Waiting - Lily McCollum

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/09/us/politics/beto-2020-presidential-race.html

The 2020 election is sure to be controversial. After nearly defeating Ted Cruz in the most recent Senate race in Texas, Beto O'Rourke is becoming increasingly popular as a possible Democratic candidate. He has notably successful with small donors and has received much support from Obama's advisors and the nation's youth. The Democratic party is currently very unorganized when it comes to selecting their candidate; over three dozen democrats are considering running. There is also debate within the party on whether or not now is the time for a nonwhite or female president. Beto worries about losing the personal touch that helped his senate race, but believes that now is the time for him to take office. He is already working hard behind the scenes to get his candidacy in action.

I personally think that Beto would be a great choice for the presidency. He greatly appeals to the younger generation and nonwhite and female voters, whose vote is very important. With the comments and actions of the current president, these groups and empowered and will likely have a large impact on election day. I wish that our country was in a place to not elect another white male, but at this time I think that it is too risky. We need a candidate that has widespread support and will not be too controversial.

Trump scared about impeachment ? Yes

President trump is scared of being impeached lately due to the fact that the democrats will be taking over house soon and that he sees impeachment as a very close and possible chance for him . Democrats also claimed that trump created an impeachment crime and could be sent to jail for this after he leaves office . IN my opinion I think it’s not a bad idea to consider impeachment for trump. This man hasn’t done anything positive for this country yet and I highly doubt he will soon which is why they should just kick him out of Offcie and take him to jail straight away.
This relates to the American history by seeing how the branches work together and agree and disagree and get answers from looking st stuff and taking things to court .

"Yellow vest for protest" An interpretation of BBC News article by Adelaide Willert

"Yellow vest protests 'economic catastrophe' in France"

According to the BBC News article updated seven hours ago, there have been four consecutive weekends of yellow vest protests in France against economic catastrophe. This includes high fuel prices, expensive living costs, and more economic standards that affect the everyday civilian. Protests started on November 17, where 282,000 people grew together to protests. The police got involved, and one person died, 409 were injured, and 73 were put in custody. At the second riot on November 24, 166,000 protesters showed up, with 84 of them being wounded and 307 placed in custody. The third yellow vest protest on December 1, had 136,000 people protesting, with 263 ending up wounded and 630 in custody. Most recently, the December 8 protest against 'economic catastrophe'  had 136,000 protestors, 118 of which were injured and 1,220 of which wound up in custody.

The people of France have every right to protest against the 'economic catastrophe' in France, especially regarding the high costs of living. This, though it is international, connects with U.S. history. The Americans rebelled against Britain when they were placed under heavy taxations, which sent the economies into a state of economic catastrophe. Though the American rioting was less peaceful, it yielded the country's freedom and eventually the abolition of slavery.

Camille Cole - SUNY finds Nazi Propaganda Posted Around Campus

Summary: At SUNY Purchase, this Monday, Nazi-themed posters and propaganda was posted around campus. This came on the last night of Hanukkah. The campus released a statement to faculty and students addressing the act and saying that punishment will be coming to those that did it.

Analysis: This is absolutely horrifying. This is how hate starts in a country. With small acts like this that grow larger and larger until they are consuming the people to act in such a terrible way. Something must be done about anti-semitism on a national level that will take care of this and make sure that things like this will stop happening.

Camille Cole - Kavanaugh Votes in Favor of Planned Parenthood

Camille Cole - Kavanaugh Votes in Favor of Planned Parenthood

Summary: A recent case came to the Supreme Court involving Planned Parenthood. In a 6-3 vote, Kavanaugh voted in favor of Planned Parenthood which was a shocking decision to most, and made one Republican Senator, Senator Susan Collins, feel “vindication.” This vindication was refuted by others as the case did not have anything to do with abortion.

Analysis: I believe that this is a massive win for the Democratic Party as we see that this Justice will (hopefully) do what the Supreme Court was meant to do: be non-partisan. The main reason that a justice is supposed to be able to serve for their life is to avoid the pressure of the current politics, and do what is right.

Accused Russian spy Maria Butina cooperating with federal prosecutors as part of plea deal -Martina D’Orso

Maria Butina is an accused Russian spy of 30 year of age who was arrested for being accused of being a foreign government agent. Recently, she filed a plea basically saying how she wanted to make relations with powerful US officials to benefit Russia. Furthermore, she was accused of offering sex for information, but this was later shot down as the evidence was interpreted incorrectly. Both sides have questionable aspects that just dont add up, or that were plain wrong, such as accusing Butina of offering sex for information.

Before reading this article I had no previous knowledge of the topic, and this makes it a bit harder for me to understand the full concept of what happened. We have seen this happen before, Russia or other foreign country sending spies, for example the Illegals Program in 2010 which was a culmination of 10 Russian spies who got arrested. This just further goes to prove how foreign disputes or alliances only end up hurting countries in the long run.

Camille Cole - Even President Trump Thinks He's on the Way Out

Camille Cole - Even President Trump Thinks He’s on the Way Out

Summary: A source close to Donald Trump claims that he has recently spoken of impeachment as a “real possibility.” This comes following the recent election of a majority Democrat House as well as the Democratic Party claiming that they know of an incident that could be classified as an impeachable offense. The incoming Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee says that if these accusations prove to be true that he would be impeached. The incident in question appears to be whether Trump directly told Cohen to pay Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal with campaign money.

Analysis: This could mean a giant win for Democrats across the nation as this has been on the lips of liberals around America since before Donald Trump even stepped foot in the Oval Office. This can also stand to show the American system of government working in the way that it was intended to take out a corrupt politician in place. This reminds me of past Presidents Johnson and Clinton and how both were impeached but neither of them were removed from office. This just goes to remind that even if Trump is impeached, the fight is not quite over.

Man Held Without Bail in 13 year old Hania Aguilar's Murder- adriana chavez

https://www.cnn.com/2018/12/10/us/hania-aguilar-kidnapping-killing/index.html

Michael Ray McLellan made his first court appearance with charges of the murder and kidnapping of 13 year-old Hania Aguilar. He has been denied bail on first-degree murder along with other charges including first-degree burglary, and robbery with a dangerous weapon. Hania went missing about a month prior from her driveway into a relative's idling SUV and drove off. Her body was recently found in a body of water off of a rural road, with the SUV abandoned about 10 miles before.

Analysis:
This article was published today by CNN news and has been kept updated throughout the day. I had zero prior knowledge to this subject, I wasn't even aware of the fact that you could be denied a bail. In my opinion, I think it was correct to deny him a bail due to the prior crimes he committed which included an unrelated rape case in 2016. This case had him on a bail of $5 million, and was soon bailed out. I feel that now he can actually face the consequences of the crimes he committed to the full extent in prison because now there isnt a chance he gets to be bailed out like nothing happened. I feel like he didn't even try to become a better person because he went from rape crimes to now kidnappings and murder cases. This shows there is an unacceptable risk of his behaviors that must be prevented so no more people wind up injured, or even dead.

Anna Speer- Is impeachment of the President going to finally happen?

With the democrats taking over the House of Representatives next month, President Trump is starting to worry over impeachment proceedings against him. Although several allegations have been looming since he was elected into office, mostly around Russians and vote tampering, Trump and many of his West Wing aides feel like the payout his former mistress is what might sent him out of office.  Much of this information is tied to information they are receiving from Michael Cohen, Trump's former attorney.  (Cohen is currently looking at a long sentence for all his wrong doings related to Trump.)

Only two Presidents in history have been impeached by the House of Representatives: Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton.  Both were later acquitted by the Senate.

Daviah Harrison-Record number of cases of polio-like illness AFM in US this year

This article is by Debra Goldschmidt and was updated last on Monday December 10,2018. It talks about the acute flaccid myelitis illness that is polio-like and how the illness has peaked every other year in the fall. There has been a decline in the number of patients under investigation and it is expected to continue but unfortunately no one knows what causes this to happen, especially in  children.

This is such a sad situation and I believe this was posted to update people about the illness. This relates to polio, which was a very rare illness and is similar the the illness that is going around now. I hope that the people that this illness has affected will get better and I hope that a cause and a cure is found.
