Sophia Jalilvand: 'Will there be WiFi in the internment camp?' Muslim comics take aim at Trump

Summary: Muslim comedians have been, understandably, using President Trump as new stand up comedy material. Four days before the show, "The Big Brown Comedy Hour" sold out, which supposedly never happens. The comedians make jokes along the lines of "the last comedy show before Trump deports us" and other similar things, They explain that they have to laugh in order not to cry.

Analysis: It is truly heartbreaking to see that people, even lighthearted comedians, are fearing for their lives in Donald Trump's America. People who have established their entire lives here are worried that they are going to be sent away. Both of my parents are naturalized United States citizens with dual citizenship for both the US and Iran. My mom was very excited to take my brother and I to Iran this summer, but she told me just the other day that she is too afraid that we won't be let back into the US. Families have already been split up. Trump wants to protect the people of America, but I don't think he understands exactly who the Americans are. This can be synthesized to Adolf Hitler because he capitalized on the people's fears and made slow changes that eventually escalated into the Holocaust.

Shane Dawson Kicked Out Of Tomi Lahren's Party for Being With Boyfriend - Trinity Bella Hawkins 4th

Summary: In this article from Affinity Magazine, writer Mikayla Connolly describes the events of January 23 in which, Tomi Lahren, an ultra-conservative right wing political commentator, hosted a party in honor of veteran remembrance, and Youtube star Shane Dawson and his boyfriend Ryland Adams were allegedly kicked out of said party for their public displays of affection such as kissing, holding hands, and hugging. The two turned to Twitter to vent their frustrations and Lahren, who is known for having scandal, rebutted their claims with a lengthy Facebook post that stated that the information Dawson were circulating was "fake news", that their appearance was "spectacle to advance whatever political message they placed above common courtesy for our veteran event" and that these were "tricks of the Left". After the post, both Dawson and Ryland retracted Lahren's name but the hashtag #IStandWithShane was circulating. Reporters also found that hours before Lahren's post, she wrote a tweet targeting the LGBTQIA+ community, stating that "LGBT community claims to be victimized by bullies so they spread fake news & encourage supporters to bully me? Makes no sense. Sad.". There have been no further comments from Lahren or Dawson.

Analysis: Okay, let's face the facts - Tomi Lahren is a woman who says what she wants, to whoever she wants, because she feels like she can. And she can. In the system we live in, a cisgender, blonde haired, blue eyed, thin white woman such as Lahren can say whatever detrimental things she wants without any real repercussions because the system we live in does not place value on lives of non cis, binary, non white people. And with our recent inauguration, the electoral college has told us what they really think of people who don't look like them or who love different people than them. If it wasn't Tomi Lahren who did this, even if she didn't, I wouldn't bat an eye if she did because of the hateful rhetoric she sprouts. I stand with Shane because he, my LGBTQIA+ friends, and everyone else in the world deserves to live in a place where they are valued and their life has value, and where they can be free to be themselves, wherever they are. Until that time comes, it is our job to stand up for them, to reject and fight the system, where I, your classmate, peer, fellow student, and fellow human, am not valued because of the color of my skin and where your fellow peers, students, and humans are not valued because of who they love. Stay woke, people.

Synthesis: This is eerily similar to how up until 1956, Thailand hadn't decriminalized what they deemed "homosexual acts".

Kobe Williams (1st Period) - Deputy's Bodycam Catches Him Stealing

Recently, Deputy John Braman of the Volusia County Sheriff's Office in Florida resigned from his 10 year veteran job. His motives were caused by an alleged body cam video that shows the deputy stealing money from a DUI suspect.  Apparently, there were "multiple" allegations of the deputy stealing money from wallets. At first, he was placed on paid administrative leave. Later he decided to resign completely.

This story makes me slightly worried for this country's protection. I definitely understand that this is the only widespread case that we're aware of right now. However, this act is just intolerable. Though I am curious whether the officer will be punished for these actions or will just be let off scott-free.

Democrats block confirmation votes for Sessions, Price and Mnuchin
Joshua Klein

This article is about the democrats in the senate who are taking a stand against Trumps cabinet nominations of Tom Price and Steve Mnuchin, as well as attorney general Jeff Session. Democrats in the senate have taken every action possible to delay the voting on these cabinet members, even boycotting the confirmation vote. Most democrats are unhappy with the firing of former attorney general Sally Yates and explain this and the immigration ban as the reason for the boycott.

I think that this boycott is completely justified. I think the firing of Attorney General Sally Yates is completely unconstitutional and on the verge of disrupting democracy. It's not democracy if the people don’t have a say, and people follow the democratic party; so when Trump fired Sally Yates, he was acting in a way that we see at the beginning of a totalitarianism government in that he removed a political rival. I think this is completely unacceptable and even scary. Firing another politician for having a different political view is not democracy.

Liza Kaye: Twitter makes plans to stop harrasment

http://money.cnn.com/2017/01/31/technology/twitter-combat-harassment/index.html?iid=ob_homepage_tech_pool

Recently, people have been claiming twitter as the social media platform of violence and abuse. Lots of accusations have been made, inferring that twitter allows such harassment to take place. For example, Donald Trump tweets up to ten times everyday. While there are settings options to mute specific people of your choosing, these tweets are still allowed. Although Trump's tweets are far less harmful than other examples, people are still complaining. Now, twitter has made a statement that they are urgently putting out a solution to this problem. Several new features will be allowed for use in the coming time. For example, if someone replies to your tweet, you will have the ability to delete it.

This relates to history because it shows a democracy in a way. The people expressed their views and concerns, and now twitter (the government) is working on improving and compromising. This twitter concern is a great way to envision how the ideal government system should work, cause and effect.

Sarah Childs- Deputy Resigns After Body Cam Video is Released

Summary: Deputy John Braman, a 10-year veteran of the Volusia County Sheriff's Office in Florida, resigned on Monday not long after officials released body camera video that allegedly shows the deputy taking money from the wallet of a DUI suspect. The 33 year old was placed on paid administrative leave last Wednesday as the sheriff's office investigated "multiple" allegations that he had taken money from defendants during DUI arrests. They claimed, "he represents an infinitesimal number of bad cops around the country but when this gets played in the news it makes everyone who wears the badge have to defend themselves against the actions of this idiot, and that's what he is, a thieving idiot." Body camera video released by the sheriff's office allegedly shows Braman taking two $100 bills out of a DUI suspect's wallet while the suspect was cuffed in Braman's vehicle. Braman then put the wallet in a plastic property bag, and that $200 in cash was not inventoried later, a defense attorney for the DUI suspect told WESH.

Analysis: This article was published by Eric Levinson from CNN on January 31, 2017. The author uses a third person point of view to convey an unbiased article. Additionally, I had a little previous knowledge of these tensions between officers and citizens, so this article made me realize how important our relationships are with our protectors. We need to use body cameras everywhere to protect not only our officers, but also to point out which ones need to go.  This article was written for any citizen of the US, or fellow officers who have been in the wrong and not caught. Although this act was not as drastic as the taxation of the colonies from Britain, this could connect to this if you believe that the colonists were outright robbed.

Nadia Blanton -Trump Bans Immigration from 7 countries

Summary: This ban caused much confusion as to exactly who was effected by it. It has been not clarified how Green card holders or lawful permanent residents are are effected by the ban. Many of whom were planning on coming to the United States have had to either cancel out the possibility all together or have their circumstances evaluated individually.
Trump insists that this ban is not a "Muslim Ban," however it does prove to have religious preference towards Christians, which could cause some legal challenges.

DFW airport detainees released by Caitlin King

On January 27th, 2017, Donald Trump signed an executive order banning all travel from muslim-majority countries such as Syria, Iraq, and Iran. This affected people in the air as well as those on the ground, and when planes from these seven countries landed in DFW, they arrived to shocking news of the ban. These travelers were detained until January 29th when most of them were reunited with their families. This has been a long and stressful weekend for detainees, but this week will be even longer for legal officials trying to sort these matters out.

This article was written on January 29th and updated on January 30th by a local news channel, CW33. It contains a video clip of a news story containing shots of protests in DFW's international terminal D and happy detainees being reunited with their families. It shows how Trump's ban is affecting more than muslim "terrorists" but is also affecting everyday American people who picked a bad time for a vacation, and families trying to visit their children in the US who may be attending school or working to make a better life for themselves and their families.

School for Refugees Make Signs Welcoming other Refugees
Students from a suburb in Alabama that attened the International Community school have made signs that say "Don't be afraid you are welcome" and other welcoming sayings and posted the outside  in their neighborhood. Many people have said that their community is such a great community to live in. The neighborhood had posted these signs in response to Donald Trump's executive order in banning refugee's from entering the country.
It is amazing that there are children of all ages are trying to make a statement on what is going on in our country right now. It sends a large message through our country. It is very heart warming to read about this because I believe that Trump should not ban refugees from entering our country. I blieve this because these refugees want to come to America for a better life, toget away from the terror in their own country , and to meet their families herein America; and to deny a person's right into a country is terrible. America is made up of immigrants.

Trump fires acting attorney general for not supporting Muslim ban- Elijah Macias

Summary: Earlier on Monday, President Trump fired, acting attorney general, Sally Yates for refusing to enforce the recent Muslim travel ban. In a press release, the white house stated that Yates,“betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States.” The White House has named Dana Boente and has ensured that he will enforce the immigration act.

Analysis: Well I mean, i suppose this was justifiable- she did refuse to carry out an order and influenced others not to support the ban- but i mean, I completely understand her reasoning( and i'm sure all of you understand her reasoning) ;She felt that what Trump put out was Unlawful and therefore she could not enforce it- and it sure did seem unlawful. This entire Muslim travel ban fiasco has many Americans rallied up in opposition to this crazy ban- and it's no wonder that she would refuse to enforce such a crazy ban. This month has been quite crazy with all of these new Trump Administration laws and stuff.
You can directly connect this time of foreigner distrust and hatred to the rise of the Nativists and the Know Nothings. They wanted America for Americans and didn't want anyone coming in to mess it up for them. That is eerily similar to our stance on Syrian refugee crisis and the Mexican Immigration problem.
I really just hope that Trump can just redeem himself so that we can be at peace for once, but knowing Trump and the kind of guy he is- I highly doubt we will see any massive improvements. we will only be a split country full of unhappy people.

Mystery of Roger Curry Solved - Mollie Hamman 1st Period

One day an old man was found on the side of the street in Britain with no form of identification and no memory of who he was. He was taken into a care home and went by the name of Roger Curry because he once said that that was his name, although people were not sure if it was correct. Eventually someone posted a photograph of him from high  school and police were able to track down an address all the way across the sea and the U.S. to California. When they showed neighbors pictures of him, they said that it was definitely Roger. Later they found that his son, Kevin, had taken him to the UK and left him there. Roger was later taken back to the U.S. and moved into another care home a few miles away from his original home.

Anecia Forbes: Hmm, this moon looks remarkably like the Death Star

SUMMARY: If you ask Star Wars fans, they will tell you the connection is strong with this one. This week, NASA released a stunning photo of Tethys, a large moon circling Saturn. But all people are talking about is how strangely similar it looks to the Death Star. Like the Death Star, Tethys has a large, distinctive crater that NASA has named Odysseus. But unlike the Death Star, its rock core and icy surface protects it from internal combustion. Sorry, Han and Luke. The photo was taken by NASA's Cassini spacecraft, which has been sending back some jaw-dropping images from the ringed planet. The moon can we just call it "Teth Star"? -- is Saturn's fifth-largest. And its distinctive shape is a result of its own star war. NASA attributes this moon's crater to the result of external impacts. While those impacts don't make Tethys unusual as far as moons go, it does make for a daunting resemblance looming not so far away.

ANAYLSIS: This article was written by Madeline Holcombe from CNN. This is very very cool and interesting to me. It just amazes me how craved and distinctive this crater is. This could be synthesized to constellation of stars and how they sometimes create images. The universe always interested me because of how huge it is and all the wonderful things we haven't discovered about it yet. I can't wait for what new discovery takes place out there!

Marshall University Protects Students of Donald Trump's Travel Ban

Angelica Salazar 1st period

In the article and video, the problem with Donald Trump's travel band causes issues between international students in the United States and their home of any middle eastern country. Usually, because of the small amount of international students within colleges, most of them wouldn't pay attention nor consider helping any of the effected students. Fortunately, the West Virginia University, Marshall University,  does its best to help and support its students. This University had a meeting for all students to come and share their opinion Donald Trump's travel ban. Additionally, they even created a special forum.

This correlates to the time within 1890-1910 because immigration was a huge and debatable factor during this era.

Trump fires acting AG after she declines to defend travel ban Maggie Gibson

President Trump fired the current attorney general Sally Yates for "refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States; (Yates) has betrayed the dept. of Justice," the White House said in their official statement. Yates was informed of her dismissal by a hand-delivered letter, and Dana Boente, US attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, was sworn in at 9 p.m. The cause for dismissal was reportedly because Yates told Justice Department lawyers not to make legal arguments defending Trump's executive order on immigration and refugees, claiming that the position needed to be legally defensible and is informed by the best view of what the law is after consideration of all the facts. Later, she stated, "At present, I am not convinced that the defense of the executive order is consistent with these responsibilities nor am I convinced that the executive order is lawful." Stephen Miller, White House policy director, claimed that Yates's decision is a result of "our politicized legal system.", despite the fact that Jeff Sessions, Trump's nominee for attorney general, said that Yates's decision was likely similar to the decision he would have made. The debate over legality and numerous lawsuits against the executive order have caused the effect of the order to wait until Jeff Sessions is sworn in as attorney general.
The author of this article was slightly biased towards Yates, bringing to light facts that highlighted her decision in a positive light, and how firing her was a dramatic and unneeded move by Pres. Trump. However, I agree with the author. Yates's job was only going to last until Trump's nominee for attorney general (Jeff Sessions) was sworn in, but Trump fired her solely in a display of power and narcissism. This decision to create such unrest in the Justice Department reflects badly on the priorities of the Trump Administration. The eventual decision of the constitutionality of the order will be up to the Supreme Court, not whoever the attorney general is. I think Trump made a decision based on his own vanity and self image, and not based on logic and what's best for our country as a whole. This doesn't forebode well for the next four years under the Trump administration.

QUEBEC MOSQUE SHOOTING

QUEBEC MOSQUE SHOOTING January 30, 2017
SUNMARY: In Quebec a mosque was shot up by Alexandre Bissonett who was coined as the lone wolf.6 people were pronounced dead but he was only charged with two murder trials.

ANALYSIS: The fact that this shooting was not called a “terrorist attack” is crazy. If this was a Muslim shooter to a heist Ian church, the headlines would be TERRORIST ATTACK. It pisses me off. The racism that is splurged upon the Islamic religion. But when it's not a Muslim person it's “oh he was mentally ill”. It's not fair. He should be going to proson was longer than he got.

SYNTHESIS: This can be compared to the Charleston church shooting that took place June 17, 2015. The shooter placed a mentally ill claim was called a scared child who needed help. NO. He was a murderer who needed to be put away.

Hayley Cagle, Canada: Gunman Attacks Quebec Mosque, Killing 6 and Injuring 8

Summary: A man walked into a mosque in Quebec and opened fire. This killed 6 and injured 8 others. The Canadian Prime Minister declared this as an act of terrorism.

Analysis: People being murdered just for worshipping their religion is a sign of the world's zero tolerance for people who believe differently. This idea that you can just do whatever you want because you don't have the same views as someone else is completely absurd and invalid.

Leslie Z- Trump travel ban: Thousands join protests across UK

With a loud and united voice millions of American people all around in the world have expressed how they feel about the new president of the United States.Just recently in the UK thousands of people gathered in London to protest against the controversial travel ban what was specifically for Islamic countries like Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, and Yemen.Within only two weeks in the presidential chair president, Trump had proved that he's willing to achieve and accomplish all of his promises. Therefore many countries have transmitted their support or opposition to his decisions, as a result a petition called for PM Theresa May to cancel Mr.Trumps visit to the UK gathered more than 1.5 million signatures.

The article was written by the BBC news to informed the population about the changes that are happening in the world ever since a new president was elected for the united states. It's not abnormal to see the diverse countries uniting their voice to show awareness through social media or protest just like they did when 43 students went missing in Mexico or when terrorist attacked France back in 2015.The voice of the people who are marching and protesting in American take us back through time to when only white men were able and vote.It took about two centuries for abolitionist, activist,  and radicals to raise their voice against the government and demand their rights. So, in my opinion, there's no better time for us to use those unable right giving to us in the declaration fo independence to express our opinion.

Trump Travel Ban- Ethan Lacey

Trump made an executive order on Friday, that he was banning all refugees from entering the United States for 120 days and banning immigration from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia. Trump states that the ban has no correlation with religion (which would be illegal), but only because they were countries with a high threat of terrorism. Many immigrants are being detained in airports all across the country and huge protests have risen in support of detainees. Courts from all across the country have ruled different things, some say his order is completely legal, some say immigrants can not legally be detained, and others ruled that the immigrants should be sent back to their home country. A supreme court decision is expected to see if the executive order is legal or not.

I believe this immigration ban is complete illegal, it is based on religion and Trump is over stepping his boundaries. This executive order is also Un-American, this country was built on immigration, and now Trump believes it is acceptable to not allow a large majority of the middle east to travel to the U.S. due to a very small percentage of the population being apart of terrorist groups. There are other methods of keeping our country safe from terrorist attacks without banning immigrants from 7 countries. This travel ban can be connected to the ban of Japanese Immigrants during World War II. Both of these bans were out of fear and profiled a whole race of being dangerous individuals.

Mackenzie Bessner- Former president Obama 'heartened' by engagement over Trump immigration ban

Former president Barack Obama said he is 'heartened' by American civic engagement, following a weekend of spontaneous protests in the wake of President Donald Trump's executive order related to immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries. Kevin Lewis, Obama's spokesman referenced Obama's farewell address, in which the outgoing president called on Americans to get involved to demand change. Obama quoted, "it's the insistence that these rights, while self-evident, have never been self-executing; that we, the people, through the instrument of our democracy can form a more perfect union."

I knew what was happening before I read this article. I was very saddened to read this article and just do not understand why Trump is doing what he's doing. Not only is his immigration plan deplorable, it will harm the U.S economy. What Trump suggested would cost the federal government from $400 billion to $600 billion. I believe Trump has no grip on political reality and really doesn't know what he is doing. I think people voicing their opinions is very important right now. People need to be heard and maybe, it could make a difference in this world right now. This article was published by CNN and is a very reliable news network.

Anna Czyzewski - Trump Supporters Applaud "Extreme Vetting"

Summary: In light of Trump's recent call to "extreme vetting", thousands have protested it, calling it the "Muslim Ban", which fits its perimeters quite well. Though the Ban places an extreme weight on Muslim refugees (and not so much for Christians), Trump supporters have assured the country that this is for their safety and they are in fact feeling a lot safer already. A number of supporters promise that "nobody hates [immigrants]" and they "love refugees". They just want to be safer, yet others have pointed out that this could eventually help ISIS find new recruits and strengthen the hatred for America. A Latvian refugee spoke out that if they want to come to America, they can wait. Yet that disregards the fact that it was already hard to get in to America before this order.

Analysis: As I read these peoples' accounts, I begin to understand their viewpoints just a little bit. But as I see them defend it as if it were not discriminatory of Muslims, that understanding fades. There are many sources of violence in America. Another example of such deadliness come from white men shooting up schools, churches, and movie theatres. If white Christian men are killing so many innocent people too, why don't we ban them? Because without them, Trump's ideal America would not have anyone populating it. This has not been the first time a race has been banned from the U.S. In 1882, the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed, but was eventually ended. Who knows what it will take to stop this unjust exclusion of so many innocent people.

summary-
From saturday morning to late on sunday and into the next day families and friends waited at the DFW air port along side protestors and across the nation to see if they were able to see their loved ones. Isabella Bruner- Trump Travel Ban : Here's what you need to know

Synthesis:
Already, not even a half a year into Trump's presidency and he has already signed and approved documents about immigration restrictions. For example he signed an executive order Friday night to keep out refugees from entering the country for 120 days and immigrants from seven predominately Muslim nations out for three months. This enraged green card holders and people with valid visas, some travelers who were in the air weren't able to enter the country when landed. It turned into a a full country protesting, chanting things like "No hate, No fear Muslims are welcome here". One speaker by the name of Elizabeth Warren speaking things like "We will not turn away children. We will not turn away families." Places like New York, Chicago. Boston, Dallas, San Francisco, and Seattle with hundreds of people in airports expressing their dislike to Trump's actions.

Analysis:
This article written by Doug Criss on January 30,2017 talks about Trump's actions already have such a negative effect of our role as a country. I think that it is absolutely horrible that he is doing this to people who just want freedom and protection. This is NOT what Americas role and model is for people around the world. But, I also think that it was just destiny for him to become president because it will help us join together even more for a common cause. He will help us citizens of the United States of America join to show and prove the power of the people. He will help us not see our differences, but our similarities. This has happened before with the Gentleman's Agreement with Japan to limit the immigration influx into America.

Qiaunci Jones- You are welcome here.

The International Community School has been a fixture in the Atlanta suburb of Decatur for 15 years. It's a public charter school where refugee children learn side by side neighborhood kids.
On Monday, when students arrived at school, they were greeted by signs. Dozens and dozens of them planted along the sidewalks. "You are welcome here," said one. "You are loved," said another.

I believe this is just a step into welcoming those who are mistreated and forgotten. It's a beautiful sign for refugees children to know they have a place, especially after what they have been through. I can connect this to when they started creating schools  to educate all.

"Muslim Ban" - Camryn Stafford

summary:
Questions about immigration and the rights of these refugees have emerged three days after Trump signed an executive order preventing immigrants from staying or coming to the US. There are many problems about whether or not the President can do this unilaterally and without the checks and balances policies enforced. There is still question on who the Ban will impact but many opposers are labeling it as the muslim ban. Refugees from any country are blocked from entering the US for the next 120 days, Syria refugees are barred indefinitely, and citizens from seven Muslim-majorit countries are banned from entering for 90 days. The law even banned legal permanent residents who hold green cards. Many airports are starting to enforce this new policy.

analysis:
This article was created by Amanda Taub and Max Fisher from the New York times. Although neither of them are suffering directly from this order, they still found it important to educate others about the impact this may have on these refugees and america as a whole? It's unfortunate that this is happening at a time like this because although america is trying to progress, we seem to be moving backward. Although this is surprising, this isn't new news. Donald Trump made his intentions clear throughout the election process as he was running for president. This article was written to enlighten America and the rest of the world on the questionable actions of our new president. This is a very important time for America right now because we are all unsure about what other bold actions Mr. Trump may order. This can be synthesized to the Know-nothing party in the 1840s.

can burnt toast and roasted potatoes cause cancer?

summary:

Recently, the Food Standards Agency in the U.K. released a study that burned toast and other starchy foods that are cooked at high temperatures can cause cancer if too much is consumed. .
This specific campaign is based off of longstanding evidence that are based on animal studies. Other experts state that other lifestyle factors can cause much higher risks of cancer such as obesity and smoking. The reason that burned foods can cause cancer is because the aclarymide levels that already exist in bread, potatoes, etc. increases to levels that a lot of people cannot handle.

I love this study because it now can make us more aware of what we eat and how we cook our food. My mom is a health coach and has actually studied this theory for a long time. I don't think eating slightly crispy food is bad as long as it is eaten in moderation. But, the reason i don't like how these scientists figured out that burned foods can cause cancer is because they experimented on animals. I'm sure there was another way to figure out this data without using live animals. But overall, I am glad that people are now more aware of these possibilities and will hopefully encourage better eating habits.

Google Doodle celebrates Fred Korematsu's 98th birthday- Leah Lara

On 1/30/17 the google doodle celebrated the 98th birthday of the American civil rights activist. Korematsu was born on January 31st, in Oakland California. He spoke out against the interment of Japanese Americans during WWII. After the bombing of pearl harbor, the government put out an executive order (9066)  that forced Japanese Americans onto internment camps. They were forced out of their homes, and had their property and wealth taken away from them. In 1942 Korematsu was arrested for resisting to go to a internment camp. He petitioned his arrest in court, claiming that the internment of Japanese Americans was unconstitutional. The case eventually went to the Supreme Court, and the court sided with the government. In 1983 Korematsu's conviction was vacated, and he was awarded the Korematsu Presidential Medal of honor in 1998.

Its amazing that we celebrate this man's birthday days after the president enacted an Executive order that enacts the very principals that he fought against. Refugees are being persecuted just because they share the same nationality or religion as a terrorist. Saying that ALL Muslims or ALL Syrians are dangerous and a terrorist is a damaging generalization that hurts everyone involved. We cannot give into fear and start to alienate and persecute innocent people in the name of "peace."

Jordyn Chapman- By Squeezind and Twisting, New Robots Could Keep Hearts Pumping

Summary: Researchers from Harvard have created a silicone sleeve that has been proven to help a pig’s heart continue to pump blood after it’s failed. With some tweaks, there’s a chance the soft, squishy robo–sleeve could work in humans, keeping hearts beating until a transplant can be performed. The robot is made from an adjustable elastic silicone sleeve lined with narrow tubes. One set of tubes wraps around the sleeve while the other set extends from top to bottom. Air pumped through the tubes makes the sleeve twist and contract. “When these are pressurized with air in synchrony with the heart cycle, the device can squeeze and twist like the underlying heart and augment its function,” study leader Dr. Ellen Roche explained referring to the tubes. Researchers induced heart failure in pigs and were able to see an obvious result in pumping the blood. With concerns about blood clotting, there were modifications in the making before use with humans. "There's a lot of work to be done, but ultimately we would hope it to last for years," she said. "We will continue working on this technology and work towards long-term pre-clinical studies."

Analysis: This article was published on FoxNews on January 30, 2017 by Walt Boner. Prior to reading this article, I had no idea about the advancements doctors were making in this situation in particular. This article shows to inform others of progress that has been made and is important in showing us how much technology is taking over in both good ways and bad.
Synthesis: This article is connected to the various changing practices in medicine as the years went on and people were more educated.

Emily Anderson- robotic baristas

Cafe X Technologies, an innovative firm, created the first ever robotic barista in the coffee industry. The CEO of the company realized that too many people wait in line for coffee everyday. About a year ago, they started creating a more efficient robot to do the work. That way, people can get their coffee in only a few minutes. The customer has the option to pick their drink, flavor, and intensity of it. From there, the robot, nicknamed Gordon, can make your drink with its robotic arm and can even dump it out if the drink is incorrect. The robotic barista was just released today and has averaged around 120 coffee drinks per hour. Although this robot only exists in San Francisco, the company hopes to bring this new technology to many more shopping complexes in the near future.
It's incredible how much technology can do for us these days. Just a little over a century ago, the Industrialization Era was in full swing in the United States. They created all sorts of new technology like steel for railroads, the telegraph, and the lightbulb. All these inventions helped with the advancement of society and allowed people to live more comfortable, just like how modern technology has done that for us. This article also addressed how this new technology could take away jobs from workers in the U.S. Luckily, Starbucks, one of the biggest coffee corporations in the world, is not planning on replacing their workers with robots. Overall, I think this article was super interesting to read about to see how advanced our society is really getting.

Chloe Dupuy-Snakes on a Plane

Samuel L. Jackson is no longer the only person who has seen a snake on a plane. Ten years after the actor's iconic film Snakes on a Plane terrorized ophidiophobes everywhere, passengers on a Carrier Aeromexico flight to Mexico City on Sunday spotted a serpent slithering around in an overhead luggage compartment. A passenger captured a video so the rest of the world could be as terrified as those aboard the plane. Especially when the giant green snake suddenly dropped down from the overhead bin.

This may be funny comparing it to the Samuel Jackson movie, but if that snake bites as poisonous and attacked you don't know who could've died. Those who controlled the plane still do not know how it could've gotten there. If a snake could somehow find its way on a plane, who knows what else could be found. Obviously, airports nationally upped their security processes making sure nothing got passed, but is it good enough? Safe enough? They need to fix this and take more precautions. Nobody is safe.

Gracie Darlington: Starbucks pledges to hire 10000 refugees

In response to President Trump's travel ban, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz released a memo saying that Starbucks will hire 10,000 refugees over the span of the next 5 years in the 75 countries the company does business in. Schultz also emphasized Starbucks's support for President Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, "which helps undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children get driver's licenses, enroll in college and secure jobs". In addition, Schultz mentioned that if any new taxes, immigration restrictions, or trade sanctions are put in place, the company is "ready to help and support our Mexican customers, partners and their families" if need be.
This article was written to inform its readers of Starbucks's new policies regarding Trump's new travel ban. Many other businesses have also taken action, and some tech executives have denounced the ban altogether. Many of their partners, employees, and customers are in the countries named in the ban, and it hurts their business. This article remained very neutral, only providing the facts.
This can relate back to the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798 which restricted the rights of immigrants.

Audrey Griffin "Police say mom kept boy locked in bathroom for a year"

Police say mom kept boy locked in bathroom for a year

Summary: A 12 year old boy was found locked in the bathroom by his own mother for over a year. He was severely malnourished and weighed only thirty pounds despite his age. The conditions inside the bathroom were horrific: no light, no bed, and barely any water or food. The boy's mother claimed that she locked him in the bathroom for his own safety and that he wanted to sleep there. The doctor at the hospital where he was sent following his discovery by his own father stated that it was the worst case of malnutrition he had ever seen. The surprising thing about it (to me) was that he lived in the house with two other siblings who showed no signs of abuse.

Analysis: This story both shocked and appalled me. I could never understand how anyone could do something this horrible to another person, let alone a mother to her son. I'm glad the boy was found before it was too late and I hope he can go on to live a happy and healthy life. This can be synthesized to Guantanamo Bay because of the unjust imprisonment and disturbing conditions the captives were held in.

Sydney Bridgeforth - John Legend Speaks Out At The PGA Awards

Summary;

John Legend slams Trump at the PGA Awards.  Legend stated, "Our vision of America is directly antithetical to that of Trumps.  I want to specifically tonight reject his vision and affirm that America has to be better than that."  This statement was made in regards to the news of the #MuslimBan that happened over the past week.

Analysis:

I had never read an article by this author.  There was no bias to the article. It was written presenting the facts of the night.  A lot of what is going on now is history repeating itself.  I totally agreed with the statement he made and wish that Trump would have slowly rolled out the Executive Order

Lauren Cargill - Guess Where All Those Avocados Come From

Summary: "If President Trump goes through with a proposal to tax Mexican imports, prepare to spend more for a bowl of guacamole." The US expected to get 80% of their avocados from Mexico in 2017 says the president of the California Avocado Commission. If you're wondering, that's 2.14 billion pounds of avocados. Only 10% of avocados are grown in the US, meaning the country cannot meet the demands for avocados. "I'd say it's all but impossible for California to get anywhere close to meeting the demand," says the CAC president. Despite all this, Mexican avocado growers say they are not concerned.

Analysis: I think that people often over look the small things when they have ideas. I doubt Trump put a lot thought into how putting a heavy tax on Mexican imports would actually affect the population. This could be compared to the taxes Britain placed on America leading up to the American Revolution.

gray breidenbach: couple charged for locking son in basement

gray breidenbach

A Gwinnett County couple convicted of locking their son in a basement for several years faced sentencing on Monday. The judge gave both defendants, Ricardo and Therian Wimbush, the same sentence- 20 years in prison and 10 years of probation after they were convicted for locking their son in the basement, and for not treating their other for skin cancer. Each Wimbush was found guilty on three counts of second-degree cruelty to children in a Gwinnett County courtroom last week. They represented themselves throughout the trial.

This incident is horrific that some one could do this to a child. Im actually very glad that these people got the sentencing they received. There is absolutely no excuse for doing this to a child. Im just shook.

Kiri Luckey:

Student Bullied on School Bus for Wearing 'Make America Great Again' Hat

A 12-year-old student from the St. Louis area was bullied for wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat on the school bus. Cellphone video obtained by KMOV shows a group of students ganging up on the boy and yelling about President Donald  proposed U.S.-Mexico border wall. It appears some punches were thrown. Cortina said she is outraged that her son was suspended in the aftermath of the incident, though he was the victim. "I saw him being berated and bullied and beat, literally beat, because he feels strongly about the world today," the sixth-grader's mother Christina Cortina told KMOV. A representative for the Parkway School District said all students involved in the attack have faced "consequences" following a full investigation.

Synthesis: This is so sad! We all have the freedom of speech so just because you don't agree with someone else's opinion doesn't give you the right to bully them or  talk badly about that person. The boy is only twelve and probably doesn't understand all the details of what all is exactly happening all he knows is that Trump keeps saying "Lets make America great again".

Isabella Poscente- Obama is inspired by Engagement over Trump

Summary:

The former president, Barack Obama said he is inspired by America’s  engagement in politics with all of the protests for President Donald Trump. This past weekend Trump made an executive order on immigration for 7 Muslim-majority countries. And Americans are getting involved and demanding change.

Analysis/Synthesis:

This article was posted on CNN and is very relevant to today’s society. This article made me very sad because of Trumps poor choices. I feel like he has no idea what he is doing and it is tearing our country and economy apart. People all around the country are protesting. Having a voice and stating your opinion is very important in today’s society.  Is’t America supposed to be the land of freedom?
