Madison Harvey - Details released in thwarted Columbine-style school shooting

Summary- In The Villages, Florida, two teens were arrested for their involvement in a plan to carry out a mass shooting in their school, The Villages Charter Middle School, according to the Sumter County Sheriff's office.  School officials became aware of a rumor going around in the school on Tuesday about a mass shooting that was going to take place on Friday.  A student told deputies that he overheard 13 year old Zachary Shearon saying he was going to "shoot up the school on Friday."  The police intercepted Shearon Wednesday morning as he arrived for school.  They began an investigation and the boy said he did make references to the shooting at Columbine High School.  The boy told the principle and the resource school officer that he "made a dumb statement" after school was dismissed.  He said he had been talking to his friend Richard Hummer, 14 about the Columbine school shooting and specifically about the shooting in the cafeteria. "Imagine if that were me shooting," Shearon told Hummer.  Another student heard him telling other students not to come to school on Friday.  Shearon told the resource officer that he had been depressed and had thoughts of suicide.  He said "I just want to die".  In their plans Shearon told Hummer that "when he drops the pencil in the gym, it means go" and Hummer said that "go" meant "shoot".  Hummer said he was involved in the plan but said he thought Shearon was joking.  Officers said there were no guns found at the school.  On Thursday the boys were both arrested at their homes and with a warrant the officers searched their homes found loaded fire arms in both homes.  In the police report someone told the officers that Shearon had attended a Holocaust tribute were he wore swastikas on his hands and a Nazi logo on his arm.

Analysis - This article was posted on January 26th 2017,  by Dawn Brooks, Webb News Editor and Jennifer Ortega, Reporter of WKMG of ClickOrlando.com.   This article was written to inform the public about the serious threats that were made by these young boys and that there are very serious consequences resulting from their threats.  Thankfully the students and school staff took these threats serious and immediately informed the police department or who knows what could have happened.  This of course reminds me of the tragic Columbine High School shootings.
