"Adam Silver Bans Sterling For Life" (Melissa Kurtzman, 5th Period)

Summary: On Tuesday, NBA commissioner Adam Silver banned Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling from the NBA for life and also fined him $5 million. This turn of events comes after a recording was released by TMZ over the weekend that included Sterling making various racist and outrageous remarks to his supposed girlfriend. Players, coaches, and fans have all expressed backlash over Sterling's comments and some have even silently protested; the Dallas Mavericks wore black shoes during their game on Monday in solidarity against Sterling.

Analysis: I think Silver made the right call in banning Sterling from the NBA. Sterling has been labeled as racist for many years and has been suspected of buying his way out of numerous business and personal lawsuits so I'm glad karma has finally turned against him. I hope the new owner of the Clippers is much more fair in the way they treat the players, team employees, and others and brings a new light to the Clippers and the NBA.

I’m sure most have heard the controversy over statements made by Donald Sterling, owner of the Los

Angeles Clippers. In the article, NBA Hits Clippers Owner Sterling With Lifetime Ban, $2.5 Million

Fine, by Bill Chappell, the decision made today is discussed. It was announced today that after racist

statements made on Friday, Sterling will be banned from the NBA. This includes attending games or

practices, being present at facilities or being active in the team. While often, sports suspensions are

short lived and not serious, I feel that this issue will most definitely be followed through with. It’s

strange that people still think this way but unfortunately they do and I think that this reaction was

warranted.

"NBA bans Donald Sterling for life, fines him $2.5 million for racial comments," Carson Wright,

The NBA has banned Donald Sterling, owner of the LA Clippers, for life from all NBA events and fined him $2.5 million for racially charged comments made to his reported girlfriend, which include: "I ask you... not to bring [black people] to my games" and "It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you're associating with black people," as well as insensitive comments made about Magic Johnson.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver said that he's "personally distraught the views expressed by Mr. Sterling came from within an institution that has historically taken such a leadership role in matters of race relations." "I fully expect to get the support I need from the other NBA owners to remove him," Silver said.

I agree with LA mayor Eric Garcetti, who said, "I want to thank the commissioner for bringing down the hammer." This debacle was not one to be overlooked or brushed under the rug with a slap-on-the-wrist reprimand; the solution to this had to be considerable. And the scale of this punishment is, indeed, considerable.
The thing is, Sterling has a lifetime of racism behind him. Adam Silver had said that "in meting out this punishment we did not take into account his past behavior... when the board ultimately considers his overall fitness to be an owner in the NBA, they will take into account a life-time of behavior." As other sources covering this story have noted, Sterling has run his team in the style of a "southern plantation," and specifically wanted, as a white man, to be in charge of a team of black people.
As was the case with Cliven Bundy, supporters of the Clippers owner have quickly withdrawn their endorsement. And, it seems, the NBA is ready to withdraw Sterling--and, after their rightful condemnation of Sterling's hateful comments, there is no better move to make.

Connecticut Stabbings by Addison Jordan

Summary: A classmate at a school in Connecticut allegedly killed 16-year-old Maren Sanchez, authorities say. She was described by her family as "a bright light, full of hopes and dreams." Maren died Friday after being slashed in her neck, chest and face at school.

“The alleged assailant, a 16-year-old male classmate, was removed by staff members at Jonathan Law High School in Milford,” local police said.

The incident happened around 7 am in the stairwell of the school, and was witnessed by a staff member. Sanchez suffered "multiple lacerations" and investigators "recovered a knife at the crime scene," police said. The Connecticut Chief Medical Examiner's Office has not officially determined the cause of death, although it appears to be obvious.

School staff members and emergency technicians attempted "life-saving measures,” but Sanchez was pronounced dead at Bridgeport Hospital at 7:43 a.m.

Addressing reporters on Friday, the police chief didn't provide a motive but said investigators are investigating rumors that the boy being accused of the murder was angry because Sanchez had declined to go to the prom with him.  The prom was supposed to be that night, but was cancelled.

Analysis: Some people in this world are cruel for no logical reason. I know that it might be heartbreaking to get rejected for a date, but it’s no reason to kill someone. I think the boy who killed Maren may need some serious mental help, because what he did sounds absolutely crazy. He should get the maximum sentence allowed for this cold blooded murder.  My heart goes out to the victim’s family and friends.

Byron Otis-Paul Simon and Wife Arrested

After a heated argument in their fancy home, an hours train ride away from manhattan in their insanely affluent neighborhood, Paul Simon, the famous half of Simon and Garfunkle. He and his far younger wife were led out in handcuffs because of a fight the wife says that "she started." They are now released, after showing the public how nice they can be to each other by holding hands and promising to go to their son's baseball game. I'm glad Paul Simon won't be in prison. Perhaps I shouldn't be, though. Maybe he would have written a song aboutit.

Griffin Johnston, 4th period, Importance of looking at data carefully

In an article in the New York Times, Julie Creswell and Robert Gebeloff report on the unsettling discovery of recent Medicare statistics revealing that one allegedly small Brooklyn Physical Therapist office received $4.1 million from Medicare in 2012 alone. According to this figure, as well as the 1,950 patients that the practice treated in that year, each patient would have received 94 treatments and the practice would have dealt with 183,000 treatments in a year, 500 per day, and 21 per hour. Wael Bakry, the physical therapist that ostensibly bared this massive burden of treatments, points out the fallacy evident in superficial readings of the data. He stated that his practice had, up to 2 dozen physical therapists working at one time as well as having three different locations for his practice (taking much of the burden off of himself). Also, though physical therapy might seem to be an unusual recipient of Medicare aid, the article underscores the fact that the baby boom generation is reaching their elderly years and the demand for physical therapy is increasing. Also, the large amounts of treatments for each patient can be justified by the commonality of a patient coming in multiple times to work out reoccuring pains in certain parts of his or her body. However, the suspicion towards doctors taking checks from Medicare for procedures that were never performed is rightfully held. The article cited two cases where two doctors were accused guilty of taking large sums of money from Medicare for procedures/operations they never carried out (one received 12 million while the other received 77 million in false claims).
Having data that could potentially expose doctors scamming the government by receiving unwarranted aid from Medicare is certainly beneficial, but the data has to be interpreted appropriately. This suspicion towards Bakry, though upon closer inspection is most likely unnecessary, could have harmed his business. People saw a large sum of money that went to a supposedly small physical therapy practice and immediately became suspicious. However, if they had looked at the finer details of the matter, the reason for the 4.1 million becomes more understandable. Regardless a major problem of welfare is that people take advantage of it and get away with it. Though the big culprits are usually caught, the smaller scale scamming of the government does accumulate into a hefty sum. Welfare and Medicare are necessary in maintaining the well-being of the people, but in order for them to be more effective, either the people have to be more honorable, or the government has to be stricter.

This is you on stress Arlesia McGowan Period 4

Is your head spinning from worry? It is possible to re-train your anxious brain, a psychiatrist says.

Article written: Dr. Gail Saltz
Date written: Wednesday, April 23, 2014

So that time of year has come where homework is starting to reign supreme. AP tests are under way and  exams are drifting in the air. Final performances are taking place...and I think any of us couldn't say anything better than the fact that all of us are pretty much "checked out" for this year. We all experience anxiety; its the mental part of fear and when you can't stop obsessing anxiety turns into a problem. Anxiety is future oriented which is why we tend to worry so much. Studies also show that women's brains are more wired to worry than men's. Life will never be worry free BUT you can learn to wrangle your fears.
We can all infer that I had to be under some type of stress to even notice this. I guess I could relate. It is a very stressful time of year for me and probably the most stressful, but I have learned how to deal with it different ways and so far, I'm staying sane. That is all I have to say. I'm out. How has stress affected you and how have you dealt with it?

We've been doing accessibility backwards, shame on us (Sydney c 5th)

So wheelchair ramps are decidedly great, and it's great that more are popping up in public places.  However, this new wheel technology might be even more great for the disabled, because with it, they may no longer need those ramps.
An Israeli-based company has recently created prototypes of wheels that go on stairs, using what looks like a stretchy triangle in the middle to absorb shock.  The design is compatible with existing wheelchair designs, as well as bicycle frames.

Which is really amazing.  Because though ramps are more common now, they aren't everywhere, and independence is always nice.  Tel-Aviv hopes to produce the "Softwheel" by next year.

I think that this is great, and I hope it works well in use.

Aubrey Chick- "U.S. storm system that killed 16 causes tornado in Mississippi"

Summary:
Today in Mississippi a huge tornado formed and threatened many people across the U.S., killing 16. The tornado swept through Tupelo, Mississippi and destroyed hundreds of trees, homes, power lines, and cars. Not only was this area affected, but so was parts of Alabama, western Georgia and Tennessee. Even an elementary school was completely torn down to the ground. People are saying that this storm caused so much damage that it will not be a quick recovery for the areas and families that were affected.

Analysis:
I can't imagine what it must be like for these people affected by this storm. The devastation they have to face after members of their families died and their homes were completely destroyed is terrible. Hopefully these areas damaged will soon be rebuilt and the unity of the people will become stronger through this. It's crazy how much one storm can change people's lives so much.

New Gymnast Spider Discovered

A new species of arachnid has recently been discovered.  It is aptly named The Moroccan flic-flac spider for its remarkable tumbling abilities.  When agitated by any predator or pest, the flic flac spider propels itself into the air with magnificent verve and rapidly moves it's legs, giving it great flexibility and remarkable speed.  In this way. the spider majestically tumbles downhill, uphill or on level ground at twice the speed of normal walking pace.  The flic-flac spider also creates domicile in the sand with silk threads, providing protection from the prying beams of the sun and any predators that might pass it's way.
Thanks to the remarkable movement of the flic- flac spider, Dr, Rechenber was inspired to create an exciting new spider robot that also moves by turning somersaults.  This robot, with it's ingenious mode of travel may be utilized in fields as practical as agriculture or employed in places as remote as the ocean floor or even Mars.  Read all about it here http://www.sciencedaily.com.

Life Threatening Storms. Gloria Jones

Recently lethal storms have ripped through states such as Mississippi and Alabama. The death toll has risen to 19 and continues to grow. I know my sister in Arkansas has been effected by these storms as well getting emails such as "Life threatening storms. Seek shelter immediately."
There isn't much to this story, however I think something should be done about the lack of shelter provided to citizens in areas so greatly effected by natural disaster. Building shelters and providing secure basements should be at higher priority in order to prevent losing so many lives.

Boy Flies To Hawaii In Plane's Wheel Well Ilana Lemack

United States officials say a 16-year-old boy is "lucky to be alive" and unharmed after flying from California to Hawaii stowed away in a plane's wheel well, surviving cold temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen. FBI told reporters that the boy said that he doesn't even remember the flight. The boy from Santa Clara, California, hopped a fence to get to Hawaiian Airlines Flight 45 on Sunday morning. The boy scaled the fence under the cover of darkness and remained undetected as he crossed the airport ramp. San Jose police say they will be reviewing whether charges are warranted against the boy. The child had run away from his family after an argument. It is said that the boy was unconscious for most of the 5.5 hour flight.

I saw this on the news and was wowed so i had to look it up and do a current event on it. this was an amazing story and i honestly dont think that the boy should be charged, he was just having a rough night. and to be fair he did not know that the plane was going to be taking off, let alone taking off for a 5.5 hour flight to hawaii.

The FCC has previously expressed desire to offer a better in-flight Internet experience by freeing up wireless spectrum for telecommunications companies to use. But that process has stalled due to various regulatory processes. Meanwhile, AT&T's planned network will use the same 4G wireless technology and spectrum that it uses for everyday smartphone communications. AT&T's stated goal is to improve the speed issue. The price problem is still a mystery, however, as. AT&T has not yet announced any airline partners or pricing plans.
o make matters worse, Gogo has also become increasingly expensive in recent years. Shares of Gogo plummeted 19% in after-hours trading Monday. Once completed, AT&T says the network will be available only within the continental United States.

AT&T has likely exhausted it's billing system abilities; and is turning to innovation of new air travel fees. This is great because airlines will learn from AT&T's ability to invent new fees, in the same way AT&T wireless and UVerse customers have experienced for years.

The 23-year-old with 24 kids: Genocide orphans form their own families by Joi Ware

Summary: At the University of Rwanda College of Education in Kigali exams start in a week. Jean Claude Nkusi gathers with his 24 children at the back of a building telling them to study hard because it could determine their future. Nkusi, only 23, is not related to any of these young kids except the fact they share the commonality of genocide, they're all survivors. Association for Student Genocide Survivors was originally created by 12 University of Rwanda and has been growing since. They create families based on the college they attend and then elect a mother or father to represent them, from their they create a community to support each other financially and emotionally.

Analysis: This sis amazing, as humans we need this, we need support. We crave the sense of community to lift us up and help us out. These kids have been through so much, they have either witnessed the violence or have been raped and victimized themselves. Almost more than half of these children lost one or both parents to AIDS through rape as a tool of war. They need these families to get back the way they used to be, without the reminder they might not survive in the world.

Why Did the N.B.A. Long Tolerate Sterling? - Victor Ragsdale 4th Period

Donald Sterling is A Racist, But That's Not News for the N.B.A. - Victor Ragsdale 4th Period

Donald Sterling, owner of the L.A. Clippers, was recently recorded instructing his girlfriend, V. Stiviano, to NOT associate with black people or bring them to the game. He has received a bunch of backlash and the players association wants him banned from attending future playoff games of the season, but the problem is that his bigotry has been known for too long by the organization.

I don't understand how people could give him their money knowing that he is so racist. I don't understand how the players signed their contracts knowing that they would playing under a racist-headed organization. I couldn't do it. It really angers me when people so ignorant (particularly racists).

Leslie Kelly: Avril Lavigne’s Dumb ‘Hello Kitty’ Video Is Rife with Cultural Appropriation

Oh, Avril Lavigne. Once, many years ago in a land far, far away you spoke to my troubled tween soul about tween stuff. And you made it seem all deep and hip to wear lots of eyeliner. But ye gods how our paths have changed since then! Now I'm still emerging from a classic rock music snob phase and you're succumbing to the dark abyss of I-didn't-realize-it-was-racist.
I watched the video for you so you don't have to. Basically, the twenty-nine-year old jumps around in a strange, uncomfortable-looking skirt, eats sushi, and tries to sing in Japanese. I'm not going to go on and on about how bad the video is, because there's a much more important issue at hand here and the article gets into plenty of detail itself.
Cultural appropriation is no new trend, but it is a seriously problematic one that needs to stop. Celebrities and fashion movements pick and choose random bits of other cultures that they find glamorous and exotic, like hijabs or Native American headdresses. They're often romanticized and sexualized by people who don't know what they really mean, and when celebrities publicly endorse this epidemic they're spreading the message that it's not racist, it's not wrong. In Lavigne's case, she's prancing around with her prop-like Asian backup singers and trying to speak Japanese with the expertise of any average white anime fan. Cases of cultural appropriation like this commercialize and trivialize entire races, countries, and heritages until they're reduced to these mangled objects that once held value and weight but have since been rendered unrecognizable by a new wave of fans.

Tornado Damage By:Valerie Coahuilas

At least three tornadoes flattened homes and businesses, flipped trucks over on highways and bent telephone poles into 45-degree angles as they barreled through the South on Monday, killing at least one woman in Mississippi and unleashing severe thunderstorms, damaging hail and flash floods. The system is the latest onslaught of severe weather a day after a half-mile-wide tornado carved an 80-mile path of destruction through the suburbs of Little Rock, Ark., killing at least 15. Tornadoes also killed one person each in Oklahoma and Iowa on Sunday. Elsewhere, forecasters warned Georgia residents of a threat of tornadoes in northern and central counties in coming hours.

(Rhyann Lee)Lupita Nyong’o named People’s most beautiful person of 2014

Summary: Lupita Nyong’o is having quite the ride.
The “12 Years a Slave” actress has won an Oscar for best supporting actress, signed a deal with cosmetics giant Lancôme to become its first black ambassador, and now People magazine has bestowed one of its highest honors on her – “Most Beautiful person for 2014.”The Mexican-born Kenyan beauty joins a cast of Hollywood A-listers who have headed the list, including Julia Roberts, Cindy Crawford, Tom Cruise and Beyonce. This year she topped others on the list including “The Americans” star Keri Russell, singer Pink and Johnny Depp’s future wife, actress Amber Heard.
“I remember a time when I too felt unbeautiful,” she said. “I put on the TV and only saw pale skin. I got teased and taunted about my night-shaded skin.”
The actress told “Today’s” Savannah Guthrie that she was moved by People naming her the most beautiful.
“I’m flattered, but flattered sounds like such a flighty word, you know? I’m flattered with, like, gravitas under it,” she said.
This year’s most beautiful cover issue is the 25th annual for People magazine. The first honor went to actress Michelle Pfeiffer in 1990, and last year’s most beautiful person was Gwyneth Paltrow.

analysis: I think is great for Lupita. even though I don't know her personally she seems like a down to earth woman who can inspire many. Also very talented I loved her role in 12 years a slave. Graduation Rates Increase to 80% - Emily Gray -5th period

The United States graduation rate hit a new high at 80 percent for the 2011-2012 school year. Last year it was 79 percent. The Obama administration has credited the Race to the Top program for this achievement. Increased focus on teacher factors and other qualities has contributed to this success.

This article was written by Elvina Nawaguna on April, 28 by Yahoo! News. This article is very encouraging to future students in the United States. The percentage rate has been increasing every year and soon it will be very high. With this increase we have more educated people and more citizens that can withstand a decent paying job. We will have more people with a chance to do something with their lives when they graduate from high school.

McKenzie Hartmann - West Nile Vaccine - 4th period

So this article is essentially about a new west nile vaccine that scientists are hoping to have administered by May.  The vaccine, which has thus far been tested on adults 18 through 50 and proved to be innocuous with no lasting effects.  The disease, which first appeared in the United States in 1999 has caused as many as 3 million infections.  There is currently no cure, preventative measures or even proven treatment for an infected person.  Though there are personal measure one can take such as wearing sun screen.  As summer approaches, it is important to be cautious of all the potential dangers this fatal illness could bring.

I think it's great that a vaccine is being developed and is moving forward in the testing process.  This is a really dangerous illness that I think is so often overlooked or belittled.  I have known three people infected and one of them was in a coma for 4 months due to the neurological effects.  The scientists are now performing tests on older members of the community, though if the results continue to remain positive, researchers will have made a huge step forward in combatting this disease.

Claire Zimmerman: A Rather GRIMM Report

Michael Grimm, a republican congressman, has been accused of fraud involving a health food restaurant he used to co-own. He said he sold it, however, there is proof he was lying, and that they also hid receipts and other things. This is not the first time Grimm has been infamous in the eyes of the news. He once threatened to throw a reporter off of a balcony, and this incident has been caught on camera. Though he was not charged for that, it seems that the fraud with the health food store, Healthilicious, will get him at least twenty years in jail, if convicted.

Isn't this man a charmer? Fraud and abuse? Sign me up. But actually, this man seems to lean more towards the line of insanity on the spectrum of sanity. It's sad that the people who seem to join Congress are all the people out for personal gain. If our government was made up of people who genuinely love our country, then perhaps our country would not be having as many problems as it is. It genuinely surprised me to figure out that people used to trust our government. It is hard for me, personally, to believe anything any politician says. They have the sad, accurate stereotype of being liars and cheats. Not to say this is all of them, but sadly, it is a lot. And any is too many. I hope this man gets convicted to teach him he can't get away with things simply because he works in the government.

"Boys Make a Splash at Talent Show With Synchronized Air Swimming" - Natalie H. - Class 2

Synchronized swimming never looked so good....out of water. This article was featured on ABC news six hours ago today (4/28/14).

Apparently a couple of fifth grade  boys put together a little act for a talent show at their school. Although the auditorium doesn't have a pool, the guys still did the routine, and it was actually pretty cute. Before you know it they'll be winning gold at the Olympics.

Killed on prom day: Joan Milburn pd. 1

http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/us/2014/04/26/valencia-ct-teen-killed.cnn.html

On the night of her junior prom, what is supposed to be a special day, 16-year old honor student Maren Sanchez was brutally slashed in the stairway at her school. The teachers and first responders tried to save her life but she was pronounced dead shortly after the attack. A knife was found at the scene and the alleged killer is being held at a mental facility. It is a suspicion that he killed Maren because she refused his invitation to the prom.

Response
This is so sad. Especially with prom being right around the corner for us booker t students. It is so upsetting that this poor student was senselessly killed on the day of the prom. It would be even more tragic if this student decided to kill his classmate just because she denied him accompaniment to the prom. I hope he faces the right consequences because this crime CANNOT go unpunished

Coffee May Reduce Risk for Type 2 Diabetes by: Taylor Grant-Gates

So apparently this isn't anything new. There have been tests done before that have shown that drinking a few more cups of your morning Joe will lower your risk of type 2 diabetes. Now the question that is being posed is, " What if you decrease or increase the amount of coffee you consume over time, what will happen then?'' The results: Those who added one more cup of coffee to their daily lives had a 11% lower risk of getting Type 2 Diabetes, and those who decreased their intake by one cup a day had a 17% increased risk of getting Type 2 Diabetes. "As long as coffee doesn't give you tremors, doesn't make you jittery, it is associated with a lot of health benefits." says  Shilpa Bhupathiraju a research fellow at Harvard's School of Public Health. Research also states that coffee is linked to longer life. BUT WAIT!!! Lattes and other specialty drinks laced with sugar were not tested in this experiment, only black coffee with 100mg of caffeine.

This is very interesting. Its cool to see that something that is so common can actually help us health wise. Unfortunately, I only drink Frappuccinos, Lattes, and Iced coffees that have a lot of sugar in them. And, I don't think that I would be able to drink more than 1.5 cups a day, I definitely would not be able to increase anything.

Feminism is the reason patriarchy still exists. Sam Smathers 4th

“Women Wear Too Much Makeup Because They Mistakenly Think Men Like It”
By: Olga Khazan from the Atlantic
Commentary by: Sam Smathers

This article is about how women think that wearing a lot of makeup is attractive. The author conducted a study where she gathered a group of women off of the street and took a photo of them with no makeup and then a photo of them after they had applied the amount of makeup that they would wear to go out in. Then she presented the photos to men and women and asked them what photo was more attractive, and what photo they think other men and women would prefer. The general conclusion that was made was that women wear too much makeup, and that neither men nor women find “full makeup” to be all that attractive.
I think that women that dress for men have it all wrong. Guys generally don’t really care about what you wear as long as you look nice. Girls judge what you wear hard core all the time, girls judge your makeup and your hair; you are kidding yourself if you wear makeup for boys. Honestly I think women endorse patriarchy more than guys do, we endorse the image that we hate. We all go on diets and run because we want to look like this ideal girl. In public we claim to hate the idea that we have to look like X, but behind closed doors we all do crunches and eat salad. The problem isn’t that women wear too much makeup; it is that the counterculture, the feminists, doesn’t actually want equality. Their whole existence depends on the sustaining of the system they wish to abolish. Feminists wouldn’t know what to do with themselves if they weren’t being subjugated, and that is why they wear makeup. Without the conflict of subjugation there would be no battle, therefore, in short, their whole existence depends on women wearing makeup. In conclusion, women still wear makeup because we subconsciously want to endorse a system that has been in place since the beginnings of society, and because we think that it makes us look pretty. And when you look at this whole issue from a wholesome perspective, the problem isn’t makeup it all, it is feminists, and all other leftist movements.

3 escape burning Oak Cliff home - Hannah Selby 4th

In the middle of the night yesterday, at about 1:00 a.m., a big fire burned a one-story house in east Oak Cliff to the ground.  At the time of the fire, three adults were in the house playing dominos.  Thankfully they all escaped without injury.  One of the three, Demetria Walker, stated that they evacuated the house without hesitating to do anything else. "I don't even have a pair of shoes right now," she said. "My ID, everything was in there." The victims are being helped by the  American Red Cross for housing for the time being. When investigations were made, they concurred that the fire was caused by an electrical problem - likely from a window air conditioning unit.
