We've been doing accessibility backwards, shame on us (Sydney c 5th)

So wheelchair ramps are decidedly great, and it's great that more are popping up in public places.  However, this new wheel technology might be even more great for the disabled, because with it, they may no longer need those ramps.
An Israeli-based company has recently created prototypes of wheels that go on stairs, using what looks like a stretchy triangle in the middle to absorb shock.  The design is compatible with existing wheelchair designs, as well as bicycle frames.

Which is really amazing.  Because though ramps are more common now, they aren't everywhere, and independence is always nice.  Tel-Aviv hopes to produce the "Softwheel" by next year.

I think that this is great, and I hope it works well in use.

  1. That is amazing! Though it's kind of funny how part of the solution is something as simple as putting a triangle design in the center of the wheel. So simple, yet effective.

  2. Byron Otis- That is fantastic! I have always been fascinated by wheelchairs, and this made them even cooler. Now I'm just worried that they'll run over innocent stair-walkers

  3. This is so cool! What a great invention. Now we just need an invention like this for going up stairs.
