Episcopal Church installs its first African-American leader" - Leah Messinger (period1)

This weekend The Episcopal Church will install Bishop Michael Curry as their first African-American leader. A formal ceremony will be held on Sunday at the Washington National Cathedral and it will be a monumental moment in addressing the church's racist history. Curry, born in Chicago and growing up in Buffalo N.Y, had strong religious roots from the beginning. He is stepping into the position at a time of tension regarding gay rights and also when fewer and fewer Americans are associated with a church at all. Curry hopes to be honest about the church's history, embrace it, and move forward having learned from it. He also wants to help "raise our visibility in positive and genuine ways" and persuade Episcopalians to "take evangelism seriously."
Although discrimination and equality was settled a long time ago, we still have remnants of racism and stereotypes today. It is alarming that we are just now having our first African-American president, and that we still have yet to have a woman in office. However, it is certainly a huge step in the right direction to have Curry be installed into such a high position in the Episcopal church. It just shows how much the times have changed and that our society is evolving into a more accepting and loving place. The most important fact is having the right person for the job no matter their skin color. This all sounds cliche, however, it took a very long time for people to understand this and put it into action. The more small steps in history that are taken will lead us to an even more unified nation.

Delaware Pardons Man who Guided Slaves to Freedom--Rebecca Brandt 4th Period

Governor of Delaware, Jack Markell, is prepared to pardon Samuel D. Burris, a free black man and underground railroad conductor, who was convicted of helping slaves escape to freedom in the 1840s. Ocea Thomas, ancestor of Burris, wrote many letters to Jack Markell convincing him to pardon Burris. Burris, just as Martin Luther King Jr. wrote over a century later, wrote a powerful letter against racial injustice from Dover jail. It was published in the 1848 edition of "The Liberator". Burris is considered a hero. He risked his life to save and free many black slaves. When he was discovered of aiding slaves, he was sold into slavery for 14 years. Coincidentally, or maybe not, he was purchased by a white abolitionist who posed as a slaveholder. The abolitionist sent Burris back to his family in Philadelphia. He then returned to Delaware and continued to conduct the underground railroad. Governor Markell said pardons usually are very rare and this is a special ocassion. Burris was a hero who risked his life for others.

It is amazing to hear about influential people like Burris. I don't think he has gotten enough recognition. Everyone in America pretty much knows who Martin Luther King Jr. is. Even if they have not learned about him, they still know in general. I, however, have never heard of Samuel Burris. The fact that he went back to the underground railroad after being convicted and sold into slavery just shows how much he cares about other people. He has been a huge influence on the world and slavery and I really think that he should be talked about more in America.

China "cult" leader in prison for life -Julianne Swaykus

Wu Zeheng was charged with rape and fraud in the court in the southern province of Guangdong on Friday. He is believed to be the founder and leader of a Buddhist-inspired Huazang Dharma and was fined 7.15 million yuan ($1.13 million). "Xinhua previously reported that Wu had already been jailed at least twice, and set up his group in 2010 upon his last release from jail." Authorities say that cults have multiplied over the years and have been trying to put them down with force.
This case singularly is not a huge threat, but they mentioned that cults are multiplying in China. Cults are a huge problem that need a lot of attention before they get out of hand. Who knows what some of these cults are up to, and we need to address this before it escalates and becomes an even bigger issue.

storms flood the East Coast- Katie Schell (flex)

original: updated Wednesday October 7, 2015

Over the past couple of days major storms have been hitting the east coast of the U.S. Parts of the storms have even moved towards the mid part of the U.S. As a result thousands of people have been affected by the flash floods and sweeping waters. In the article I reference for this blog it states many places where the water damage has been hazard-es but to me what place seemed to have the most drastic affect caused by water was in South Carolina. 24 out of the 37 images in the original article capture events in South Carolina after the rain hits. There are pictures of people being rescued, cars completely sunk under water, and houses after they were ripped apart by the floods.

Last night I took a drive around White Rock Lake. There were many parts of the road(s) that were submerged under excess water from the lake. It was scary to drive through those trenches of water, and this isn't even a fraction of what the people on the east coast are dealing with. Floods have occurred thousands of times throughout history but during this decade there has been a dramatic rise in the amounts of large tropical storms all over the world. Every one has different theories: global warming, polar ice caps melting, pure coincidence, but in my opinion the reason doesn't really matter in the point I'm trying to make. The purpose of me writing about this is to let people know that there are hundreds of families that don't have a home right now. Kids that can't find their parents. People that are dead. When a disaster like this happens it is so important that we, as a nation, come together and help those that have been affected. Just think if something like this happened in our region of the U.S. Wouldn't you want someone to help and care for your safety as well?

Sam Nester:Isis video shows beheading of Kurdish fighters in Iraq

Earlier this week, a video was released that showed Isis members executing 4 Kurdish fighters in Iraq. At the end of the video, a masked English speaking man issues a warning to president Obama. Earlier in the video, the aftermath of a raid that freed 70 hostages.
I think this shows that we should be taking Isis seriously instead of worrying about climate control. Isis is an immenent threat, and if they manage to obtain some form of nuclear weaponry, America would most likely be their first target. They have been showing up a lot recently, and it's time to put a stop to their rampage. If we don't stop them, they could potentially destroy the US. It's ridiculous that the government still sees climate control as a bigger threat than Isis. Our ancestors have fought to keep this country alive for so long, and it would be a waste to let it go now.

Development on Biker Shootout// Arianna Sotero 1st period

Summary: About 5 months ago in Waco, Texas, a corral style shoot-out between two biker gangs occurred inside a Twin Peaks restaurant. Security video footage, interviews from witnesses, and crime scene pictures have been released recently, revealing new details about the violent episode between the Bandidos and the Cossacks. These new photos show the graphic aftermath: a parking lots littered with guns, knives, blood, and bodies. A court document also shows that there were 480 weapons were found on site that day. Also, 177 arrests were made. Today, not one of these bikers that was arrested remains in jail and not one has been charged with murder. It is also unknown, even with the footage, which gang fired the first shot.
Analysis: Before this article, I had already heard about this incident that occurred between the two gangs. It was scary to hear about since this event since it was so local. This article had no specific audience, but I feel that it a possible negative impact on it's reader. No arrests have been made for any of these bikers arrested, so these murderers are just going about their daily lives again. I do understand that most of these bikers were innocent, but the ones who did commit the crime need to not only pay the price, but do the time. This all goes back to our "right to bear arms". We need to consider this incident when we think about gun control in America.

Oregon public health officials say teen girl has bubonic plague

Oregon public health officials say teen girl has bubonic plague

On October 16th, a teen girl went on a hunting trip near Heppner, a small little city Oregon. When she was on this hunting trip she was bit by a flea. Five days from when she was bit, she became ill. The bite had effected her horribly and resulted with her receiving the Bubonic Plague! Yes she is hospitalized because she went there there days after she was bit. Her condition currently is under investigation, but what they do know is she is in ICU awaiting more tests.

Analysis: The Bubonic Plague can be deadly if not caught early enough. The Bubonic Plague was more common in the early years and is very rare now days. It is carried by squirrels, fleas, chipmunks etc. When the animal dies it's fleas can carry the disease by biting humans or other animals! This is just one person getting it, so it's not so severe right now with it spreading to others, but anyone can get bit by a random flea that was carrying the disease!

World Series Game 2

Wednesday night was the second game of the 2015 World Series in Kansas City, Missouri. As two ambitious teams, New York Mets and Kansas City Royals, battled on the field. Through an intense game Kansas City earned the victory with a score 7-1.
It is important to be aware of the fundamentals of America. Baseball is in fact America's Favorite Pastime", it is events like the World Series unites complete strangers in America to root for a team. One simple thing can unite several people, similarly seen in Women's suffrage movement a topic that in fact united women across America for fundamentals.

Layla Maynard (late): It All Comes Back To The School Shootings

Summary: A recent school incident has opened the eyes of many, not only in South Carolina, but across the nation. A high school student refused to turn over her cellphone in class last Wednesday, and faced rather cruel or unusual punishments. One of the school's deputy officers was called into class to deal with a situation. We see in digital recordings of the incident, that deputy was seeing using an excessive amount of force, furthermore putting the student at risk.

Analysis: We recognize that the safety of the children is at the top of our list. Especially since so many school shootings have been performed, we see as a society how big of an issue this pic is. However, we must know WHO we are chasing to protect our kids. Obviously, this officer is exactly not we are looking for, so we have to be aware of who is presented before us, and if they are necessary.

Spring Valley High School- Bella Morris, 5th period

A few days ago, an incident at Spring Valley High School and South Carolina occurred when a police officer walked into a classroom and pull a student by the hair onto the ground and proceeded to drag the student across the floor of the classroom. When watching too brutal video, you can clearly see how uncomfortable all the other student’s in the classroom are. It shows that people are now afraid to speak up to a police officer because of the amount of police brutality that has occurred. Actions were taken to make sure that the officer was fired from his duty. When is enough, enough? There is a new story every week on police brutality and it needs to end now. This article relates back in history when african americans were made fun of via Minstrel theatre, with performances of black face in a comedic way. The way that people treat other people can be very disturbing… This shows that it is still present today.

Footage of mistreated black high school girl by white deputy, investigation...pending?-Eleni Loving p.1

On October 27, 2015 multiple videos were published on social media sites taken from students' phones from South Carolina's Spring Valley High School. The video showed a black teenage girl refusing an officer's wishes from standing and leaving her math class, after being caught with her cell phone. The video shows the white officer deputy, Ben Fields, tipping her desk backwards while dragging her out of her seat to the front of the class, and handcuffing her. The deputy's superior, Sheriff Lott was deflecting questions, but vaguely stated that he was reviewing the deputy's actions. Fields has had two offenses prior to this one which the jury found in favor of fields and the other, pending.

This is unacceptable and quite honestly makes me ashamed that I live in a country that tolerates any part of this. It's crazy for me to think of how all of these similar cases are aligned quite perfectly, which makes it even harder for me to fathom the inaction of the trainers of the officers. We should feel safe by them, not afraid for our lives and families. This case and entire topic is repeating from the entire civil rights era. Where black people of all ages were fighting for their god given rights as human beings pretty much all throughout history.

"Officer Ben Fields Fired for Violent Arrest of a Student" by Jack Higgins Period 6

In a sort-of continuation of what I posted for the last blog, police officer Ben Fields of Spring Valley High School in Richland, South Carolina has been fired for his violent assault of an African-American female student (who is 16 years old, so her name has not been released). Technically, the assault was an arrest, but when arresting a high school student who has not been accused of any real problem (talking on her phone during class and refusing to leave) and then is showing only slight non-violent resistance to the officer, you don't grab her by the throat, choke her while flipping her desk (with her still in it) upside down, and dragging her across the room by her hair before punching her and sticking her in handcuffs on the floor. A humiliating experience for the young woman because this likely high-school-bully-who-never-matured decided it would be okay to treat her like this, not knowing that students had been filming the events on their phones.
It is very fortunate that at least one officer who as committed a violent assault on a minor (the violence may very well have been racially motivated) has had to face at least some consequences for his unjustifiable actions.

1,300 Surgery Patients Exposed to Bacterial Infection by Calen C. Smith

A Pennsylvania hospital said Monday that it will be telling about 1300 patients that they may have been exposed to a bacterial infection (nontuberculosis mycobacterium or NTM) during open heart surgery after identifying 8 patients who contracted the infection, four of which died. The Centers for Disease Control and prevention did not rule the infection the cause of the four deaths because those patients had underlying medicals conditions. However, the hospital is acknowledging the infection as a possible factor in the deaths. NTM is a natural bacteria that occurs in soil and water, and can sometimes be found in tap water. Humans become infected by inhaling the bacteria.

The hospital will be contacting all patients that underwent open heart surgery between October 1, 2011 and July 24, 2015. According to a news release only the people who went through the surgery are thought to be at risk. No physicians, staff, or any patients with noninvasive heart procedures are thought to be at risk.

I believe that this type of thing should not be happening. It shows carelessness on the people who work in the hospital, especially the ones who are supposed to be cleaning and making sure everything is sterile. I think that some procedure should be implemented to make sure that everything in the Cardio ward, as well as the other wards are safe because it isn't fair to the patients from years back even to now.

Police officer at Spring Valley High School suspended after classroom arrest- by Bob Cummins

Synopsis:  On Monday at Spring Valley High School in Richland, SC, Deputy Ben Fields was suspended without pay for violently arresting a student in class.  A video by another student in the classroom shows Fields putting his arms near her neck, yanking her, and slamming her to the ground.  He then proceeds to drag her across the floor.  The student in question had been disrupting the class and was told to leave many times.  According to Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, "it started with her and it ended with my officer."  He's been receiving countless pieces of criticism because of his escalation of the situation instead of trying to calm it.  Analyst Harry Houck argues that the officer was within his rights, using force to get the job done, but he brings up the point that it's not the cop's job to control disruptive students.  It's their job to defend the school from criminals.  There are staff members whose specialty is to deal with disruptive students.  Policemen shouldn't be put into the equation in the first place.  The story is also getting much coverage because Fields is white and the student he arrested is black.  With all of the recent occurrences of racially charged police brutality, this story is prevalent.

Analysis:  Even though the cop is technically within his rights, this brutality was completely unnecessary to the situation at hand, and he didn't need to be there in the first place.  His way of handling the situation was contrary to what he should have done, calm the situation.  Richland schools are talking about teaching their staff about how to deal with these kinds of situations without being violent.  The question many are asking is if this is a race issue or not.  With these past occurrences of racial brutality, there's a chance it could be.  Things have come a long way in the United States as far as prejudice goes since the beginning of the nation and the civil war, even since Martin Luther King Jr, but we still aren't completely harmonious, as far as blacks and whites are concerned.  There will always be prejudices between people of different races, classes, lifestyles, and backgrounds, but it's always a good goal to try to eliminate them.

U.N. Rejects U.S. embargo on Cuba//Maddie Hanratty

Cuba proposed a resolution to the U.S. embargo, which was denied by the U.S.. However, not all hope is lost for Cuba; the vote came to 188:2 when cast worldwide. Israel was the only one to agree with America that the embargo should be kept (hence the pathetically small 2 in the ratio). Since then, the countries have reopened embassies and restored diplomacy all while limiting trade and leisurely travel.
In my opinion, the embargo isn't needed anymore for the same reasons it once was. Although I am not fully educated on the topic, from my understanding, the embargo was passed during the Cold War when Cuba was going through a missile crisis. The crisis held potential danger to the U.S., and therefore the embargo was passed. Now, the crisis is not an issue, yet the embargo goes on. I think the embargo is pointless now because Cuba is insufficiently supplied in a broad sense. For example, the people there have to be mechanically talented just to repair old cars, as new imports are harder to come by. Without Cubans having the technologies many of us use daily, it would be plausible to assume Cuba is no longer a threat as far as weaponry.
This embargo not only relates to the Cold War as I mentioned earlier, but also reflects the Embargo Act of 1807. This was an end of trade to all other countries that was meant to entice Britain into lifting restrictions on American trade. Unfortunately for Americans, the act only made the economy worse much like Cuba is suffering currently.

Hurricane- Eva Semrad

Recently a massive hurricane landed in Mexico, displacing thousands. The storm is a category 5, one of the largest storms ever recorded in the western hemisphere. What's different about the storm is, yes, that it is a category 5, but it also came from the west. Usually, hurricanes come from the east, affecting the east. Many attribute this to be caused by El Nino.

Many new settelers were unaccustomed to hurricanes prior to coming to America. Hurricanes were never in Europe, but primarily in sea near Japan and China, South India, and parts of the lower hemisphere. The most frequented site for hurricanes are near the Gulf of Mexico, which is surrounded by mainland coasts and islands. This affects many more people than a hurricane or cyclone in an ocean.

Will hacking nature protect us from climate change?

Engineers have recently been working on a new technology that could help reduce the amount of pollution in our air. Plants already absorb CO2 but they don't absorb it enough at the rate we're producing it.

Ever since the industrial revolution, there's been pollution everywhere, it even changed a whole species of insect because of all the pollution. So engineers have been working on machines that can absorb the excess carbon in our atmosphere and alter global warming. This technology is being worked on at ASU, a college in Los Angeles.
This technology has been created, but sadly there are huge problems that come with it.

- the material is too expensive to be able to make it in mass amounts

- it also creates a logistic problem: "where will it go?"

The idea is great but the problems are too big for the world to use the idea.

Donald Trump on poll slump: 'I don't get it'

Donald Trump recently has had a drop in polls because of his attacks on Carson. He says "I'm going there (to Iowa) actually today and I have tremendous crowds and I have tremendous love in the room and, you know, we seem to have hit a chord. But some of these polls coming out, I don't quite get it. "

He only attacks and complains and doesn't really address real issues in the gov. He's losing numbers in the poll, and front runner right now for the 2016 presidency is Ben Carson.

Trump says this guy's ideas are pretty contradictory which would make sense, since he's gotta please the public for votes'. Subjects such as abortion, and the program medicare being cancelled.

Palestinian woman shot dead; Israelis say she was armed, witness disputes it

In this article, it talks about the disputes between a girl whom the border patrol people (for a checkpoint) called "women" they where checking her and where asking her questions about her bag and "knife" which she wasn't wielding. The officers kept pursuing the idea sthat she had knife but both hands where raised and she was very scared too. They shot at her 8 times with the notion she had a "knife", she died shortly after. The disputes between israelis and palestinian have been going on for years and recently, incidents like this connects to police brutality here in america, with that in mind the gov. will probably dismiss the case.

"Political Lies About Police Brutality" Julia Plummer pd 1

Source article here

In this day and age, it's so easy to record any moment in time by simply pressing a button on your cell phone. Recently, this has helped the Black Lives Matter movement, by allowing people to broadcast a lot of the police brutality towards black people that is very present in everyone's life. But, even though a lot of this violence and hate has been recorded, officials still disregard the evidence and do nothing to bring justice to people affected by these actions.

Now, of course it's not every police officer that is racist, but that's not the point. There is so much hate and prejudice from people who are supposed to be protecting our society, that it's caused a great uprising and movement for change, that has helped a lot, but there's still a very long way to go before everyone realizes that black lives truly matter, the hate ends, and we can live in a world where other people's cultures are protected and admired, instead of looked down upon and appropriated.

U.S. ship passes island in South China Sea; Lauren Bush

Link: http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/27/asia/us-china-south-china-sea/index.html

On Tuesday, China was concerned over the presence of a U.S. navy warship near one of China’s artificial islands in the South China Sea. China's Foreign Ministry stated that the ship "illegally entered into the waters of China's Spratly Islands…The action taken by the U.S. warship has threatened China's sovereignty and security interest, and has put the safety of personnel on the reefs in danger.”
U.S. defense officials said that the U.S. doesn't recognize the artificial islands as Chinese sovereign territory, so they say operation didn't offend any boundaries, and that thy have the right to navigate through those waters.
The South China Sea holds many unsettled territorial claims; these include China, Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam. But in the past 18 months, China has reclaimed Subi, Mischief and Fiery Cross reefs of the Spratly Islands. Here, they have built airstrips capable of handling bombers.
This isn't the first time a conflict has risen between the U.S. and China over the freedom of navigation in these waters. In May, a U.S. surveillance plane flew over the Spratly Islands, which China viewed as a threat. ”China is resolutely opposed to any country damaging China's sovereignty and security interest in the name of freedom of navigation and overflight.”
Yoshihide Suga, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, said "it was extremely important that the international community work together in order to protect open, free and peaceful ocean.” Australia also supports the rights of all countries to travel through the South China Sea.

I’m questioning if this is really about the U.S.’s right to travel through the South China Sea or if we’re concerned about the potential bomber-airstrips. The U.S. has been fighting strongly for their rights throughout history. This can be seen in the War of 1812, the Civil War, and many other examples. But do the same principles that motivated those movements apply to this situation as well?

The US sent a naval destroyer within 12 nautical miles of a Chinese artificial island in the South China Sea -Matthew Taylor

 (Your reading music)

In recent months, China has been building artificial islands and claiming the area surrounding them as Chinese territory. This has elevated tensions in the South China Sea, which is widely considered international water.
Today, the US sent the USS Lassen into waters claimed by China as a demonstration that ships may pass freely under UN law. The destroyer was also accompanied by two surveillance planes. For now, it seems like the event went by without conflict, but tensions with China remain high. In the last few weeks, the USS Lassen and Chinese ships have had encounters where both parties engage in "aggressive naval maneuvers," although there was no fighting.
Over the last year, China has become increasingly assertive along the Pacific, which has caused worry among allies of the US. Japan's ability to mobilize it's military was reinstated for the first time in 70 years amid China's expansion into the South China Sea.
Chinese state media claims that the US is acting provocative and hostile, while the US is literally enforcing the law that prohibits artificial expansion of territory.

Russia and China sure are causing some headaches. Their "professional internet trolls" are swarming article comment sections, which is always annoying. China's counterarguments are as half-baked as ever, and they're generally making my day worse every time I read the news. (Not to mention the government censorship/cyberattacks) If we're going to get to Mars someday, we'll need China's help and democratic vote. What's worse, is that these current events aren't reported on as much as Kim Kardashian's new dog. WHOSE IDEA WAS IT TO HAVE A NEWS SEGMENT DEDICATED TO SOCIAL MEDIA, ANYWAY?

Marijuana Tunnel Found, Good or Bad for the U.S.? - Juliet Nelson 9

Recently a tunnel was found in San Diego California that was connected to drug smuggling. The elaborate tunnel was equipped with lighting, electricity, a railway system, and beams made of metal to prevent cave-ins. 6 million dollars worth of marijuana, 12 tons, was confiscated form these tunnels and over 20 were arrested. This bust was a part of a 6 month undercover investigation, resulting in a shut down of the tenth biggest drug tunnel found in San Diego since 2006. Thankfully the tunnel was shut down in time on Wednesday and hopefully the U.S. government will be able to control this more.

While it sucks that there was a tunnel with 12 tons of weed in it, maybe it’s a wake up call the United States to step up it’s game a little bit. Now that can go two ways, both can sound drastic. The government either needs to find a way to shut down every tunnel so this isn’t a problem, which sounds hard, or they could legalize weed and be able to make a profit off of it. I don’t smoke but I also don’t think that it’s fair to have marijuana be illegal. If the U.S. was able to capitalize off of the selling of weed it would help our debt issues and no one will want to buy illegal weed when they can get it perfectly legally. Just with any other import or export there does need to be regulations, obviously, but legalizing weed could very possible help America. It’s working in Colorado and it can work everywhere else too.

Adriana Hinojosa, 8th period, Tragic Story of a Mother

26 year old Kimberly Pappas was arrested today in Detroit for the murder of her newborn baby. Whenever I read news like this I can't help but cringe but I also don't like to be too quick to judge when I don't know the exact situation. Nothing justifies putting your newborn baby in a plastic bag until it suffocates. I do feel bad for Kimberly, though. I don't feel bad for what happened to her but instead her mental state. She has shown much regret and agony through the media. Something has to be seriously off in your brain if you feel no remorse while watching this baby die in the moment, though. It's not like it happened instantaneously. I personally couldn't see myself getting an abortion, that being said, I am not against them, you do you. But I would much rather a girl in a situation like this of not wanting a child or whatever her reasoning was to get an abortion. In the article it also talks about how she denied her pregnancy to people. This is the weird part. Because now that we know that she did in fact end the life of her newborn, did she have this planned all along? Why didn't she admit her being pregnant? The state of Texas just recently made the decision to defund Planned Parenthood. Whenever I think about girls like Kimberly who maybe needed an abortion but couldn't get ahold of a safe one is when I get seriously angered by decisions like that of defunding Planned Parenthood. The baby was found on her desk in her work building which was the same place where she gave birth. The fact that she birthed this baby in her work building is another mystery. This to me shows that maybe her life had not really been in order and the arrival of this baby was not a conventional, happy one. I hope that she may repent and be able to go on with her life, hopefully she may learn from this.

This week in Huston, Texas a high school student found his history textbook referring to slaves as “workers”. The student’s mom, Roni Dean-Burren, has sparked a national conversion on the review of these textbooks and how they discuss tough subjects. “That word-‘workers’-was an attempt to erase that hard writing that slavery had on paper” Thomas Ratliff, vice chair of the Texas board of education, agrees this should have never happened and what stop ensure it will never happen again. Texas is modifying the textbook review process by adding more diversity to reviews and editors.
This is similar to integration of schools in the 1950s. Black students where integrated into white schools after the court ruled segregation unconstitutional

in the brown vs. boards of education case. These students had to be escorted to school with by the military for there safety. This shows that our country has over come a lot of race base issues but still has along way to go.

Ben Carson compares abortion to slaver Jasmine Rodriguez Period 4

This article is about a retired neurosurgeon (Ben Carson) who wants to make abortion illegal in all incidences, including rape. He makes his point by comparing women who seek abortion to slave-holders. He refers to the ideology of slaveholder's in the past (they thought that they had the right to do whatever they wanted to the slaves without regard to what the slave wanted) and compares it to that of a women who wishes to abort. He feels that the women should not just be able to kill the baby's life just because she feels like that. His political comments have resulted in outrage from the public, especially after his earlier claims of "gay is a choice", "Muslims aren't qualified to seek U.S. Presidency" and more.

This article relates to slavery and the abolitionist movement. By comparing abortion to slavery, Ben Carson brings back up the topic of slavery and why it was a major issue in history. Southerners used to own slaves and felt that they had some sort of entitlement to do whatever they wanted with them for their own benefit. The abolitionist movement was the fight to end slavery, and by making abortion illegal, Ben Carson feels that he is continuing the ideology of the abolitionist movement. I do not agree with his political messages, and I think his previous claims make his current ones  even more invalid.

MEAT AND CANCER? Julia Woltjen (3rd period)

SUMMARY: Recently there was a list released by WHO, that shows a small list of meats that cause cancer almost as much as asbestos and smoking. These meats including bacon and sausage.

ANALYSIS: This summary may be short, but this story doesn't need a lot to describe it. The world as we know it is ending if bacon causes cancer. Ok I had my dramatic moment, now we can talk about the fact that this processed meat is now linked with deadly forms of cancer. Many vegetarians are being very cocky on social media now because they have some fire power behind the meat hating and their practice. I am very conflicted about this issue and don't know what to do. Bacon is my favorite meat of all time. I believe this social issue is one of the utmost importance, and should be discussed immediately.

student's violent arrest caught on video-Molly Mitchell 5th period

Summary:

In a school in South Carolina a video was shot by a student of a police officer walking into a classroom, walking up to a female african american student, and ripping said student out of her chair throwing her across the room onto the floor as if she has committed some sort of crime. Although it is not known what could've specifically led to this incident, the girl was apparently told to leave the classroom, and when she did not comply officer Ben Fields stepped in. She is thrown across the room and told repeatedly to put her hands behind her back by the officer, force that is normally used when confronting criminals, not rebellious high schoolers. Investigation of the assault is going on, and the video has gone viral, receiving many differentiating responses on how the situation should've been handled, and if we should pay closer attention to cases such as this.

Analysis:

This video is disturbing to say the least, to see an officer barge into a room and shove a girl onto the ground like that is bone chilling, no matter what she did she deserves some sort of respect. She's just a kid, probably not much older than me, and being treated like she just pulled a gun on someone. Whether this has to do with racism or not(though with cases like these just starting to finally get some news recognition we could maybe make an assumption that it might here) this video showcases that for some people, just being a teenager is crime enough, though correct me if I'm getting ahead of myself.

REI closes stores on black friday by Eleanor E-W

REI, a popular store selling outdoorsy stuff, declared that it will no longer be open on black friday. Instead, they are closing their doors and paying their employees to not come in, and encouraging customers trying to shop online to go outside. REI believes that doing this is a better move in terms of commitment to their members and loyal shoppers, and that all the black friday stuff has just gotten to be too much.
I couldn't agree more with REI! Historically, black friday wasn't always such a huge shopping "holiday" but in the last ten or fifteen years, the culture around black friday has begun to shift--turning into a huge consumeristic holiday. Personally, I think REI is doing the right thing by encouraging going outdoors (what their business is founded on) instead of excessive shopping, and hopefully, they'll set an example for other companies to follow.

Adriana Hinojosa 8th period, It's Never Too Late

So, a man in Alabama turned in a library book 63 years late. I love this guy. This is totally something I would do. I mean, this blog post is a week late. Maybe I shouldn't have said that. Mrs. Countryman, if you're reading, sorry. I lead a busy life. Anyway, this Bobby Rice character did not just return this overdue book to any library, no, but to his old high school library. I currently have like 6 books checked out at this school, actually, so Mr. Pendleton, I apologize if you are reading this. I even took one of them to the Grand Canyon, actually, and got rock on it, a li'l canyon.

When they released the name of the book he returned I naturally did my research. The book he was returning was Lydia Bailey which is a book that is written by Kenneth Roberts. Kenneth Roberts was an American writer born in Maine. A state that is often confused to be one of the 13 colonies, but wasn't.

Judge Dismisses Jury For Being Almost Completely White, Emir Price, 9th

Y'all don't understand how hype I am on this.

So some time during the week before last, this judge from Lousiville Olu Stevens, dismisses a jury of forty-one for including only one black person. He reasoned that the jury was not one of the defendant's own peers and needed to be fixed, and boy was he right. Now, he's getting attention from the Supreme Court on whether or not he's using his power excessively.

Now some of y'all might think, "Uhmmmm liikeee, yeah, that judge is totes ma gotes abusing his power, like, ttyl" or however y'all talk, but I know some of you don't understand the nature of the All White Jury.

The All White Jury has been the bane of many young black people's lives and careers for as long as they decided black people finally had the right to even be represented in court. Well, just cause black folks finally got "fair trials" that would supposedly keep them from being oppressed, at least from a legal standpoint, doesn't mean there isn't a white man somewhere that knows his way around a loophole. That's when he thought of the All White Jury. The All White Jury is a clever legal tactic that works wonders for incarcerating black people because of three key factors: 1. Some of the white people on the All White Jury genuinely have no idea how black people's lives are, so they make quick decisions assuming black people must be living the same as they are because they're equal enough to be represented in court. 2. Some (read:almost all) white people empathize less with black people, so can't make themselves care what happens to someone that doesn't remind them of someone they know or love. 3. Some of them are just cruel crackers that hate black people.

With these factors in play, it's notoriously easy to get a guilty verdict on a black person for any type of offense.

Well, I'm backing Judge Stevens for finally sticking it to the All White Jury. He's awake and he sees through tactics, and if anything needs to be reviewed by the Supreme Court, it's whether a it's mandatory to really have a jury of one's own peers.

The official death count from the strongest hurricane ever measured in the Western Hemisphere: zero - Gunnar Ozuna Period 6

Things are running completely normal in Mexico after Hurricane Patricia hit the coast, and the death count is zero. Just two days after the Hurricane Patricia hit the lands, with wind speeds that reached up to 165 mph, the only issues are flooding in the tool, wind damage to houses, some minor power outages, and some tiny mudslides that blocked the highway. It was a rare bit of good news for the Mexican President Peña Nieto, who has lately been hammered by criticism.                                                                                                                                                                                                               After hurricanes of the past such as Katrina and Andrew, it's great that there is zero fatalities, and almost ZERO inconveniences. This is a rare occurrence with tropical storms. I'm very happy for the citizens of the area.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         http://www.latimes.com/world/mexico-americas/la-fg-mexico-patricia-manzanillo-20151025-story.html

United Airlines apologizes for inconvienece to disabled man- Bethany Wolfe 3rd

summary:
Ironically, D' Arcee Neal, who has cerebral palsy, had to crawl off his flight after a meeting over disabled accessibility policies with Uber. Neal was forced to wait on the flight for 30 minutes for a modified wheelchair, all the while needing to use the bathroom. Eventually, Neal crawled off the plane only to discover the wheelchair and several assistants waiting, mouths agape, at the door. Although this was an extreme inconvenience and Neal didn't make a complaint, United airlines contacted Neal the day after to apologize and offer a $300 compensation. This, he said, was a shocker because although the incident was common, airlines never apologized for their actions. Neal is contemplating pressing charges because "he believes the industry needs to "take a hard look" at their policies".
analysis:
It's encouraging to know that United took responsibility for their actions, but this is a common issue we should address. Because nearly 1 in 5 people have a disability, the persistent problem of accessibility shouldn't be ignored. People shouldn't have to suffer increased inconvenience due to their disabilities, therefore, companies -and airlines- should make sure to change policies to provide assistance and accessibility.

First the Moon, Now Mars // Uriel Cruz, Period 6

Someone call up Matthew McConaughey and Matt Damon because the time for Interstellar exploration has come once again. NASA is currently testing out a new design for a rocket to send astronauts to Mars. A CDR, Critical Design Review, of NASA's latest human-rated rocket space launch system, SLS, has been cleared. The last time NASA conducted a CDR was nearly 40 years ago. The SLS is the agency's most powerful rocket and is planned to join the Orion Space Capsule on missions to Mars, and deep space. The actual rocket may be built, integrated, and tested roughly around the time I graduate after the design is certified in 2017.

History is about to be made and I really want to be alive when it happens so NASA is doing a great job of starting the new project now that I'm old enough to remember but young enough to live to tell the tale to people nearly 40 years from now. After the US and Russia's race to the moon, I find it interesting how times have changed and bigger goals have been set. I am excited to hear from the other nations and see if any other country will step up to the plate and race. I finally get to live in all those space movies I've seen. How exciting.

Erin O'Day - Team Carson puts Hillary's 'Hard Choices' to use

Hillary Clinton sent a copy of her memoir, Hard Choices, to Ben Carson's campaigning offices, and the staff there "put it to good use" by using it as a coaster, a laptop stand, a step stool, and a door stopper, saying "thanks Hillary" each time.

I find this so frustratingly petty and it really shows what our politics have become: just a series of moves and counter moves. This tradition of presidential races involving "baby kissing," and the likes, just like how it is today, with candidates constantly coming up with ways to insult each other, started in the early 19th century when the two-party system was really getting along and candidates garnered followers and supporters.

The Massacre that didn't happen -Carli Copell 6th period

The Massacre that didn't happen

This article is about a student named David LaDue, a student who crated a bomb and brought it to school in 2013. While LaDue was in custody police interviewed him and he told them everything. LaDue said he really liked killing people and was excited to see people frantically running around in shock. He said, "It's entertaining." This article is talking about how the police and a random caller all stopped this act of terror from happening.

Analysis: This article makes me happy and angry at them same time. I am happy because this act of terror was stopped but angry because the fact that a boy in high school is so messed up. That he finds joy in watching peoples suffering and pain. This article relates back to the Columbine shooting and many  other incidents such as this.

Processed Meat Can Actually Cause Cancer --Madeleine Norton, 4th period

Although known worldwide as fatty foods only to be eaten on occasions, it's a bit scary for one to consider the fact that they could get cancer by indulging insistently on burgers and hot dogs.
A recent discovery made by the scientists of the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that meats such as sausage, ham, and even bacon (otherwise referred to as processed meat or red meat) are a cause to cancer in a vast number of cancer victims. However, the WHO also stressed meat's health benefits, and also claimed that the study has limited evidence and must be extended for further research and reliability.

BBC News explains in the related article, "It is the chemicals involved in the processing which could be increasing the risk of cancer. High temperature cooking, such as on a barbecue, can also create carcinogenic chemicals. In the UK, around six out of every 100 people get bowel cancer at some point in their lives. If they were all had an extra 50g of bacon a day for the rest of their lives then the risk would increase by 18% to around seven in 100 people getting bowel cancer. 'So that's one extra case of bowel cancer in all those 100 lifetime bacon-eaters,' argued Sir David Spiegelhalter, a risk professor from the University of Cambridge."
The WHO continues to spread awareness concerning the issue by analyzing statistics that are easy to understand and truly grasp the manner of the issue at hand. For example:
Red meat risk in context: 21% of bowel cancers are caused by processed or red meat while 86% of lung cancers are caused by tobacco. Respectively, 19% of all cancers caused by tobacco compared to 3% of all cancers ascribed to red/processed meat.
