Zoe Norton-Rodriguez--9th--Will hacking nature protect us from climate change?

Zoe Norton-Rodriguez

Global warming is a serious threat on our future and scientists are working hard to stop it. One of the biggest issues is that our cars and factories releases thousands of pounds of CO2 into the air. The solution is to suck more CO2 out the atmosphere than we put in. This would be very costly and there's nowhere to put the CO2 once it's out of the air. Scientists said that its physically possible to take the CO2 and turn it into materials for buildings and clothes. The device they have built is not ready for wide-scale use and is currently being used to feed plants in greenhouses.

This is a great thing that people are working creatively towards helping reverse the damage we've done to our planet. This article makes very obvious that even if this machine is developed and put into use around the world, the problem still remains that we are relying too much on fossil fuels. This is similar to how in the industrial revolution cities that housed lots of factories and mills, such as London and Pittsburgh, were covered in smoke and smog. This stained buildings and streets and was unhealthy for it's citizens. However before more serious damage was done, things cleaned up and the cities have breathable air. This is an example of how people noticed the direct impact pollution had on the environment and realized the need for change. Hopefully this will work and fossil fuels with be reduced greatly and the idea of running our cars on gas will be nothing more than a crazy fact of history.

  1. This concept of a device that can turn the CO2 in our air into material for clothes and buildings is beyond cool. People do need to stop relying so heavily on fossil fuels, but the move to cleaner alternatives will be very hard considering how expensive they are. An electric car and solar panels cost so much more than a gas-guzzling vehicle and coal burning electricity. - Brenna Hale(6th Period)
