Baltimore- Alex Norton 4th Period

If you've been keeping up with the news, you would have seen the riots following Freddie Gray's death in Baltimore. Gray died in the custody of the Baltimore police department and no one is positive what happened. He was injured while he was in the police van and the whole thing is under heavy investigation. Things are looking like Ferguson Pt. 2.
This could easily be tied to the civil rights movement in the 1960's. Even though African Americans had been freed from slavery in the late 19th century, they still had to fight for basic rights and equality through the 1960's and it seems like the fight isn't over.

More Than 4,000 Dead In Nepal As Earthquake Toll Rises/ Madeline Boreham/ 4th period

It has been confirmed that the Earthquake in Nepal is responsible for at least 4,000 deaths. The aftershock it making it difficult for aid to come in. Traffic is usually blocking off drivers, and the areas that really ned help are remote and difficult to drive to.  The 7.8 earthquake was said to have left one million kids in need of support.  Many people are still afraid to return to their hometown. The bases that have been set up are starting to become over crowded, and they are running out of materials.  Many organizations have stepped out, showing support.  The ADB just sent 3 million for immediate aid, then quickly promised 200 million that will be sent over for rehabilitation.

I think most people would agree when I state it is essential that the US helps out Nepal as best as we can. Many people are suffering and the US has the money to help them. The aid will need to be much more than just money sent over, there should be volunteers helping figure out new ways to reach survivors. The country's involvement has the potential to stop the death toll from rising. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it will also put the U.S. in good graces with Nepal. It has been made very easy to donate with almost every other website providing a link for you to send money.  The issue is making sure that the money is going towards the people recovering and making sure that they have the resources in order to make that a possibility. If this is brought to the peoples attention the right way, showing everyone just haw bad the damage is. I believe that Nepal can receive the aid it truly needs from the U.S.

Happy Birthday Hubble Telescope! - Trevor Haueisen 6th

Summary:
The Hubble space telescope recently turned 25!!! The telescope was named in honor of the astronomer who pioneered the field of extragalactic astronomy and discovered the redshift of the galaxies. Since it's launch, the Hubble has been crucial telescope finding and seeing things astronomers thought weren't possible.

Analysis:
The Hubble telescope has helped NASA see galaxies, supernovas, and learn the age of the universe. In the age of technology this is a very helpful tool of discovery that was invented by American scientists at NASA.

Greece Runs Low of Time, Money, and Options - Sophia Davison

As Greece reels out desperate measures and minimal possibilities for current and future financial and economic stability, Eurozone has developed more and more of an aversion towards loaning more of the financial aid partially agreed upon to the country. The money paid towards financial aid and stability for Greece approaches repayment time, and as the Greek financial minister Yanis Varoufakis said in the numerous meeting held in the past few days, Greece is not in a position currently to pay back the loans. This causes many more issues and concerns for what lies in store for the country.
"European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said the ECB would go on allowing emergency lending to Greek banks as long as they were assessed as solvent. But he cautioned that soaring Greek government bond yields were diminishing the value of the collateral that the banks present to get funds."
Major pressure is now upon Greek heads of state to figure out new plans and come up with emergency reforms that are satisfactory to Eurozone's leaders. The past few plans presented have been rejected and given necessary revisions/requirements in order for new plans to even be assessed by Eurozone. The meetings held actually accomplished little, just redefining terms of reform for aid for the millionth time. Unfortunately, these meetings did cause for some new strategies by the Greek government in immediate management of money, as "more wage or pension cuts and said creditors must agree on a realistic target for the primary budget surplus before debt service.
"'Our government is eager to rationalize the pension system (for example, by limiting early retirement), proceed with partial privatization of public assets, ... create a fully independent tax commission,' Varoufakis said."
By now sacrificing a campaign promise of the minister, Greece will not be raising the minimum wage as said, which only deepens the crisis of the civilians whose livelihood and survival depend upon these long, drawn-out, yet seemingly ineffective meetings that are being held. The only solution to this problem is to draw up concise, managed, and requirement-filling reform plans, presenting them to the Eurozone managers, and smart money decisions here after.
"We agreed that an agreement will be difficult but it will happen and it will happen quickly because that is the only option we have."

Baltimore Enlists National Guard and Curfews - Madison Escano

Maryland governor Larry Hogan enlisted the help of the National Guard on Monday evening in order to tame the riots in Baltimore following the murder of unarmed Freddie Gray. Protests and eventual rioting broke out in the late afternoon following Gray's memorial service at New Shiloh Baptist Church. White House officials, politicians, and civil rights activists like Rev. Jesse Jackson and Dick Gregory made up 2,000 attendees in the service. On Monday evening, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake stated that a 10 pm to 5 am curfew would be set in place every night for a week starting on Tuesday. Rawlings-Blake went on to state, "Too many people have spent generations building up this city for it to be destroyed by thugs."

While rioting and looting is unnecessary, I find it disheartening that the riots are making bigger headlines than the actual murder of Freddie Gray. Police brutality is an issue in this country and worldwide but some people refuse to acknowledge that and it's shocking. Futhermore, this is a result that shouldn't have to repeat itself. However, we've seen similar scenes from the Rodney King riots, Civil Rights Movement riots, and even more recently, the riots from Ferguson, Missouri, following the shooting of Michael Brown. I hope that in the future, we don't have to worry about such injustices and that the justice system isn't as corrupt.

Indiana and Arkansas Amend New Religious Freedom Laws- Joelle Gnikpingo, 2nd period

Indiana Gov Mike Pence
Mike Pence, Governor of Indiana

After the Arkansas Sense passed its Religious Freedom Restoration Act, governor Asa Hutchinson refused to sign it until the language of the law was changed.

Indiana governor Mike Pence added an amendment that addresses sexual orientation and gender identity. It was approved and "ensures that interests in religious freedom" are protected and it prohibits businesses from using this as discrimination.

Analysis
The First Amendment was placed to avoid discrimination based on religion and to be able to freely practice one's own religion.

Baltimore Becomes a Mad House by Madeline Ibarra Period 2

Monday's violence came the same day as Gray's funeral. The 25-year-old was arrested on April 12 and died one week later from a fatal spinal cord injury. "I am sure that the family is concerned, and I am positive that they are against what is beginning to develop here in town," said Billy Murphy, an attorney for the Gray family. "They don't deserve this any more than Freddie Gray deserved it," he said about the injured officers. Because of the violence, the Baltimore Orioles have postponed their home game against the Chicago White Sox on Monday, the team announced via Twitter. At first, the team planned to go ahead with the game, but delayed it after further talks with the Police Department. A new date for the game will be announced later. Over the weekend, a few protesters vandalized police cars, threw objects at officers, cursed at them and scuffled with them. About a dozen young men smashed squad cars with garbage cans, climbed on top of them and stomped on them. "This has got to the point, this is not about Gray right now. It's reactionary," a Baltimore resident and protester said on Monday. "You can only put so much into a pressure cooker before it pop."

The unrest in the nation is raising at an alarming rate. The actions that are being taken by citizens and law enforcement officials do no benefit with one another in a way that peace can be found. What is happening is that different groups are bashing heads and it is being taken publicly and could seriously harm by-standers. I understand the unease from what had happened and in no way is it acceptable but the outbreak in terror was unacceptable in its own way. Many citizens not involved with the protest were dragged along in it either as a supporter or as one who had been injured. There needs to be a way to settle what has happened that will appease the people of Baltimore and put the law enforcement in their place without hurting more people.

Hosting Ted Cruz- Hannah Clifford 5th Period

http://www.cnn.com/2015/04/27/politics/ted-cruz-gay-rights-hotel-owner-apologizes/index.html

A gay hotelier hosted an event for senator Ted Cruz without fully understanding Cruz's opposition to same sex marriage. Afterward, he did research and decided that he had betrayed the gay community. He then posted an apology on Facebook for serving Cruz.

This was written by Eric Bradner for CNN. I have two big things to say about this. One: this is why it is important to keep up with what is happening around us. You never know when or where you may see a political figure, but as citizens of a democracy, we are called to understand what is going on with those who are in charge of our country. When we know the views of these political leaders, we can make an informed decision such as whether or not it would be a good idea to serve them should they show up at an event you're hosting. Second: the gay rights topic has been a big political controversy since around the 60's or 70's. I think this man should be commended for how he dealt with the knowledge he gained about Cruz. Rather than getting defensive and lashing out on those who had something to say about what he did, he simply wrote a mature apology to anyone who might've been offended. This probably stings for the senator as well because rather than causing a scene, this man has made a public acknowledgement of the regret he feels from hosting Cruz, giving the senator bad press.

Riots in Baltimore, Lydia Petree, 4th Period

Today was the funeral of the latest victim to police brutality, Freddie Gray. This morning, nearly 2,000 people assembled to mourn the late Gray, with eulogies and tearful, soaring music. Hours later, riots begin in the form of shouting and bottle throwing. The national guard is sent in with riot gear, and the violence escalated into the burning and looting of a CVS, crushing of a police vehicles and at least fifteen injured police officers. By this evening, 27 or more people had been arrested. Beginning tomorrow, the mayor of Baltimore, Maryland has imposed a 10 pm to 5 am curfew. This is intended to slow down protests and stop violence in the city.

This is certainly not the fault of the protesters. This is only the last in many, many cases of police brutality and racial discrimination. The police department, like many aspects of our US system of government in modern days, is flawed. It is this, along with decades of history, that has pushed the violence to this point. When the police show up in riot gear before it has gotten to this point, it makes it seem that they are preparing for the worst to happen, and in some ways induces it to happen. The common underlying issue here is the police. It is the people who are confused and angry and this has been coming out in ways that are wrong. I do believe their intentions really are good, but they feel like there is no other way that they might be heard. I wish that this wasn't true, but it's not very often that a peaceful protest makes the major headlines.

Sisters Survive Two Weeks in Woods- Iris Hughey p.5

Leslie Roy, 52, and Lee Wright, 56, were driving from a relative's in Kalamazoo, Michigan when their truck got stuck in snow on a remote road in northern Luce County along Lake Superior. The two survived for 13 days on eight boxes of Girl Scout cookies,  some cheese puffs, and metled snow (water). Their car was spotted on Friday by a Michigan State Police helicopter and the sisters then got out of the car and began waving. Roy and Wright were finally rescued when the helicopter landed a few miles away on a beach and authorities hiked to them.

It's so scary to me that a car can get stranded on the side of the road and not be noticed for 13 entire days. It makes me wonder who else has been stranded or missing but was actually in plain sight. I'm glad the two sister are alright, though!

Analysis: We should have stricter gun regulation. The right to bare arms is not as much of a necessity now as it was when the Constitution was created. Now, I understand that people do need to be able to protect themselves, but we must make sure we are allowing people in their right minds to be able to own deadly weapons.

Sentences in Florida A&M Band Death by Lydia Petree, P.4

In November 2011, band member and student Robert Champion, 26, died after a band hazing incident. On a bus after a football game in Orlando, Florida, new members were beaten as they ran down the aisles by senior members. After multiple traumas, Champion died an hour after the incident. His autopsy ruled his death homicide. Four years later, the last three defendants have been prosecuted in the case. A jury in Florida deliberated almost three hours and came back with guilty verdicts of manslaughter and hazing resulting in death for the three students, now 22, 25, and 28 years old. The sentencing will finally occur this June. Until then, they will be in the county jail. Fifteen defendants in all were prosecuted, most took plea deals. The last one got 77 months in prison. These three were the last to be examined in order to close out the case.

This case is another example of the delayed judicial system in the United States. It takes years for some to get justice, and for others, justice will never be reached. Some that are innocent spend a lifetime in prison, as seen by numerous headlines. It's only the pushing back from various organizations that lead these cases to even be reopened. Other flaws in our judicial system include the fact that relatively small crimes, such as possession of marijuana, can lead to years in high security jails while other more violent crimes require less jail time. Not to mention the discrimination that occurs throughout the system. White people get lesser sentences again and again. This delayed justice is one of the better outcomes that have come forth from the US judicial system in recent years.

Protest Protest Protest (Ashton Garcia, 2nd)

Many protestors gathered around the White House to protest gay marriage, yelling about how in religious it would be to allow gay marriages. It is being decided whether or not gay marriage should be a national right, and the decisions should be announced in June. Many religious leaders attended, many Catholic, Orthodox, and Hispanic (who are very commonly Catholic) were also protesting as well. They said hurtful things, and used religion to back up the protest.

First of all, the rights for the LGBTQ+ community have been fought for since (about) the 60's. Of course, it's always been something that's needed to be addressed. Of course, many mant people have personal, negative, views on things such as gay marriage, but it has nothing to do wth religion: the Biblical Verse that people generally, and almost always refer to (Leviticus) was actually mistranslated when first translated to English. Essentially, the English version was translated to: don't treat another man as you would a woman. Before ever being translated, it practically said,"hey dude don't sleep in other men or woman's beds because that's just disrespectful." Fun fact: the Bible never actually includes homophobia (which would make sense because Jesus Himself hung out with hookers, sinners, was homeless, was anti-slut shamming, and so many other things), but there are some verses that people decide to use for their personal benefit. Also, to support more of the LGBTQ+ community: "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus" -Galatians 3:28.
I don't mean to bring a religious argument, but I do mean to say that using a religion to create hate and judgment (which Christianity literally tells you not to do as one of the first lessons) is absolutely terrible, and has caused so much pain and suffering. I also do mean to say that this has been a historic problem ever since the Bible was translated, and has caused years upon years of murder, intolerance, bullying, etc.
On top of that, no matter what you believe or don't believe (there are many people who aren't Christian that hate on the LGBTQ+ community), using a personal intolerance will only create more tension. I do mean so say that whatever you personally believe in, awesome. If you believe that gay people are totally gross, then good for you. But when it comes to human being's rights, personal beliefs should not get in the way, for the rights of people and the equality of people must be recognized if we want to be the country we say we are.

If I have offended anyone, I am truly sorry, but this is a historic problem and unfortunetly has a lot to do with the wrath of "Christians". I felt like I needed to use some Biblical references to further what I meant to say, and if that offended anyone, again, I am very sorry. But please at least recognize the last part of the final paragraph.

Remembering the Aurora Movie Theater Shooting by Yasmine B (5th pd)

Yesterday, CNN decided to do a special on remembering the tragic movie theater shooting that occurred in Aurora on July 20, 2012. It was a special article featuring the stories of each of the seventeen victims that were gruesomely murdered that day, including reasons for why they decided to go see the movie and extra details that made the reader connect more to the victims of that day.
This tragic event reminds me of the whole Bonus Army conflict in Hoover's presidency. Many Americans at the time saw this event through the same eyes that many people today see the Aurora theater shooting. Even though the Aurora shooting was worse than the Bonus Army incident, they were both pretty big shocks to Americans.

Baltimore protests turn violent; police officers injured in clashes- Ausia Jones

Chaos and violence erupted tonight in Baltimore due to the death of Freddie Gray. Many people believe that there's much more to this situation. The riot is all over social media because of all the damage done in this city of Baltimore. One of America's greatest cities being destroyed by ignorant people. Many police officers have suffered from broken bones and 5,000 additional officers needed to protect the people and the town of Baltimore. School has been canceled for tomorrow because of this night of horror. 1,500 members of the national guard were sent to Baltimore to protect this city. Many riots happened around the time MLK was assassinated, people were so angry and ruined other people's property.

ISIS claims responsibility for Texas shooting but offers no proof : Vivie Behrens (Period 6, Week 2)

At a cartoon contest in Garland, TX, two men, Simpson and Soofi, began to fire gunshots at the location of the event because the cartoons, portraying Prophet Muhammad, threatened their religious beliefs. ISIS has released a statement supporting the actions of the shooters and has released more threats to terrorize the U.S. It has not been determined whether these men were officially members of ISIS; however, ISIS claims that these men were Al Khilafa soldiers (soldiers of ISIS).

This act has sparked international controversy about whether the act was in fact linked with the terrorist organization or just a random act of violence that ISIS is claiming to be affiliated with for more press and international attention. People across the globe, of all religions, races, etc. have spoken out about how terrorism, despite provocation, is unacceptable and must be eradicated for the safety of all civilians. Actions by ISIS can be related to acts committed by Al Qaida on 9/11 because they both threatened the safety of civilians in order to defend their religion.

25th Anniversary of Hubble Space Telescope- Margaret Canady 2nd period

The Hubble Space Telescope celebrated it's 25th anniversary last week. It was launched on April 24, 1990, from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Ever since, it has been flying 340 miles above Earth, orbiting every 97 minutes.
NASA calls the telescope the "most significant advance in astronomy since Galileo's telescope". With an unobstructed view of our universe, the Hubble Space Telescope has made more than a million observations, taking photographs and collecting data about the planets, stars, and galaxies surrounding our universe. The data collected by the telescope has been used in more than 12,800 scientific papers, making it one of the most prolific scientific instruments ever created.
Hubble is expected to keep taking photographs into the 2030s. NASA has plans to launch a new space-based instrument, the James Webb Space Telescope, in 2018.

It's incredible to see how much technology and scientific knowledge have grown within the past 200 years! From the Industrial Revolution in the 1800s, to the first flight by the Wright Brothers in 1903, to the Space Race in the late 20th century, what we know and what we can discover about our universe has grown exponentially. It's exciting to see how far we've come, and still how far we have to go, in our technological/science/math advancements. As a generation living in such a monumental period of time, we have to be able to use these advancements to our benefit, including in fields such as medicine, education, and ecological conservation.

George W. Bush didn't mean to criticize Obama-Joe Katinas

Ari Fleischer, President George W. Bush's former spokesman, the one to question Bush during a weekend event, pushed back strongly today against media reports that Bush criticized President Barack Obama's foreign policy on ISIS and Iran.

Bush spoke Saturday night before a closed-door meeting of wealthy donors at a Republican Jewish Coalition summit, offering up how he would handle top foreign policy issues from ISIS to Iran as he fielded questions from Fleischer, who was press secretary at the outset of Bush's presidency.

The event was supposed to be off the record and closed to the press. But media reports quoting those who attended gave the impression that Bush was changing his long-standing policy as ex-president of staying out of the political fray.

This article makes me feel very distrusting towards Bush. I sincerely doubt that he didn't mean to criticize Obama and was only trying to cover up any controversy that arouse. This reminds me of the election of 1828, when various rumors and insults were thrown at the canidates, Adams and Jackson.

Nepal Earthquake Shakes Us All and Urges Us to Help (Elizabeth Muscari, Period 6th)

An earthquake in Nepal recently killed more than 4,000 and injured many more. Saurpani, Nepal was noted to be the epicenter. Villagers in this town are scattered, dying, dead, or severely hurt. It's apparent that this is the biggest earthquake in 80 years for Nepal, possibly the worst one in global times since Haiti and Japan. Nature has also taken a toll from this disaster, Towns have been destroyed and Nepal's citizens can be seen riding around holes of rock and eroded surfaces. Nepal is the definition of devastation this week. Rescue crews are having issues distributing aid to all parts of Nepal and it's clear that Nepal will need foreign help.

Analysis: This relates to APUSH because we have seen many natural disasters like this before. We have witnessed, in the past twenty years, earthquakes in Japan, San Diego, and Haiti. These disasters are spread out all over, yet the response is always the same: immediate help and relief. It's our jobs as Americans to spread our idea of freedom and acceptance by aiding those affected in Nepal, just as we did with Haiti, Japan, and California.

Google Buys Patents- Jazmin Garcia (2nd Period)

http://money.cnn.com/2015/04/27/technology/google-patent/index.html?iid=ob_homepage_tech_pool&iid=obnetwork

Google helps anyone get their patent sold. Patent trolls cost innovators $500 billion in lost wealth. The average patent lawsuit results in $122 million in lost wealth. Some patent trolls have been eager to buy inventors' patents in the hope of making money by suing patent infringes. Patent collecting companies will pay the original patent holder a portion of the money that the company gained through litigation. Defending and licensing a patent can be expensive and confusing, but if you sell to a company like Google, it might be appealing to some inventors.

This relates to APUSH because this is a huge advancement in technology. I bet Tesla or Edison had a hard time selling their patents. As for today, it's become easier and because everyone knows Google, people's inventions can circulate more efficiently.

RIP Freddie Gray, RIP Violence to Drive Out Injustice (Elizabeth Muscari, Period 6th)

Protests have broken out in response to the murder of Freddie Gray in Baltimore, Maryland. While most of the protests are nonviolent, a riot broke out today hours after Mr. Gray's funeral. The riot turned violent and many looted and burned businesses. Protesters are planning to meet tomorrow morning in a nearby church to "gain focus" on the matter at hand. In the meantime, Baltimore has called for a state of emergency and has requested for the National Guard to assist local officers in protecting bystanders and other non-participating civillians.

Analysis: This relates to APUSH in my personal life. I come from a long line of Italian immigrants. In history, the Italians, particularly Catholics, were discriminated against. When the Italians came to America, they were outcasts because American didn't know to classify them as either black or white.
My mom's family was a part of this discrimination. My mother grew up in Birmingham, AL in the 60s and 70s. Growing up in one of the main cities in the  Civil Rights Movement, her grandfather, an Italian immigrant, owned a grocery store located on 16th street and sold mainly to African Americans. (Downtown Birmingham was mainly black at this time). This business was the family's main source of income, considering Italian immigrants in AL were also discriminated against and very poor; however, the day after the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, riots and protests broke out. During the riots, my mother's grandmother was pulling African Americans out of the street because they were being water-hosed during the protests.

Some of the protests were very peaceful while others, most of them, were extremely violent on both ends.
During one of the riots, her family's store was destroyed. Angry rioters had looted and burned it completely. Most of these rioters didn't realize this was a store that was kind and accepting to ALL people, especially African Americans.  Her family lost their main source of income and didn't even have enough money to rebuild. Some of the African Americans living in the area donated money to rebuild, but her family never did.

On spring break, my mother and I visited where the store used to be, and still she can remember how devastated her family was to have lost their business.
Yes, racism still exists and it ruins lives! Killing innocent people is never an answer nor is it acceptable. Yet, the solution is not to add more violence.

The solution is to move forward and find equality. Looting, burning, and destroying businesses is a form of protesting that ruins people's livelihoods! It's never the answer, as my mother learned, because destroying someone's (who might I add may even be IN SUPPORT of the cause) business is a form of hate, and for some people, like my mother, it's something they'll never forget.

ISIS and Americans- Diego Garcia

There is many young Americans who get involved with this terrorist groups because they feel like they need something in life. They are people around there 20-30 years old who are regular people. Some of them are arrested in airports when they got to america. Some of them are as young as 17 years old and already involved in this.

This is relating to the red scare during the cold war. There were people who acted as spies to the soviet union. They were Americans who believed in them and wanted to the harm to America. Back then it was communism and now it is terrorism. These are big deals going on in or history.

Nepal earthquake kills thousands by: Milan Hamilton

The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal two days ago surged past 3,000 on Monday, a government official said. The desperate search for survivors from the country's worst natural disaster in more than 80 years continued. The number of people confirmed dead in Nepal stands at 3,218, said Nepalese Ministry of Home Affairs spokesman Laxmi Dhakal. India has reported 56 deaths, and China another 20. Tibet has counted 25 deaths and 117 injured, according to Xinhua news agency, citing disaster relief officials in Tibet. The death toll is expected to climb further as officials get information from the rugged countryside that makes up most of Nepal. As day broke Monday, Nepal was still in survival mode after suffering a series of aftershocks following the huge initial quake on Saturday. The damage was everywhere. Stunned residents wandered the streets of Kathmandu, the capital city of roughly 3 million people that's now the focus of international disaster relief efforts.

It's so sad that so many people were killed from natural forces. Depending on where you live you either have hurricanes, floods, tonadoes, blizzards, avalanches, earthquakes etc. and they are inevitable. My hope is that we can avoid the trauma of these natural disasters by finding out when they are coming ahead of time so less people are killed. This can be done with improved technology. Technology has already aided our discoverys and created so many jobs and I believe with new discoverys, even more jobs will be created in order to help the citizens of this country, and save lives!

Mobile Bay Boaters Remain Missing By: Nina Bharadwaj, 2nd period

Since an intense storm struck Mobile Bay, Alabama and caused several sailboats to capsize, only two bodies have been discovered. However, "a recovery operation" has been launched to find the other five victims of the storm. Aircrafts and searchers have covered a span of 2,500 miles to find these individuals. On Saturday, the 57th annual Dauphin Island Race took place, where over 100 boats were involved. Forty people were saved from the water.
In addition to capsized sailboats, one vessel struck a bridge. Out of the two bodies, one was found on Saturday night and the other on Sunday morning. On Saturday- at around 4:30 p.m.- the Mobile Coast Guard was given the report that a sailing regatta in the area had been hit with severe and weather, leaving many in the water.

This is only one of the many examples in history where weather has hindered society. In the 1930s ("Dirty Thirties"), the Dust Bowl occurred, in which very destructive dust storms, caused by poor farming and drought, largely affected Americans. This period of depression brought about malnutrition and dust pneumonia that killed hundreds of people. Because of the Dust Bowl, thousands of families were forced to move. These people were known as "Okies" because they traveled to California and other places from Oklahoma. However, they soon realized that the economic conditions in other areas weren't much better. Regardless of how much society has evolved, weather will always be an uncontrollable force that impacts humanity.

Space Congress returns to Cape Canaveral- Diego Garcia

Th space committee used to do all these things where they would meet up and talk about things concerning space. Then all of sudden they stopped doing them more frequently than they used too. They are going to get together to talk about it to make sure something is done later in time. They have thought of many things to make it easier.

This is like when they first started NASA was new and it was very popular among people. Now it has become something that very few worry about. Even though there is much more technology there has not been anything new about going to space but this convention thing.

We Appreciate Black Culture, Not Black People: Daizha Lankford

Well, If you follow me on twitter you know my views on the very public and recent shootings of black teenagers, most of them being unarmed. I am usually politically correct, considering my fellow peers might not understand the outrage and anger some of the African-American race is feeling. Just today the riots in Baltimore for Freddie Gray were televised by no other than Fox News and CNN. However, what they failed to show was the weeks of PEACEFUL protest going on before the 100-200 or so violent protesters erupted this afternoon. Don't believe the hype, my friends, there are about 10,000 peaceful protestors surrounding the city as well. Of course, you will never see that because the media only likes to cover stories that show the bad side of the issue. Not because they are racist or biased, (That's what I tell myself to not go on a tangent every day), but because it makes a better story to see "Thugs and Savages" destroying the streets of U.S cities.

Now, What I find funny is how so many people will read the news and think " This is wrong, crazy, and stupid", yet you were just jamming to Beyonce this morning, wearing your cornrows, and trying to get your Kylie Jenner lips. You make jokes about being black and emulating the culture, but all become silent when the problems of the culture you are emulating surface. Have I offended you? Think about it. How many of you (my peers, white, black, Asian, or etc) are actually going to take a stand or even acknowledge the fact that black culture is praised, but black people are not. See, just the other day in our school a group of black juniors came out of the cafeteria blasting the music you jam to in your car, yet they were called ratchet and ghetto. Why? You like the music don't you? You just don't like it when the people whose culture it comes from is blasting it? Ahh, Have I offended you? Think about it.

Don't get me wrong every race and culture has its ignorant side. However, a white person doing drugs is praised but a black person is categorized as a criminal. Don't tell me you haven't seen it? At our school alone we have a whole group of people who smoke, drink, and sleep around with every straight white guy walking down the halls, but they are cool? if my brother did those things he could get shot dead in the street. Have I offended you? Think about it. It is a culture emulated, but a people hated.

Think about it.

Baltimore protests turn violent by: Milan Hamilton

About a dozen young men smashed squad cars with garbage cans, climbed on top of them and stomped on them, CNN video showed. "This has got to the point, this is not about Gray right now. It's reactionary," a Baltimore resident and protester said on Monday. "You can only put so much into a pressure cooker before it pop."

This is so important because the same kind of things African Americans have been striving to get since slavery, they're (we) are still trying to get now: justice, equal rights, integration. As the article pointed out, much of the rioting wasn't solely  because of Freddie Gray's death, but because of all of the injustice since the beginning of this country. We fought out of slavery in order to achieve basic human rights and citizenship. We fought for voting rights, and even though the 15th amendment granted that to us, it wasn't really achieved until LBJ passed the Voting Rights Act because people still continued to try and stop blacks from voting. Just like in history, there are protests and riots. It's so incredibly sad that nothing has changed. Though we try to act like we have "come so far", we're are actually getting worse.

Freddie Gray- Kennedi Mayes

Freddie Gray, the most recent publicisized victim of racial profiling was given a funeral today in Baltimore Maryland. Gray was reportedly stopped by police a little over a week ago and inappropriately handcuffed. There were reports of him claiming he couldn't breathe as well as descriptions of his handcuffing. The police had him cuffed as if he was a severe threat, when in reality, he had been doing nothing to provoke such a severe cuffing. His ankles were cuffed together and his wrists were cuffed together and attatched behind his back to his ankle cuffs. His family has reported that he died from a severe injury to his spinal chord, a crushed voice box, and a broken neck.

This is a devastating story. It is so sad to see yet another man victimized and killed for no reason. I hope just is brought and there is a way we end this oppression of black men.

5 Still Missing After Storm - Hannah Kalan 6th Period

This Saturday, in Mobile Bay, Alabama, several boats were capsized when a large storm blew in. So far, the coast guard, along with 100 volunteer search party vessels, have found two bodies, with an approximated five still missing. The search party covered over 2500 miles, with the help of two aircraft in search of the missing people.
I think that it's awful how people can get caught up in a storm like that and end up so far away from their original positions due to ocean currents. Hopefully situations like this won't happen in the future and technology will allow us to communicate with those out on the water in time to keep them from getting lost at sea.

Lucky woman finds a 3.69 carat diamond at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro Arkansas which people may think is about 20,000 dollars worth! This is the biggest one that has been found this year! She will keep this diamond that she named the Hallelujah Diamond.
This relates to the Gold rush when people flocked to California to mine for gold. The United States has so many riches just waiting to be discovered and people will look for these gems for the rest of history. Definitely feel like going and finding some diamonds right now.

Capital Punishment Banned in Nebraska- Lossie Hudspeth

Nebraska is to become one of the first conservative states, and the 19th state, to eliminate the death penalty from their constitution. Although, they haven't executed anyone since 1997, they have recently ordered lethal injections for the inmates on death row. Many of the senators worked to override the governor's veto of the bill abolishing capital punishment and won 30-19. This is a major achievement in recognizing the horrible nature of executions in America.
Capital Punishment was used frequently from the 1700's to the 1950's. Before people saw the punishment as a way to "get even" and it is still delivering that message today. Thankfully, the states and people recognize that wrong-doing and are stepping up to eliminate it.

Hilary makes first big speech - Veronica Nichols P2

Hilary Clinton spoke out about Womens rights in her first major speech of her campaign at a Women in  the World Summit in New York City, stating that "women's rights are human rights." She criticized anti-womens rights action taken recently like Hobby Lobby no longer offering contraception to its employees , the world economic forum for its lack of females, and the US senate for the way it stalled the nomination of Loretta Lynch> She even mentioned the thing that it seems hardest to get across to Anti-feminists, improving women's economic security will help everyone. She even mention the insane fact that The US is the only developed country in the free world that does not guarantee paid leave for new mothers. Clintons views on Women's and LGBT rights make her an extraordinary candidate for the presidency. If Clinton becomes presider she will be the first woman to ever hold the Presidency in the United States.

Gay Hotelier Apologizes -Hadassah Lai

Ian Reisner, a gay businessman hosted an event for presidential candidate Ted Cruz and is now facing boycotts along with his business partner Mati Weiderpass. The day after the event and the following week, Reisner faced emails, texts, blog posts, and phone calls criticizing him for hosting it. Reisner then made a public announcement in the gay-community that he had made a very big mistake and that he's very very sorry. He has spent time watching Cruz's campaigns carefully. He has admitted that he did not understand his policies and Cruz's campaign against same-sex marriage.

I don't think that he should face discrimination for holding this event, he was just exercising his hospitality, which is something everyone should do. Although Ted Cruz opposes same-sex marriage, and it may seem hypocritical that Reisner should hold the event, I think that he did a very kind thing to let him use his space and I respect him for it. After all, it is a free country, and Reisner should have the right to host whatever and whoever he likes without having to face such negative feedback.

Did Constitution Framers Intend Marriage Equality - Lindsey Galvan p.4

When the founding fathers wrote the US Constitution, did they intend to end slavery, end segregation, grant women's right, or to allow gay marriage? This question is being discussed in the Supreme Court. Originalists on the court may hew to conservative view, but most of the justices have given clues that they can see the "writing on wall".

I found this article very interesting. It makes me wonder if the writers of the constitution knew what would become of this country from the laws they created. It has been available to Americans to not be enslaved by one another, segregated, or held back because of who we are and how we decide to liv our lives.

Baltimore in a State of Emergency - Veronica Nichols P.2

There is rioting in Baltimore after the death of Freddie Gray, who died after suffering injuries in police custody. The national Guard has been called in by local police after multiple cars were set on fire and bricks and bottles thrown at police one of which was said to be "unresponsive." Because of the close proximity of MAryland to D.C president Obama was briefed on the situation and assured that the violence would be kept under control.
This has been another sickening death of a black man in what seems like a never-ending stream. This is another chance for the Black Lives Matter movement to make a real change and shed light on the situations going on all around the US. The protesting people were also chanting "no justice no peace" One of the rallying cries of the Civil Rights Movement. The movements today can have parallels drawn back to the civil rights movement because in essence they are really still fighting for the same thing, simple equality, not just on a legal platform but also in social customs as well.

Protest Turns Violent in Baltimore By: Zaria Chambers 5th period

After the funeral of Freddie Gray, the victim that was killed after his arrest in Baltimore violence broke out throughout the town. Many protesters began attacking police officers and so much violence erupted. Since the behavior of the protesters was so out of hand the Maryland National Guard has been on alert. There have been videos of police officers getting prepared for the madness to come. They were seen putting on all sorts of safety gear to protect them. There was a report that a group of teenagers had attacked one of the officers and police officers are trying to track down these suspects.

This is ridiculous. I don't think that being violent while protesting will do anything. If anything violence would make the whole situation worse because it's just adding fuel to the fire. I do hope that investigators will continue investigating this situation and that if there was any foul play that the police offices would be brought to justice. I also hope that the criminals that attacked the police officer would be caught as well. This can relate to things that happened earlier in history because of the protest. Martin Luther King approached the protest with nonviolence but things have changed since then. Hopefully things will get under control before anything really bad happens.

Chicago Suburb Bans Assault Weapons - Elisa Weich p. 5

For the first time since its institution in 2013, an ordinance banning assault weapons in Highland Park, Illinois, has been challenged, but the ban was upheld by the 7th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago.  This ban has since become a source of ongoing debate over gun control in Illinois.  Some lawmakers are comforted by the decision and public peace of mind it will bring, but others are angered by what they think is an unconstitutional ban and are holding out for an appeal.

This is just another case in the ongoing debate over gun laws, that is laws outlining how and why and where the buying and selling of guns should, or should not, be regulated.  This will be viewed as a triumph for those who are concerned with public security in the form of mental health, but those who are strict believers in the second amendment will lament this loss of ground on the issue.

Veronica Carleton 5th - Evolution of Social Justice

http://parenting.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/04/27/want-to-talk-with-your-children-about-bruce-jenner-consider-letting-them-talk-to-you/

KJ Dell'Antonia talks about a discussion she had with her tween about Bruce Jenner and then went on to discuss about how knowledge of trans people has changed over the years. While we still have not reached total acceptance most people know a lot more than they used too. Like all other form of civil rights, education on the plight of the suffering people is the first step. The same way civil rights and feminists leaders started by educating people, people like Bruce Jenner and Janet Mock are working to help people understand, so others like them can be safer in their environment. I support Bruce since he knew she would face a lot of criticism but was still willing to do it for the good of her community.

Sisters survive two weeks stranded in the woods - Jack VanGorden 4th per.

After being stranded for almost two weeks, Leslie Roy and Lee Wright are finally returning to Kalamazoo after being rescued off of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The sisters, 52 and 56, began their fight for survival when their truck got stuck in the snow on a remote path along Lake Superior. They had to make do with what they had so ate only Girl Scout cookies and cheese puffs. Their only source of water was the snow. Thanks to a glimmer off of their Ford Explorer's windshield, the Michigan State Police were able to spot them in their helicopter. As soon as the girls saw the helicopter, they got out of the car and started waving and building a signal fire. According to police, they were found with "multiple layers of clothes and were rationing their food." After their battery died, they huddled in the car and only heard some rustling noises every now and then.

This article was written by Andreas Preuss of CNN News on Sun April 26, 2015 at 5:41 AM ET. I think this just proves how hard humans will fight to stay alive. It seems like they did everything right by rationing their food and doing everything they could to stay warm. I think it was also very smart that they stayed with the car instead of wandering off. I'm glad that they were found with no serious injuries.

Containing the HIV Outbreak in Indiana by Corran Nolan

In Duvwe, Indiana, there has been an outbreak of HIV that dates back to the middle of December last year. The CDCP says that over 5-10% of the population is thought to have the virus, spread throughout the users of an opiate called Opana. Being a rural area, there is less access to medical resources, causing needle sharing and other unsanitary procedures occurring more often than in urban settings. The state and local officials are flooding the area with more resources and personnel to combat the outbreak, said to be most frequent among younger people who had not "gone through the height of the HIV outbreak in the 80's and 90's". They say, also, that illegal drug use is more common in these areas, because there is "not much to do," citing that use of these drugs spans multiple generations and is considered a family activity, with many people sharing needles.

This epidemic, as stated, is very similar to the HIV/AIDS epidemic of the 80's and 90's, however small it is contained. Rural areas, too, throughout American history have been less wealthy (and therefore less able to obtain more expensive medical procedures, such as pharmaceuticals) which may contribute to the re-using of needles in households. It is scary to see this come up again, as these diseases are not things that you want to mess with, no matter how small the chance. Hopefully the CDCP will do a good job in keeping this contained, so that we don't have another Spanish Flu on our hands.
