Chocolate With a Side of Listeria by Yasmine Bougacha (5th pd)

As of today, April 20th, Blue Bell is taking back all of their frozen delicacies that many Americans tend to find in the back of their freezer when cheating on their diet. That's right, no more homemade vanilla ice cream, sun-sweetened orange sherbet, or perfectly made ice cream sandwiches unless of course you wouldn't mind downing some side bacteria called Listeria monocytogenes with it (don't worry, it just enhances the flavor.)
So far, the company has documented about five cases of Listeria in Kansas and three in Texas and they are working their hardest to decontaminate all of its products so it can be out of the warehouse and back in our tummies again. Paul Kruse, the company CEO, made a statement of determination explaining how they're, "committed to doing the 100 percent right thing, and the best way to do that is to take all of our [Blue Bell Ice Cream] products off the market until we can be confident that they are all safe."
This reminds me a bit of when Upton Sinclair published his novel "The Jungle" only in the fact that they both have to do with food contamination. Blue Bell is not trying to hide its status of contamination (unlike the meat companies in the novel) and is at least being frank about it and making the effort to get rid of this bacteria so the company's customers will be happy again. Honesty is always the right way to go and there will be no doubt in the future that as soon as the first gallon of cookies and cream comes back I will be the first one in line to enjoy the decontaminated frozen pleasure of Blue Bell ice cream.

  1. This is a huge hit to business for Blue Bell, but it is nice to see that they are being smart about this. Hopefully this will not harm too many people and that people will take this recall seriously.

  2. I agree with Madeline. I think it is pretty respectable that they took responsibility for the accident and are recalling the products instead of trying to keep it a secret.
