1000 lb man moved to new home; Margaret Canady P.2

On Sunday, a man weighing more than 1,000 lbs. was moved from Providence, RI, to his new home in Cranston by a crane, then loaded onto a flatbed truck and taken down I-95. Brian Butler had been living in a nursing home that had to close down due to its enormous debt, and all patients had to move to other facilities.
Michael Raia of the Rhode Island Executive Office of Health & Human Services said plans to move Butler to the Eleanor Slater Hospital had begun weeks ago. “This is a patient with very complicated medical needs and it required a coordinated approach,” Raia said.
Moving Butler took almost seven hours, and included the aid of the Providence and Cranston Fire Departments, Lifespan, the Hospital Association of Rhode Island and Bay Crane Northeast.

If anything, this is probably a symbol of the excessiveness of American culture. We live in a society where excessive obesity is completely normal/acceptable, and our unhealthy lifestyles are fueled by fast food chains and a plethora of processed foods. But considering the fact that the American society is predominantly urban and working, how can we shift away from this lifestyle based on conveniency to a healthier, more wholesome society? Is it even possible?

  1. 1000 POUNDS?! Woooooweeeee. Although this does raise a question that we've been asking for years: will obesity decrease, and why/how is it so prominent in the U.S.? One thing for sure, most other countries give smaller amounts of food, and usually have a healthier base.
The U.S., however, not so much. Maybe it's the fact that our country doesn't care as much, or something of the sort.

  2. Yes, obesity is considered normal here, but I have to disagree with you about excessive obesity. Obviously it is not the norm to weigh as much as this man. Just the fact that he got a whole news article is a key clue. Also, if weighing 1000 pounds was normal, it wouldn't be referred to as "excessive obesity".

  3. It makes me sad to think that this man will never be able to experience a fulfilling life because of the restrictions his weight puts on him.
