HOMELESS MAN REDISCOVERS IDENTITY AND GETS FAT CASH

CURRENT EVENT BY LAURA WALTON
ORIGINAL STORY BY BEN BRUMFIELD

John Helinski was homeless and nameless for three years. No identification, no Social Security card and only a box to live on. Suddenly, he's set to buy his own place and collect a nice pension. Helinski hit it big thanks to the Social Security Administration, and a big-hearted cop and a case worker determined to untangle major bureaucracy. The process was pretty tedious having to find his birth certificate even though he is polish born and had his original papers stolen. A ribbon in the sky allowed John to remember that he had a bank account in Landmark Bank which is now Bank of America. John was excited to learn that his account has grown over years and now he plans on buying a home. This is important to US HISTORY because it proves that as many scary stories there are about social security, this story shows that good things can happen when working with the system.
