Blue Bell - Elisa Weich p. 5

After 100 years of blessing our shelves with its creamy goodness, Blue Bell Ice cream has been forced to recall all of its products because of an outbreak of the deadly pathogen, Listeria.  The recall has spanned to stores in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wyoming and international locations.  There have been ten cases of Listeria illnesses connected to Blue Bell Ice cream since 2010, so the recall of products and testing of all products to be released in the future has become essential for the Southern based company.

This outbreak of Listeria has caused a public, or social, uproar because it has posed problems with public health, specifically for pregnant mothers and their infants, the elderly, and people whose immune systems have been weakened.  There is no doubt that the reason Blue Bell recalled its products was more to save face than to save lives, but they recalled everything no matter how you look it, so this will certainly have an economic effect as well as the aforementioned social effect.
