Dallas hospital diagnoses first patient with Ebola Brett Akop

The Centers for Disease Control have officially confirmed the first case of the deadly ebola virus to enter the United States; in Dallas nonetheless. This is a very terrifying circumstance because ebola has never before been in the US and the fatal disease is highly contagious. The man, left unnamed, has had the virus in his system since approximately SEPTEMBER 19, he didn't show symptoms until about a week later. "The man left Liberia Sept. 19 and arrived in the USA the next day but had no symptoms when leaving Africa or arriving here, said Thomas Frieden, the CDC director. The patient became sick Sept. 24, and he sought care two days later. He was sent home but returned to a hospital and was admitted Sept. 28. Frieden did not reveal the man's nationality but said he came to the USA to visit relatives." Its horrifying to know that such a disease has entered our everyday lives and we have yet to find a definite cure. No American has built up any sort of defense or immunity to the disease because we have never encountered such a catastrophic predicament, I'm honesty a little scared as to what comes next because there are many different ways this situation can and will be handled. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/09/30/dallas-ebola-patient/16496665/

Superhero Mom! Jazmin Garcia (2nd Period)

https://screen.yahoo.com/cute-and-inspiring/inland-empire-mother-makes-ultimate-012500439.html

A 24 year old California mom made the ultimate sacrifice for her newborn daughter when she refused treatment for her bone cancer. Doctors told her to begin chemotherapy immediately while pregnant, but that would mean her baby wouldn't make it. Ashley Bridges was only 10 weeks pregnant when she found out about her diagnosis. She felt that she shouldn't kill a healthy baby just because she's sick. At 8 months, doctors told Bridges that the cancer will spread if she delays the treatment any longer and that her sickness was terminal, so she had to deliver Paisley immediately so she could start her treatment. She was still given a year to live regardless of her countless treatments. She feels like she's tried so hard to keep Paisley safe and do the minimum to keep her healthy only to find out that she's not going to see her grow up. Bridges also has a 6 year old who told her "if you pass away, I want to come with you." Friends and family have been helping Bridges take care of Paisley during the day and her fiancé, who is in the military, takes the night shift. Bridges believes that she's not supposed to be here (on Earth) and that her baby is.

My thoughts while reading this was just so upsetting. It's hard to believe that a baby is going to lose a mom so soon. But what she did has to be the most unbelievable thing I've ever read about. The best thing a mom can give is love and she surely delivered. She seemed like such a good mom seeing that her little boy wanted to come with her when she does pass away. It's going to be hard for baby Paisley, but hopefully she'll learn to be as strong as her mother.

School Shooting Suspect in Custody by Corran Nolan

The suspect involved in a school shooting in Kentucky's Fern Creek High School has been brought into custody. The shooting, which happened Tuesday afternoon, took place at Fern Creek High School in Louisville Kentucky, just inside the building. Luckily, only one student was brought to the hospital, though their injury was not life-threatening. The suspect was described as "about 6-foot-5, wearing a grey hoodie, black pants with a grey stripe, and about 15 or 16 years old." It is unknown whether he attended the school, which was put on lockdown along with other schools in the area.

The recent influx of school shootings, many of which are and were much worse than this, is a growing problem which has to be addressed. Schools are places of learning and development for kids, and neither they nor their parents should have to worry about whether they will be shot while attending it. Problems like this can only TRULY be stopped by better security and mental care at and for children and young adults who attend school and college, preventing any more tragedies from occurring.

Ebola in Dallas- Iris Hughey p.5

Recently, a man that arrived in Dallas, Texas from Liberia has been confirmed to have Ebola. This is the first case of Ebola to ever be diagnosed in the United States. The man, whom authorites declined to name or say if he is American, is currently under "strict isolation" at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. In the past years Ebola has killed up to 90% of those infected, but the death rate in the current outbreak is closer to 60% due to early treatment. Although Ebola is highly contagious and deadly, it can only be spread though contact with bodily fluids. Dallas County Health and Human Services Director Zachary Thompson assures North Texans that it is "not a situation where you go to the grocery store and you get infected with the virus."

I think it is very terrifying that Ebola is in the United States at all, let alone, Dallas. But, I do believe that it will be contained and eliminated in the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. It is highly unlikely that it could have spread to others (due to the only way it can be spread) and don't think it will go any further than this unnamed man.

Police in hunt for Pennsylvania trooper ambush suspect find pipe bombs-Josh Rudes Pd.4

Troopers searching for Eric Frein, a man accused of killing a state trooper and wounding another outside the trooper's barracks, found two potentially harmful pipe bombs in the Pennsylvania woods. Frein has been on the run since the shootings on Sept. 12, and he was forced to surrender today. The bombs were not deployed.

History gets "Botoxed" in Colorado By Heather McKay 2nd

In Colorado, the board of education is looking too change their schools' curriculum to exclude any and all history of civil disobedience. The students are protesting (which is quite ironic) but they are right! Taking out all of those instances not only changes and covers up important history, but it makes people studying history feel as if people can not stand up to the government. This takes away so much power from the people and I do not agree with it. It is not humbling, but degrading and it practically changes our course of history, because changes were always spurred on my civil disobedience.

Suspect for Missing Women- Quentin Noble

An article by Maria Castillo of cnn is about to missing females. It is not about they are missing, but it is about the man who is linked to the crime. These females have been missing for some time, but recently a man has been linked to the missing women by dna. The first woman went missing in 2009 and the second just recently. They both have gone missing from Virginia universities.
The purpose about this article is to tell about the man who has possibly been kidnapping these females. It is an effective article, but there is no for sure proof in the link yet. Authorities are offering $100,000 for any information. http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/30/justice/virginia-missing-women/index.html?c=us

Wal-Mart vs. Tracy Morgan -Pearson Chambers

Walmart says Tracy Morgan wasn't wearing his seatbelt during a New Jersey wreck that took the life of his good friend and mentor, 62-year-old comedian James McNair. The same accident, which took place in June, left the former "30 Rock" star with serious injuries.

Morgan had been traveling with McNair and several others inside a limo bus when it was struck from behind by Walmart driver Kevin Roper, 35, who had traveled more than 700 miles from his home in Georgia to a Walmart facility in Delaware before beginning his shift.

In legal documents filed in a New Jersey court Monday and obtained by the Hollywood Reporter, Walmart says that Morgan's injuries "were caused, in whole or in part, by plaintiffs' failure to properly wear an appropriate available seatbelt restraint device."

Morgan, 45, was in critical condition for several days following the June 7 crash. He suffered a broken leg as well as broken ribs and spent over a month in rehabilitation facility after the accident.

Morgan's attorneys filed a lawsuit against Walmart in July, claiming that the retail giant was criminally negligent in allowing Roper to operate a vehicle after already being on the road for hours.

Roper is now facing death by auto and four counts of assault by auto criminal charges in New Jersey over the crash.

Umbrella Revolution -Pearson Chambers 6th

HONG KONG — Pro-democracy protesters took to the streets Tuesday in a growing confrontation with China over the financial hub's future as either an enclave of freedom or another communist-controlled city.

Protest leaders set a Wednesday deadline for a response from the government to their demands for reforms and said they would soon announce new civil disobedience plans.

Some protesters are already labeling the movement "the umbrella revolution" for the umbrellas many are holding to deflect pepper spray and tear gas that was lobbed by police on Sunday night.

Hong Kong, once a British territory, is fighting for democracy. They are trying to avoid falling under China's crazy communist system.

United Nations Adopts Resolution to Protect LGBTQ+ Rights - Vittorio Chillemi

Several Latin American and European countries have pushed forward a resolution to protect LGBT rights around the world. The international body in Geneva approved the resolution by a 25-14 vote margin. Most countries voted for the resolution, with those against being mostly comprised of Russia, Islamic and African states. The resolution was first drafted by Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Colombia, which are mostly left-leaning states who are liberal by Unites States' standards. Many Muslim and fundamentalist African states argued that the decision would "corrupt morals" and "disrespect their culture."

As a gay teen, this move for LGBTQ rights makes me a bit happier, and I'm glad to know that my country is a big supporter of gay rights.

Julian Assange appears in the United States live onstage - as a hologram (Avery Alexander 6th period)

http://news.yahoo.com/julian-assange-hologram-125514035.html

The co-founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange appeared in Nantucket, Massachusetts at a summit as a hologram from Ecuadorian Embassy in London, on September 29th. He was interviewed by a filmmaker named Eugene Jarecki. Assange talked about how he was forced into asylum and reiterated his criticism about Google. The hologram was produced by Hologram USA. He was granted asylum so he could avoid being questioned about cases where he allegedly raped and molested.

He is angry about his forced asylum because it has now effected his family and staff. He was granted asylum in 2012 by Ecuador's foreign minister. Of course Wiki-companies are rivals with Google, which is why I think he is criticizing Google. He basically says that there is nothing special about Google and never compares or mentions Wikileaks.

Six People Dead in Car Accident by Destiny Ramirez 4th Period WEEK 1

Was Posted on Monday, September 1, 2014***

A fatal car accident occurred Sunday night leaving all six passengers dead. The 20-year-old driver lost control of the car when the back tire hit the curb, causing the car to cross over three lanes and slam right into a tree. Police reported that four of the people died at the scene and the other two died shortly after being taken to Baylor Hospital. We later founded out that three of the victims were students at Justin F. Kimball High School. Dallas ISD claims that are truly upset over the three deaths of their students. Lynn Payne, a woman driving down the same road that night, told police and NBC News channel 5 that she was driving behind the car when the driver crashed. Payne said, “. He was doing at least 100 miles per hour…’oh my god, if he don’t slow that car down something is going to happen.’”
I think what happened was awful. None of the people that died that night were even intoxicated, and the driver was less than a year away form turning 21. Those people and kids still had their whole lives ahead of them. I feel like that just wanted to have a little fun that night considering there was no work or school the next day, so they decided to play speed racers from one light to the next. There are a lot of ways you can hang out and have fun but that wasn’t/isn’t the way to do it.

"Baby Dreamer" Arrested in Fresno, California By Destiny Ramirez 4th Period

Destiny Rico, also know as "baby dreamer", was recently arrested for beating and stripping a woman. After her and her bulldog gang targeted a woman, Rico had a teenage boy record the whole scene from beginning to end. Rico first met the girl in an empty lot and started to punch and pull on the woman's hair. After she forced the woman out of her clothes and make had her walk home naked. The whole time the woman was walking home, bulldog gang was barking and laughing historically at the woman. The video was soon after uploaded to Facebook and went viral. Rico was arrested along with two other people.

I don't think publicly shaming anyone is right in any case. I think Rico's moral were very out of line and might have mental issues and if so gets help. I hope that the victim here does get the justice she deserves and hopefully Rico will see she was out of line.

Man with horns and tattoo of "666" charged first degree murder of 3 men (vanessa de la cruz )

Caius Veiovis a 34 year old man from Pittsfield, Massachusetts was convicted of a crime, mysteriously enough he was found too have implants of horns on his head.  He was convicted for the murder of three men, 2 of the men were his partners in a crime. Another man was too testify against him in court and ended killing all who had any evidence of any sort to pin against him. He told the jury " I'll see you in hell" and was said to have the tattoo of 666 on his forehead. Already serving 7 years in Maine prison "Caius Veivovis" still can not learn from his mistakes and is sentenced to life in prison without parole in conviction of first degree murder.

This man is crazy he has freaking horns on his head and a 666 tattoo who does that? well he clearly didn't learn from his first mistake and is finally punished for his actions. The world is full of these people and we really need to watch out.

Intruder into the white house By: Sharon cordon 4th period

Omar Gonzales, 42 year old iraq war veteran jumped over the White House fence and actually made it farther than just into the east room of the white house. The secret Service had previously stated that he was stopped after entering the front door of the North Portico.
He was mainly in the first floor, ran past a stairway that lead up to the first family's residence and was ultimately stopped at the far southern end of the east room and reached the doorway to the green room.
i believe this really dangerous, if he could get in easily, then that means anyone could get in easily as well. everything seems really suspicious as well. i personally think he had the help from a guard to get in otherwise he should've been caught earlier.

Over fifty sharks found dead on the shores of Oak Island by Jonell Williams, 2nd Period

On Sunday morning Michael Boswell, a local resident of the Brunswick County stumbled upon a dozen dead sharks on the shores of Oak Island. The sizes of the sharks ranged from one foot to five feet. The exact cause of the death of the sharks is unknown and is presently under investigation by the NC Division of Marine Fisheries. Although, officials have speculated that by-catch might be a possible cause. By-catch is the catching of an unwanted marine organism while fishing for another organism, such as catching tuna with a net but accidentally catching a dolphin. Additionally, the dumping of dead fish on beach property is illegal and fishing is only allowed for consumption or recreational catch and release. The Oak Island mayor, Betty Wallace has gotten involved as well and is helping by directing the town staff and making sure it does not become a public health issue.
The sudden death of over 50 sharks is a great cause of concern for marine life and their ecosystem. This alerting news reminded me of the mass bird deaths that occurred only a few years ago and now during present day. The reason for these articles is to bring awareness of a probable human-induced environmental mistake that caused the death of a multitude of sharks. I feel that a probable cause might be a change in the composition of the water because of a chemical spill. The authors of the articles I summarized are Ben Powell and Helen Holt. Ben Powell's article contained concrete information and was direct in its approach to news telling, while Holt's was a little more emotional and brought awareness to the shrinking biodiversity of the sea.

Doctor Poisoning Lover (vanessa de la cruz)

Dr. Ana Maria Gonzalez has been found guilty for poisoning her lover and charged wit aggravated assault. Prosecutors found that she spiked the coffee of Dr. George Blumenscheins with ethylene glycol a chemical found in antifreeze. Both Dr.'s worked as oncologists at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Cancer Center in Houston. Dr. Gonzalez's motivations were that Dr. Blumenschein had a girlfriend and ended up choosing her over Dr. Gonzalez. The poisoning left him with permanent kidney damage and Dr. Gonzalez pleading not guilty could now face life in prison.

This lady is crazy after finding out she is the mistress of this doctor she really thinks he is going to choose her over his girlfriend. Alas thinking that poisoning him would make any things better is extremely mind blowing, its amazing how people in life that are suppose to help others don't and use it for the bad.

Illegal Abortions in Brazil Lead to Thousands of Deaths- Fiona Womack 2nd

Recently, a 27-year-old pregnant woman named Jandira dos Santos Cruz underwent an illegal abortion that ultimately ended in her untimely and unjust death. It is thought that the surgeon maimed the body afterwards in order to stall the identification process. In Brazil, abortion is illegal except in cases of rape, anencephaly (a brain malformation caused by an embryonic defect), or endangerment of the mother’s life, making it nearly impossible for women to have access to safe abortions. Although there are restrictions, it is estimated that between 800,000 and a million women terminate their pregnancies each year, but more than 200,000 of those women end up in the hospital (or in the morgue) from complications. As a result of much religious-based pressure, both female presidential candidates have decided to remain silent on this widespread issue. This isn’t just a problem in Brazil, however.
Personally, as a feminist and a huge supporter of a woman’s right to choose, I am disgusted by the fact that religion plays such a large roll in the election of a president. I find myself thinking often about how many restrictions are imposed on our nation solely because of our evangelical roots. There’s a supposed separation of church and state in this country, but why do we let our personal religious beliefs cloud our compassion and sympathy towards women who may not have another choice? It seems that we support our president based on their likeness to a religious icon; they must be well spoken, have strong morals, oppose controversy; but I don’t remember seeing the church on our ballots. You build a wall of your trite and outdated beliefs and assume that everyone can climb over it, but what about the rape victim or the mother who lives in poverty, or the 15 year old girl who got drunk at a party? How can you deny these women the basic right to have control over their own bodies? Obviously these are my opinions and feel free to oppose them, but I probably won’t take you seriously.

Tracy Morgan sues Walmart??? by Madeline Ibarra Second Period

Former Saturday Night Live comedian Tracy Morgan's lawsuit towards Walmart claims that there was careless and negligent in the operation of the vehicle. Morgan and fellow friends were hit by a Walmart 18 wheeler. This accident killed three others in the limo with Morgan while hospitalizing him. Walmart was not aware that the drivers of the truck had been operating on the road for more than 24 hours, which causes road fatigue. This caused the driver to be less oriented with what was going on around him, preventing the driver from being aware that he was speeding over 20 miles per hour over the speed limit when he collided with Morgan's limo. Walmart claims that the accident was made so horrendous because none of the passengers of the limo were wearing seat belts. In their response to Morgan's lawsuit, they say that the whole incident would have been lessened if they had taken advantage of the safety devices around them. It was also stated that the man who caused the crash was not and in no way affiliated with the Walmart franchise. There has not been a victim appointed yet, but Tracy's 28 page response complaint over the whole situation stirs Walmart to push for and open trial by jury. There is no set court date at this point in time.

We see stars as untouchable and almost omnipotent to all everyday mishappeneings. When there is a tragedy among those we look up to or constantly view on television, it is almost surreal to hear about what has happened. I see it as there are two faults in this case and either cannot be dismissed. Morgan and his friends suffered the greatest damages but were also not abiding by the laws of the road to keep themselves safe. However, there is no dismissing the neglect of the driver  by the company for lack of rest and awareness of his own surroundings. I'm interested to keep up with where this case goes from here and how the two opposing sides state their cases in court.

Azra Zuniga -P.6 lots of reports

Week 4:

"A high school in California is forced to change their mascot due to multiple complaints, stating that their stereotyping of Arabian culture is not only a form of racism, but also a huge deal of disrespect. Students, faculty members, and citizens firmly believe that it is unfair because it is apart of the school's history and held dear to the community."

I believe that the arguments in favor of keeping the Arab mascot are extremely ableist and wrong. Much like Native American mascots, who are painted as savages, wrong. I don't agree with the school board only changing the mascot logo rather than dismissing it as a whole because the activities carried along with the theme of the logo (i.e. belly dancing) are prime examples of cultural appropriation and stereotyping, especially when set at an American football game. I do understand the whole "historical" aspect of it, but history is accompanied by change and it is not O.K. to be blatantly racist.

Week 5:

"A young man is fired from his job and returns promptly afterwards to behead a coworker, then shoots a cop. Coworkers reported that he had been trying to convert them to the Muslim religion, which investigators immediately take the fact that ISIS could have influenced his actions in some way into consideration."

This particular case is infuriating. They are assuming that because this man is Muslim his act of mental insanity was caused by his religion, most likely because of the theory fed to the general public by the American media that "all Muslims are terrorists." Yes, of course ISIS sent out some type of newsletter saying "kill everyone!" without having any strategic plan or motive because they want to be reckless and blow their cover so fast that is gives America even more of a reason to bomb their land once again! (Sarcasm is intended.)
The closing sentence in itself is ridiculous,
"In Oklahoma, investigators are investigating Nolan's social media footprint, trying to determine if this vicious, deadly rage was revenge over a lost job, or a far away conflict that has now hit the homelands."
Also, oh yes! Because an atheist shoots a christian, it is to be assumed that because of their religious differences, he/she killed them because of that! Perfect.

Week 6:

"Thousands are moving to Texas in hopes of finding a beautiful affordable home and enjoying the growth of Texan cities. A state wealthy in oil and increasing in job opportunities everyday, it is a state of great economic achievement and success."

Taking a break from the upsetting events above, I think that it's wonderful that Texas is going through an amazing period of growth and success, where population is rising but job opportunities can easily be found. It's comforting to know that Texas is blossoming as a whole, in many aspects, including culturally, economically, etc... And to be able to live in a state becoming known for great things is interesting.

Here we go again with the ISIS controversy Again... ( JOSE LOPEZ 4th prd.)

Apparently president Obama has under-estimated ISIS. According to a top intelligence official, ISIS has "ruthlessly grown in effectiveness." In a 60 Minutes interview, Obama admitted the U.S. underestimated what had been taking place in Syria.  ISIS is growing and getting stronger, every day. They’ve gained control of more territory and the level of killing they’re doing in that country is absolutely terrible.

"Doctor gets 10 years prison for poisoning lover's coffee" by Alex Norton 4th Period

A Texas cancer doctor was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison after spiking her lover's coffee with a chemical found in antifreeze. Gonzalez-Angulo is a world-renowned breast cancer doctor who worked with Blumenschein at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
The sweet-tasting poison in Blumenschein's black coffee damaged his kidneys. The oncologist testified last week in Harris County District Court that he has only 40% of his kidney function and had to undergo emergency dialysis to survive.
The poisoning likely will shorten his life, he said. Or it could require the need for a kidney transplant in the future.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/09/29/cancer-doctor-poisoned-coffee/16436557/

This is bizarre! I wonder what her motives were and if she intended such serious damage. Considering she is a doctor and probably knows a thing or two about poison, this is alarming.

AA Plane land at DWF

American Airlines had a flight make an emergency landing tonight. Initially the passengers on the plane were horrified as well as the folks on the ground. The plane had a landing gear problem, that had been checked and approved by FAA. However the problem remained and the pilot made an emergency land after circling the area for nearly two hours before landing. The model of the plane had been an older one with considerations of retirement. Thankfully no one was harmed.

Ironically, there have been six that have had to make emergency landing either departing or arriving at DFW. This is a sweet relief compared to the tragic plane accidents that have taken place before.

DOD Now Enlisting Illegal Immigrants! by: Ayla Huff (period 5)

US Troops_Reuters_660.jpg
DOD Now Enlisting Illegal Immigrants!

Fox News has just recently announced on September 26, 2014, The Defense Department is now beginning to allow illegal immigrants to enlist in the military causing "active-duty" soldiers to be cut as a result of budget cuts. Though this may only apply to immigrants with a high skill set and have been a resident of the United States since before the age of 16, the program is recruiting numbers of 1,500 immigrants every year. The reason most likely being the free citizenship, educational aid, and payment provided being granted to those who sign up. "We do not know how many people with the required skills will apply to enter the military and therefore do not have an estimate of how many people this will potentially impact." stated Lt. Commander Nate Christensen, a DOD spokesman.
While allowing illegal immigrants to enlist in something as reliable and trusting as the army, the real main concern is the hundreds of "active-duty" soldiers being let go to abide the budget cut. The reported number of the soldiers has fallen from the high 5,000's to the low 4,000's. This issue has raised much concern about the readiness of the military.
The only prior knowledge I had on the subject was being aware of the fact that illegal immigrants are now being granted many rights the citizens of America have worked very hard to accomplish. I think this subject is diffidently being under rated therefor I support this article shedding light on the topic. I hope this article does open the eyes of American citizens and the government so the issue is addressed, whether it results in kicking the immigrants out or working out a solution helpful to both parties.

Armed MAn Runs Through White House- Glenna Louglin

This article by Dana Bash, Jim Acosta and Deirdre Walsh, is telling about an armed man that some how gets into the White House and isn't caught by security until he runs all the way to the East Room of the White House. White House Intruder Went Farther Than Realized; Margaret Canady 2nd Period

Last week Omar Gonzalez, 42, jumped over the White House fence and invaded the White House. Officials had previously said that Gonzalez was tackled just inside the front doors. However, a new report by Washington Post states that Gonzalez overpowered an officer at the front door and made it all the way to the East Room before being tackled by guards.
Gonzalez was allegedly carrying a knife, and had a hatchet and ammunition inside of his car. Secret Service is being questioned and prompted for allowing the man to breach security and get so far inside the White House.
Apparently White House staff had requested for the alarm system to be muted, and the guard at the front door was not immediately notified of the intruder.

When I first read this article last week, I hadn't thought much of it: I assumed the man was just a radical guy who wanting to see the inside of the White House. But with this new report, and the fact that he had weapons in his possession, suddenly I am much more alert and shocked at the lax state of security. Why was the alarm muted in the first place? What if Gonzalez had been able to initiate a serious attack? Hopefully the Secret Service will fix this lag in communication and be more on top of the security.

Why Everybody is Moving to Texas by Milan Hamilton

More Americans have moved to Texas in recent years than any other state. Texas' net gain was over 387,000 in the last Census and Austin was the fastest growing city. The number 1 reason for the moves is jobs, with affordable housing running a very close second. Texas has a lot of cheap land around the cities and easy regulations that allow them to build land quickly, making it a clear advantage. All of the major cities in Texas were also among the top 20 fastest growing cites. Austin, at number 1, has an unemployment rate of only 4.6% and the jobs are well paid. The median income is about $75,000, which is about 20% higher than the median national income. Because of these great qualities and strong economies, Texas became even more attractive for people looking to relocate.

I really thought this was interesting because it shows you how people look for new places to move. Of course I've always loved Texas as a state, but never really new much about the enormous pull factors it has for other Americans. If I didn't already live here, I'd want to live here too!

The man who jumped the White House fence earlier this month and breached the mansion's doors actually made it farther than originally thought, officials said Monday. Omar Gonzalez, a 42-year-old Iraq war veteran who had a knife in his pocket, overcame one Secret Service officer and ran into the East Room of the White House, where he was then subdued, a federal law enforcement said.Rep. Jason Chaffetz, who was provided the information by whistleblowers during his congressional investigation into the incident, also confirmed the details of what now appears to be a wild chase through the main floor of the White House, first reported by the Washington post

The Secret Service had previously stated that Gonzalez was stopped after entering the front door of the North Portico.

It's mind boggling that a man who was already under the government eye was able to get so close to one of the most surveyed buildings in the United States. The very place where the president makes some of the nations most important decisions. And it's not like this was some huge elaborate plan that took years in the making, yet a fairly average man was able to accomplish this.

Child Shot in Miami Night Club by Yasmine B (5th period)

In this very short article, it headlines how a child of only eleven years was shot in a famous nightclub in Miami, called The Spot. This child is one of the fifteen other people that were also injured. Witnesses state that at least one hundred shots were fired directly at the nightclub and it seems that nothing or no one can be identified as the instigator. The Miami Dade police is still trying to figure out what happened here.
The only thing that strikes me peculiar about this is that a child of such a young age was injured. Many questions come into play. First of all, what was an eleven year old doing at a nightclub, which has an age restriction of being at least 21 years old? What caused the shots to be fired? And who is responsible for this? Whatever the answers are, some justice needs to be served.

Pro-Democracy Protest in Hong Kong - Froy G 7th

http://m.theweek.com/speedreads/index/268937/speedreads-hong-kong-protesters-defy-police-expand-pro-democracy-protest

In Hong Kong, uprisings have occurred in pursuit of a more democratically-run state. Largely students and young people, the Hong Kong citizens gathered on masses to protest recent constricting laws passed by the Chinese Gov. Ever since Hong Kong was given back to china by the British, there has been a large amount of friction with the city-state. Hopefully China learns to move in a more democratic direction in the future and takes with them the lesson that in today's world, individual freedom is highly valuable and needed to create a more progressive world. China has taken steps in the past, leaving their communist roots with free economic zones. Perhaps this will open the government's eyes to more personal liberty for their citizens.

Construction Workers Caught in Building Collapse - Sophia Davison

CNN and Meghan McCorkell tell us about a currently mysterious mishap in Baltimore that occurred just a few days ago. When mid-day, a building on S. Paca collapsed, four men barely escaping and two men stuck within the debris, fire-fighters and rescue teams came to the aid of these men. Apparently an onlooker, Norman Finnance, witnessed the entire ordeal and gave an account of what happened. Finnance told the rescue workers that he ran around the building, hearing shouts from one of the trapped workers, who was not seriously injured and attempting to dig out his friend from the rubble. According to the worker, his friend had fallen through the first floor into the basement and been trapped by falling debris. After four hours of work and a call to the Baltimore City Fire, the buried worker was found and rushed to the hospital to be given immediate medical attention.
Over the past few weeks, gossip and questions had been circulating around the construction site and the motives around some of the construction workers' actions. Neighbors had seen some of the workers digging out the basement the past few days, and a full investigation has been set in action as to the mysterious nature of the site. After such an ordeal, the rescued worker has been sent for Shock Trauma treatment, with a positive prospect at healing from the life-threatening injuries suffered.

Suspect in U.V.A Case Linked to 2009 Homicide

Jesse Matthew was arrested in Galveston, TX after being a suspect for the abduction of student of University of Virginia. He has also now been traced back to another abduction and murder in 2009. It was not him but led to another person. His family is happy that they got the other person in the different case but can not believe it took this one to find for the others. The police are now looking into different cases and are trying to see if Matthew is responsible.

It is very hard to believe of the murder but it also hard to believe the police still have trouble finding all other murderers. It is difficult to feel safe with all these harmful people on the lose.

Family of Five Dies Mysteriously -Myles Bennett

Saturday night, a man walked into his parents' house to find his parents and his three siblings dead in a bedroom in their duplex. The Department of Public Safety has ruled out any thoughts of violence after seeing the autopsy results. When the investigators entered the house, they did not detect carbon monoxide, but the doors were left open so that may play a part in that. They are testing the blood and will keep the media updated when they find out any more news.

Source: http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/29/us/utah-family-deaths/index.html?hpt=us_t2

Analysis: I was wondering if someone else was living in the duplex, why were they not affected if it was carbon monoxide? Also, who would want to poison them? Did they have any enemies? Why would someone want to murder an entire family?

ATM Fees Rise - Elisa Weich P. 5

In a new surge of bank and ATM fees, a study has shown that it now costs an average of $4.35 for a person to get their own money from an out of network ATM.  Over the past year, these fees for withdrawing money from an ATM not associated with your bank have risen 5%, partially in part to people actively avoiding withdrawals away from their own banks.  When people avoid the ATM fee it causes banks to lose money, so they have had to raise these rates 23% over the past five years.

I think that these ATM fees are becoming somewhat redundant in a way. While there is an understandable transfer fee for getting money from a different bank, these fees are turning into a source of revenue for the banks.  Originally, banks created ATMs to cut down on the amount of teller salaries they had to pay out, so they saved money and continue to save in this way even today.  With these added fees, banks are making money off of an endeavor that was not originally meant for profit.

History Erasers- Lauren Kuehmeier, Period 2

This week hundreds of students in Colorado decide to walk out of class in order to protest the conservative-leaning Jefferson County board of education who are trying to edit and cast history events in a new light. Why would they do this? They say they are trying to promote patriotism, respect for authority and free enterprise. But all this really means civil rights activists like Susan B. Anthony and Dr. Martin Luther King will be seen as unpatriotic, trouble makers. So the people who go against the law to do good for our society are put on the same level as criminals.

Ultimately, this is censorship. It's censorship to make our sometimes dark history look better than it was and give it more justification. It isn't the government's job or any school board to give their opinions in a textbook. We should be given the truth. We need to be given the truth and all the details no matter how horrible because when we aren't given it we can't learn from it. And if they create their perfectly ignorant student we can expect history to repeat itself.

Five Family Members in Utah Mysteriously Die -Hannah Clifford 5th Period

http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/29/us/utah-family-deaths/index.html?c=us&page=1

In Utah, five family members died while all in the same room of their house. Investigators found no sign of struggle or violence. One of the sons found the bodies in a bedroom on Saturday night. Because there is no evidence to suggest anything about their deaths, the next step is to take blood samples. The firefighters who entered the house were wearing equipment made to detect carbon monoxide, but there was no sign of a buildup. The doors were open, so there is a possibility the gas could've escaped by then. The only way to find out is wait for further results.

When I began to read this article, I thought of course it was carbon monoxide. But then they went on to say that there was no trace of the gas. However, I can't see any other way they could've died. My theory is that maybe there was a gas buildup, they died, and somehow the doors were opened and the gas escaped.

Officials: Fence jumper made it into East Room of White House- Joseph Katinas 2nd Period

The man who jumped the White House fence earlier this month and breached the mansion's doors actually made it farther than originally thought, officials said Monday. White House fence jumper has PTSD, former stepson says Did Secret Service mishandle shooting? Omar Gonzalez, a 42-year-old Iraq war veteran who had a knife in his pocket, overcame one Secret Service officer and ran into the East Room of the White House, where he was then subdued, a federal law enforcement said. Rep. Jason Chaffetz, who was provided the information by whistleblowers during his congressional investigation into the incident, also confirmed the details of what now looks to be a wild chase through the main floor of the White House, first reported by the Washington Post. The Secret Service had previously stated that Gonzalez was stopped after entering the front door of the North Portico. Gonzalez ran through much of the main floor, past a stairway that leads up to the first family's residence, and was ultimately stopped at the far southern end of the East Room. He also reached the doorway to the Green Room, an area that looks out on the South Lawn. No shots were fired inside the White House, the federal law official said. I think this article is very interesting. Honestly, I didn't even know there was a man in the White House earlier this month. Howvever, my condolences go out to the Obama family and others located in the building. It also makes more sense to me now how he was able to do this as the intruder was an Iraq-War veteran. I think maybe that he could have been angry with Obama for starting a new campaign in Iraq, but maybe further questioning will answer that. I wish that we could live peacefully with our world leaders and others but this shows that we need more security around the White House. http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/29/politics/wh-fence-jumper/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

5 Family Members Die Mysteriously Inside Utah Home - Corsica Steding

Last Saturday night, the bodies of 5 family members were discovered by one of their relatives.  They've been identified as father Benjamin Strack, 37; mother Kristi Strack, 36; son Benson Strack,14; daughter Emery Strack, 12; and son Zion Strack, 11.  The relative that found them was in fact a son of the deceased couple.  The cause of death is unknown.  Autopsies ruled out any kind of violent assault.  Firefighters tested the air for carbon dioxide, but did not find any sign of it.  This, however, does not rule out carbon dioxide due to the wind from a storm that could've cleared out the gas.  The peculiar thing about this case is that the family had three pets that were there, and the pets were perfectly fine.

Holly Yan wrote this article for CNN on September 29th.  Yan wrote this article in order to update anyone who's following the story, and inform anyone in the public interested in the case.  Before reading this article, I had heard about tragic events regarding carbon dioxide poisoning.  This case is a bit peculiar though, seeing as there is so much mystery surrounding it.  I hope they find out what happened to this poor family, and that their surviving son is taken care of.

Mysterious Death of Utah Family- Katelyn Cook Pd.3

Five family members, including three children, were discovered dead in their house over the weekend. A son of the family discovered them on Saturday, September 27 and called the police. There were no signs of violence, murder, or trauma to the bodies. Medical examiners plan to investigate by analyzing blood samples in order to find out what caused their death. Firefighters tested for carbon monoxide in the home, but there was no sign of a buildup. Police say this doesn't rule out the theory though since the gas could have escaped when the door was opened. I do not believe that carbon monoxide was the cause of their death since the family's three pets all survived.

StealthGenie has problems. Trevor Haueisen 6th

The CEO of InvoCode is being charged for allegedly selling spyware for the iPhone, Android and Blackberry. The app in discussion, StealthGenie, allows it's user to intercept phone calls, text messages and emails, and eavesdrop on offline conversations happening within a few yards of the app owner. The company markets the product to "suspicious spouses and lovers" The FBI Assistant Director in Charge, Andrew McCabe told DOJ release that “This application allegedly equips potential stalkers and criminals with a means to invade an individual’s confidential communications. They do this not by breaking into their homes or offices, but by physically installing spyware on unwitting victim’s phones and illegally tracking an individual’s every move. As technology continues to evolve, the FBI will investigate and bring to justice those who use illegal means to monitor and track individuals without their knowledge.”

I just find this really ironic because tapping into our phone calls and reading our emails/texts is exactly Edward Snowden told us the NSA was doing. Now our criminal justice system is basically coming out and saying it's wrong. This honestly kind of makes the U.S. seem very hypocritical, don't you think? I totally see why this is a bad idea though, because like they said, this app would be extremely dangerous if it got into the hands of stalkers and other criminals.

Realtor Missing After House Showing

By: Blythe Taylor 3rd Period

On Thursday a Conway Arkansas Realtor named Beverly Carter went to show a home in the city of Scott, but never returned home. This mysterious disappearance of the 49-year-old resonated among fellow Realtors, who posted their own fears on a Facebook page set up for sharing information about her case.
The hashtag #FindBeverly has had a huge impact, and the Facebook page about Carters disappearance was followed by more than 18,000 people as of Sunday evening. The page is filled with prayers for Beverly and her family, but also is a sounding board for Realtors from across the country on the issue of safety in their profession.
This has caused an outburst of tons of people and also Realtors. People are now arguing for Realtors to carry guns while showing homes, and others are favoring pepper spray. Some Realtors are now sharing a tip to never do a house showing alone. It is unfortunate that this had to happen, but it now will show that Realtors need to be more cautious on things like this. Hopefully Beverly Carter will be found soon and able to go home to her son and husband.

Beheading In Oklahoma - Veronica Nichols 2nd period

A man in Oklahoma, after being fired from his job, went back and allegedly beheaded a woman and attacked another before he was shot by the company CEO who also happened to be a reserve Deputy. The suspect Alton Nolen, had images of Osama Bin Laden and Beheadings on his Facebook page. Despite this law enforcement has stated that there he appears not to have been motivated by terrorism.

He will be charged with both first degree Murder and first degree murder. His family members and people who knew him were all very shocked. They all said that he had no violent tendencies and violence was not even close to being a part of his personality. Although it seems as if his family and friends may have just been turning a blind eye considering the fact that Nolen has been arrested multiple time and has even been reported to have been involved in a violent skirmish with an officer.

This story in my opinion shows what some people are really capable of, at any age. You hear of school shootings and stabbings all the time. I think people assume things like that happen so often because those people have a low maturity level but i think stories like this really show that anyone is capable of random acts of intense violence.

Man Beheads Woman After Converting to Islam- Kennedi Mayes 2nd period

An Oklahoma man, Alton Nolen, was arrested after assaulting coworkers because they refused to convert to Islam. Nolen is a recent convert to the faith and felt the need to stab one female several times, then behead her, then he stabbed another woman who is now recovering. He stopped after a police officer shot him down. Investigators have discovered that he was jailed in 2011 for assault and battery on a police officer and escape from detention. He was released from prison in 2013 and adopted the Islamic faith not long after. On his Facebook page, Nolen had seemed to take a sudden interest in Islamic propaganda and liked several pictures regarding killing people who refused to acknowledge their god as the only god. His mother took to Facebook and apologized for her son's behavior the Sunday after the incident apologizing to the families of the victims and stating that he isn't the same person and she no longer knows who he is.

This is a frightening story and it seriously makes me question the state of America. I know we're supposed to be a land of the free and home of the brave, but maybe there should be some exceptions. Islam seems to be corrupting America and Americans everyday. I am severely concerned with the well being and safety of this nation. My condolences are sent out to the families that lost a member and have wounded.

Family Mysteriously Dies -Hadassah Lai

Over the weekend in Utah, a family of five was mysteriously found dead in their house. There were no signs of foul play, violence, or trauma. The bodies consisted of father, Benjamin Strack, mother, Kristi Strack, daughter, Emery Strack, son, Benson Strack, and son, Zion Strack. Their bodies were found by another son, and they were immediately sent for autopsies to check for any violence. The results did not prove anything. Firefighters had dressed in special equipment while entering their house in case they were gassed by carbon monoxide. The test did not necessarily rule out being gassed since the windows were open and there had been a storm which might have blown away all the gases. The three pets that the family owned all survived, which discouraged that they were gassed. The police are now waiting for test results.

I think this a very sad yet frightening event. The scariest thing is when you don't know how something happened, but I hope the doctors and police can figure out this case. I hope this mystery gets solved soon. My prayers go out for the family's friends, and their son.

Can the Arrest in Hannah Graham case solve another case? - Noe Perales

the arrest of jesse mathew, the suspect in the disappearance of university of virginia student hannah graham, has resulted in a significant break in the 2009 death of another young woman in the same area, police said.

virginia state police say there is a new forensic link between the hannah graham case and the death of morgan harrington, a 20-year old virginia tech student, who went missing after attending a metallica concert in charlottesville in october 2009. her remains were found on a farm months later.

almost from the start, speculation was raised about the possibility of a concoction between grahams disappearance and harringtons death.

15 people, many teenagers, wounded in Miami nightclub shooting by Harrison Epstein

http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/28/us/miami-florida-teen-nightclub-shooting/index.html?hpt=us_c2

Early Sunday morning, at a small nightclub in Miami, there was a large shooting of a group of teenagers within said nightclub. As of now the police cannot find any motive for this shooting but are even more baffled why so many teens were out past curfew and why they all happened to be at that specific nightclub. While no one was killed, 15 teens were injured, their ages ranging from 11 to 25. When the authorities arrived there were so many people frantically running around that it was difficult for the ER men to help those who truly needed the help.

Really? A group of teenagers? What could one possibly gain from harming a group of teens? Seriously, answer the question in the comments, I am curious. Anyway I find it very odd that there were so many teens in one place past curfew, there were over 100 teens and a huge number of them were under the age of 18 so they were braking curfew laws. This once again shows how lax some US cities are about their laws and how it can be almost too easy to get around them.

4 Girls killed By Megan Darlington

A Catastrophic event happened late Friday night near Davis, Oklahoma. "An 18-wheel truck veered into oncoming traffic on a major interstate highway and crashed into the side of a North Texas team bus," the bus driven by a coach had 15 players aboard. Four players were killed, Meagan Richardson, 19, Brooke Deckard, 20, Katelynn Woodlee, 18, and Jaiden Pelton, 20.
The entire "close-knit" Texas community college was incredibly torn by this loss, as would anyone else. Family found dead inside their Utah home - Lindsey Galvan 4th period

5 members of a family were found dead in their home this past weekend. Officials identified the deceased relatives as father Benjamin Strack, 37; mother Kristi Strack, 36; son Benson Strack,14; daughter Emery Strack, 12; and son Zion Strack, 11. There were no signs of trauma of violence in the autopsies. They had pets who survived so police are not sure if their deaths had to do with carbon monoxide gas. All five bodies were found in one bedroom of a duplex, CNN affiliate KUTV reported.

I really hope police find the person responsible for the death of this family. It makes me angry to know there are heartless people out there who have the potential of murdering an entire family. From my understanding there is a son who was not home the time of the murder. My condolences go out to the young man, for I would be devastated if I were ever in that predicament.

The Domino Effect of Murder? By Daizha Lankford

When something happens in a community, usually it has an effect on another event. We know this to be true in many cases of life, but what about murder?  So when a missing persons case has the possibility to solve other murders, it is quite important that all of the dots be connected. The Article by Mario Castillo, discusses the arrest of one man that may lead to the discovery of why another murder happened. Jesse Mathews the suspect in the disappearance of Virginia Tech Student Hannah Graham, has seemed to connect to a murder of another woman, a rape and abduction of another woman, and possible 2 other murders in the same area. The police are currently looking for a pattern to link not only the murders but the suspect to the crimes committed. All the women who have gone missing are between 17 and 20 years old, all taken from the same area, and later found scattered in random places around the city. Whoever this person is, I hope they are brought to justice! No more young girls should have to go through this terror!

Five more bodies found on Japan's Mount Ontake after eruption

Five more lifeless bodies have been found on the slopes of Japan's Mount Ontake, bringing the total number of presumed dead in a volcanic eruption Saturday to 36.

Twenty-four bodies still remain on the mountain, while 12 have been recovered, identified and pronounced dead, Nagano Prefecture Police said Monday.

The search for more missing hikers has been suspended due to dangerous conditions at summit. Hydrogen sulfide gas is being spewed from the mountain, police said, putting rescuers in danger.

The volcano in central Japan unleashed a huge cloud of ash late Saturday morning that billowed down the mountainside and engulfed hikers in its path. Witnesses described hearing a sound like thunder when the eruption began.

In recent years, most people haves moved into Texas. The reason behind this great increase of people in the state is due to job opportunities. Most of said jobs are located in cities such as Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and Fort Worth. It's wonderful to hear that Texas is able to supply thousands of people with jobs and homes. In Austin, the unemployment rate is 4.7%. This is a reassuring fact that our economy is improving and that Texas is one of the many states initiating this great improvement.

Sugar Babies...?- Td Simons 2 pd

Serena Cervantes, like many other college graduates, struggles to pay her college debt. So she works many small jobs, one including a dating website called SeekingArrangement.com. This website was created by Brandon Wade, a MIT graduate who met his wife, 27, on the site. This site connects wealthy men with women who need financial support. On the woman’s profile they will list their age, a personal description, a picture and how much they charge for dates. The men can either pay them by giving an allowance or by giving them fancy gifts or expensive trips. The average monthly allowance that the sugar daddies (wealthy men) pay their dates is around $3,000. Many ask if this is prostitution in another form. The users state that it is not, because there is no expectation to engage in sexual conduct. The users have admitted to sometimes being intimate, but they claim that it’s not why they pay. However, not all dates have a happy ending. In the case of Alice Tichleman, a sugar baby, hers ended in murder or so they believe.

This article was written by Stephanie Goldbreg from CNN. The author’s point of view leaned towards disapproval of the website. You could tell because she would emphasize certain points that gave the sugar babies/sugar daddies an unpleasant image. I view this site as an easier and legal way to prostitution. I do understand the sugar babies reasoning, but I believe that they are degrading themselves and other women through this site.

Senator comes out during speech- Jack O'Connor Period 6

Lawmakers gathered in the Pennsylvania state capital in Harrisburg on Tuesday to propose a major change in the state's hate crime law to extend protection to those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Senator Jim Ferlo of Pittsburgh casually mentioned his sexuality in a speech, "Hundreds of people know I'm gay. I just never made an official declaration," he said. "I never felt I had to wear a billboard on my forehead. But I'm gay. Get over it. I love it. It's a great life." Claiming it was completely impromptu, Ferlo says he has no reason to deny it, and is very open about his life.

Having many gay friends, I am very excited and happy for them that politicians are slowly bringing LGBTQ rights to the forefront. Everyone deserves equal happiness and basic human rights. This speech given by Ferlo is another great stepping stone toward obtaining complete openness and helping eradicate homophobia in America, and eventually the world.

Not even a month later, thirteen more juveniles escaped from the same Woodland Hills Developmental Center. That averages out to 1.5 escapes per day. The institution claims to be rapidly upgrading and enhancing security. Due to an old court ruling in Tennessee, youths are not allowed to be locked up in their rooms. This has been the source of the many escapes and behavioral issues the institution has had to deal with over the past decades.

If I lived in Tennessee, I would be more than nervous regarding the often escapes of juvenile felons who are kept at the Woodland Hills Developmental Center for crimes such as assault, robbery, theft, and runaway. The ancient ruling regarding keeping "student's" doors unlocked needs to be revisited as soon as possible in an effort to limit the frequent escapes and rebellions. The purpose of places such as Woodland Hills is to keep both the public and criminals safe from each other. If a place like that can not fulfill its duties, then regulations need to be revisited.
