Ebola in Dallas- Iris Hughey p.5

Recently, a man that arrived in Dallas, Texas from Liberia has been confirmed to have Ebola. This is the first case of Ebola to ever be diagnosed in the United States. The man, whom authorites declined to name or say if he is American, is currently under "strict isolation" at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. In the past years Ebola has killed up to 90% of those infected, but the death rate in the current outbreak is closer to 60% due to early treatment. Although Ebola is highly contagious and deadly, it can only be spread though contact with bodily fluids. Dallas County Health and Human Services Director Zachary Thompson assures North Texans that it is "not a situation where you go to the grocery store and you get infected with the virus."

I think it is very terrifying that Ebola is in the United States at all, let alone, Dallas. But, I do believe that it will be contained and eliminated in the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. It is highly unlikely that it could have spread to others (due to the only way it can be spread) and don't think it will go any further than this unnamed man.

  1. Wow, that's so scary for it to be in Dallas. Especially after we've heard about the outbreak in Africa and all of the death its brought.

  2. What is Ebola? That sounds bizarre though... I actually know a nurse who works at that hospital.

  3. This is so scary for it to be so close to where I live. It's really scary because of the number of people who have died from this disease.

  5. While shocking, you can only hope that the disease can be contained with the technology and medical personnel we have here. We're at an advantage as opposed to the thousands of people who died in Africa.

  6. Hopefully any outbreak can be contained or prevented before it even begins. This could turn into a bad situation if not properly handled.

  7. See I've been feeling sick and as soon as I hear about this I'm all like,
"Mom, take me to the hospital. Take me now."
This is going to have everyone in Dallas so paranoid.

  8. How is this situation not handled in a more professional way? The man showed symptoms nearly a week ago and attended an IC unit, did the doctors there not recognize any symptoms related to the disease? This man has been roaming the streets of Dallas with one of the most fatal diseases in the world and we are just now figuring it out. This could go very very bad.

  9. It is said to be okay in the US because we have the money for treatment. Hopefully no one else in the US gets it though! -Jessica Sheinfeld

  10. I think that the doctors will contain it, although new developments with the charging and prosecution of this man are starting to concern the public.
