Superhero Mom! Jazmin Garcia (2nd Period)

A 24 year old California mom made the ultimate sacrifice for her newborn daughter when she refused treatment for her bone cancer. Doctors told her to begin chemotherapy immediately while pregnant, but that would mean her baby wouldn't make it. Ashley Bridges was only 10 weeks pregnant when she found out about her diagnosis. She felt that she shouldn't kill a healthy baby just because she's sick. At 8 months, doctors told Bridges that the cancer will spread if she delays the treatment any longer and that her sickness was terminal, so she had to deliver Paisley immediately so she could start her treatment. She was still given a year to live regardless of her countless treatments. She feels like she's tried so hard to keep Paisley safe and do the minimum to keep her healthy only to find out that she's not going to see her grow up. Bridges also has a 6 year old who told her "if you pass away, I want to come with you." Friends and family have been helping Bridges take care of Paisley during the day and her fiancé, who is in the military, takes the night shift. Bridges believes that she's not supposed to be here (on Earth) and that her baby is.

My thoughts while reading this was just so upsetting. It's hard to believe that a baby is going to lose a mom so soon. But what she did has to be the most unbelievable thing I've ever read about. The best thing a mom can give is love and she surely delivered. She seemed like such a good mom seeing that her little boy wanted to come with her when she does pass away. It's going to be hard for baby Paisley, but hopefully she'll learn to be as strong as her mother.

  1. This must be terrifying for the mother. But I truly do commend her for her determination to give her baby a chance at living even if it means death for herself. -Jessica Sheinfeld

  2. This is a very sad story, but very wonderful at the same time. I feel like she made the right choice, letting her almost child live. She's sacrificing so much.
