Why Lucille Ball Was More Revolutionary Than You Think - Hailey Summers - 6th Period

Since 1951, Lucille Ball has captured America' s attention with whit and groundbreaking comedy, but few know just how groundbreaking she really was. Many are already aware that Lucille Ball paved the way for women in television, but, in fact, she revolutionized American entertainment. She was not only one of the first leading female comedic roles in the ever popular "I Love Lucy," but she also co-owned the production company, Desilu, with her husband Desi Arnez. She later went on to buy out the company after her divorcing Arnez, becoming the first woman head of a major production company. Lucille Ball has left her mark in this medium with her great contributions and breakthroughs.

This was a phenomenal show breaking the gender stereotypes of the 50's. During this time, women were known as a house wife and a baby maker, and even though she did play somewhat this kind of stereotype, behind the scenes it was a much different story. The war was over and women were now accustomed to "men's work" such as factory jobs and textile production. This meant more and more women were leaving their homes and getting their own "9 to 5." Lucille Ball was a perfect example of the revolution of women prospering in a "man's world."
