The 23-year-old with 24 kids: Genocide orphans form their own families by Joi Ware

Summary: At the University of Rwanda College of Education in Kigali exams start in a week. Jean Claude Nkusi gathers with his 24 children at the back of a building telling them to study hard because it could determine their future. Nkusi, only 23, is not related to any of these young kids except the fact they share the commonality of genocide, they're all survivors. Association for Student Genocide Survivors was originally created by 12 University of Rwanda and has been growing since. They create families based on the college they attend and then elect a mother or father to represent them, from their they create a community to support each other financially and emotionally.

Analysis: This sis amazing, as humans we need this, we need support. We crave the sense of community to lift us up and help us out. These kids have been through so much, they have either witnessed the violence or have been raped and victimized themselves. Almost more than half of these children lost one or both parents to AIDS through rape as a tool of war. They need these families to get back the way they used to be, without the reminder they might not survive in the world.

  2. It's heartwarming to hear how the University is putting together these families after such tragic events have happened to its members. I hope this program continues on for a long time.
