Madilyn Weems - Coffee Saves Lives

These past few weeks have been very difficult not just for me but for many others, and so when I sat down to have to find a current event and I write about it I thought of all the horrible politics, and racism, and much more that I would see. So instead I decided to find good, pure news, that no one can spin into darkness.
Recently at the University of Toronto students are turning a valuable resource for refugees overseas, by using coffee ground leftovers and creating Moto. Women and Children in refugee camps reportedly 90% of their cooking using firewood, therefore late at night they would have to leave camp in search of firewood. This can take hours and it leaves these children and women in more danger to be out late at night and faraway from the camps. The Canadian engineering students are hoping to eliminate that risk by with the creation of Moto: a fake flammable log made of sugar, coffee grounds, and paraffin wax that can burn for up to 90 minutes. The current team continues to reach out to big corporations to help in this such as Starbucks and Second Cup. This relates to after World War II, when starved children lived in Berlin and were in search for food. A Unites States Pilot after a brief encounter with several German children living in war-torn Berlin, began to drop candy and gum into the city, bringing the children not only a little joy, but a great deal of hope. He was known to the children as “Uncle Wiggly Wings,” because he’d signal their treats by wiggling the wings of his plane when he flew over with supplies. Food’s resources can help those in need in so many ways, and it’s even better when coffee is involved.

  2. This is nifty as heck. Coffee is amazing. Thanks for spreading the good vibes (I tried to post something positive but ended up writing a blog entry about how we might all die at any moment, so I suppose it didn't quite work out as intended).
