Layla Maynard: I Am There Minutes Late and Going to Cry

Summary: A new bill being discussed in Georgia is causing outrage in the LGBT+ community. The bill, House Bill 757, combines the Pastor Protection Act and the First Amendment Defense Act. Basically, the bill allows religious leaders refusal to perform same sex marriages and tax funded groups to deny certain services to anyone in the LGBT+ community.  Greg Kirk, the bill's Senate sponsor, attempted to do away with the thought that this law seems very discriminatory by claiming it's "about equal protection."

Analysis: The fact that essentially the entire state of Georgia is supporting this homophobic and incredibly discriminatory law is astounding to me. This is often a big problem we run into with modern day religion; beliefs and ideas of one group of followers or religion always greatly affects the lives of others. It doesn't seem fair that the state of Georgia is sacrificing the rights of gays and lesbians in order to "protect" their religious leaders.

  1. I completely agree, this is astounding. It is so different from what we see in our everyday lives, being a student at Booker T. It makes us appreciate the people we are around everyday.
