Claudia Anthony "Why Sandy Hook parents are suing a gunmaker"

On December 14, 2012, both Jackie Barden and David Wheeler lost a child during the Sandy Hook shooting. These two want to try their best to make sure no other families have to go through what they did that day. The weapon that was used at the shooting was an automatic that was originally commissioned for the U.S. military. Barden and Wheeler are involved in a lawsuit, and they are hoping for the accountability of the gunmaker Remington. The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which was created in 2005, protects gunmakers from any lawsuits related to injuries caused by their weapons. An exception to this law is called "negligent entrustment," such as giving a weapon to an obviously intoxicated person. The attorney for the case says that Remington's sale of this gun falls under that category, because the gun is typically used by the military, who train to use it and know how serious of a weapon it is. Families believe that the company needs to have consequences for these actions.

I think that this case would be an exception to the law, because of how dangerous of a weapon it is, and because the company knew that the gun was specially designed for the military. These families have been through so much, and although the gunmaker was not fully responsible for the shooting, the company made such an intense weapon accessible to the public. Since the Columbine shooting in 1999, little has been done to improve gun laws, and deadlier weapons have been invented.

  1. (Angelique Flores 9th) I have to disagree only because "Guns don't kill people. People Kill People" and a lot has been done to improve gun laws. They now have a law that states if you do not have a licence to carry a gun, that you can't carry one at all. Also in order to get the Gun carrying licence you have to go through a series of not just physical but MENTAL tests to see if you are legally able to carry a gun.

  2. I agree with Angelique, the gunmakers aren't the ones shooting them, all they do is sell them. It's up to the people who buy the guns what they do with them. -Mattie Whisler 9th period Flex

  3. I also agree. The people that sell guns have no idea what people will do with those guns, they are just trying to make money. Also, gun control is a huge issue in the world that has been heavily debated, and I honestly think the debate is far from over.
