Kansas Police Chief Praised For Heroic Act // Olivia Gillis P3

When a Kansas man went on a shooting rampage on Thursday, most people ran in the opposite direction. However, not law enforcement officers like Doug Schroeder. When Schroeder saw the gunman storm into the equipment factory, he immediately followed. The 2 men exchanged gunfire and Schroeder shot and killed Ford who was armed with an AK-47 style assault rifle. Three people were killed and fourteen were wounded, however authorities believe it could've been much worse if Schroeder hadn't killed Ford when he did. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear but, officials believe he could've been possibly upset after his ex-girlfriend who had took out a protective order against him. Regardless, it was a very heroic move of Schroeder to risk his own life in order to protect others and he is being rewarded and recognized accordingly.
Although this story overall is very sad, it's also very refreshing to see a positive outcome in the midst of so many negative ones. It's very unfortunate that any innocent people were wounded or killed due to Ford's actions, however it could've gotten much worse if Schroeder hadn't stepped in when he did. In the words of Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton,  "Even though he took fire, he went inside of that place and saved multiple lives. He's a hero as far as I'm concerned."

  1. With police receiving a bad reputation lately it's great to hear about one actually handling a real threat properly.
