Best Black History Month Ever? // Tymie Jadagu // 6th P

Summary: This month began with an African American woman, Stacey dash, suggesting we get rid of this month. However, this month proved to be one for the history books. After a second year of only white nominations for the oscars, the #oscarssowhite hashtag came back for round two, Beyoncé had all of America in formation, with her video including The topics of police brutality, hurricane Katrina, and economics. Beyoncé took to the field with an outfit that was an obvious nod to the political group, the black panthers. Kendrick Lamar Also had a politically charged performance at the Grammys and the lead singer of the alternative rock band Alabama shakes, a black woman accepted a Grammy. There was a new American doll released, and an actor who refuses to act in her state until the confederate flag is taken down. Although some say pop culture events don't have any relevance, it's safe to say that some moments that took place this month have the power to inspire generations forever.
Analysis: All the performances and awards and recognition/ or lack thereof black talent and arts in the industry reminds me of the Harlem Renaissance. This was a time when black art became nationally recognized as American Art and for a second, racial relations seemed to be on the right path in the midst of many injustices. It also reminds of the civil rights movement, because while we have come a long way, we still have a ways to go. We are still protesting, and now we are doing it through art, and to larger audiences than we ever could have imagined.

  1. It has been an amazing black history month, and I hope each year will get better as people continue to speak out about social injustices. -Claudia Anthony
