Manon McCollum Post-quake tsunami alerts lifted for Alaska, British Columbia, U.S. West Coast

Early this morning, a 7.9 earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska, inciting tsunami sirens for much of Alaska and Canada's west coast. The cities most likely to be hit (and hit hard) are Anchorage, Juno, and Vancouver. It will be interesting to see how America and Canada handle this natural disaster.

In recent years, from Katrina to Maria, the US government has done a very poor job in helping its citizens in the wake of disasters. Further lack of compassion can be seen in handling disaster-struck Haitian refugees, when President Trump referred to Haiti as a "shithole country", and said he didn't want any immigrants from there. Maybe when the affected communities are white, the government will care a little more.

In the past, natural disasters like droughts and dust bowls tanked the American economy, and ruined the lives of countless Americans.

  1. It's interesting seeing such failure in the event of real emergencies and yet someone managed to send out a false alarm warning of impending missile strikes on Hawaii; seems pretty silly to me

  2. I feel bad for all of those living in the affected areas. Hopefully the government will do a better job of helping those communities that what it has done in the past. And maybe if they do, people will notice the hypocrisy that is taking place.

  3. I hope everyone who may be affected will come out okay. I also hope that the government is able to provide help to these communities.
