Cleveland Indians discontinue "Chief Wahoo"

The Cleveland Indians (MLB) will change the team logo next year after receiving pressure over their image, "Chief Wahoo." Wahoo is a cartoonish image of a Native American, whom they've carried since 1948, but in 2019 the logo will no longer be used. The team has been edging away from the logo in recent years but will completely abandon the image at the beginning of 2019. Rob Manfred, the MLB commissioner, said that the Indians' management "ultimately agreed with my position that the logo is no longer appropriate for on-field use in Major League Baseball." Paul Dolan, Cleveland's chairman and chief executive, has said "We have consistently maintained that we are cognizant and sensitive to both sides of the discussion. While we recognize many of our fans have a longstanding attachment to Chief Wahoo, I'm ultimately in agreement with Commissioner Manfred's desire to remove the logo from our uniforms in 2019." Merch and items featuring the logo of Chief Wahoo will still be available at the team's store for retaining the trademark, but the logo will not appear on MLB website items.

  1. I'm in full agreeance with this decision! respecting native americans and their culture, especially after all the terrible thing that have happened to them, is much more important than holding on to a symbol that fans are attached to. Chief wahoo and other uses of native americans as symbols and logos are and always have been politically incorrect and it's high time people start recognizing that
