Kentucky School Shooting - Lauren Rothert

On Tuesday, a 15-year-old student at Marshall County High School in Benton, Kentucky went on a shooting rampage and injured around 16 students. Of the two casualties, one of them was Bailey Holt, a 15-year-old girl who died at the scene. As her last act during her lifetime she called her mom, but was unable to speak, her mother only heard the panicked screams in the background of the call. Bailey was described as a perfect daughter who knew what she wanted to do with her career and life ahead of her. The second casualty was Preston Cope, a 15-year-old male. His parents arrived at the scene just in time to see their son being loaded into an ambulance; they were able to say their goodbyes and I love you's. Cope died en route to the hospital due to a head wound. The suspect, who has not yet been released because he is a juvenile, is being charged with murder and 12 counts of first-degree assault. A grand jury is scheduled to meet on February 13 to discuss the charges.

This is so scary. I wonder what prompted this high school student to bring a gun to school and shoot his peers. I believe that the suspect should be charged as an adult, his actions were not those of a juvenile. I hope the citizens of Kentucky are able to overcome this tragedy, and I hope the students of Marshall County High School are able to return to school without fear and honor their late classmates.

  1. To be quite honest, the repetition of school shootings and shootings in general has apparently not made a big enough impact to worry our government and congress. No matter what you believe, guns are used to kill people, the argument “people kill people not guns” is just as adequate as saying “people kill people not drunk driving” and yet we have laws for that issue. This debate won’t cease along with this issue, as history has made that quite clear since the last shooting was in October.

  2. Apparently school shootings have been abundant this year and it’s sad that they haven’t been talked about enough. I pray that the families and friends affected can overcome this hard time in unison. I also hope that the school will take the necessary precautions to help their students heal and prevent further harm.

  3. It's crazy to think that most of the shootings happen from/ people our age. There are so many other things to do in life, and people ruin it so early on.

  4. This is a truly saddening event, in which I hope that the students and families will recover from. I hope that schools learn to take precautions, and I am sorry for all of the lives lost within shootings, like this.

  5. This is very terrible and I cant believe those families are having to go through this right now. I cant believe those parents said I love you to their son for the last time on an ambulance
