Claire Zimmerman: Tilt-a-Whirl Goes Tilt-a-Wrong

On Thursday at the North Carolina State Fair, a ride, called "The Vortex" had a mishap, and started going as people were trying to exit the ride. Five people were injured during this incident, but luckily none were killed or fatally wounded. The machine operator has been arrested for supposedly messing with the machine equipment, causing this to happen, either purposefully or not.

I don't think that this man did this on purpose. After the incident happened, the man fell on his knees and burst in to tears! That's not the usual sign of a cold-hearted killer. I think that maybe he accidentally did something to the machinery that he thought wouldn't have such a harmful effect. Although it was smart of the police to at least check him out, because he has been arrested three times for assault with a deadly weapon. So it's very possible that he did do this on purpose, but I don't find it to be too likely.

  1. This is so scary and its also the reason that I never ride any rides at the fair or six flags. Anything can happen on even the safest of rides. -Nia Edwards 4th period

  2. This is why I hate roller coasters. Because this guy has a record I am happy that the government is checking him out. This is sketchy and just awful.

  3. Well, this wasn't exactly the safest ride. State Fair rides are so much scarier than rides at places like Six Flags, because they're temporary and can be taken apart in a day. This means that they are not built as sturdily, and thus, can be tampered with easier. I hate State Fair rides, but I love rides that are safe and secure and aren't temporary.

  6. While it is natural for one to be more suspicious of someone who has been arrested for assault three times prior to the incident, all crimes that one has committed in the past cannot be taken into account and used against that person, when determining their guilt in court. It would be unfair and a disadvantage for this man to receive extra suspicion and scrutiny because of his past crimes when determining whether he is guilty of harming these people.

  7. That's a really good point, Griffin. They can't accuse a man of a crime simply because he's committed other crimes before. Now, they can watch him closely, and investigate because he is the prime suspect, but it would be unjust and unlawful for them to convict him simply because of his past.
