"Jerky treats leave nearly 600 dogs dead in 'mysterious outbreak', FDA says" By: McKay Fugate

Federal health officials are warning pet owners to be cautious about feeding their dogs jerky treats as they continue to investigate a treat-related illness that has left nearly 600 dogs dead and sickened more than 3,000 others. The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday issued an alert to all consumers about the illnesses and deaths tied to jerky treats from China. The exact cause of these illness remains unknown. However, officials say that if your pet begins to exhibit symptoms including decreased appetite, vomiting, or decreased activity, consult a veterinarian and save any remaining treats and treat packaging for possible testing.

This article kind of scared me, because I wouldn't be able to tell you anything that's in my dog's treats. This article is definitely aimed at dog owners. It is a warning to them to be careful as to what they are giving their dogs, but also a bit more than that. It mentions that these treats come from China, and I believe this is a slight jab at foreign made products. America's dependency on imported goods has greatly increased in recent years, and I believe this article makes a small political statement as to what they do to us.

  1. I agree with you pointing out that America has become to dependent on other countries for goods. Maybe it would be a good idea to become more self sufficient. That way it could be easier to determine what exactly is in the goods that Americans are buying.

  3. That's so scary and yeah I totally agree. Products from around the world super cool! But when we don't know what's in them it becomes a problem. There's no telling what we really come in contact with every day.

  5. Its so sad that dogs have died because Americans think that anything coming from China is good. We definitely need to know ingredients before endangering any more animals.- Nia Edwards 4th period
