McKenzie Hartmann- Abortion Law Restricted -4 th Period

This article details the recent decision by a federal judge that essentially bans sections the new abortion law in certain parts of Texas.  Particularly those sections pertaining to the distribution of necessary medication and the restrictions placed on physicians.  The lawsuit, filed by planned parenthood on behalf of women, claiming that their constitutional rights have been violated.  The judge decidedly agreed saying all the requirements place lofty, unreasonable obstacles in the way of women seeking abortions.  However, certain aspects of the law, such as follow up visits, will be kept.  Proponents of abortion feel the judge didn't push the boundaries of the law far enough, but none the less see the situation as win.  One source said that today marked a victory for the women of Texas.  Though it is important to remember this only effects certain areas of the state, meaning not all Texas women will receive the benefits of the ruling.  Meanwhile, conservative parties view the outcome as a disappointment.  Governor Rick Perry claims they will continue to fight against the evils of abortion, saying, "Today's decision will not stop our ongoing efforts to protect life and ensure the women of our state aren't exposed to any more of the abortion-mill horror stories that have made headlines recently."

While I understand both sides of this argument and see validity, I can't understand how we can still live in a society where women are treated like second class citizens.  Perry directly proves this, by trying to protect women from 'exposure.'  What are we?  Children?  Vulnerable and dependent who must rely on others for protection from 'exposure' to the evils of the world?  The fact of the matter remains abortions are going to happen and they should be a woman's choice.  Politicians can't make it impossible for women to seek an abortion, it's unconstitutional.  While I agree there should be some restrictions that hinder the careless destruction of life, the restrictions can't hinder a woman's ability completely.  If the situation demands an abortion for the health of the mother, that's when women really need this so called protection.  When men are forced to be fathers abortion can be outlawed, but until that day comes there should be equality in the right not to be a parent.  I'm not saying abortion is good, I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying it should be the mother's choice.

  1. McKenzie, you are absolutely correct. This is a choice that only the woman has the experience and perspective to make. Any imposition regarding this issue, other than that which is only sensible, an an affront to women's freedoms and liberties, and is made under the horribly misguided belief that rich, older politicians know what's best for a woman's life and body.
