Missing Student Signs Removed- Alexa Almaguer 4th Period

Summary:
In June of 2011, Lauren Spierer went missing after a night out with friends. Lauren was a sophomore at Indiana University in Bloomington. This past spring, Bloomington firefighters put up 20 billboard style signs throughout the city in an effort to move forward with the case. This past month the city had all of the signs removed in order to, "balance community interests." Charlene Spierer was never notified of her daughter's signs' removal, and says she was saddened by this sudden movement. Charlene says that she had hoped somebody would see the missing sign and call the police with a piece of evidence that could help close the case.

Analysis:
Written by Shawn Cohen, this article discusses the recent removal of signs in Bloomington, Indiana that informed citizens of a missing 20 year old known as Lauren Spierer. Lauren went missing two years ago and police still have no leads to where the sophomore at Indiana University could be. The town wanted to move forward with community interests and advertise more recent events on billboards throughout the city. Despite Lauren's signs' being taken down, the police are still searching for her and the city still supports Spierer's family during this time.

  1. I feel that the sign was put up for a specific cause- to create more awareness of an unresolved case. It seems wrong to take down signs raising awareness for a missing person.

  2. While its wrong to have taken off all the signs I can see some justification to it, but I believe that the city should have left at least some up for people to still have a means of keeping up with contact information and having it fresh in their minds.

  3. i feel like your analysis is just a summarization of the actual summary of the article. what are your opinions are the sign removal? honestly i think its ghastly that the community would take them down to balance "interests". so would they rather take the sign down and not look for a friend or family member in the community!? Help find this poor girl, there;s always hope

  4. I'm not sure what "interests" would involve having those signs taken down.... It sounds a bit suspicious to me. The polite thing to do would have been to at least notify her mother that the signs were being taken down. I hope that this girl will be found and reunited with her family.
