"Ride operator arrested after 5 hurt at North Carolina state fair" By: McKay Fugate

Authorities say that the operator of a ride that injured five people at the North Carolina State Fair has been charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Wake Country Sheriff Donnie Harrison said that investigators believe that the "Vortex" ride was tampered with and critical safety devices were compromised. The accident occurred shortly after 9 p.m. on Thursday, when witnesses said the ride-- known for its twirls and flips-- suddenly started up after if had stopped and while people were exiting. Three people are still in the hospital and in stable condition. The ride is closed for the duration of the fair.
This article really reassured my fear of heights and rides at the fair. Thankfully, the fair is closed, but I think there needs to be greater security and a more thorough safety inspection for the contract rides that come to the fair. While this event is a tragedy, I do think its a good wake up call for fair officials to put greater safety measures in place.
