New Virus Takes Kansas by Storm- Rachel Devine (6th)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that they have discovered a new virus that is caused by tick and other insect bites. When a 50 year old man came in to a Kansas hospital with a fever, fatigue, nausea, and headaches, doctors were stumped when he tested negative for many tests. He died 11 days later, and soon the doctors came to the realizaton that he had the Bourben virus (named after the county where the man lived.) The CDC is advising people to use insect repellent and wear appropriate clothing that covers most of one's body when, for example, working or camping outside.

Hopefully this new Bourbon virus will stay under control and people won't freak out about it like they did with Ebola. While these are serious and precautions should be taken, we also have to keep in mind that it's not the end of the world. In regards to APUSH, this article relates to the 1952 nationwide outbreak of polio in the United States.

  1. I bet the reaction up north is the same as when Ebola struck the south. How they are handling the situation there may be unknown to us here because it is not as much as a threat to us until it moves our way. I hope they get things settled and under control!

  2. Though this is horrible, at least the United States has had a great amount of experience in the past and are well equipped to handle such outbreaks.
