Gay Marriage in Alabama by Lydia Petree, 4th Period

A federal judge has instructed a judge in Mobile County to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples, hinting to others in Alabama to do the same. Although the ban had already been struck down, some probate judges had been refusing to allow the marriages. This instruction is a response to the failure to act. However, several Alabama citizens groups are protesting and filing lawsuits against the Alabama judge to keep him from issuing the licences.

This ruling is similar to the landmark cases of Phillips versus Marietta Corp. in 1971 and of Roe vs Wade in 1973. The first case, Marietta Corp., provided more of a standing for women in preventing discrimination in the workplace. Women were protected by law, but it was not enforced, that they should be able to get the same job as a man. Roe vs Wade allowed women in Texas to legally pursue an abortion. This ruling on same sex marriage is similar to these because it deals with the advancement of human rights.

  1. No matter what a person believes, one should not refuse the law. If there is a problem, then there must be a viable solution. To flat out refuse to give the licenses out is not right.
