Run Away from the Gunman? by Madeine Ibarra Period 2

Today at LAX international airport, a misinformed announcement over PA systems had passengers in a frenzy about a mysterious gunman. This information was relayed too quickly to be interpenetrated properly. The actual situation was one that was taking place outside of the air port and did not endanger those inside. Airport police responded as if it were a real emergency. In actuality, there was a suspect who was thought to have a gun making suicide threats on airport property. As this all happened, many passengers escaped the building through emergency exits without knowing any detail at all.

Since the terrorist scare in airports, security has stepped up ten fold. This also means that security officials are more prone to respond to any sort of suspicious behavior. Sometimes, mistakes happen and people are scrambled in response to false information. This is a case where the announcement should not have been made to the general public, but to other officers to handle the situation before hand. Then again, this shows how ready our officers are and how well people can evacuate in a serious situation such as this one might have been. We were not told what happened to the man outside of the airport that the police went after but they were able to handle it in a way that did not harm the mass of the public.

  2. This seemed to have been an extremely chaotic situation, and when everyone is frenetic, people start to relay false information. This only worsens the situation. It is good that no one on the inside of the airport was harmed; however, we must learn to handle dangerous situations like these very carefully to ensure everyone's safety.
