Chapel Hill Shooting Update by Lydia Petree, 4th Period

After the shooting of three Muslim students in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, a grand jury has indicted the man accused. The man is Craig Hicks. He is forty six years old. He is accused of four counts of first degree murder. An ongoing neighbor dispute over parking may have been a factor in the shooting, but it is not quite clear yet what the motive was. The FBI is looking into whether it can be classified as a hate crime.

This is similar to the question of whether or not the murder of the gay teen in Laramie was a hate crime or not. Evidence is appearing now that suggests there were other factors involved. This may be the case with the Chapel Hill shooting, but for now, we will not know for sure. Other hate crimes occurring in the US are lynchings associated with the KKK. The KKK is still an organization that exists today. Discrimination is alive and well in the US.

  1. To be honest, this doesn't surprise me that a white middle-aged or older man would do this. I think this is a hate crime.

  2. It is definitely a hate crime but the fact that you are stereotyping a group is exactly why these kinds of things happen, I know you did not intend for that but just keep in mind what you say
