Late Friday night, New York City's longest homicide-free streak that's been recorded ended. A 28-year-old man was shot multiple times just before midnight, ending the streak. That man was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition and passed away later that night. The last homicide recorded before that was on February 1st. Arrests were not made and both cases are still ongoing. This streak is the longest homicide-free steak since 1994 when the New York Police Department started to record statistics. NYC's last record for a homicide-free streak was 10 days in 2014.
Laura Ly wrote this article for CNN on February 16th. Before reading this article, I was aware of New York City's high crime rate. I'm glad this record was set, it's an astounding record for NYC; however, it does make you think about just how many homicides do occur in NYC. It's rather sad that 12 days is the record, but I suppose it's monumental for a city with such a high crime rate.

NYC is a pretty decent sized state, but seeing how it's a pretty well known city, I'm not surprised of their crime rate. Hopefully one day they beat their recent record.
ReplyDeleteI also wrote on this and while it is positive that NYC was murder-free for almost two weeks, it should still be shocking that it the record is so minuscule.

I'm glad that crime is leveling out in New York, though it would be interesting to find out why. It could be replicated to produce similar results again.
