Today's Progressivism - Rachel Webb 3rd

America's progressive goals may have changed from the times of Woodrow Wilson to now, but the progressive American is still around today. A progressive is someone who seeks social reform in the light of equality and liberty. Some may call them "Liberals". In the late 1800s and early 1900s, people wanted not only to have a say in politics but to have their voices heard. This, sadly, was not the case in Capitalist America where the government paid more attention to those who were making America look good. Lower-class citizens such as farmers and industrial workers were the main contributors to the progressive movements, along with women who demanded voting rights. These people had high hopes for reforms in areas like government spending and labor hours. At this time when women and even children were working in dangerous factories for long periods of time, big business owners were monopolizing from their luxurious homes. Something needed to change, and progressives made it happen. The same thing is happening now. Progressive president, Barack Obama, is making changes of his own throughout his presidency. This stands to show that the need for change and reform is always pressing in America. We need to make sure America stays free.
