Trevor Turnbow- Obama's Farewell Letter

When Obama left office in January, in wake of the craziness of the 2016 election, he left a letter for President Trump as he began his journey in the White House. While it is a long standing tradition for Presidents to leave notes for their successors it is a surprise that this letter was released to the public so soon. In the letter Obama congratulates Trump on his win, and gives some advice as he starts to navigate this job. He tells Trump to "build more ladders of success for every child and family," and to "sustain the national order" and "protect democratic institutions and traditions." Trump commented saying that it was a beautiful letter. Different political figures have made statements about the letter some saying it's too politically correct, and others saying it was an eloquently written letter that Trump has yet to follow the advice from.
I think the article itself is written in a pretty neutral objective voice, there isn't really a sway to either side. It talks about the criticism & positive reactions to the letter and President Trump. I think this is another classic example of Trump saying one thing, then doing another. I think with the pending removal of  DACA there is little attention on "building more ladders of success for EVERY child" and more attention on peoples idea that only the opinions of the privileged should be carried out in our government. I think his unwillingness to open his mind and to be a reasonable human being has definitely affected our "national order" and we have stripped people of their natural rights thus destroying our democratic institutions we've fought to protect. His statement on how it was a beautiful letter, in contrast with his actions that don't go along with what was stated really show how hypocritical he can be.
I think this can be connected to Washington's farewell address and how his warning and advice tended to get left behind. His warning on Political Parties and partisan fighting definitely went over the governments heads considering the huge divide the Political Parties have created in our country today. Obama's letter is just another example of people not listening to solid sound advice, at the countries expense.

  1. I hope president Trump can take notes from Obama's letter instead of slowing things down. Perhaps they realeased the letter so soon because they felt it was important at a time like this.

  2. Obama is once again a national example for spreading positivity. It's more than likely that Trump's comment about the letter being beautiful was to create a positive image of himself in the press. Unfortunately, I doubt he has any intention to follow Obama's advice. I'd like to be optimistic about the situation, but Trump has thus far showed the country he's incapable of doing anything but perpetuate his biases.

  3. I wish Trump would listen. There are so many concerns that have been spreading while he has been in office, as he exudes arrogance. In my opinion, a president should spread hope and positivity to all, while maintaining freedom of speech for the people. Obama's letter should be heeded by Trump.
