Social media and cellphones have been acting as lifelines for those suffering from recent natural disasters. People are depending on the messaging apps: WhatsApp and Zello to communicate with those who live in Puerto Rico where the power has gone out. Zello, which lets people communicate in low-bandwidth environments has become increasingly popular, with over a million new registrations everyday. In the Caribbean Texas, Florida, and Mexico sometimes the phone lines don't work, so people have been turning to social media to seek emergency medical help. They will post a picture and their address so rescuers know where to go. 911 is still the recommended way to get help, but a problem with it is that only a few 911 centers accept text messages. Social media is more easily used by younger generations in our current natural disasters.
This article is an example of how technology can be used as a benefit to our society. Technology makes things quick and efficient. If people didn't have cell phones, then they wouldn't be able to receive help near as fast. It is also helpful that there are also many different forms of communicating including 911, messaging apps, and social media. It's good that people have all these resources to depend on. The opposite occurred in our history. In the past when there were many wars and people were suffering, it was hard for them to get help. It took a very long time to notify people far away of what was going on. Technology would have aided in their struggles.

  1. I'm glad that technology is getting more credit, especially when it helps people in dire events such as this and that it ends up saving lives.

  6. I'm so glad that the people could find help by using their phones! Even though they're mostly used for entertainment, it's so important to remember that phones can even save lives.
