Soleil Singh-Hurricane Maria Aftermath
As another disaster strikes again, the small US territory of Puerto Rico, seems to be the most affected.
Some are saying they felt the U.S. territory was being forgotten and Puerto Ricans described desperate conditions on the damaged island and pleaded for more help from federal agencies on Monday. "I've seen very little to no police presence, I've seen zero military presence. Nights are excruciating, there's screaming, there's gunshots. It’s hot, so it’s hard to sleep right now I haven’t slept in 48 hours," said Casablanca, a rental property manager. Federal agencies rescuing people and providing aid to Puerto Rico in Hurricane Maria are facing an island that is without power, running water, fuel and access to cell service on Monday, five days after the storm first made landfall. FEMA Administers and relief crews continued to work to provide much needed supplies to the island. More than 10,000 federal staff, including 700 FEMA personnel, were in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, helping with the massive rescue efforts, and they are in need of dire supplies. Maria was the third major storm to hit U.S. shores in just a month, after Hurricanes Irma and Harvey is overcoming havoc across the Caribbean and southeastern U.S. “We still have townships not reached. The government had a diesel ship parked in the bay and the government and National Guard is so maxed out they couldn’t ensure security so the fuel could reach its destination,” said Colón, who lives in Miami and worked 12 years for the State Department as a science and technology adviser, saying that they need help. “We need boots on the ground from the federal government. We need FEMA, National Guard, a federal response at [Hurricane] Katrina scale.” I believe this hurricane has left major damage, and this storm will have long lasting negative affects. Hurricane Maria is not only a deadly storm, but a chaotic mess has been left on this island. This massive mess only proves that the Americas need to bind together and support each other, so we can help Puerto Rico overcome this deadly aftermath.
this is just perfect evidence to global warming. our government needs to recognize science and stop being so ignorant.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Our country is going to perish if we don't do something to stop it. The government needs to help stop this
ReplyDeleteThe destruction Maria brought will be felt for a long time in Puerto Rico, but I am hopeful that the people of Puerto Rico will get the supplies they need quickly.

Hopefully, supplies and help is received by the victims in short time - both physical and emotional help, for their necessities and loss.
ReplyDeleteNot until Puerto Rico is stripped of these neocolonial policies that they will be able to fully recover. It is ridiculous how America is supposed to be a welcoming and free country when we can't provide for our own "territory."
ReplyDeleteI agree as well, Maria brought so much destruction and devastation and we as nation need to send our hopes and prayers to this families who are heading back home to a home that might not be their anymore.

It's probably going to be like Katrina all over again. There are some parts of Louisiana still recovering from the hurricane, and that was a state, not a territory, which we have proven, time from time, that we do not care about its well being as much as we should.
ReplyDeleteI agree. The climate's destruction of our world is very terrifying.
