What do you know about Rikers Island? Nothing, maybe. Or maybe you know that this island is the last place you would like to be. Rikers Island is a jail in New York that is known for abuse, rape, inedible food, gangs and death. This jail has been around for 85 years causing men( especially black men) to be broken down to a point of no return. Fortunately, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has taken up the process to finally shut down Rikers Island.

ReplyDeleteWow this is huge news. I've heard about Rikers from shows like Law and Order and the news. I have just see a glimpse of its horror. Shutting down an entire prison is a big venture, especially such a large one. How do they know the new jail won't just turn out the same?
Ive never heard of Riker before but now that I have it scares me a lot. All we have the power to do is pray for those effected by Rikers Island. How long do you think it'll take before Riker is taken down? What measures do you think will have to be taken?
ReplyDeleteI know it is going to take about 10 years because there are so many men stuck in there for things they didn't even do or because they couldn't pay their bail.
