This past Sunday, a masked gunman opened fire on a church in Antioch Tennessee killing one person and injuring six others. The police still have not determined a motive, however, they now know the attacker had actually attended the church in the past two years, and some church members knew him. The shooting was stopped by a 22 year old church usher, Robert Caleb Engle, who was also seriously injured in the scuffle. "He's the hero. He's the person who stopped this madness, and so were very, very grateful to him."said the Nashville police chief. One of the worst parts about this tragedy is the fact that most victims were senior citizens. As church members began to flee, they were left behind. The police and local citizens are still confused why the church became a target, as " Its a really good christian church, with older and younger people, of all races. Everyone seamed to get along. I don't know of any reason anyone would do that.".
This article was written to give more explication to the horrible tragedy that occurred, and more background on the location of the attack. This article has no biased opinions, but in my opinion, it further proves that limits need to be placed on who can purchase firearms. Almost anyone can buy a gun without a background check or mental health tests, and these policies need to change so less tragedies like this occur. To me, this attack is similar to the hate crimes of people of color after the September 11 attack. Even years later, the same lenient regulations exist on purchasing dangerous weapons.
