Sadie Schiermeyer- Politics in Sports

Across the country, many different social figures have been kneeling during the American anthem. For most, it is a sign of disapproval in our society without showing disrespect to our country. There are many reactions, but President Trumps is the most outspoken about the issue. Using social media, he made it clear that he finds the gesture to be a disgrace and should be forbidden. It came as a shock to him, and many others, when “America’s Team” the Cowboys knelt during the national anthem. The team clarified that they were sending a message to the President to demonstrate that they will stand together through societal issues. They still respect the flag and our country, but the team believes that they should be able to speak out on subjects without the President adding his two cents and putting their jobs on the line. However, Trump turned the tables when he took a step back and said he was actually proud of the team for standing up for the flag.

Personally, I think Donald Trump has no place to criticize the players and monopolize their jobs. The players are just exercising their rights as American citizens to make their opinions heard and stand up for a cause they believe in.  It may upset the president, but movements like these are what makes our society progress. If they are never heard, nothing will ever change. If no one was ever able to rebel or stand up for what they believe in, then we would still just be colonies belonging to Britain. As the President of the United States, Donald Trump should know that what the players are doing is neither illegal or unconstitutional- and therefore should not be affected by his opinions.

  1. Everyone needs to realize that everyone has a passion, no matter what it is, it's what they want to do. No one should ever be judged for doing what they love. People need to focus on themselves and not criticize others for doing what they want. We should all respect each others opinions and passions.

  2. I agree. Trump shouldn't have the right to put people's jobs on the line just for an action that he didn't like. And if the 1st amendment exists then why is this even an issue... their symbol of unity should not have any negative effects.
